This is a good start, but it misses the two reasons most DJs wanted flexible beatgrids: inconsistent bpms and transition tracks.
There are VERY few situations where the current implementation is useful. I can't really think of any songs where there's an instant transition from one bpm to the next, it's almost always a transition over time.
I'm grateful for this added feature, but unfortunately it doesn't address the actual needs.

Great update. But I agree with you. I play a lot of old funk/disco/80's and the beats are very unstable. As I can tell there is no "easy" way to get Traktor locked and follow the unstable beat. Or is I missing out on something @nativeinstruments

@@JohnGPedersen I'm waiting for the moment when neural networks can be used to quickly and accurately find beats in music, Traktor will arrange those beats, and the tempo will be recalculated relative to the grid thus arranged in the moment. And if you want, you can FIX that tempo by synchronizing it with the master clock. It will be perfect!

This implementation is meh, it can work when there is two different tempos etc, but it doesnt work for live drummers, so mentioning disco in text is not in place. Djay pro actually does it perfectly, AUTOMATICALLY. I really hope it is starting point and will be upgraded a lot.

  • @jakarl
    @jakarl 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

So it's tempo 'zones', it's not really what I'd call flexible grids (although Serato seems to have the same thing by the looks). Doesn't cater for a beat grid drift of older (vinyl recorded) tracks which I would hope a 'flexible' grid did, more aimed at specifically track engineerd BPM changes and having to manually set those.

I bought Pro 4 and I'm really excited about it, but unfortunately I have the feeling that the gridding has gotten worse for some of my songs...
So I have a song that starts at 115 BPM, goes up to 150 BPM in the middle and then ends at 115 BPM again.
So I have set 3 grid parts. The 150 in the middle and the 115 at the end are taken, but the 115 at the beginning is automatically turned into 115.89 again and again... No matter how I try to set the 115 at the beginning, it always jumps back to 115.89. The only thing I can do is 114.73 or 116.45. But no 115.
And so it is with some songs. The middle and the end are recognized well, but the beginning is always wrong in the decimal place.
Is there a setting for this or have I overlooked something?
    Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately, it's the same for me every time!
I have a song for which I need a second grid marker and as soon as I set the second one, the first one is no longer correct, but wrong by a few decimal places and can no longer be set correctly.
      Example:
A song that has 121 BPM throughout, but due to the buildup the drop is no longer exactly on the grid. Only one marker - 121 BPM is recognized. The second is placed on the drop - from then on 121 BPM and everything before the drop is suddenly 120.94.

Does creating stems degrade the overall sound quality of a song? I can hear that, for example, vocals don't always sound great when listened to as a stem, but I'm curious if the sound quality when all four stems are activated in the player is the same as the original file?

    • @maniacintosh
      @maniacintosh 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

As Stems are saved in AAC format it depends on source file. If you had a lossless file (WAV, AIFF, FLAC, ALAC) you convert to a lossy format. If you come from AAC or MP3 you have a minimal loss in quality due to reencoding but usually you won‘t hear that.

More precisely, I have a song that at a given moment has a pause and then starts, but on a different beat grid, the bpm remaining the same. When I set the new beatgrid...it breaks the first part. what's wrong with that? I didn't have this problem in traktor pro 3.

A quick follow up question: The Flexible Beat Grid, does it work with «live» tracks as well? I’m thinking old disco tunes where there is live drumming that fluctuates in tempo ever so slightly over the course of the track? Haven’t hade the time to properly test this in the demo - and if it doesn’t support grid mapping of fluctuating tempo in live recordings, is this planned for the future? I’m guessing this would need to work sort of like the mapping and stretching/tightening you can quantize a song to in Ableton Live?

Still need a way to have it actually be a flexible grid beat per beat and not just having regions. For quantized music with different tempo ranges this is fine but doesn't work for live music like funk, disco etc. It's a start, but still kinda meh. Been able to keep tracks synced on pioneer for ages when there's slight drift in tempo due to live playing... I wanna stay on traktor for other functions and I can play open format without beatmixing blends but the grid sometimes being quite far off in live music has been very annoying. This functionality is not what we djs mean by flexible grids. The grid is not flexing, it's going from one position to another. And we have to mark the changes manually. Very lackluster. Disappointing.

Yes! 🙌 ❤ but you have to analyze every track before going live because it takes a lot of power, I tried for testing purposes on a Mac mini m1 8GB Ram and had a few dropouts in the sound, also it takes a while to process and you have to do it track by track. But if you need to separate an acapella it’s there. I love it! What I love the most is that we get all the features from the subscription, it’s a bit more pricey but i kept my promise to native that I will buy it anyway but I hate subscriptions. I can’t subscribe to thousands of services.
I would be fine if they add new features as add ons to buy so that I can decide for myself what I need and what not. Better than subscriptions. ❤

So, after trying demo as owner of Traktor Pro 3 and Traktor Kontrol S8, it’s not looking worth to update at over 70€ asking price, since
pattern player is okay I guess, not ground breaking
ozone thing is okay and neat
but stem separation showing quite buggy at first in S8 controller and I can forget to even use it as quick thing when playing live, takes years to separate stems while playing so have to do that way before playing live, also S8 those mini sliders don’t work right away, have to fiddle them up and down until software registers them to adjust volume of stems, then it seems to work, but then software don’t work if I want exactly load song as track or stems when pressing select button on my S8 aka double clicking or single clicking won’t work that it would load song as stems or track, constantly loads it only as track and I have to always use macbook’s touchpad to select to load as stems or track, no matter if I fiddle in settings try to change it. Also now constantly software keeps crashing when loading stems third time, so that’s out of the window, don’t want to give money for unreliability… Also it horribly and randomly cuts audio like i’m struggling buffer running red while it’s even not, plenty of room in cpu buffer yet still it makes audio pop in and out 😵‍💫
Aaand then flexible beatgrids… It doesn’t work automatically but I have to manually always do these things…? Also doesn’t do nothing when playing new songs with old songs where tempo isn’t stable, it always starts to go out of tempo, no matter if synced, you still have to keep it manually at right beat like you had to back in the day… so that’s quite useless…

But yeah, that stem separation definetly makes audio cut out/pop out for milliseconds while it’s hammering CPU, which is odd since CPU buffer is around 40-60% when it does it while tracks playing at same time, and you say that stem separation is handled in other thread that shouldn’t affect audio etc, yet it still pops/cuts my audio at start of separation like 2-3 times on my i5 macbook pro.

I really think there's a massive issue with these developers only engaging with EDM style DJ's. Most DJ's I know play really varied music, with a lot of live instrumentation. I've got an app on my phone that plots BPM's accurately throughout the track. How hard can it be for a piece of DJ software to do the same then plot out the beatgrids? Am I missing something?

For tracks with beat irregularities, manually adjusting the grids is usually the best way to ensure precision.

    • @poshvibes4021

@NativeInstruments I'm a vinyl collector. That's my predominant format, so I use Traktor DVS for the 8,000 digital tracks I have. Of these 8,000 tracks, half will be live instrumentation. Of the 4,000 that are not, another half will have irregular beat structures when viewed from a European time structure (see Dilla Time).
On the waveform, I can clearly see where the beats are. It's as though Native Instruments have used an extremely formulaic mathematical logic for establishing beatgrids rather than an overtly obvious waveform pattern logic.
Even if this was to be done manually, a small bit of machine learning could have been used to pick up on the manual amendments and finish the job.
Honestly, I really think NI needs to diversify its engagement with DJs. Every example you use is some formulaic electronic music, rather than the wide variety of world music we hear in clubs and bars.
BTW, I love Traktor, but I do think this flexible beatgrid has built up expectations and really failed to deliver. Aside from a tech development, I think it's a marketing failure which has delivered so much negative feedback. People just don't think it has delivered on expectation, and I concur.

As someone who plays every type of music, with loads being live musicians, including Jazz, Latin, African, etc., I thought this feature was all to do with inconsistent BPM's , not distinct BPM changes. Not sure why it is important to map out distinct change like this example? These kind of tracks are rare, and simple to deal with manually.

Just upgraded my Traktor Pro - really enthusiastic to FINALLY be playing a lot of my old (recorded) vinyl inside a beat gridded set. So.. VERY DISAPPOINTED !!! this type of 'flexible beatgridding' is not flexible AT ALL - it is just "multiple beatgrids".
When you have old tracks with live played drums or old sequencers.. like in tracks slowly moving around half a bpm along the course of a track you need FLEXIBLE beat grids aka 'elastic' // having more than one bpm in a song is not flexible at all - it makes this new 'most requested' feature a total mis - Native, did you actually -read- what people are requesting or did you just read the topic-name?

..okay you have been reading all comments right? We are saying the ‘flexible’ beatgrids as you implemented them are only very very rarely an actual contribution to what we use your sofware for. When we say flexible, we think flexible, not multiple.. But no worries, we had give up on playing (semi) analog tracks on Traktor for years already so nothing is lost.. just a waste of dev hours on your side.
We will have to be selective and pick that one vinyl track we think is worth putting it in Ableton and manually adjust the complete track. So nothing changed, you just got our hopes up and let it drop ;)

So that's why I wouldn't buy it. sry
I would like a track preview for Traktor in the playlist. like in Rekordbox DJ. I often load 5 tracks until I find one that fits well. I mean the "red" tracks and the "blue" tracks. I hope you know what I mean.

It's not a real "flexible grid," but just a way to have 2 different FIXED grids in the same track. Almost no track has such abrupt tempo changes, it's useless. Look more closely at the competition and open your eyes! Like the STEMS, we want STEMS in LIVE !!!

all his years of waiting, since the beta of traktor scratch, for a flex grid like serato... in the end, nothing good... lame... not intuitive, nor ''direct'' a bit like the stems...in short zero

why djpro , or virtual dj, or other more less professional softwares beatgrid perfectly even on swinging or changing tempos, and the "jesus" of djing softwares still has to do it manually??
when traktor is gonna catch up ?? come on guys!! use AI to get traktor back to its standards :)

We recommend manually adjusting the beatgrid for the best precision, but we appreciate your feedback and will take it into consideration!
