  • Join me as I travel The Devil's Highway in the Cabeza Prieta Wildlife Refuge and the Barry M. Goldwater Air Force Range along the southern border of Arizona and Mexico. This will be a 4 or 5 video series. The dirt road is 250 miles long and traverses some of the most inhospitable desert on the the continent. Plus, it's full of history and has been in use for a 1,000 years and was a major path for the Spanish to travel from Mexico to the California coast since the mid-1500's. Video 5

Haters and Trolls they are everywhere, from Australia I love Chigger's channel, his sense of excitement and being a true story teller, from his channel and others I think I know more American history than a lot of Americans, Watch some of the dedicated Mudlarks hunting artefacts in the tide lines of the Thames and the canals for a dose of English history . They all have a huge amount of history to impart. at my age these channels keep my brain alive.

When I grew up in AZ, we used to get instructions from snake handlers when we were in Boy Scouts. They said one of the most common places for people to get bit by a rattle snake was the face, because they climb up onto them while rock climbing. Be careful out there brother Chigg.

Learned when I was a kid about water sources. If they have plants and bugs and slimy stuff the water is safe to drink (you may get giardia or something though). If the water is devoid of life, you'll be poisoned and die!!!!! That brown tank looked bad! The green ones okay!
Great video! I enjoyed it immensily!!! Thanks!

What a neat trick to get honey! I will likely never do that. It's still just so cool! I loved going over the great rock formations like you are doing. It's been many years since I've adventured in the desert. We used to really pack heavy with frozen two litre bottles of water... maybe you could consider doing this as well. when they're empty, smash them flat, screw the cap on again, and they pack out easily. You can blow them back up and refill them again too (a few times before the plastic cracks). Great video Chigg, I love those rocks!

The cactus you talked about, is know by many names, but Jumping Cactus (Cylindropuntia bigelovii) is the most common name. The spines are highly barbed and if you get stuck by them, they stick in your skin. Moisture in the skin, makes the spines swell and locks them in even tighter. It's very painful. Ask me how I know. It has very fragile stem sections. A section can break off and hitch-hikes a painful ride, with its victim. Were ever it drops off, it will send roots down and grow. Very common along trails and roads, because animals, inadvertently spread them. The flower is bright yellow to gold color.
Thanks for the fun video! Wish I was there.

The area here is just as rugged, but a bit greener. I've spent the last 20 years exploring the rough. It can be hard to show that restraint, and maintain safety, when there is so much to see, but it's still a necessity for certain. So, absolutely, stay safe. ANYTHING can happen out there at any time. Never take the landscape for granted. Step on rocks, and not over them. Rattlesnakes could be laying in a crack on the other side.
Thanks for taking us through there!

This was a nail biter for sure. Glad you made it out safe. I wished when you went into that cave that there had been a wonderful Native American pictograph on the wall. Still, it was really fantastic seeing the wells and just how difficult they were to get to. No wonder so many folks died trying to reach them. Truly amazing country out there. Thanks so much for your efforts and for sharing this adventure with us.

My friend Gene taught me that trick only you carried a little match box with flour in it catch a bee in the garden put it in the box shake it up open it be takes off always directly for the hive. Walk a straight line till you find it. That's where the term Bee Line came from .
Your the only other person I've heard that knew that. When you started talking I thought is he going to tell about the Bee Line great job. Unexpected pleasure.
