  • Join me and Bill Southern of NuggetShooter.com. Bill is an experienced gold prospector and took me under his wing for a few days to show me the ropes of prospecting gold nuggets with a metal detector in the deserts of Arizona and how to properly use the Minelab Gold Monster 1000. This is the second part of the first day's hunt. In the first part, Bill showed me how to use the metal detector and found one gold nugget. In this part I use it for the very first time and find TWO GOLD NUGGETS!

    Beau another tip when you have just a bit left in scoop is to blow on it, gold is pretty heavy if you blow straight down on it softly most of the lighter dirt will fly away... key is to blow softly and slowly. Great video.

    When I go gem hunting out in Arizona and Southern Calif., I always take those cans of Vienna sausages because they are a quick meaty snack and they don't need to be refrigerated and they have a pull tab to open them.

  • @calvinh.8882
    @calvinh.8882 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    Chigg, You're right, That is what many call a Velvet Ant, but it one of a colorful group of wasps in the Mutillidae family... The males have wings, and can fly, and the females do not. so that's a female, and only the females are capable of stinging, and the sting is very painful. And their real name is a Dasymutilla magnifica.. Now say that 3 times fast.. lol..
    Here in Florida, we have the large red and black, and very beautiful, their hair looks kinda silky, and they're known as the Red velvet ant, or Cow Killers.. But they're also wingless wasps, and in the same family as the one in your video, the Mutillidae family.. And i know a pretty tough guy that got stung by one, and he damn near cried.. He says he will give them their space from now on.. lol.. And they do make a squeaking squealing sound, i'v heard them a few times, and all you have to do to make them squeal, is hold them down with a stick or something until they kinda panic.. And It's said that there are over 400 species of them in North America, and most are brightly colored..

      Calvin H. That is a very cool paragraph. Here in Michigan, we have some tiny red ants. They are somewhat harmless, although their bite is painful and stings a bit. The only true danger is that if for some reason a person is unconscious, near to the ant hill, you are in trouble! So, don't have a seizure or heart attack near the ant hill! Bad! Bad! Bad!

    • @calvinh.8882
      @calvinh.8882 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Clayton Smith, We have them here in Florida also, we call them fire ants.. And yes, if someone gets covered in them, they can kill.. There has been at least one young girl that i know of who die from them.. They say she fell into a large bed of them head first, and they got in her hair, nose, mouth, and ears.. Very sad thing..

      I guarantee he does this often but usually edits it out. You'll notice in his videos the quick cuts he does. Hes just trying to say something with all of his thoughts collected and so he says it the first time, thinks a little, does it twice more and finally gets it. He would just usually cut the mistakes out and cut to the part where he says what he was trying to say after thinking a bit. Nothing to be worried about.

    Looks like a type of velvet ant. Pretty nasty, but the ones you really want to watch out for in that area are the Tarantula Hawks. They're like 2nd on the pain scale of all stinging insects.

    • @susanolson3611
      @susanolson3611 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Snarkapotamus, did you make that up? 😀

    • @Snarkapotamus
      @Snarkapotamus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That makes no sense. What would I have to gain by making that up? I have first hand knowledge of both and the Hawk is the scarier of the two critters. They're large and kind of slow flyers, but they really pack a punch. And anywhere in the desert southwest where there are Tarantulas, there are Hawks.

    • @pyromen321
      @pyromen321 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tarantula Hawks are basically harmless, though. If you're not trying to catch them or slap them, they won't bother you.
      They're not like other types of wasps that sting on sight.
