    I am fast realizing after just 11 verses of Mark that my Bible will not hold all my notes. Thank you for so much information to help me grow in my knowledge of God’s word.

    It is wild how deep you can go on two verses🤯. I basically forgot we were learning about why Jesus would be baptized, this is awesome. Jesus has done so much more than I think a lot of people would realize. Jesus becomes greater and greater as I watch the Mark series.

    My dad, without any doubt, was my spiritual teacher and leader growing up and still is as my pastor now, and he taught me about 90% of what Mike teaches with the same exact verses growing up and now, for a really long time we were waiting and hoping for another to teach what My dad taught, and last year 2023 we found your channel, Thank you Mike for showing Me and dad we’re not the lonely kids on a hill.

    I thoroughly enjoyed this lesson. Just hearing the humbleness of such a mighty, powerful, righteous, and Holy God, draws my spirit to thirst and hunger for a closer, and nearer intimacy, which I know NOT how to obtain while still in the flesh, yet strive to arrive within His presence.

      just read the Scriptures, thar's EXACTLY what they're for:
      If ye love me, keep my commandments...He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. (John 16:15;21)
      "Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
      And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:31-32)

      For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.
      Romans 7:18‭-‬19... Even Saint Paul struggled. But HOLY SPIRIT is there to teach us and lead us to the Truth.
      The same Saint Paul said it in
      Galatians 6:9, And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

    For the last 6 years I have been forging a relationship with God. The way John was described with his food and clothing reminded me of his character. His actions spoke louder than words. It reminded me to put my energy into actions, not only words. To be a christian you have to act like one. Thank you so very much for the sermon/lesson.

    Great video! I'm really enjoying this series on Mark. I'm also excited that you brought up the idea of the "heavens" being "torn" open. That comment about sounding like something out of Star Trek really resonated with me. From my own study of scripture, ancient Mesopotamian cultures, and pop quantum theory, I've comee to lean towards the idea that "heaven" (the place where God dwells) is inter-dimensional. What was "torn" was the "veil" that separates our physical dimension from the spiritual dimension. I see the similarities between this and the veil in the Tabernacle and Temple that separated the presence of God from the people. Interestingly I've read that some scholars and theologians posit that the "veil" didn't exist at creation but rather was installed after Adam's sin hence why God freely walked in the garden in the cool of the day. The purpose of the veil is to protect man from being destroyed by the holy presence of God which is why the Lord told Moses that no one may look upon Him and live. Another interesting correlation is between the tearing of the veil in the temple at Christ's death signifying the end of the spiritual separation between God and man and culmination of God's plan of salvation and restoration in the description of the New heavens and new earth with the new Jerusalem descending from heaven thus ending the physical separation of God and Man.
    Don't know if any of that is right but it sure sounds cool, lol.

    Wow. Two thoughts.
    1. I've been a Christian for many years, and it's not until now that I see that the Bible is so well crafted, I find it incredibly unlikely that it was forged by men. Today pastors all over struggle in interpreting these things, and yet they are the advocates for Christ. Why then would men forge a lie, and to go to such great extent, and to what gain if it leads to righteous living?
    2. "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." Seems like there is a bit of a comedy at play here. Jesus gets baptized, and there is no cleansing or repentance to be done! Seems like His baptism also served to authenticate His righteousness in this manner.
    So glad I found your ministry Mike, thank you so much!

I just try to think more deeply that I will get the deeper meaning. But in truth only Jesus can save us. I am not sure to which view I hold. I saw the talk about the gospels by B.E. I had never heard of him before, didn’t know anything about him. I was impressed by his education and .authority and that he spoke to an auditorium full of students and others. I considered him a Christian.
    But as he proceded to tear the authenticy of the gospels apart, as well as the rest of the bible, As well as ridicule everything about them, I got this awful- awful feeling like blackness inside of me. It frightened me! And made me realize that this man was not at all a man of God!
    But I stuck it through and listened to the whole talk. And I am glad I did that, because now I know what you, Mike, are relating to when you mention his name.

    I’m enjoying this series so much! Thanks for your labor to deliver sound teaching. Question? The passage about the heavens being torn open has interested me as well. Could there be a connection in Isaiah 64:1a “Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down.” and later in Mark 15:38 when the veil tears? I think a similar Greek work is used in both verses Schizo.

    Jesus was baptized because:-
    1. He was showing us what we should do.
    2. This was God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit all together.
    3. He was showing us what was going to happen to him. He was showing himself dying - when he went under the water, buried - when he was under the water and rising again - when he came back up.

    -Matthew Henry says of the heavens being opened, that Jesus "had a glimpse of the glory and joy that was set before him, and secured to him, as the recompense of his undertaking. ... At one point in this video Mike Winger expresses an interest/curiosity about the heavens being “torn” open at Jesus’ baptism in the Jordan river, and seems to be wondering about its significance.
    I can’t help but think it has something to do with this:
    Jesus also referred to his crucifixion on the cross as his baptism - at which point the veil in the temple was torn open.

    Twenty-five or thirty years ago, Dr Chuck Missler discussed the concept the concept of the Heavens being rolled open or split open like a scroll as related in scripture to that of a hydrogen bomb blast rolling back the atmosphere literally like a scroll. I don’t recall the exact reference, however.

    Without knowledge of “adoption-ism” I also had a thought that maybe that meant Jesus became the messiah when the Holy Spirit came upon Him. Thank you for making it clear!

    • @myrandomness304
      @myrandomness304 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      When he was talking about adoption-ism, he was talking about Jesus being God's son not messiah. Possibly not an important distinction in this particular situation since adoption-ism is wrong but I am feeling the need to be pedantic so here we go. Jesus being messiah and being God's son are not the same thing. Jesus is the messiah because of what came to DO, he is God's son because of who he IS. in other words if Jesus had not come and fulfilled all of the old testament prophecies about himself he would not be messiah (but since that was always the plan Jesus has always been the messiah). Jesus is God's son because of who he is as a person of the trinity before time began.

    as for the skies tearing open, it could have been some sort of atmospheric event, just like at the moment of Jesus' death there was an earthquake and darkness. similarly, at his baptism, I imagine something similar to the sound of a cracking thunder might have occurred, because in other places in Scripture, whenever God's voice is heard from heaven, it is described by the people hearing it as being similar to the sound of a thunder. and after all, Luke 3:22 makes it clear that this event was a physical one. "and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: 'You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.'"
    I might be wrong, but for example that's how I always interpreted the voice of Jesus to sound like to the others who were with Paul on the road to Damascus. Also Exodus 19:19 says "As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him." and God had appeared on mount Sinai with a storm that involved lightning and thunder.

    Love your insights. I'd like to add another to Jesus' baptism. Symbolically, people were being spiritually cleansed of their sins. Jesus, being immersed in the same waters, was being immersed in those sins. He was symbolicallly taking on the sins of the people, a prophetic event.

      I agree. I don't believe baptism is symbolic but can see how some can beleive this according to scripture 1 pet 3:21 which talks about Noah being saved. I beleive what the bible says that when we are baptized we are buried and raised with him just as Christ was Rom.6: 3-4. Baptism takes a part in our Salvation. It is not symbolic.

    Loving this series. I've watched some of the end videos already but decided I should start from the beginning instead of jumping around.
    I know this is over 3 years late, but when Mike is speaking of "Modalism" and mentions the states of water, a deeper dig into chemistry allows for good analogy of water to God. There is a tool in chemistry called a phase diagram that shows where molecules exists in their different states (solid, liquid, gas) as a function of temperature and pressure, but there is a point on the phase diagram called the "triple point". The triple point is the temperature and pressure condition where the molecule exists in all three states in equilibrium (like the Trinity).
    I would love to get some feedback on this idea/analogy as I think it could be a good tool in discussing/explaining the Trinity to certain people.

    I totally think immersion is the correct baptism, but I do have to say it hit me like a brick when someone said the Bible shows it is correct because it says Jesus came up out of the water. I must have been 25 at the time, and had been baptised in a stream by immersion. I had read that verse many, many times, but the picture in my head was always Jesus coming up the river bank, out of the water. I never connected it with immersion. It isn't as clear as people think!

    Jesus is God, but He came in His Messianic form to teach us how to properly worship Him. Everything He did was for the atonement of OUR sin, and a sign for us to know that He is the one true God.

    I'm glad you had explained baptism so well and gave clear understanding about the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit because I believe they don't have the same sovereignty. The Father God almighty is above the Son Lord Jesus Christ but they are one in a mission as husband and wife become one flesh. To share the truth, please read in a bible John 10:16 it's about a prediction of Lord Jesus Christ about His true church or followers. These chosen people of God were predicted in a book of Isaiah about the one flock of Jesus.

    If you really want an explanation of how the heavens were torn open, do yourself a favor and 1. Re-read Genesis 1 and notice The Firmament separating the "waters above" from the waters below. 2. Notice the absence of "planets" from God's creation. 3. Watch "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Moon." And then 4. research Biblical Cosmology. It'll blow your mind (it did me) but give it a fair shot.

    Jesus being baptized to fulfill all righteousness points us to the law. One of the requirements of a high priest is mikvah. Could it be that God was letting us see a portion of Jesus's ordination according to Scripture? Of course, the mikvah is not all of the requirements but it is a portion. John, being of cohen line, would be a qualifying person.

    To show us how baptism should be done when we are of age and understanding. Not infant baptism. And without Baptism, we cannot be a follower of Christ. It is very critical when one goes deeper to understand baptism.

    Old Covenant Baptism vs. New Covenant Baptism (water vs. Spirit)
    Water baptism was a part of the Old Covenant system of ritual washing. The Old Covenant priests had to wash before beginning their service in the temple. (Ex. 30:17-30) When Christ was water baptized by His cousin John in the Jordan River, He was under the Old Covenant system. He also only ate certain foods, and wore certain clothes, as prescribed by the 613 Old Covenant laws. Christ was water baptized by John and then the Holy Spirit came from heaven. The order is reversed in the New Covenant. A person receives the Holy Spirit upon conversion, and then believers often declare their conversion to their friends and family through a water baptism ceremony. Which baptism makes you a member of Christ’s Church?
    The New Covenant conversion process is described below. (Born-again)
    Eph 1:12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ.
    Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
    (A person must “hear” the Gospel, and “believe” the Gospel, and will then be “sealed” with the Holy Spirit.)
    Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
    (See Jer. 31:34 for the New Covenant promise, and 1 John 2:27 for the fulfillment)
    ============
    Which baptism is a part of the salvation process, based on what the Bible says?
    What did Peter say below?
    Acts 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.
    Acts 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
    Based on Luke 3:16, and John 1:33, and Acts 11:15-16, the most important thing about the word "baptize" in the New Testament has nothing to do with water. The Holy Spirit is the master teacher promised to New Covenant believers in Jeremiah 31:34, and John 14:26, and is found fulfilled in Ephesians 1:13, and 1 John 2:27. Unfortunately, many modern Christians see water when they read the word "baptize" in the text.
    Based on the above, what is the one baptism of our faith found in the passage below? How many times is the word "Spirit" found in the passage, and how many times is the word "water" found in the passage?
    Eph 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,
    Eph 4:2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
    Eph 4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
    Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;
    Eph 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, (See 1 Cor. 12:13)
    “baptize” KJV
    Mat_3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
    Mar_1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.
    Mar 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. (Water or Holy Spirit?, See Eph. 1-13.)
    Luk_3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
    Joh_1:26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;
    Joh_1:33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
    1Co_1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
    1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. (See Eph. 4:1-5)
    Heb 9:10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. (Old Covenant ----> New Covenant)
    How many people have been saved by the Old Covenant water baptism of John the Baptist?
    Who did John the Baptist say is the greatest Baptist that ever lived in Luke 3:16? What kind of New Covenant baptism comes from Christ?
    Hebrews 9:10 Old Covenant vs. New Covenant
    (ESV) but deal only with food and drink and various washings, regulations for the body imposed until the time of reformation.
    (Geneva) Which only stood in meates and drinkes, and diuers washings, and carnal rites, which were inioyned, vntill the time of reformation.
    (GW) These gifts and sacrifices were meant to be food, drink, and items used in various purification ceremonies. These ceremonies were required for the body until God would establish a new way of doing things.

    (NLT) For that old system deals only with food and drink and various cleansing ceremonies-physical regulations that were in effect only until a better system could be established.
    (YLT) only in victuals, and drinks, and different baptisms, and fleshly ordinances-till the time of reformation imposed upon them .
    ============================================================================================================
    What the modern Church needs is a New Covenant Revival (Heb. 9:10) in which members of various denominations are willing to re-examine everything they believe and see if it agrees with the Bible, instead of the traditions of men. We need to be like the Bereans. It will be a battle between our flesh and the Holy Spirit. It will not be easy.
    Nobody can completely understand the Bible unless they understand the relationship between the Old Covenant given to Moses at Mount Sinai and the New Covenant fulfilled in blood at Calvary.
    What brings all local churches together into one Body under the blood of Christ? The answer is found below.
    New Covenant Whole Gospel:
    Let us now share the Old Testament Gospel found below with the whole world. On the road to Emmaus He said the Old Testament is about Him.
    He is the very Word of God in John 1:1, 14. Awaken Church to this truth.
    Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
    Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by husband unto them, saith the LORD:
    Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
    Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
    Is the most important genealogy in the Bible found in Matthew 1:1 (Gal. 3:16)? Is God's Son the ultimate fulfillment of Israel (John 1:49)? Why has the modern Church done a pitiful job of sharing the Gospel with modern Orthodox Jews? Why would someone tell them they are God's chosen people and then fail to share the Gospel with them? Who is the seed of the woman promised in Genesis 3:15? What did Paul say about Genesis 12:3 in Galatians 3:8? Who is the "son" in Psalm 2? Who is the "suffering servant" of Isaiah 53? Who would fulfill the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34? Who would fulfill the timeline of Daniel chapter 9 before the second temple was destroyed? Why have we not heard this simple Old Testament Gospel preached on Christian television in the United States on a regular basis?
    Once a person comes to understand the New Covenant promised to Israel and Judah in Jeremiah 31:31-34, which is found fulfilled by Christ during the first century in Hebrews 8:6-13, and Hebrews 10:16-18, and specifically applied to the Church in 2 Corinthians 3:6-8, and Hebrews 12:22-24, man-made Bible doctrines fall apart.
    Let us now learn to preach the whole Gospel until He comes back. The King of Israel is risen from the dead! (John 1:49, Acts 2:36)
    We are not come to Mount Sinai in Hebrews 12:18. We are come instead to the New Covenant church of Mount Zion and the blood in Hebrews 12:22-24.
    1Jn 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
    1Jn 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
    1Jn 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

    I think most Protestants get it wrong when they say Catholics sprinkle you when you are water baptized. Guess what?. The Priest "sprinkles" the congregation for a blessing. They use some kind of censor. (spelling?) Then when a person is water baptized, they use a baptismal font and POUR water over your head. At least this is the way they did "blessings" and baptisms at the Catholic Church I used to attend.

    Why did Jesus need to be baptized?
    1.) Washed with water
    2.) The Holy Spirit descended upon Him and remained
    3.) 30 years of age
    4.) The Father blessed Him as the Witness from heaven....
    Exodus 29:1,4 1 “Now this is what you shall do to them to consecrate them, that they may serve me as priests. 4 You shall bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the tent of meeting and wash them with water. (Water Immersion) Verse 7 - You shall take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him. (Holy Spirit Dove descends and remains on Jesus as The Anointing)
    Numbers 4:46-47 - All those who were listed of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the chiefs of Israel listed, by their clans and their fathers' houses, 47 from thirty years old up to fifty years old, everyone who could come to do the service of ministry and the service of bearing burdens in the tent of meeting, (30 Years Old) (occurs 7 times in the chapter)
    Numbers 6:22-2722 "Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 23 “Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, ‘Thus you shall bless the sons of Israel. You shall say to them: 24 The Lord bless you, and keep you; 25 The Lord make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you; 26 The Lord lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace.’ 27 “So they shall invoke My name on the sons of Israel, and I then will bless them.” (The Father's Voice as Witness and Blessing)
    Jesus needed to be consecrated as a priest - specifically our High Priest. That is the reason for His baptism.
    - God perfectly expressed (Triune)
    - humanity perfectly expressed
    It was necessary to fulfill the righteous requirements of the law, and display the Father's supernatural affirmation of both His identity and ministry.
