  • In today’s study of Mark 2:13-22 we cover some often misused passages in Mark, we test our Christian worldview, ask if Jesus really "partied with sinners", we examine some parables of Jesus and note how the beautiful message of the gospel also includes the sober reality of man’s sinfulness. The parables we are covering (though they are more like illustrations really) are the bride groom, the old and new wine/wineskins and the

Or put another way: "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we acknowledge our sins, He is faithful and just and forgives us our sins" (1 John 1:8,9).

Pharisees devoted their entire lives to the study of the Torah. That some lied and pushed the Talmud on them as genuine is another thing entirely. Christians could learn a lesson from Pharisees since only 11 percent of you have bothered to read the entire Bible. But then again, you HAVE been sold the lie that the Torah doesn't matter, either--just like they had.

At least the Pharisees study the Torah, to know what sin is, at least they can acknowledge their sin. Otherwise after being saved the same people will be lost again, not knowing what sin is .

@@thedisciple5115 The book of Romans argues that everyone knows what sin is, since everyone has a conscience that accuses / excuses them. No matter your standard -- Mosaic law or some other code -- you will fall short of perfection.
The problem with the Pharisees and the rabbinic tradition is esotericism -- twisting the plain meaning of scripture to justify all kinds of nonsense and wickedness.

Beautiful teaching. I got saved when reading the parable of the pharisee and the tax collector. At the time I didn't even believe there was such a thing as sin, but as I read I realised that I was the tax collector and I turned my heart to the Lord and accepted his mercy. That was over a decade ago, and the parable still moves me every time I hear or read it.

Fasting is really interesting and powerful in so many ways. I fast mainly for healing (I have a few autoimmune issues that are greatly reduced by extended fasting). Strict water fasting is hard at the beginning, but becomes easier the more you do it. I like to think that God wanting us to fast is multifaceted. He wants us to fast to draw nearer to him, to deny our flesh and focus on Him more, but also fasting is incredibly good for us. Fasting was practiced for mental clarity for many years by the Greek thinkers. Most cultures have fasting requirements for periods of time. Every time you get the flu you naturally fast so your body can focus on fighting and healing. I am just so amazed by God’s love for us, that even his commands to draw us near and worship Him are deeply beneficial and good for us too. God’s love is truly amazing and blows my mind.
While the purpose of my fasting is to heal me so I can be a better Christian, wife, and mother, I always find myself desiring God more when I fast. I naturally spend more time praying and reading from the Bible without setting out to do it. I think even when I fast for selfish reasons, God uses it to draw me nearer to Him and blesses me with awesome healing. Through water fasting, God has healed me enough that I am able to walk and function normally. I was almost completely disabled just 18 months ago and now I feel better than I did 20 years ago as a teenager.
Also, I’m deeply grateful for your videos Mike. They have been a big blessing in my life and I’m grateful God lead me to your ministry. I appreciate the dedication and research put into these videos and the loving way you deliver them.

Most of the people I talk to thinks because they keep a certain day of the week, or because they don't eat unclean food think they are good people.
God doesn't think that is good just because you keep or do certain things. Your faith in Christ is what justifies us.

I think fasting also freed up time to spend with God. Historically, preparing food was a very time consuming process. Fasting is often paired with prayer and not having the distraction of preparing and eating food helped with focusing on the prayer part of what they were doing.

We can spend time with God anytime. He lives with us. True it doesn't hurt to miss meal or two if we want to do it for spiritual reasons, but it doesn't make us any closer to God than we are now. I think if we any benefit from it we ought to once in while.

Speaking to the practice of fasting to hold God to ransom - your are so right pastor Mike, God is not beholden to our timelines and doesn't owe us a response to every prayer.
It's so easy to innocently fall into this mindset, especially when this is the practice in many churches.
Spoiler - in Mark 8:11-13, the Pharisees demand a miraculous sign from Jesus, and Jesus sighed and said he definitely wouldn't give any such sign to this generation.

Great message brother Mike..Jesus came for the lost sheep! I thought I would pass along a nugget from the word. I always wondered why 11 of the 12 disciples were Galileans and in Acts when the spirit comes upon them Peter says Galileans from all over were speaking in tongues but understood each other. Well in Ruth 4 when putting forth this beautiful prophecy about Ruth joining the ranks of Leah and Rachael and the one who will be famous in Bethlehem...Boaz being a kindred redeemer who will then become our redeemer. Well that word for redeem and redeemer is Gaal...Galileans.. so redeemers is baked right into the cake as it were! If you look at the meaning of each Hebrew letters that make up Gaal it makes even more concrete sense: Gaal is Gimel, Aleph Lamed we get, walk and gather (gimel) strength of God (aleph) led by the shepherd (lamed). You show a real heart for the truth of the word. God bless as we enter into the latter days!

Re: the Prodigal Son, Tim Keller's book The Prodigal God actually suggests that there IS a sacrifice of a sort that must be made in the parable: by restoring the prodigal to full status as a son, he is now entitled to a share of the inheritance again. This might explain why the eldest brother was so angry about the party the father threw reinstating the prodigal son. He wasn't only jealous over the expense of the party itself (though that's what he claimed to be mad about), but also because now the prodigal son gets to take part of his share in inheritance, a share which the eldest brother considered wholly his own since the prodigal had already squandered his.
The parable, among other things, is meant to contrast the jealousy of the eldest son with Christ, who didn't merely stay home with the father, but tracked the lost down and with a great sacrifice, joyfully restored us to sonship with the father and made us heirs.

I think the parable He speaks here has to do with "works" and salvation. A patch is fasting without having received salvation. It profits nothing, or rather it does harm because you actually think you are earning brownie points with God. A proper fast is beneficial only if you have already attained salvation. Don't think that you can fast your way out of sin. The new wine is the new life of Christ or teaching of Christ that requires regeneration in order for it to work. You cannot be a Christian without giving over to Christ and becoming a new creation. You will fail/wine bursts out. He continues to expose the need for salvation to the Pharisees and that they should not trust in their own righteousness and works.

Thank you for this teaching. Especially the clarity on fasting. I just have a question of the fast Esther declared before going before the King on behalf of her kinsmen after Mordecai approached her. A lot of the time I've heard Pastors use that example of how fasting works especially if you have a desired future outcome. What is the correct biblical principle to be learnt from Ester's fast?

    • @thereseservais924
      @thereseservais924 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think it was paired with humility and confessing sins of herself and the folk and bringing the whole situation before God's throne, the king of kings. I think fasting is not about claiming things by the Lord but putting oneself aside that we can make a way for Him, recognizing His sovereignty in the situation. The mindset of Esther was : "I will go to the king. If I perish, I perish." And the folk fasted those 3 days with her.
I have also experienced fasting giving me new strengths afterwards or more sensitivity for the Word of God. And I have also fasted according to the flesh and this was meaningless. Jesus fasted 40 days long pushed by the Holy Spirit. I think that was another kind of fasting than the one of the pharizees... 😉
There are plenty of stuff to learn about it but one thing remains in common : to keep humble before the Lord and let Him lead us on His path.
      God bless you.

Thanks again Mike...finished the teaching. I am glad you hit on the new covenant and the blood of Christ...praise our blessed Savior! You obviously have done research on this Hebrew roots movement as have I and my conclusion is that they have an agenda and one that is to tip the ship as it were back to the law so your message is spot on. Having said that I have found oodles of nuggets in studying the old testament along with the new, especially with regards to this idea of the wedding. In those terms Jesus reveals himself as the bridegroom who came to state his intent to marry and has paid the price for the bride and has sopped the bread and had his 3rd cup of wine..I believe whereas the last cup will be at the wedding banquet. I would love for you to do teaching on this. In my studies about prophecy heading into latter days is from Rev 12...she that travails in birth...the sign in the heavens is what is discussed in Micah 5...the daughter of Zion, the daughter of Jerusalem, the bride of Christ. Evidence is word for daughter in Hebrew is bath..Beyt Tav...House or family of the mark of the covenant. 12 stara reflects the dream Joseph had where his brothers were the stars and they get upset saying do we have to worship you. Rev 12 also says the dragon will war with the remnant who have the testimony of Jesus. This is a risen remnant that is being born. Oh btw that word for born in Rev 12 is tikto..strongs 5088 and is the root for the bow that the rider on the white horse ia wearing..toxon strongs 5115. Only time these words are used in the word! So the white rider goes forth after this remnant is born which would include both houses of the covenant..Ezek 37:16. If the 42 months is literal then the sign from Sept 2017 would give us spring 2021. Second reference would be from 2 Sam 5 where David becomes king over all the tribes and rules total of 40.5 years. Prophetic jubilee year is 50x40.5 is 2025. If Jesus was indeed born 4 bc this would also point to 2021 for the beginning of final establishment of the the King on his throne. And of course at the end is the wedding banquet!

Mike , I personally really enjoy your way of an in depth study and focus. Thank you very much for your sincere approach. The only thing that I find very harmful is your attack on the law of so called law of Moses. Every one must just be honest here: does Jesus really abolish the universal law of "do not kill" and "do not steal", or in fact it's only one commandment that just doesn't line up with the understanding of the majority of Christians? The law is whole, it was given to people as whole, therefore if abolished then it had to be done as whole, but no one really believes that those other nine commandments lost their importance. Why the only one then? I hope everyone will find courage to choose the truth rather than commonly accepted ideas and opinions.

Fasting is NOT about self denying. It is about being so wound up in prayer and study you do not even think about eating. Just like when we are so busy cleaning , working g, researching, swimming, etc. that we do not even think about food. It is FULL attention on Him.

On the wine skin parable. I have to disagree. When you look at it in full context, Juese was just asked why he picked his followers from the sinners and not the pharisees and the parable was his answer. The best that I have seen on this is the old and new wine is old and new teachings on the law, the old and new skins are people that will be learning. Basically, the parable is not about the message so much as those learning and spreading the message. This also accounts for the line in Luke where it is said that those who drank both the old and new wine would say the old is better. The pharisees learned one way of teaching the law and if Jesus were to take them as his students they might reject his teachings as they are different. Basically it would be like the modern phrase "you can't teach an old dog new tricks"

Mike, I'm really hoping you can shed some light on this for me. I don't know what to make of Mark 2:17, specifically, as in the KJV it reads "...I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." My issue is that I notice in the modern translations the last two words are omitted, and I can't help but feel that this changes the meaning/message of this verse, or at the very least, leaves out an important component of it. The same two words are omitted from Matthew 9:12 in the modern translations as well. I've looked across the different versions, and have even found the Ethiopian Bible, and after translating the two verses via Google translate, it has shown that the verse reads as it does in my KJV bible.
With those two words ('to repentance') left in, in line with his analogy of the healthy not needing a physician, but the sick. And that he came to call the sinners, and NOT the righteous, the 'repentance' aspect, at least in my opinion, serves as the prescription that he as the 'physician' offers to the sinners (the sick) to whom he came here to call.
What do you make of this, brother Mike?

    • @nolanlott5540
      @nolanlott5540 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree that the inclusion of "to repentence" sheds even more light onto the parable because only the sick need and seek a doctor. And that goes with the pharisees thinking they are righteous and not sinners. Still learning but that's seem to be an important inclusion.

Don’t know if you’re still there, but I thought of the saying ‘love the sinner but hate the sin.’ If we do it for others, we can do it for ourselves. Also, if it’s helpful, there’s John 3:16: ‘for God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life’. He loves you (& all of us), and wants to bring us out of slavery to sin. We just have to say ‘yes, please Jesus! I’m sorry for my sin, and I need You in my life to save me, help me and guide me. Be my Saviour and my God.’ All the best, and God bless you!

    Christian world view
Christians have the world view that excludes everyone who is not under the blanket of Christ's forgiveness of sins as not in the family, and not of God. and I don't agree with that. I believe Elohim created everyone - and is there for everyone - and wants everyone to be in alignment with them. and the way to be in alignment with them is to be conscientiously attuned to them, talk to them, prayer. And I also believe in Jesus. I believe Jesus is great. and I attune to Jesus in my heart when I see that my ways have been selfish, and I see that my ways have not been an expression of the light and love and friendship of Elohim. So i am growing with you all. BAREISHIT BARA ELOHIM. Our good nature to be friendly, aware and loving is the nature of Elohim. We are in their image.
Scripture is what we use as science. And our own experience (of growing with Elohim and Yeshua, and the Heavenly Father of Love) is the evidence we have that proves the scripture (or Torah) true in our case. Those who talk to God and ask Him to inspire them do grow in wisdom and love. This is actual science. This is real life and a real foundation for really growing in real life.

Hey man, I like this series you did man. But I want to mention your interpretation of the old wine and the new wine skins as it pertains to your understanding of the new covenant verses the old.
There are in fact an over arching amount of verses that do not support the understanding you have of the parable. Considering, what the old covenant and the new covenant actually is according to the scriptures.
The new covenant as you know is listed out in (Jeremiah 31:31-33), as well as (Ezekiel 36:24-27). The context in both of these verses isn't talking about a new law, or doing away with the old law. In fact, no where in the entirety of the old testament did God tell us that He was going to do away with anything in the old testament but on the complete contrary, (Ezekiel 40-46), (Zech 14), (Isaiah 66), (Isaiah 2:2-4) and Micah 2 all testify, having 4 witnesses, that the law will be established when Messiah comes back in His Kingdom and He will rule the nations with this law. His government will be founded on the law given to Moses. So there's no way that we can gather an understanding from the old testament, that the new covenant is going to do away with what God established as a commandment.
The new covenant is this. That the law will be put in your heart. When you read whats in the Torah, Moses tells them that they were NOT given a heart to know (Deuteronomy 29:4) "Yet to this day the Lord has not given you a heart to know, nor eyes to see, nor ears to hear."
The new covenant somehow being a covenant where God does away with His Commandments because they're too hard, or it's a imperfect law, is not found in scripture. Nothing was wrong with the law. It was us. Just like we don't need to change our standards to appeal to people and bring them to Christ, neither does God need to change His standards to bring us to Himself. Which is why the new covenant isn't about changing God. It's about changing us.
This is supported all throughout the gospels as Messiah says, there will come a day where worshippers will worship in spirit and truth. We will no longer obey God out of doing merely religious works, following only the letter as Paul puts it. But we will have a genuine heart for God and our faith in Messiah will walk that out. Obeying His Commandments. Not breaking, or doing away with The Commandments of God, but fully carrying them out in spirit and in truth as Paul puts it in (Romans 3:31). And we must properly understand what Messiah meant by fulfilling the law. He wasn't contradicting Himself in the same verse as He explicitly Commanded us to not believe that He came to do away with anything in the old testament. He came to fulfill them, which means to fully carry out. That word is used 4 times in the new testament, and 1 of which you quoted from in your video on John baptizing Jesus. Jesus came to fulfill all righteousness and part of that was getting baptized. That same word is used in Matthew 5:17. So it would be inconsistent to say that part of the word fulfill means that Christ did it so we don't have too, yet as it pertains to when He fulfilled baptism and all righteousness, having being the same word, we interpret it as something completely different. But the fact of the matter is, that fulfill means to fully carry out, which is exactly what Messiah did with the law and the prophets.
I would also like to add that in this video, you tell us that it's not good to slap Jesus unto other religious practices such as bhuddism, Islam or the new age, yet that's exactly what we do with Christmas, and you yourself have a video supporting it. So that in turn reveals a double standard, as that does line up with your theology as it pertains to the old covenant vs the new. Not to say that you don't truly believe in Messiah, but that does reveal itself.

I think the Favourite theme being no religiosity to preaching Gospel for lay persons, a fitting World view must be sans rather a self styled Messianic people if christians in the Greek world or nazranis were called at the time of disciple St. Thomas, and that Christ was New wine or vine for new branches to sprout if old Religions supposed to have had been poured out yet not sufficed, remember Jesus's miracle at the wedding couldn't wait for longer when disciples would be on their own soon often fasting thanks to Holy spirit's helping at hands as also Father's house with many rooms be readied for expectant Finality event..

Psalms 150 says nothing about drums

    • @MikeWinger
      @MikeWinger  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

In my opinion, for what it’s worth, there are a few reasons to think drums are included in Psalm 150’s admonition to use various musical instruments to praise God.
      1) the list seems to be inclusive of any and all instruments rather than an exclusive list which means to rule out any that aren’t mentioned. This seems evident from the end of the Psalm which says “let everything that has breath praise the Lord”. Implying extending the principle of this Psalm beyond specifically mentioned instruments.
      2) tambourines and loud, clashing symbols are mentioned specifically. These are similar to drums and even comprise a portion of a drum set. Would we be fair is saying loud clashing symbols are ok but a quieter kick drum is bad?
      3) absent a command not to use certain instruments we seem to have an attitude of acceptance in using whatever instruments we have to praise God.

I have found that worshipping in a church that uses guitar and drums is not conducive to a holy atmosphere. In addition, the modern lyrics are usually not as Scriptural or articulate about the teaching of the Gospel and life in Christ as older traditional hymns and particularly the rich beautiful classics of music from all the previous centuries. The one dimensional modern Christian music that abounds in protestant churches is so lacking in depth and beauty I find it unbearable.

  • @ge0ld0re

You're awfully hung up on DRUMS! But you've got the wrong idea! ~ When I was a foolish kid of 24 I introduced drums into our tiny church's worship. Our drummer was a recent convert having played drum in a nightclub before. His drums were "tuned for praise;" as a favorite hymn says in the 5th verse, "Let every instrument be tuned for praise; Let all sing who have a voice to raise; And give us faith to sing always.." ~ You see, it is not the instrument [be it drums or bass (which I would leave out in the street with the drums) or flute or piano... is the instrument AND the performer filled with a heart and spirit TUNED FOR PRAISE, or do they seek their own glory? If the latter, they have their reward, and many drummers and bass players and even some singers have their reward now, as the glory was not given where it belongs.

    • @ge0ld0re

...and you then end up in frustrating conversations with people who have the wrong focus, thinking the offending instrument is the evil when not praising God is the evil.
