How To: Dave's Mod on XR650L [4 Minutes]

  • This is a basic mod that helps throttle response significantly! In addition to Dave's Mod many other people also buy a UNI air filter, install a new exhaust, and desnorkel their bike. In total this cost me $14 rather than the dynojet kits which are significantly more $$$. In my case, I have a UNI air filter and bought an XR's Only Header & Exhaust following this mod I did. If you have any questions- put them in the comments below, and I'll be glad to answer them! Thank you again for all your support.

    I did this carb mod to my 08 BRP. I also added an FMF pipe (retained factory header), removed smog pump and replaced w/ baja smog kit, changed out front sprocket from 15 to a thicker 14 teeth..and the difference is very noticeable...it went from being a Japanese sewing machine to being a real 650! After getting it back together from carb mod and sprocket swap, within first minute of test ride I gave her a little to much welly, and spun the back tire on the rim effectively shearing off the valve stem, so be careful of that...and of front wheel wanting to come up while accelerating into a leaning turn! That bike is a monster. I love it!

    Hi ONE_Terrabike, I have a xr600r, that has the 650 carb, just did the mod, (awesome instructions) first question, why is the shim required? And second would those jets work with the 600 engine?
    On another note what oil would you also recommend? In Queensland Australia hot summers and warm winters low of 10celcius. I put 15-40 high quality diesel oil in and after 100k’s it’s started backfiring and stalling. That’s why I did Dave’s mod.

    • @one_terrabike3151
      @one_terrabike3151  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pulled this from the internet: Shimming the needles will get rid of a nasty lean spot coming right off idle. If your bike stalls, hesitates, hacks or coughs when you are trying to pull off from a stop, you could use shimming. Next off: I admittedly know little about the XR600 besides the fact that it's very similar to the NX650 and XR650L... simply search 'XR600 jets' and look around! 🙂 As for oil I just started to run 10w-40 Motul 7100 and I'm in GA where it's been fine at 93° F (~33.9° C)... I run synthetic as it's MUCH more resistant to high heat where it won't break down as fast and also permits easier shifting. As for the stalling... Check your valve clearances as those might be off spec 😁

      Sorry for the minor delay in my response-- Yes, I would rejet it still as you're using an exhaust with much less restriction than the stock one. If it means anything to you - by rejetting you're allowing more gas to the system which will also help with cooling thus improving engine longevity.

    • @one_terrabike3151

      To keep it simple 55/158 jetting is the 'standard' with even a stock exhaust. Over the months with my aftermarket system I switched to 55/160 and that's right for my bike. Now, what you should worry about is making sure you oil your UNI Air Filter 👌...foam filters need air filter oil to work as designed. Thanks for watching!

    Is my brother all Honda models the same carburetor,Same as this fuel pump . Is it easy to maintain a Honda 650 motorcycle? What is the difference between a single cylinder 650 cylinder and the difference between two cylinders like Africa Tawan

    • @one_terrabike3151
      @one_terrabike3151  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's very easy to maintain a Honda XR650L in my opinion. There are very few electronics so diagnosis can usually be done yourself 😁. However, not every honda model uses the same carburetor. The one on the Honda XR650L is a CV Carb which is better 'all around' than a lot of other carbs such as a pumper carb which simply has significantly better throttle response. As for differences between a single cylinder and twin cylinders: the single is known for lots of torque and low end power at the expense of having more vibration where the parallel is usually more consistent throughout it's power (a lot less bottom end power) but is much smoother while riding. May I ask how you plan to ride?

      The snorkel delete won't have much benefit with the stock air filter, but I'd definitely try the standard 55/158 considering you're getting a new exhaust. However considering that might be a tad too rich at speed consider grabbing a 155 too just in case 😁. So buy a 55, 155, and 158 😎

    Don't cut the tab off of the idle mixture screw, cut the piece on the float bowl that it bumps into instead. The written version of Dave's Mod makes that clear.

    • @one_terrabike3151
      @one_terrabike3151  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It honestly makes no difference to my knowledge. 15-16k miles later and it's brought me no problems grinding off the tab where I did. Looking back I see the benefit of that method (easier to turn by your hand), but honestly the engine would be so hot around there that I don't want to stick my hand there to do an adjustment 😂. I bought a FTB extended mixture screw if I want to do that. However, I found myself never needing to adjust the screw whether I was at sea level or 6k feet above that. Just my opinion though from my experiences! Take care & thank you for watching!

      @one_terrabike3151  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Drilling the slide lift-holes allows the vacuum to have a greater and quicker effect on the lifting of the slide. This will increase the responsiveness of the slide and therefore increase air-flow to the intake. This is usually necessary to match the increase in fuel delivery allowed by the new needle and main jet." (KZRider.com)

      Rejetting the carburetor is simply changing the main/slow jet, so yes it's possible (you could easily start there). However, the 'Dave's Mod' calls for it to be drilled so that couldn't be completed without it being drilled (that I could understand voiding a warranty). Also, really try to buy used if at all possible-- just buy a low milage one! I bought mine with 600 miles for a little over 4k USD (MSRP runs for ~7k I do believe). Just check the countershaft splines as the factory front sprocket will destroy it if it's left in for a few thousand miles (I've heard ~6-8k miles ppl had noticed it if they didn't get the improved one)

    I think I would try to figure out how to replace that toilet tank Keihin piece of garbage with a proper direct pull slide Mikuni carb.

      It's fairly simple as I'm sure you're aware, but unfortunately not everyone can afford a new carburetor 😔. A $13 mod that'll make some improvement and save their piston from excessive heat though is indeed worth it. It's not for everyone and ideally your recommendation is superior. Thanks for watching! 😁

      Dave is a guy found throughout XR forums who basically does/did EVERYTHING on the XR650L as far as mods goes to make it run better and this was one of the things on his list that people have done for year now! Thanks for watching! 🙂

    1 I would suggest this pouring upgrade mod whatever you want to call it change your gearing that would be your sprockets 14 in the front 47 in the rear I double my gas mileage dropped my RPMs at 60 miles an hour down to 1800

    • @one_terrabike3151
      @one_terrabike3151  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Per gearing commander that setup at 59.4mph would be 4200 rpm. That isn't bad. Stock gearing is 15/45 so at that same RPM of 4200, it'd go 66.5mph. You might be mistaking a number somewhere but your math unfortunately doesn't add up so far. Also, I'm slightly doubtful about your gas milage. Unless you were getting 20-25 mpg before and now it's 40-50 it's simply unrealistic. Anyways, to answer your first question Dave is just the name attached to this mod. No clue who he is but that's what all 650L owners know this mod by. (Use gearingcommander.com for your own research -- it has preloaded info for the XR650L)

      Thanks for replying I will enjoy this. 15 45 gearing 15 divided by 45 equals 0.3 now my back tire is turning one time while the front sprocket turns three times to keep up with the back tire. Now 14 / 47 is 0.29 my back tire is spinning one time turn 2.9 times for every rotation of the back tire there's your gas mileage I was getting 40 miles to the gallon with one tank on the XR650L I am now getting 65 to 70

      What’s so difficult about measuring the last section of a long dead Kings index finger, dividing it into 32 sections and counting out 5 of them? Seems silly the first few times but you’ll get used to it.
