As a Munich citizen, I know most of these stores, but the hat store was new to me. Thanks for introducing. If I should ever run into you by chance, I will spend you a good coffee :-)
Was it you who quoted a friends grandmother when she said "We are too poor to buy cheap things.". I took that to heart and when I watch your curated approach to life, I feel such relief. Thank you for this!
I remember that too! I repeated it to my children …. And they look at me puzzled 🤔. I said you heard me correctly …. It means save your money and wait to buy quality, so you buy it ONCE ! They won’t buy quality pots so I buy them for their birthdays, Christmas and now you won’t have warped pots that don’t sit flat and perfectly on your stove . It’s nice to have a beautiful experience using quality made things. I wished I learnt that in my 30’s when outfitting my home … I made so many repeat purchases of things that didn’t last very long.
Buying quality is also an environmental decision. We have finite resources and cheap manufacturing from countries such as China not only are wasteful, they are polluting.
The Manufactum store reminded me on my grandma from Germany she always kept the house so clean and tidy with quality items and raised us to make our bed with hospital corners and clean up, I used to think it was annoying but now at age 40 I value quality goods and a minimal, tidy home ❤
Two or three weeks ago I was really surprised when I saw you walking by in Munich Haidhausen. Such a nice video. It really renewed my old love for this beautiful city I live in
Beautiful, Rajiv! Here's one more tip for next time: Kremer Pigmente's Shop. They have a branch in NYC but their big shop is in MUC. They have materials for artists, conservators, and music instrument makers. Pigments, glues, brushes, all sorts of tools. Amazing!
I live in Milan and my fiance and I head up to Munich about twice a year when he has business trips in town (and I tag along). Adding these shops to our to-do list for our December trip!
I'm 71 and still use things that were used by my Viennese grandmother, then my mother. Enamel kitchenware, scales, bed linens, table linens, handkerchiefs, nightgowns. Many of the linen items have lace that was made by my mother and grandmother. I also have some handmade wooden things that are in constant use in my home that were made by my grandfather, clocks, tables, inlaid boxes, rolling pin, spoons, his walking stick. All these things are more beautiful for their age. Sadly, my American grandchildren will not want any of these things, or even know what they are. I'm afraid that all these beautiful, quality items will simply be thrown away when I die. Makes me sad.
Love! Also I want to say thank you for the beautiful thumbnails. I love scrolling through my subscription list full of elegant thumbnails and only subscribe to those who take time to provide that lovely experience. Like you often say... It's those little moments 💖
Good morning from NZ. Please go and find yourself a beautiful old wooden darning mushroom and find someone who can teach you how to darn the hole in your socks. It is a beautiful skill to have and once mastered, is so aesthetically pleasing to look at and wear. It will keep your socks going for years and fill you with yet another little moment of joy every time you put the sock on. Much love x
If the socks are being “retired,” they make great dusting mitts 😀

It is so odd how things surface when you know about them! I bought a Lodenfrey wool tweed jacket this week at a thrift shop for $7.99. I want a Cape, too! Maybe someday.
Edited: Aargh! I meant failed to delight, not failed to disappoint. I’m pretty picky when my TH-camrs post travelogues, but yours have never failed to disappoint. I lived in Germany in the late eighties to early nineties and loved visiting shops and department stores. And remember, as for your bike it’s not goodbye but auf Wiedersehen, because you two will be meeting again.
I am a Canadian expat in Vienna. I also love Manufactum here in Vienna. Munich is a beautiful city and I am happy to have the opportunity to visit several times
OMG what a wonderful video. Munich is such a beautiful city. Brings back memories. Have you ever visited the Auer Dult Jahrmarkt that takes place 3 times a year? You can find lots of antiques there. And the nice department store Beck am Rathaus Eck? It’s worth stepping into. Again vielen Dank for this wonderful video Petra
My sister lives just outside Munich. I love to visit. Such a great region in a great country. And it's just three ang a half hour flight from the middle of Sweden where I live.
When my sister lived in Nuremberg I remember traveling in Germany and shopping in a Manufactum. We also used to go to the Gasthaus for schnitzel and walk to the bakery in the mornings. I still have my steins from all the Volksmarches. Those were some of the best times
I lived in Ingolstadt a few years ago and spent my fair share of days and even weeks in München. It's so interesting to see how different each individual's experience with the city can be, and I'm excited to be able to see the city with fresh eyes during my next visit. Thank you for this thoughtful video! ❤
Yes, more of this! You have been so inspiring to me, Rajiv. I am on a mission to replace (after they have been used up and recycled as much as possible) all of my plastic crap with well made and beautiful and useful things.
Ahhhh Memories for me...The music you played during the video was a dance I did with my grandfather the day of our wedding now 50 years ago. All 4 of my grandparents were born in Munich.
Sport Schuster is also, bizarrely, the only place where I can find socks that fit me and don't slip down while I am walking. They are merino wool, fit like a glove, are ridiculously expensive, but what can I do?!
A man off the world with his own bicycle in 3 special cities.😊 Who needs to throw coins into fountains in hopes to return, better too store ones bicycle, much better chances.😂
Danke 🍺
I feel you just see the world differently Rajiv you.look for beautiful things and find them. You need to try Spain I think you've u would love places like Alhambra and Guardalest where you can watch ladies make lace and old men making baskets sitting in Thier front step
Hello from Sweden!🇸🇪🇸🇪 Thank you Rajiv! For letting us know about the Manufaktúm shop... I found out that you can buy online, but they also have a shop in Stuttgart where 2 of my Cousins live... So I will chech rhe online shop out and then ask one of my Cousins to buy some things for me and who is then comming to visit here in Sweden later in November. And by the way the Riess name actually pronounces like the First word you said = like Reess but with a burred R. AND As you might know, Germany, just like here in Sweden, is a very environmental protectionous, Sustainable, thinking Country and have a lot of good products related to that.... Everything between Heaven & Earth! So once again Thank You🙏🏻💖🤗🇸🇪
Du, Du, bist mir im herzen......can't remember the words... Dietrich. Yes, I have to go back, too. Those lovely nursery rhymes. Hop, hop, hop...ueber Stock und ueber Steine...Heimweh!
Guten Abend, Rajiv😂. München is very very beautiful. Vaude is pronounced as 'vau' in 'fou'l and 'de' as day. Germany is No 1 on my bucket list. My German is like Trevor Noah's: angry poetry🤣🤣🤣 I get my wool socks "made in Italy " from tjmaxx. They will carry lot of European stuffs like chocolates, Christmas ornaments during Thanksgiving and Christmas time. I am feeling nostalgic about Munich seeing you there Rajiv. Thank you for taking us all virtually to Munich.
I knew a couple that played rational recorders. She made herself and her husband a Loden coats. I have never seen such fine fabric and sewing. They had so much fabric and therefore hung beautifully with plenty of fabric that allowed for braid movement.
Wow, now I want to visit Munich! It's so beautiful. I'm not a big shopper, but those shops look amazing. I especially got excited about the hat store, and the home goods store. Oh, and the Schnitzel!!
ohhh you are hitting my faves too. Manufaktum is always top on my list just to browse around until I spy an absurdly expensive must have item - actually have several of the things you picked out! I can't stomach how busy it is on the weekends so I only visit when I can steal away for a long lunch during the week. Oof - you are also reminding me that I haven't been to Schachinger in ages - thank you! The only one you "missed" from my list are Radspieler (fab interior products in a gorgeous old Altbau) and Kustermann (great for kitchen gear and the little cake cafe inside is a hidden gem - sooooooo good and the owners are so sweet!)
Rajiv, I so wish you'd been my shopping tour guide!! I LOVE the woolen felt store, the Manufacturm & especially the art store that carries Schminche!! I once had an art store inNaples, FL (now closed) that carried Schmincke but cannot find in the city of Minneapolis!! I absolutely LOVE your travel videos because you always make me want to go back over the pond❤! Roxie ps...I'm a porcelain painter. Have you ever toured the Meissen manufactory in Dresden? That was part of my porcelain training❤, along with my mentor, Alfredo Todano!
Love that you started out with “Du Du Liegst Mir Im Herzen”! What lovely friends to store your bike. The town I used to live in Germany had an amazing item I discovered in a bakery. And there’s a cheese in Holland that hands down is the best I’ve ever tasted. It’s those surprises that can knock you off your feet! It warms my heart that you’ve found some treasures as well. Thank you for sharing! Now I’m going to try to order those wool socks!! 😂
Guten Tag, Hello Rajiv! It was a pleasure watching your video of München (Munich). Brought many happy memories back to me from the time years ago I spent there during a college term. One of my favorite things to eat was a dish called Jägerschnitzel . Another variant of the Munich and Vienna schnitzel.
I have lived in Munich since 2014 and a couple of years ago I moved to an apartment that is literally around the corner of Schachinger. The next time you’re there, I would recommend to pass by the newly opened bakery Julius Brantner - I‘m sure you’ll love their bread too as it fits right in with everything you do. Their sourdough is make with high quality ingredients and is made by hand in their bakery! Also, thank you for opening my eyes to some of the stores you showed. I didn’t know of the Eisenblätter hat store and will definitely check them out as well as those socks from schuster. Having grown up in kenya, I get so cold very winter even after all the years I have lived here. And I think I’ve shopped at literally very store except the hat store! 😅☺️
Thank you so much for sharing your favourite Munich stores. As a spinner/knitter, you could make your own woolen socks, AND, linen dish cloths (I do, very slowly, but great rewards).
You could just leave me in that art supply store... but I'll visit Astrid's hat store first! And maybe follow that with a meal of my fave - wiener schnitzel! And I might have to go to that household products store. Everything looks like such high quality. Yummm. I'd travel with you any day, Rajiv.
I was going to say 'You shipped your bike with you to Germany?' LOL, got a bike in every port! I could go nuts in that art store, thanks for the trip, I love all the wool and linen stuff, love specialty shops
Please try Darn Tough wool socks! They come in different thicknesses and tallnesses. There’s a lifetime warranty on them. Return them with a hole and you’ll get new socks for free!!! I worked at the Gerstaecker Harolds art supply store in Rotterdam when I attended the Willem de Kooning art academy and can still remember the smell of paint and paper.
If you visit my hometown next time: try RADSPIELER at Hackenstrasse. It`s one more of these beautiful traditional stores in Munich. They have the best classical room equipment, fabrics and tableware. And an absolut wonderful huge backyard with an historic fontain in the middle of the city.
Rajiv that Wiener schnitzel looks sooooooo goooood, I want some!!!! You’re a great guy to show us what you love in life, thank you, I enjoy it so much!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
You could visit Kremer pigments in Munich but also in NYC. I could see you learning to make your own watercolor and oil paints.i want to visit every place that you went and i want most of what you bought. Great video.
As a Munich citizen, I know most of these stores, but the hat store was new to me. Thanks for introducing. If I should ever run into you by chance, I will spend you a good coffee :-)
*buy you a coffee*
Was it you who quoted a friends grandmother when she said "We are too poor to buy cheap things.".
I took that to heart and when I watch your curated approach to life, I feel such relief. Thank you for this!
Yes, it was him, I remember the episode.😊❤
@@cvmitchell9368 Thank you!
It aggravates me so much when you give someone a truly quality item and they treat it like it is something that came from Walmart.
Buying quality is also an environmental decision. We have finite resources and cheap manufacturing from countries such as China not only are wasteful, they are polluting.
Rajiv, you are truly a citizen of the world. Thank you for these wonderful uplifting videos!
Rajiv is so handsome, like a painting. I love his vintage style.❤
It really renewed my old love for this beautiful city I live in
I adore Haidhausen ❤
Loved living in Haidhausen ❤
I live in Munich!! I was also an au pair in my first year here. Been here for 3 years now and never want to leave :) so fun to see this video
You are beloved and greatly appreciated, Rajiv. ❤
Beautiful, Rajiv! Here's one more tip for next time: Kremer Pigmente's Shop. They have a branch in NYC but their big shop is in MUC. They have materials for artists, conservators, and music instrument makers. Pigments, glues, brushes, all sorts of tools. Amazing!
I already recommended them and he knows Kremer. Of course! As an artist. 😉
I live in Milan and my fiance and I head up to Munich about twice a year when he has business trips in town (and I tag along). Adding these shops to our to-do list for our December trip!
Thank You for showing others that there still are shops that have quality items. I have things that last a lifetime if you take care of them.
I'm 71 and still use things that were used by my Viennese grandmother, then my mother. Enamel kitchenware, scales, bed linens, table linens, handkerchiefs, nightgowns. You tube has tutorials on darning
My grandmother used to darn all my father’s socks that she handmade. I used to be amazed when she finished darning them.
If the socks are being “retired,” they make great dusting mitts 😀
It is so odd how things surface when you know about them! I bought a Lodenfrey wool tweed jacket this week at a thrift shop for $7.99.

I need this escapism right now. Thank you.

My favorite ever!!! I love the stores. My grandmother was German. I am placing an order today. Thank you so much! 🫶🕊️
Nothing like a good pair of woolen socks for Winter! I get mine from the Dutch island of Terschelling and they too last me exactly one year 😊
I lived in Ingolstadt a few years ago and spent my fair share of days and even weeks in München. Thank you for a ray of sunshine. I need one. ❤
Oh, pure linen cloth. I have dozens of them from my grandma. I can‘t use it in my lifetime. Third generation. Imagine. And still impeccable.
Germany has never been on my travel list but after this video I'm definitely adding this city. And love the voice over 😍
Yes, more of this! You have been so inspiring to me, Rajiv. I am on a mission to replace (after they have been used up and recycled as much as possible) all of my plastic crap with well made and beautiful and useful things.

Omg I LOVE manufactum!!!! I always pop in there for a new tin of bookdarts, whenever I run out. Too good.
Sport Schuster is also, bizarrely, the only place where I can find socks that fit me and don't slip down while I am walking. They are merino wool, fit like a glove, are ridiculously expensive, but what can I do?!

I LOVE, "beautiful cleaning products!"
Delightful! What quality products! That even just a pair of socks or a scrub brush can bring a person joy. Thanks for the armchair travel! S.
If you visit my hometown next time: try RADSPIELER at Hackenstrasse. It`s one more of these beautiful traditional stores in Munich. They have the best classical room equipment, fabrics and tableware. And an absolut wonderful huge backyard with an historic fontain in the middle of the city.
I also love Manufactum since the 90ies....😍🤩😍
All so familiar! I also love Dallmayr, Leute at the Viktualienmarkt and Alva Morgaine in Glockenbach. Munich makes for some wonderful shopping!
You went at the best time of year! Its very busy there in April! Thanks for sharing.
Lived in Frankfurt in a boarding school in the 70s, loved it
