I’m in a similar situation. I planted a garden, in the Italian style, around our church. Of course the plants are stolen or vandalized quite frequently. However I can confidently say that the amount of trash dumped in that area is over 90% down from what it was before it was made into a flower garden. Way, way more people are respecting the beauty and taking pleasure in it , and that’s a beautiful thing
That's so lovely! Someone planted flowers+sunflowers in an area that used to be a dead flowerbed a year ago (where a lot of dogs would urinate and trash gathered) around the street corner where I live, and it added so much life to that space. Plenty of better places around that doggos are able to go and this summer the sunflowers thrived! I still think about the person who did that every time I walk by with my dog :)
My mouth was agape for a full thirty seconds after the update to the broken pot. I’m impressed that the man told you how the pot was broken. He could have very easily remained quiet. I’m even more impressed that he had the children apologize. An invaluable lesson for his children and for us all.
I’m so glad it wasn’t malicious And that the dad made them confess and apologize. I wish more parents realized making your children deal with their mistakes is what makes them adults able to function in the civil society. I like your attitude and I find your peaceful, persistence, lovely.
I was thinking the same; I'm glad it was an accident with a soccer ball and not smashed intentionally. Even better that the father and kids apologized for it.
I had a small business in the far east village on a very ugly block and I put window boxes outside and I pulled up a lot of the cement around the tree to enlarge the planting area and did a massive planting of seasonal flowers and had someone wrap that tree in pink fairy lights. Suddenly that ugly block was much nicer, and it made being in that space a joy. Thank you for creating Beauty where it is so desperately needed.
We did the same thing on a block in the North of Howard neighborhood in Roger’s Park, Chicago. We also held a Sunday morning pancake breakfast every week for the neighborhood kids who helped keep the street clean. Then we converted our backyard into a community gathering patio. All of the residents on our side of the street regularly used the space.
@@brooklynbabe3727 so you know how worthwhile it. Everyone waits for someone else to do it or they think because it’s a public space it will just get ruined. I had very little vandalism and tons of people stopped by to say thank you. I think every business should put a bench outside where anyone can sit and have flower boxes and cultivate/plant the tree pit in front of your building. The world can easily be a much prettier place with a little effort.
Great message. When I moved to my downtown home from the suburbs 25 years ago, I placed a pot of flowers by my stoop. No one else on the block had flowers, and the general sense was that they would get vandalized. I vowed that I wouldn't let vandals stop me from trying to make my neighborhood better. Turns out that over the years, the only vandalism has come from squirrels. Lots of my neighbors now have planters and window boxes. It looks great!

I had a guru once, who told us something very good that I always keep in mind. He related story about a beautiful and extensive set of rare crystals. He had sitting on his altar, and the wind came through and blew them over and smashed, and everyone thought he’d be very mad or upset. And he said the 4:16 crystals were for my pleasure not for my misery. It’s just the thing you’re happiness dependent on the crystals or the topiary they bring your pleasure not misery.
Rajiv: I put old dumbbells/barbells in the bottom of my pots on the porch if that helps you at all. Tropical storms are a reality where I am at, so I have had to get creative. Fun fact: Growing up I had 3 aunts named Myrtle, Mable, and Melva. 😊
I worked in retail and some kids made a mess, their father made them clean up and apologize. Which was a first in many years there. Makes you believe some people DO care. Thanks Rajiv!
I agree because think of all the days or years you would NOT have gotten any joy from those plants and beautiful pots on the stoop if you’d been afraid to put them out at all. Other examples: when you knit a sweater or crochet a beautiful white cotton tablecloth for someone, you tell them to wear it, to put it on their table because they are to USE, not put away in a drawer safely, unseen and unused. 😊
What an uplifting video. And thank goodness for a father showing his children how to own up and apologize for breaking the flower pot… manners and respect are important lessons in life. Yes, there is still Hope for humanity. Have a beautiful weekend Rajiv ❤❤❤

Happy to hear the pots were not vandalized and the father told you that his sons accidentally broke the pots and that they apologized. I must admit that I was surprised that the father did not offer to pay to replace the pots. I actually think that your own handmade replacement pots look even better than the originals. They look like similar to a white handmade clay pot that I have that I treasure.
