      I kinda liked this, with Illinois being as shut down as it is, along with the rest of the world. I also have way to much stuff that I dont want to throw away, because who knows I may use them. Though I know I never will, and should just throw them away.

      in an amusing coincidence, i recently came across 20 double sided 8cm DVD-Rs in jewel cases, and bought them because they look like some kind of 90s future technology. like minidiscs you can take out.

      I should go through my old optical disk. I literally have them sitting right next to me and haven't bothered going through them in years. I think they're mostly blanks which I'll keep around in case I want to update an old computer or make a backup copy of a DVD for a relative that still uses DVD's.

    As a Wisconsinite, I fully appreciate your advanced sense of, "That's a good X, I might need that someday." I have a box as we speak in the garage of random cables/cords that has moved with me no less than 4 times. Bravo sir! Pack rat with pride!

      My physics teacher gave out a bunch of his old junk one spring in high school, and I got two old camcorder bags from him, those are now my loose cord bags, and they are completely full, I have no idea where or why I got most of them now, but they're there, and useful.

      I have a big box with a bunch of cords, some loose cords in a chest, and a desk drawer also full of 'em. The desk drawer contains mostly HDMI and USB cables which I end up needing more frequently than you might think.

      I moved into this apartment 10 years ago, and I still have cardboard boxes mentally identified as "top of closet" and "desk shelves" even though they've been in the attic the whole time.

      Tbf those Disney VHS cases are really nice, you never see padding like that on most other cases. I'd just flip the label card and use it for any special tapes.

    I know, man. I'm the same way. I have so much stuff that I use, even if it's been superceded by something much newer or better in my house. Wires that go to different things I might use once every few months, storage media for stuff I have as projects, old notes written down on paper that I never got around to converting to .txt files... It reminds you of how much you have to do and why you shouldn't be procrastinating.

      It's really rare you come across an entire box/bin of stuff that should just be thrown away but hadn't been. It's always a bunch of stuff I kept for a reason, with maybe just a few things I don't want or need anymore.

    I wholeheartedly agree with Connections by James Burke. I end up watching all three series plus The Day The Universe Changed every 2 years or so. There is nothing quite like it in the history of television.

      For a very short period of time, they were popular for business cards. Some of them were even "clipped" into a semi-rectangular shape so they'd fit in business-card-holders.

    I had to laugh at "one tub". Oh, how I long for the days when I didn't have hundreds of tubs and three storage units.... The tubs of materials and electronics parts I keep in my room are all absolutely necessary.... honest! And yet I still had to buy a switch, a fuse holder and fuses on line to complete the latest project. Grrrr!

      I do the same.
      And I guarantee the next project or so that you do, you will find switches, fuse holders and fuses in there then.

    To answer your floppies question - vintage computer enthusiasts still use them. Recently I found myself blasting through a collection of blank floppies, creating new startup, diagnostic and driver disks. Old floppies degrade over time, so having spares around is immensely helpful. I know that there are ways around this, but still, they're not perfect.

    I know the feeling. I have a stack of VHS movies, vinyl tubing, glass bottles, and scrap electronics in a big old tote under my bed. Every once in a while I dig through the electronic scrap and haphazardly hook it up to alligator clips to see what happens

    I know what you're going through. I had about a 1.5" thick stack of the labels that came with blank floppies. Both 3.5 and 5.25. It took me years to finally throw them away. I still regret doing so but I don't know why. They were still perfectly good.
    Maybe I should have just mailed them to LGR.

    Hot tip (2 years later, ha) store functional things in broad categories so you can always find things without knowing exactly where they are. Nostalgia is hard, unless an item makes you feel litteral bodily happiness you don't need it and you'll never miss it.

      There was some half-amateur system to store digital data on VHS, too. Each cassette is worth of tens of GB of data which is not bad.

      @@sonyp180 Seems about right. I've remembered name for it in Russia: ArVid, short for Archive on Video. They manufactured ISA cards in 90s to connect VHS player to PC. They used pretty simple coding (two levels of brightness for 0 and 1) and Hamming error correction and they got 2,06 GB on a 180 min tape. This is probably not a limit, some more novel methods could store more, also they should take into account all the 'diseases' of VHS playback as crosstalks, unstable speed and so on, but it was small company, they couldn't do it in proper time, so it was replaced with conventional HDDs.
