I remember back in the late 80s / early 90s I’d borrow a friend’s dad’s garage door opener and we’d go around the neighborhood opening other people’s garages. That was fun. We’d also take those old analog cordless phones and ride around on bikes interrupting people’s phone calls, since the same brands often used the same frequencies.
God technology was (even more) so insecure back then. Still insecure, but MORE insecure then. But I never heard of anyone robbing anyone’s house using their garage door opener in the area I lived in. Crime wasn’t high enough there I guess.

On keeping the Garmin, my 2017 Chevy Traverse has GPS, but as of today, no way to update the maps. Some other Chevy vehicles are listed with map updates but they are $$. My 4 yo Garmin on the other hand has life time maps which I update every quarter for free. I can see a point in the not too distant future when I'll be going back to using the Garmin for routing as it's maps are more up-to-date.
ETA: The built in navigation screen is very hard to see while driving. I can put the Garmin in a better position to see the upcoming route.

The most fun way to dispose of old CDs and DVDs is to take the top off of an ultra slim drive and put them in upside down, then connect them to a computer where they will spin at high speed while it tries to identify the disc. Then you can hold a sharpie or knife or something to them. My only optical drive is modified in this way and I use it to destroy discs. The drive is still functional

That Radio Shack battery reminds me, I have a very old Sharp calculator, my brother used it in technical school, later I used it in highschool and college. The back is not screwed on so I can move the battries, roll them to make good contact to work better. And one day I stopped and looked at the battery. It was still the original Sharp battery from factory, this calculator was made in 1992 I believe and it was still working! And both my brother and I got a good use out of them. A calculator probably doesn't consume much but still, almost 30 years and it's still going! I eventually took out the batteries because I don't want them to leak, I don't know if they can leak, but better safe than sorry, I really like that calculator and I don't want to ruin it.

My dad refuses to let his Garmin go, even though he puts his phone on a hands-free mount and will use Waze or Google Maps for directions. It also has Bluetooth pairing, so that helps it not be a total dinosaur, but I just think it's funny that in 2020 my dad still likes a dedicated GPS.
