Speaking of Sailor Moon, it was the original fan translation of Another Story on the SNES that got me into discovering fan translations and hacks (although I had dabbled in a couple of the earlier Sonic hacks). This led me into finding a lot of anime games that had been fan translated in recent years. The newer translation of it is a lot more accurate to the source material (though I do still appreciate the original efforts), and is definitely worth a look for Sailor Moon fans. I didn't need the easy mode hack on top, but I think casual RPG players would appreciate it. The Phantasy Star hacks are definitely worth a look at too. That said, for II/IV there are also hacks that do the reverse, and provide MORE challenge. Definitely worth checking out for subsequent playthroughs.
Absolutely right. 'Another Story' has also received another mod/ hack recently, upgrading music to CD quality. It brings a smile to my face that these classic video games are kept alive and upgraded by modders.
Those are an amazing collection of the hacks and translations :) But my jaws dropped on the floor at 17:36 when I saw Metal Slug port for Genesis! This has got to be the most ambitious project ever given it showed what the Neo-Geo was capable of. I am looking forward to that project.
some of these look really cool! definitely looking forward to genesis final fight that one's definitely looking to be a damn close arcade port, for sure!!
Really appreciate the recommendations in this one Sega Lord X. I've already downloaded, extracted and put several of these into my EverDrive X7. Looking forward to playing Golden Axe Plus, Shadow Dancer Hitpoint Edition and the MK hack of an already MK Arcade Edition hack. That patching utility app in your description is really useful! Was a bit lost when I got to patching the MK patch as it was in BPS and that utility app in your description fixed it. Thank you. Just out of curiousity, I wish someone would finish off that Shinobi hack for the Genesis/Mega Drive from a few years ago, I believe only a few levels were ever playable in the latest demo.
Great days for the good old Genesis! It's amazing how much the love of enthusiasts with great patience and very capable programming skills, can put those big companies releasing the games for these systems back in the day, to shame!
I only have the Playstation 1 Lord Monarch, but it's one of the many, many entries in the absurdly branching Dragon Slayer series (I believe the Lord Monarch games are part VI, after Sorcerian). I picked it up because there was a point in time that I was snagging up all things Falcom/Dragon Slayer that I could get my hands on. Lord Monarch was always one of the more obtuse games, so it'll be neat to try it in a language I can fully understand!
Magical Hat's Turbo Flying Adventure reminds me of Kid Kool on NES in multiple ways including how you can jump on enemies to gradually bury them in the ground and picking up a buddy item to throw at enemies. Only this game controls waaaaay better and you can slowly descend for long jumps like in Mario 3 with the racoon suit.
always liked the dark fantasy tone of Chakan, but with no surprise always felt repelled by the rough gameplay wich incrase the difficulty to frustrating levels. glad to see someone fix the issues. gonna try it.
The MK arcade edition is pretty incredible, and the ultimate looks amazing as well! It would be awesome if someone re-skinned SOR 2-3 into revenge of death adder or avp!
Thanks for show casing these. I have to check these out. I have Play some nes and snes. Don't know why I didn't think to check them out on this system too.

I'm not gonna be in a majority here, but boy do I love 'Sailor Moon' beat'em-ups. Growing up watching the anime and having played Golden Axe and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs in the arcade there would be nothing I would dream of more than this game. Having discovered it's now one of the classics me and my friend often casually play through together. It might not be much more than a fairly standard beat-em in Sailor Moon universe, but then again, growing up as a Moonie that's all you'd ever want anyway. While SNES port is an obvious choice for coop due to 2-player mode, Mega Drive port ouclasses it in most every other department, with much better graphics and inclusion of cutscenes, so I would say it's definitive for single player. Either way, it's really cool to see even those more niche titles receive some care from modding community.
For those with a Mega SD, there's a MD+ patch for MK1 that adds the arcade music. The patch also works with MK1 Arcade Edition hack, so you can get a MK1 that looks a lot like the arcade and sounds exactly like the arcade. I compared it to the Sega CD MK1 port and the Arcade Edition hack with MD+ arcade audio is definitely the better experience. Unfortunately, I think it only works with the Mega SD. There may be a Mega Everdrive Pro CD audio patch too, but I don't think it works on emulators.
Fire up your emulators and flash carts, some excellent mods to some great games. :D Chakan:The Good Edition finally, did you just compared Chakan to Greendog? :P ^_^ Not that I disliked MK on Genesis but very nice to see them get finesses not possible under the original tight time schedules, yeah would love to see arcade life bars in MK1 too. ;) We are all quite privileged to get so many Sega related English translations, more localizers or better tools idk why so many lately. :D I think that is a great project, FF on Genesis, I think that's been on the mind of anyone that played Genesis but didn't take the SCD plunge. Really loving these new takes or retakes on arcade translation for GEN/MD and Amiga lately, so many great games each platform could do so well if given the chance.
Personally, I want to see Panorama cotton turned into Panzer Dragoon. That Final Fight project though, wow! With today's advanced programming, I can only imagine arcade perfect super scaler on Genesis.Outrunners, perhaps?
Good stuff here. I've been playing with some hacks recently too. The hacking scene produced some cool stuff. I'm on my second run of Final Fantasy 1 on the NES with some bug fixes. That has led me to look into hacks for the early Dragon Quest games as well as the Phantasy Star games. I already played PS4 a bunch of times, but hacks might make the earlier games more fun. I was surprised how much I enjoyed Decap Attack when I played it about nine years ago for the first time, and Magical Hat always appealed to me visually, so I definitely need to give that a try. Chakan sounds like it may have some potential now, so I'll strongly consider that one. While I've played Shadow Dancer to death, and will continue to play it, a 3HP hack makes a lot of sense to make the game more accessible without killing the balance. Three hits is fair for those starting out. Though I should say the game is already rather fair and it's not too hard to deal with it the normal way so I do recommend working up to one-hit deaths and even raising the difficulty. Either way, I like the idea of that hack. Final Fight running on a Genesis is cool to see, though I'm not surprised by it. When I played the Sega CD one, I could see a good bit of minor sprite flicker, telling me that the game pushes the horizontal sprite limit, which I believe is the same for the base system, so that shouldn't be an issue. It's possible the Genesis may have some slowdown in spots due to the slower CPU compared to the Sega CD, but then there might be room to optimize it better. I do look forward to seeing how it turns out.
I have that Sailor Moon Mega Drive game on an original Japanese cart, and it's a shame it's only one player. It plays much more crisply than its Super Famicom counterpart, which is all kinds of sluggish. If it had the 2 player option it would be the clear cut better game. I have an original Psy-O-Blade as well, as it had super cool cover art, but have never made it far into it since I don't read the language. It'd be neat to give it a whirl in English!
Pigsy's Sega Genesis port of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night would be worth a feature. I don't think it's been covered yet! Unless I've forgotten :)
Also mortal kombat revelation. They did a good job recreating arcade like goros lair and make over of pit 1. Sprite colors and framerates on MK1 and MK2 characters looks way better than ultimate trilogy.
I wish mk aracade hack had enough space to add the flashing fight and finish him, arcade or amiga life bar, color sprite hack from MK revelations and goros lair where it is easier to update it to arcade like backgrounds. Maybe a 8 MB rom hack will fit everything. I'll love to MSU-MD and MD+ version of shadow dancer and Chakan for both hacks. Also check out tech demos and sprite/scrolling test with master Linkuei and genesis 8:14. More hacks from hacks games longplay channel. Also, check out mortal revalations which is hacked version of ultimate trilogy. It was better framerates and graphics mk1, mk2 characters and arenas.
Wait a minute? Towards the end of the Video that was Ermac, but it says Scorpion…on my MK Arcade Edition it says Ermac on the life bar…guessing there are different versions out there?
There must be a lot of work going into these. If somebody can port a game, perhaps somebody can fix the sound engine in both Altered Beast and Golden Axe so samples don't pause playback. Add a few extra effects like simulated sprite scaling, basically anything now that the 4Mbit cart size isn't the limiting factor, and the results should be even closer to the arcade originals (the soundtracks already were, aside of Altered Beast's difference in key and the loss of one or two instruments).
It always annoyed me how the names weren't in the life bars on the Genesis version of Mortal Kombat. Then they fixed it on the rest of the releases, but the SNES took the names out of the life bar.
Glad you liked Ultimate Chakan! I had fun working on it. I hope to work on some more mediocre to bad games once myself and the team are done with Ghostbusters. :)

I have an original Psy-O-Blade as well, as it had super cool cover art, but have never made it far into it since I don't read the language. It'd be neat to give it a whirl in English!
I would like to see, a hack of Battletoads in Battlemaniacs.
extremely good video
so dope
Great work Sir thank you
Pigsy's Sega Genesis port of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night would be worth a feature. I don't think it's been covered yet! Unless I've forgotten :)
Love your content sir 💪
They released more games for the Sega genesis/mega drive 2 I know you’ll be releasing that video soon enough thanks Sega Lord X
I wish the SNES Mortal Kombat game would get some ROM hacking love. I'd like to finally see blood and fatalities in the best looking home port of MK1
I'm surprised Joe isn't here questioning you for saying Greendog needs an improvement patch! Everyone knows the game is peak Genesis!
Imagine the ROM hacks that will be available 30 years from now for games like Elden ring
Do you happen to know if any of the Phantasy Star Gaiden games have been translated?
yes, all of them have been translated.
Great video
These developers kick ass.
Yes i do own 2 of them. Mortal Kombat Arcade edition, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat trilogy. Both a worthy purchase.
Also mortal kombat revelation. They did a good job recreating arcade like goros lair and make over of pit 1. Sprite colors and framerates on MK1 and MK2 characters looks way better than ultimate trilogy.
@@maroon9273 id like to give that one a try. Does it have Hydra in it?
@@dad7275 yes sir
@@maroon9273 nice. I might see about purchasing. Thanks.😁👍
I LOVE SEGA👍✨
Towards the end of the Video that was Ermac, but it says Scorpion…on my MK Arcade Edition it says Ermac on the life bar…guessing there are different versions out there?
so in golden axe does whipping bad guys with your mounted monster do more damage than your regular hit?
🤘😜🤘.I HAVE THE POWER
Turtle power?
