It's not the continuation we deserve nor, for some, paid for. Suzuki had a real chance to make shenmue reborn in the modern day and he blew it. If he did it right, he could have been set for the next 2 or 3 games (he planned on it being 16 parts. Part 1 was shenmue 1, part 2 was a manga, part 3-6 was shenmue 2, no word on how many parts 3 took up) There is a reason shenmue has 3 games in 20 years and yakuza has seven mainline entries, one spin off game (judgement), two full on modern remakes of the PS2 games (kiwami) and two side games in 14 years. Mainly because yakuza is actually well written with great stories and characters with each chapter being primarily self contained (but highly advised you play in sequence). Then it's also fun too.
@@MagiofAsura Yea, I've heard a few others who also were disappointed. I'm surprised to hear it was such an ambitious project. I do own a few of the Yakuza games, but so far my backlog of games have hindered me from getting to play them.

This is probably the most honest and best review I've seen to date. Soo many other reviewers are like this game is rubbish, voice acting is terrible, graphics are 20 years old and gameplay mechanics suck! Whereas Shenmue fans are like yeah, so? This is like a nostalgia trip to the max and is like a HD remaster of the game we SHOULD have got nearly 20 years ago, dated mechanics, voice acting and all. Most people that hate it, was never a fan of it to begin with and always did hate it (probably would hate the first 2 aswell). Or never played the others during its Golden Age and as such why are they even playing the third anyway? This game isn't for newcomers, it's for the fans, always was.

It was great going back to this review good work very fair. I’m 47 (Yeah, I’m old) and I’ve gaming since the Atari 3600 came out! There were 2 titles that changed the way I viewed gaming, Shenmue and Vice City. I’m writing this because tomorrow Rockstar are releasing a remaster of Vice City. So not only did I finally get to play the continuation of the Shenmue saga almost 20 years later but I can also play the the game that revolutionised open worlds imho updated on my PS5. I’ve become rather disheartened with some modern title so I’m hoping that this will remind me why I loved gaming so much the first place…..Again, great review
I played the 2nd on Xbox then got a Dreamcast and bought the 1st way back in like 2000. Had a huge backlog when I got 3 so it seemed like a waste of time. Finally making time for it and it's got the same "bad kung fu movie" voice acting and cheesy story....I feel like that's kinda what they've been going for and it is an amazing game down that line of thought
Except the old technic. The game is very cool. Much better then Death stranding. I'm looking forward to play to shenmue 4. I'll buy another one as a present for a friend. He will love it.
I love the game so much. From the first time shenmue 1 and 2 on the dreamcast. I was in love Obess with the game. It was always in my heart my soul. I so happy after 18 years there is part 3. Now we waiting on shenmue 4 And the style i still love it. Just old skool
@@1georgekitchen I didn't say feeding your character is a modern invention. It just so happens that it is the modern trend. Breath of the Wild. Red Dead Redemption 2. Try again dude.
As someone that played Shenmue 1 & 2 the days or their original release, who also absolutely loved them and have very fond memories of. I've kinda decided not to play this 3rd one. Im just worried its going to ruin my great memories of playing the first two, especially since it just ends on a lame cliffhanger again
I contest the claim that modern games had advanced at all besides the graphics. Even in Destiny 2 which released 2017, you still get your feet caught on small obstructions like a 1 x1 rock, instead of simply parkouring over it. Assassin's Creed had parkour, but 99 % of modern games ignore it and leave it out.
there are 2 things that keep coming up in reviews: 1) the bad voice acting. Guys - theres a japanese voice option, its authentic and really good. 2) the first point but again. But seriously i cannot see why anyone who hasn't played 1 and 2 would remotely want to play this. So why should it cater to them in the slightest?
Exactly! They all talk about the voice acting and how bad it is, like there's no Japanese option. The Japanese option is great and the way to go. I'm playing it Japanese on PC and then will play it in English on PS4.
7/10 is a perfect score for this. Even Yu Suzuki said he would give it a 7! Still, Shenmue 3 isn't a bad game and I would rather play it than most modern AAA games
I think shenmue should evolve and adapt even simple modern ingredient. As a vet shemue gamer, i feel this is quite tedious. Camera control, Ui design, menu design still looks and feel the same. Appreciate the developer try hard on getting fans to feel cozy. But there's nothing wrong if they improve the game system.
The clunky gameplay in Shenmue 1-2 was acceptable because of the absurdly high production values. This game has even more clunky gameplay and low production values. It feels like Shenmue, but watered-down. What's worse, the story barely moves an inch and that is absurd after 18 years. 6/10.
The only thing I really didn't like about this game is the new combat system ... I hope if a shenmue 4 comes out they will bring the 1st and 2nd combat back, it was one of the best things in shenmue for me.
IGN gave this game a 5.9 because it is not modern it is a return to form because it was known for the stiff acting and wonky gameplay and I loved it fans would hate if the game was different don't ruin it
IGN should have judged this to small budget indy games, when has an Indy game used the latest techniques? Most are stylised 2d affairs. What Indy studio has the latest mo-capped and facial capture animation rigs? This is exactly what the fans wanted and expected from the budget raised by themselves. If this was billed and back by Sega then I would've agreed with average scores but not in this situation. This is a rare thing in gaming.
why did he praise mankind divided as a great sequel like god of war? wasnt that game really bad since it has too many microtransactions or something? and went on deep sale after just a few months or something?
Deux Ex: Mankind Divided barely felt like an improvement over Human Revolution, which already felt really archaic even back in 2011. And God of War 2018 is not a modernization/improvement of the older games, it's just very different from what it used to be.
Kinda.. Its the experience lol.. Tough to explain... Down time in between objectives/ Freedom to do what ya want and continue the path when you want/ atmospheric/ well written story/character development ect.. I can go on trust me.. Its a acquired taste that in this day and age many wont enjoy.. However there are Many folks who will enjoy every bit of it.. Even its Flaws.. Many of those flaws comes off as if their that way on purpose if your familiar with the series lol..
I don't know why people using English voiceover with English subs and complaining about poor voice acting or facial expressions. Just play Japanese with subs. Shenmue 3 can't be amazing for Shenmue fans. I used to have dreamcast long ago and i can say with confidence, Shenmue 3 is total garbage. Minigames, music, fighting - all that just horrible. Much better idea - to play shenmue 1&2 again.

I was in love
Obess with the game.
It was always in my heart my soul.
I so happy after 18 years there is part 3.
Now we waiting on shenmue 4
And the style i still love it. Just old skool
Damn straight. This is it.
>"Shenmue is a game that refuses to bend to the will of modern expectations"
>Requires your character to eat
>Phil trying to be a smartass.
>Thinks feeding your character is a modern gaming invention.
I remember feeding my characters in AD&D, 80's PC games..
Thanks to best buy early online deal I only pay 37 dollars for shenmue 3
And a steel case too
Yes this is for loyal fan. I personally don't play Shenmue but seeing it doesn't really like it.
I wanna see nozomi
there is a picture in your inventory 😁
Get a long distance card and call her.
Is it better than Yakuza or Sleeping Dogs?
In short, no. But it definitely shows that it is in the same vein because shenmue is the original version of those types of games.
I contest the claim that modern games had advanced at all besides the graphics. Even in Destiny 2 which released 2017, you still get your feet caught on small obstructions like a 1 x1 rock, instead of simply parkouring over it. Assassin's Creed had parkour, but 99 % of modern games ignore it and leave it out.
there are 2 things that keep coming up in reviews:
1) the bad voice acting.
Glitch @2:24
Shenmue 3 has performed “fine” financially but has proved to be a “a core niche product”, according to the parent company of publisher Deep Silver.
Is that thug the guy that does reggies voice from bleach? He even has similar eyebrows.
"Im looking for sailors"
7/10 is a perfect score for this. Even Yu Suzuki said he would give it a 7!
Still, Shenmue 3 isn't a bad game and I would rather play it than most modern AAA games
I think shenmue should evolve and adapt even simple modern ingredient. As a vet shemue gamer, i feel this is quite tedious. Camera control, Ui design, menu design still looks and feel the same. Appreciate the developer try hard on getting fans to feel cozy. But there's nothing wrong if they improve the game system.
I'd rather have Shenmue 3 than Death Standing!
At least this walking simulator has a good plot and fun gameplay!
True and you can gamble lol
@@Silenthilldude87 Flower, Bird, Wind and Moon all day!
Excellent review because it is balanced. Good job!
An open minded and fair review. Acceptable.
Well... Is the story finished?
Nope!
Where are the IGN and Gamespot video reviews?
Whaaat's grooooovin' broooo?
Did this guy just get the main character of the shenmue games wrong? It's Ryo not Ryu
Naw man its Dyo!
@@Yinzermakesvids Dio... za warudo.
All the characters when they address him it sounds like Ryu
@@clydebarksdale2264 I hear mostly Dyo or Dio instead of Ryo
I think I was just trying to say it closer to how the characters in the game say it. I realize it's spelled Ryo.
Bro you only showed footage for Bailu. Did you even play this game? It sounds like you just turned on the game and took a look and turned it off
To avoid spoilers he said
Good review, though I'm not sure it's fair to compare a budget title with maybe $10 million to work with with a AAA title like God of War.
I only compared them to demonstrate the difference in approach. I didn't hold shenmue 3 to the standard of God of war.
I can finally avenge my father!?
Unfortunately no, they should have concluded this series by they chose not to. Is it going to be another 18 years of waiting for Shenmue 4?
@@Phantom-1992 😔 but... I only have so much time
If they can't make shenmue 4 they should make a manga and release the entire story. Some of us getting old
IGN gave this game a 5.9 because it is not modern it is a return to form because it was known for the stiff acting and wonky gameplay and I loved it fans would hate if the game was different don't ruin it
IGN should have judged this to small budget indy games, when has an Indy game used the latest techniques? Most are stylised 2d affairs. What Indy studio has the latest mo-capped and facial capture animation rigs? This is exactly what the fans wanted and expected from the budget raised by themselves.
If this was billed and back by Sega then I would've agreed with average scores but not in this situation. This is a rare thing in gaming.
I'd care if this was 15 years ago
Worthy continuation of the story? Are you serious? There is hardly any major plot developments in the whole game.
Shenmue is great its great they haven't changed it. Anyway if they did change people would be moaning about that to
Nobody's moaning here.
I see
Rose is the villain and Gamefreak lie to you guys about about make new animations in pokemon sword and shield. Hope you guys enjoy the game.
why did he praise mankind divided as a great sequel like god of war? wasnt that game really bad since it has too many microtransactions or something? and went on deep sale after just a few months or something?
It reviewed well and fans liked it. It just didn't sell very well.
whens onimusha trilogy remaster ?!
For me and and for only 8-10 million financial note 9 of 10
he looks like Guerrero 20 sec
No way would I pay 60 bucks for a game that looks this bad. It looks like it was 5 gens ago.
You love exaggeration, do you? Even PS360 hardware would struggle in scale alone due to memory limitations. Kids these days, no eye for reality
@@Ashitaka0815 cool story boomer
@@rurig3608 thanks, I appreciate it
Looks horrible
The game is supposed to be how it is that's shenmue
It's Cool, that it even... exists.
Now only if we could get a "Gray Fox Cyber-Ninja"...Game !!!
@Sir Galahad Yeah Rising was fun...
What a great review! A game for the fans of shenmue
Got a new copy on mercari for 35 bucks I'm stoked
Should be there in a few days
Hope they decide to bring it to Xbox in the future
Keep waiting loser
A game for old school gamers
jesus the facial animations are so so bad
i hope shenmue 3 is a success, so shenmue 4 can be an actually good game.
No wonder he used kickstarter.
Ehh its an okay game. Would've been better received if it was made 15 years ago at least.
Deux Ex: Mankind Divided barely felt like an improvement over Human Revolution, which already felt really archaic even back in 2011. And God of War 2018 is not a modernization/improvement of the older games, it's just very different from what it used to be.
Maybe their faces are that way because they're just too tired?
🤦🏻♂️
Stay blessed team gamingbolt 🙏
Why would you keep the old shitty voice acting for just for nostalgias sake? Bring it into the 21st century
Is it any less boring than the first 2 games?
"if you like a more modern aproach you are better of playing god of war or deus ex" :D sure there arent games that fit the bill more? like yakuza
God of war and deus ex are good examples of old franchises that have been modernized. That's the point.
I'm guessing the story is the main attraction here.
GoodolOzzy story that doesn’t concludes and ends in the same cliffhanger from 18 years ago.
Many of those flaws comes off as if their that way on purpose if your familiar with the series lol..
why not use the Dragon engine? I was highly pissed at Shenmue 3s combat
