My first landings on an Airbus A320

  • We did landing training on the D-ABNY (A320) in Rostock-Laage (ETNL/RLG), Germany. After 6 touch and goes we were released for the line flights. This base training is necessary after the typerating on the simulator. The traffic patterns where all flown by hand. No autopilot during training.
    We had a great time on the aircraft. It was a lot of fun, flying that amazing plane in real for the first time!

      Airbus A320 is FBW. There isn't much to do there to be honest. Once you set the attitude and the speed it pretty much does all the compensations by itself. :-)

    Base training is always exciting, as I heard :) It's the first real aircraft after the sim, it is somewhat (or a lot) different than the sim, and there is always a chance for something not going as planned, such as rough landings. I heard it from a pilot who was participating in these on the jumpseat for safety reasons (just in case the captain becomes incapacitated).

    • @Doggepe
      @Doggepe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I thought the 737 was very close to the sim, rough landings are felt for sure in the sim as well, but of course a difference when it's actually real life haha

    • @OmnipotentEnt
      @OmnipotentEnt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@Doggepe I think the psychological factor of "oh wow, I'm in control of the real thing now" comes into play too! As far as developing muscle and spatial memory of the cockpit, VR sims and level D are the way to go. Feels exactly the same as sitting in the real thing. Speaking from a 737 perspective as well :)

    • @rnzoli
      @rnzoli 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Such a cool video! I have no intent to become a professional pilot but I did try out an A320 full motion sim and can recommend that to everyone who enjoys this stuff!
    And, funnily enough, compared to my landings on the PC, it was rather easy to control and land. The connection to the aircraft is much better. I can only imagine how much better the actual plane must feel, real dream come true for you!

      The benefit on the real aircraft (or also in a full-motion sim) is, that you can feel the aircraft. When preparing for takeoff or landing, I always tighten the fasten seatbelts to get a good connection to aircraft’s motion. Feeling the aircraft is very important!

You are always focused which is even more difficult when the AP does the job. You are always aware of your position and where to land in case of emergency or major system failures. This is the hard part. The fun begins with troubleshooting midair or in dynamic situations like TO and landing...In fact you cant just pull to the right and stop the bus to look whats the problem and every PAX is safe. You have to solve problems with your FO or FC while the plane shoots through the air with 800kph+.

    Love this video. Been trying to learn and perfect Landings on the Airbus on FSX, so watching you do Touch & Go's was really helpful. Was the Autothrust used after initial take-off or was it all 'manually' controlled? And was the Autopilot used at any stage or was it purely 'hand-flown'?

    • @TobiasLauner
      @TobiasLauner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Hi Simon, the autothrust kicks in when setting TOGA at takeoff and was used until touchdown. The autopilot was not engaged the whole time. Manual thrust flying is a procedure I learned later on the line. Manual flying only was the goal of that training. Nowadays I fly Autopilot/Autothrust OFF on most landings.

    Guten Abend, Ich habe eine Frage um Video, bzw. zu den Verfahren beim Touch-and-Go. Beim normalen Take-Off ist die Entscheidungsgeschwindigkeit festgelegt bis zu der ein sicherer Startabbruch erfolgen kann. In Ihrem Video ist zu sehen dass bei Ihrem fünften Anflug der Start aufgrund einer Master-Caution-Meldung abgebrochen wird. Wie sind die Regeln im Falle eines Touch-and-Go-Manövers? Eine Entscheidungsgeschwindigkeit kann es nicht geben, gibt es einen fixen Punkt auf der Runway, gibt es eine Zeit nach dem Touchdown bis zu dem über den erneuten Start bzw. den Abbruch entschieden wurden sein muss? Das würde mich interessieren. Danke und schönen Gruß, Daniel

      @TobiasLauner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hallo Daniel,
      freut mich, dass dir das Video gefallen hat und Du dich so für die Luftfahrt interessierst.
      ja, da hast du vollkommen recht!
      Bei einem normalen Start wird die Entscheidungsgeschwindigkeit genau ausgerechnet. die so genannte V1 ist genau der Punkt, wo wir vor dem erreichen der Geschwindigkeit einen Start sicher auf der Landebahn abbrechen können. Beim Touch and Go gibt es diese Geschwindigkeit nicht. Hier liegt es tatsächlich einzig und allein im Ermessen des Piloten, ob die Bahn für einen Abbruch ausreicht. Da die Landebahn lang genug ist in Rostock, hatte der Trainer (Kapitän) die Entscheidung selbst getroffen, hier den Start abzubrechen.
      Ich hoffe, ich konnte dir deine Frage somit beantworten.
      Liebe Grüße,
      Tobias

      That‘s correct. Spoilers were disarmed. So the Captain retrimed the aircraft. Meanwhile, I set 50% thrust to stabilize the engines, as you do it on every takeoff and kept aircraft on centerline. When all flaps travelled to 1+F, trim was set correct and engines were stabilized, I got the call to set TOGA again.

    • @lbowsk
      @lbowsk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Floyd. B There is almost zero spool time on the engines on an A320. The only reason to delay is to get the flaps up and the trim reset. The plane is already hauling ass and needs very little power to get to takeoff speeds.

    Great video....why was there a Dual input warning at 18:16? .......Did the instructor accidentally apply some force on his side stick due to their sensitivity, or did he do it deliberately? I know he is supposed to give a verbal 'I have control' request which i never heard, so am assuming he subconsciously did something as you touched down. Out of interest, in the event of a crazy suicidal pilot (thankfully almost non existent!) trying to deliberately crash the aircraft, who has the ultimate control in a A320? Does the aircraft computer give it to the captain. Anyway subscribed, these first landings were just 10 out of 10.

  • @megathumper777
    @megathumper777 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi, great video and thanks for sharing.
    Two questions if you don’t mind
    1) why were you always approximately 20-30ft over threshold on every approach, is that a base training technique?
    2) why did the instructor make dual inputs rather than taking over ? Not that I saw anything wrong with your flares, did he say why?
    Please don’t take my questions as a criticism, I’m just curious
    Thanks

    • @TobiasLauner
      @TobiasLauner  ปีที่แล้ว

      1) To be honest… Haven’t realized the height over threshold. We tried to touchdown quite firmly, because we had to reconfigure the aircraft for takeoff again during the role.
      2) The thing is, that you don’t feel the inputs on the other stick. So the trainer might give a short input before he realizes, that I did the same. Absolutely ok, instead of taking over the control. I know, that some others see it differently here 😉
