Any DC Adapter 2.7Amps or greater (MUST BE 12V) will work. Be careful using a soldering iron as the hot (12V) DC pin is close too others. You will want to solder to pin 10, it is marked clearly. The ground is the easiest to solder too and is farthest to the right and I would save it to do last. If you are concerned with taking the sticker off, use anything plastic (Do not use metal it scratches easier) like a guitar pick, and an eraser to get it completely off. There are other common household supplies to take the sticky residue off as well. There are two types of screws that you will need to take off. A regular torx T10, and a torx security T10. good luck with that, it works really well once its all synced in, but it takes huge amounts of usb bandwidth when running 4 ps4 cams and the V2 kinetic. The only issue I find is movement relationship between what it sees and what the PS Move Cam's see. They work slightly differently in movement scale so they take some dialling in to get working together
Thanks! I think my main goal with it will be to get just head tracking. I know it won't be my daily driver, but I just want to see if we can get something up and running. :)
I couldnt tell whether it was a bandwidth issue or signal interference but I use WMR. The controllers use a usb bluetooth dongle. Between it all... I experience massive slowdowns and the bluetooth controllers occasionally drop when I have the kinect plugged in. I got a regular xbox 360 kinect. I am hoping the fact that it uses less bandwidth will help but I was wondering if there was any way the mod could be causing interference. Additionally: the usb is plugged into a usb 2.0 whereas both the WMR headset and the bluetooth controllers use usb 3.0. Intuitively I would assume since they are different interfaces they could NOT interfere with one another. Would this assumption be correct?
THANK YOU! No other video could tell me what kind of power supply I needed, I have the kinect adapter brick already and a USB 3.0 type B cable, just needed a power supply, all together $20 and I didnt have to take apart the kinect so I think its worth it, plus $20 for the kinect itself, so $40 total, man there better be some good Kinect games worth playing at least...
Hello, I followed all the steps. Only when I connect the kinect to the pc via the USB port it connects and disconnects without stopping. Also it is displayed as unknown device. Can you help me please
Sounds like a non compatible USB controller. These really prefer to be connected to an intel controller or Renesas. Ones like Etron/ASMedia/etc are you supported.
Bought the usb cable and a 3A 12V power supply. The connect has worked for a couple weeks. However, now it powers on with the Xbox for about 1 min and then turns off. It seems to try to come back on a couple times but only displays red lights on the front. If I unplug it for about 30 minutes then plug it back in it works again but the same issue happens. Is it possibly overheating?
Be careful to pull out the usb cable straight out. It looks like it's on an angle but it's not. I broke my usb port trying to pull the cable out. I wasn't able to fix the port so this unit is scrap.
Like this one: www.ebay.com/itm/USB-3-0-A-Male-To-B-Male-A-B-M-M-Cable-Adapter-Printer-Scanner-Cord-Wire-15FT/401112083087?hash=item5d6424aa8f:g:4AIAAOSw2GlXIGYh
Yep - you'd have to either splice (if you want to retain the original or wire the other wires onto a usb 3 connector. I think the soldering power on is cleaner.
I was thinking the same thing. Seems the problem here is there is no 12V/3A going into the Kinect to power it on. So why not isolate the 12V/3A wires on the original cable and supply it power? Here is a picture of the original cable opened and showing all the wires(i42.tinypic.com/2h5qqs8.jpg). Please use Internet Explorer to open the link (doesen't open correctly in Chrome, not sure about other browsers). According to this you need to attach the power supply to brown and grey wires: Brown wire: 12V Gray: GND for 12V Red: 5V Black: GND for 5V (USB GND) Doing this will keep you from having to open up the Kinect. You would only need to buy the power supply since you would be using the original Kinect cable. @dbeasley1980, have u tried splicing and did it work?
DO NOT PULL THE CABLE OUT, IT IS NOT GLUED AT ALL. When the Kinect is disassembled it's only 2 extra screws to remove the plastic cover from the fan and you will be able to disconnect the cable without any force with the added bonus of being able to remove all the dust stuck behind the fan. Since the Kinect are know for thermal issues you should do it anyway.
Thanks for the tutorial , got my system up and running. A tip if this helps anyone else out . If you put everything together and it doesn’t cut on .check to see if you have to much lead flux on the wires . The case may ground it out . Thanks again
interesting... I think I might need to get my hands on a kinect. I always thought it was kind of worthless until watching this video. Can't wait to see what you end up doing with it. The beard is looking hardcore as ever, keep up the good work.
Yeah, I'm very curious to see what sort of stuff you can do with it. There is plenty out there, so I just hope I find a few things that are super cool.
Wow what kind of wire strippers are those? I'm too scared to wire anything to do with power for fear of burning my house down, but I really like how you stripped that wire! ;)
Damn dude you literally just saved me 50$ cuz I was about to buy the adapter but f*ck that I'll just adapt a 12v plug and use a USB cable... Thats amazing man seriously!
As of right now you might as well buy the adapter off of amazon for $27, because you would have to order the $10 usb 3.0 adapter off amazon anyway (the one used for printers doesn’t work and you can’t find the 3.0 version in stores)

Also enable all the voice commands in the xbox settings so you can use cortona to turn on xbox. Thanks!! I used the below items with no issues. Does it matter which pins you solder the ground and positive to? Not which pins, but which pin they each go on like you did. Could you do it opposite of what you did? If that makes sense lol
After numerous attempts to solder the wire on pin 10 the little protruding bit on pin 10 fell off. Tried soldering on what is left, succeeded but when I connect it to the computer nothing happens. There is current flowing between the wires, checked with an ampere-meter. Another way I checked is by connecting the wire to the pin manually with the power still on, it gave off a spark. When I did this the computer got a signal but it only said the USB was faulty. I was using a wrong type of cable (just the square USB 3 type). Got a proper USB 3 like in the video, tried it again and no computer prompt whatsoever. Retried with the former cable and still no prompt. Is the issue to do with pin 10? How would I go about in fixing it?
Help, I picked up a Xbox 360 at Goodwill but it doesn’t have a fan in the center of the back, and no special usb 3 plug with extra conn on top, but it does have a fixed cable with what looks like a usb 3 plug at the end. Can I use it to scan with, if so how? Thanks
I just did this mod. Do you think the 12v could have fried my PC? I plugged it in via usb3 and now my PC won't turn on. The Mobo light is flashing green. I'm afraid I motherboard or my PSU. :(
I give up trying, I've tried 3 different AC adapters of various power on 2 different cameras, re-soldered 2 times on each AC and tested to make sure power was flowing. Tested with a friends official cable and both cameras work. I give up, it's not going to work for me.
A question - if I run this mod for my Xbox one x will the Kinect always be on if the power supply is on or will the Xbox turn off the connect when the Xbox itself is turned off ?
Hi, thanks for your videos, i'm here to ask you what version of kinect is better for scanning, V1 or V2? i'm in doubt and i don't know what should i buy. Which of them is more accurate for scanning? Thanks
im getting 12v on my multimeter but nothing happens, i dont have the usb cable yet ive ordered it but can someone check what happens when they connect just power and not usb to their kinect. I was expecting fan spin or a light even if its not connected by usb or does it just need the extra 5v from usb to work? If someone does check thx a lot!
I'm not sure if the fan is always spinning or not, but if it's disconnecting and reconnecting over and over, that's normally cause it's connected to an incompatible USB controller. Try different USB ports, and make sure your power supply is big enough
How did you solve the USB controllers issue? I bought the XBOX ONE Kinect and the USB adapter, and installed the Kinect for Windows SDK but the Kinect won't function because of USB controller settings?
Could anyone help me? I did everything Just like the video. I used a 12v , 28W, 2.4A poder supply, but when I measure the power from the supply I get 13.65V. And then I plug the kinect in the xbox one s it does not work. Any idea ?
Do you have a lab bench power supply? If you do you can figure out the exact wattage it needs. Many lab bench power supplies will show you the amps being drawn from a device. From there you just use the power formula power in watts =(amps)(volts). Once you figure this info out it would be possible to build a custom power supply or buy one. I would do what your video suggests, but I am wondering if the kinect is still working. Did you over power it, or is it under powered?
It's being powered just fine by the power supply I'm using. I've heard of people having success as low as 2.4A. But going over it won't hurt at all since current is drawn and not pushed. I did use this quite a bit on my PC and it worked great.
Many thanks. I found out in the end, and the only one I have is about 50cm! I have found that tracking on the vive constantly cuts out when the kinect is running. Because this cable is so short, I can only have it about 1 meter away from one of the base stations and it's directly under it. Is there a better position which would help?
Sorry, I have never tested this out with a vive.. But since this uses USB 3.0 and your Vive uses USB 3.0, try putting the vive on a 2.0 port, or try to move USB ports. Not sure if it wil fix it, but may help or make worse. Worth a shot though.
Hi, Sorry for some reason just assumed you did this for the Vive. The issue is that the Vive base stations also use infrared lasers for positioning, and since the kinect also blasts the room with IR, it causes tracking issues (for myself at least).
Great video for this hack! Wondering if it might be easier to splice the cable and connect/solder the wires accordingly to a USB 3 plug cable using the many wiring diagrams on the web - in similar fashion to the Kinect 360 mod. Usually one would connect a USB cable and Kinect cable by: white to white / green to green / red to red... then connect the power supply red to the Kinect sensor cable brown wire and the power supply black to both the Kinect and USB cables black. Could one possibly use a 12v portable power supply like 8 AA batteries or 7.4v radio controlled car battery pack and fit in an output 12v regulator?
Currently using a 360 sensor bar powered by a 7.4v (3700mAh) radio controlled car battery... and it lasts hours. Last trial I used it continuously and after an initial charge 8.2v power the battery read 7.6v after 4 hours... Hoping to try this with the One Sensor bar soon...
You could splice but I would be careful to cut ONLY the power lines out of the cable (if that's possible). USB 3.0 has pretty high speeds and requires solid data integrity. Solder joints or twisted wires can mess with that. I've soldered usb 2.0 wires with moderate success, not so sure 3.0 would be met with the same success. On the flip side, the cables are removable and replaceable, so if you try and it doesn't work, it would be an easy fix. You should let us know if you try.
Would 12v 1.0A work or would a DC 11v 1A work. And also what way do you wire it up if there is no coloured wires inside do it from Which ones positive or negative because I just have two black wires with strips of copper inside them
Daley Tech Please help, I followed all steps and connected my 12v 1600mah power supply to the kinect pin 10 and ground and I plug the kinect in my computer usb 3.0 port and a message pops up saying that the device is malfunctioned and makes the windows disconnect and connect usb sound every second. I installed all drivers for the kinect I dont know what's wrong. Please Help
Okay, I now have Two Kinect V2 units, and Three Kinect 360 units. I also have Three PS Eye cameras and the PS Move controllers. I have no idea what to use the kinects for, though.
The kinects can be used as a replacement for the PS eye cams. But they will require different software to get it working in VR. You can also do some sort of a combination for controllers and head tracking as well. I'm going to be trying the kinect with PS move controllers soon myself while using www.driver4VR.com
Daley Tech waitwaitwait, so you're saying that by lowering the resolution the Kinect can *in fact* produce 60fps tracking? See, this stuff is why I sub to you pal. I'll check out those drivers and make some of my own to undercooked the kinect hardware and save some juice!
no no... I didn't mean that. Sorry if it came across like that. That software will just track your body through the kinect. So it would be a different way of tracking. The Kinect V2 is a pretty high res camera and is surprisingly good at tracking a body, so I'm curious to see how it does for head tracking compared to the PS move freepie bridge head tracking with the PS move controllers.
So i followed this video and now my computer is always showing "USB device was not recognized" for a few seconds and then disconnecting again. Did i fry something? Thank you!
This was happening to me. After plugging in and out of different USB 3 ports, Windows somehow recognises it and the white light turns on, but then it turns off, then on, then off...
I'm pretty sure I found the problem. I'm using a USB3 chipset which has been found to not work with the Kinect. social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/bb379e8b-4258-40d6-92e4-56dd95d7b0bb/confirmed-list-of-usb-30-pcie-cardslaptopsconfigurations-which-work-for-kinect-v2-during?forum=kinectv2sdk
Mine won't start at all.. I use a 3amp power supply with 12V on Windows 10latest update and usb 3.0 pluged in the usb 3.0 port of my laptop. I have the driver 2.0 SDK installed.
I'm currently using a Kinect v2 for head tracking, and I'm anxiously awaiting for the virtual controller support to use as head tracking. It's difficult to get the head and hands tracking in the same space(move forward=hands move slightly off to one side)
There are 'fixes'(reset yaw/re-center), however if the hmd isn't facing the right direction on startup(within a degree or two) you'll need to fix it every time. I was hoping to eventually use the kinect with immotionar(full body vr tracking), unfortunately that didn't pan out because I don't plan on getting a 'vr suit'.
THANKS FOR PEUTIFULL MIND ( IS ALL SENSOR IN THE KINECT IS WORK ( CAMERA - MIC - INFRA RED )) IS THAR A PROBLEM WITH SDK >>>> THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR VERY US FULL INFO .
I do have 12V power adapter, but i dont have color wire like in the video, it just 2 black wire which can be split into 2 part. All i know is, it is positive polarity symbol. Can i use this ? I can connect it just like in the video ?
I tried this and for some reason it connects then disconnects on my pc, on and off so I have to unplug it. My suspicion is its not the right AC adaptor. Any thoughts?
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate the sentiment. In this niche field I somehow doubt it, but that would be friggen awesome if I did though :) I'll try to keep the content rolling in!

good luck with that, it works really well once its all synced in, but it takes huge amounts of usb bandwidth when running 4 ps4 cams and the V2 kinetic.
Would this assumption be correct?
does this work with xbox 360 (it might be in the video but i need my headphones)
Yes but you have to buy a adapter
I can't connect my Kinect. Seems ironic, but just barely.
It works. I did it with a 2.67A 12V power supply, as described in the video. Though PIN 10 is really hard to solder.
Couldn't you just cut up the propreitary cable and sorter stuff onto there?
(as in, the 12v cable and the USB cable.)
yes!!
soldering all these tiny wires though...
Worked great. Actually used a barrel jack for mine, and it seems to have the perfect amount of space to fit it.
It worked perfectly thanks to you I didn't have to wait 15 days for the adapter to get to my country
What are the USB u got , having issues to pair my one with pc , there was something mentioned in regards of using Intel chips .
Work on xbox one s. Power supply 12V 3A and usb3 cable . Thx
its working with you without any problems ?
What type of USB cable exactly?
Like this one:
www.ebay.com/itm/USB-3-0-A-Male-To-B-Male-A-B-M-M-Cable-Adapter-Printer-Scanner-Cord-Wire-15FT/401112083087?hash=item5d6424aa8f:g:4AIAAOSw2GlXIGYh
Wait so, the port is only sort of proprietary? and A USB Type B will plug right in there?
Has anyone successfully just spliced the power cable in instead of opening the Kinect up?
I haven't done it, but that's what I'm going to do. I really don't know why everyone just opening them up.
Won't you end up with a power supply cable (that you can connect to a socket) and a USB cable without a connector?
According to this you need to attach the power supply to brown and grey wires:
Brown wire: 12V
Gray: GND for 12V
Red: 5V
Black: GND for 5V (USB GND)
Doing this will keep you from having to open up the Kinect. You would only need to buy the power supply since you would be using the original Kinect cable.
@dbeasley1980, have u tried splicing and did it work?
I tried it and it dont work? I plugged it in my usb 3.0 and it gives me an issue on the usb 3.0 with this: !
Thanks again
i use 12v/3A DC, my kinect power on and sent video, but auto shutdown/power on in 10 minutes, how fix it?
Does it need USB 3.0, or will a 2.0 cable work, because ive done everything, but sill no light.
Hello , just have question its save to keep always on power , if pc turn off and power for kinect still on? Nothing's hapen? Thank you
Hello, tell me what parameters should be on the power supply suitable for kinekt 2.0. many thanks
interesting...
There is plenty out there, so I just hope I find a few things that are super cool.
what about the 12v going back to the pc through the USB cable? Is there any protection?
the original USB cable is a modified one. I guess the pins for 12v don't exist on a standard USB port, so there is no problem
Wow what kind of wire strippers are those? I'm too scared to wire anything to do with power for fear of burning my house down, but I really like how you stripped that wire! ;)
could you tell me the model of computer or laptop you are using for the demo?
Can't I just cut off the other part of the Kinect's extraneous cable and stick a regular 12 volt USB to it?
Damn dude you literally just saved me 50$ cuz I was about to buy the adapter but f*ck that I'll just adapt a 12v plug and use a USB cable... Thats amazing man seriously!
Does the fan on the kinect run when it's just powered or when the usb is connected as well?
Hey soo i was gonna do this with out a video tutorial but decided to check anyways but shouldnt the 12v be going in via the pins 9 - + ?
I wonder if this will work in conjunction with raspberry pi and magic mirror and use the camera as a motion sensor....
I don't know if anyone can answer me but how much amps do the Kinect needs, what the minimum amps need?
do you also need to remove the power from the port so you don't fry any 5V plugs with 12V or doesn't it matter
As of right now you might as well buy the adapter off of amazon for $27, because you would have to order the $10 usb 3.0 adapter off amazon anyway (the one used for printers doesn’t work and you can’t find the 3.0 version in stores)
I followed all the steps and realized I didn’t have the cable
Confirmed working on xbox one x! Easy to do with video and all voice commands working as it should. When done modding, don't forget to plug usb cable into the usb port next to the hdmi in on the back of the xbox. Also enable all the voice commands in the xbox settings so you can use cortona to turn on xbox. Thanks!! I used the below items with no issues.
USB 3.0 cable

Going out to buy parts to do this tomorrow... What wattage soldering iron would you recommend? Or should any do?
Hint : Use a hairdryer to get the sealing off, it is much easier as to remove it manual. Besides you can use it again :P
Does it matter which pins you solder the ground and positive to? Not which pins, but which pin they each go on like you did. Could you do it opposite of what you did? If that makes sense lol
Is there a 360 tutorial because I found there is better compatibility for pc games and it’s cheaper.
Hey would I get any issues if I went with a 10 foot cable instead of the 6 foot you linked? Also what tool did you use to strip the cables.
hi! please help. Is xbox 360 kinect e console (model 1538) equivalent to kinect v1 ? Im just starting here hahah. thank u in advance!!
oh shit my ac adaptors wires dont have color coating.. its just copper... what do i do??
Yeah i was gonna but the aftermarket one was only 3 dollars more than the materials for the project soooo
Just to make sure, will this modded adapter still work for normal xbox one (not an S and not an X)?
Are you able to use the ir mode? I'm thing of using this as an indore security camera.
The biggest problem is that you need to disassemble it
And then soldering directly to the board, ouch
Help, I picked up a Xbox 360 at Goodwill but it doesn’t have a fan in the center of the back, and no special usb 3 plug with extra conn on top, but it does have a fixed cable with what looks like a usb 3 plug at the end.
Can I use it to scan with, if so how?
Thanks
I can't remove the security screws because they have like a nipple in the middle that prevents the screwdriver from sliding in..
That nipple is what makes them a security screw. So you need a security torx bit to remove those.
Daley Tech well i solved it with a drill
Worked for my Xbox one x. Great video. Thanks!
What kind of solder are you using? I can't seem to get mine to actually stick to the pins on the Kinect. Thanks
Flux! And clean the surfaces with iso prop beforehand, as well.
I have just one question ! Thanks for with hack but i think ths Fan dont works !!! Do toi have this problem ? Thanks regards
Hi, thanks for your videos, i'm here to ask you what version of kinect is better for scanning, V1 or V2? i'm in doubt and i don't know what should i buy. Which of them is more accurate for scanning?
Thanks
thank you you help me save $50 on an adaptor I didn't need
no problem!
im getting 12v on my multimeter but nothing happens, i dont have the usb cable yet ive ordered it but can someone check what happens when they connect just power and not usb to their kinect. I was expecting fan spin or a light even if its not connected by usb or does it just need the extra 5v from usb to work? If someone does check thx a lot!
Wont work for me. My white wire would be ground and red would go to pin 10 right?
my power supply has a positive and negative but no ground, do you know how should they be soldered too the pins?
I don't know if this is still helpful but negative is ground.
What kind of power adapter should I use? I'm wondering if anyone knows the actual specs on the output port from the XBox One?
GOOOD VIDEO! Direct to the information and not to much bla bla bla. GOOD GOOD GOOD! thanks a lot. Greetings
does fan spin on the back of kinect when plug it in? I did mine it's just connecting and disconnecting
I'm not sure if the fan is always spinning or not, but if it's disconnecting and reconnecting over and over, that's normally cause it's connected to an incompatible USB controller. Try different USB ports, and make sure your power supply is big enough
@@DaleyTech PSU is the same as u said in the video, 12V output with 3000MAH. I will try it thank you.
How did you solve the USB controllers issue? I bought the XBOX ONE Kinect and the USB adapter, and installed the Kinect for Windows SDK but the Kinect won't function because of USB controller settings?
I'm not sure what that issue is. I never ran into it. What is giving that issue?
Does the cooling FAN works?
Gd question, I would like to know when the fan runs too.
Thanks man, you saved me a lot of hassle and 50 BUCKS. ;)
Daley Tech I ordered a the adapter. Would you be intersted in finding away to do your mod but never open the kinect? ie save warrety?
What sort of USB cable does it need? Usb 3? Is it just a standard USB printer port?
I needs to be a USB 3.0 A-B cable.
The issue is that the Vive base stations also use infrared lasers for positioning, and since the kinect also blasts the room with IR, it causes tracking issues (for myself at least).
oh no, that does make sense though.
You can certainly do it all that way. This thing is pretty power hungry, so using AA Batteries would be a bit of a stretch. lol
And also what way do you wire it up if there is no coloured wires inside do it from Which ones positive or negative because I just have two black wires with strips of copper inside them
look at the rubber on the wires closely, one will have ridges or a thin white line, those are positive type and plain smooth wire is negative.
Please Help
th-cam.com/video/XRqx1CVh1qI/w-d-xo.html
Daley Tech, what would say works better for body tracking: 4x ps eyes or Kinect V2?
Both can work pretty well, so I would use whichever you have on hand.
I'm using a USB3 chipset which has been found to not work with the Kinect.
social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/bb379e8b-4258-40d6-92e4-56dd95d7b0bb/confirmed-list-of-usb-30-pcie-cardslaptopsconfigurations-which-work-for-kinect-v2-during?forum=kinectv2sdk
doing this can you still use the original cord and just leave the power cord you soldered unplugged to connect to the xbox?
As long as you can still get the original to still fit in there, it should work.
your right it works. but my kinect repeats on and off like its booting up then has a problem and shuts off
Mine won't start at all.. I use a 3amp power supply with 12V on Windows 10latest update and usb 3.0 pluged in the usb 3.0 port of my laptop. I have the driver 2.0 SDK installed.
What USB controller is your laptop, and are you using the microsoft drivers or the drivers from that chip manufacturer?
Could you use this thing, or maybe even the Xbox 360 version for getting some basic head and motion tracking in combination with a Pimax4k?
Nevermind, just found your other video in regards to this topic. Great stuff, really! =D
Yeah, for sure. I used it in this video here:
th-cam.com/video/Rf_WAFywi1o/w-d-xo.html
Oh good. Sorry, i didn't see your reply till after I answered. Thanks!
I'm currently using a Kinect v2 for head tracking, and I'm anxiously awaiting for the virtual controller support to use as head tracking. It's difficult to get the head and hands tracking in the same space(move forward=hands move slightly off to one side)
Interesting.. I'll have to see if I run into the same issues. I hope I do actually, lol. I'll try to find a fix then :P
VR suit you say..... sounds cool. Perhaps something buildable?
Done it works, strongly recommend ~!!!!
@Steve Underwood i can try to remind myself i think. But anyway it burned my kinect quick in 2 3 days if i remember good
THANKS FOR PEUTIFULL MIND ( IS ALL SENSOR IN THE KINECT IS WORK ( CAMERA - MIC - INFRA RED )) IS THAR A PROBLEM WITH SDK >>>> THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR VERY US FULL INFO .
Can i use laptop power supply as the power adapter, because i dont want it to be over voltage or anything harm to the kinect.
19.5V - 4.62A
That will ruin your kinect. You really need to use a 12V power adapter.
Any thoughts?
same here then i tried again and nownothing work
Did you solve this?
nice vids man.. like your vids.. I am feeling it some day soon your gonna be bigger than a guy like Austin Evans
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate the sentiment. In this niche field I somehow doubt it, but that would be friggen awesome if I did though :)
I'll try to keep the content rolling in!
Anytime man. Any way you could make a video for fathersday maybe like diy vr for under 100$
