- Happy New Year, everyone! We've shown you what's inside Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4, and today we examine the hardware inside the new Kinect sensor bar. It's not a device that you're likely going to repair, but iFixit's Kyle Wiens explains how it's an improvement over the technology in the first-gen Kinect.
Find iFixit's complete Xbox One Kinect teardown here: www.ifixit.com/...
Find our Xbox One teardown analysis video here: • What's Inside Microsof...
im here 5 years later and the only thing preventing me from using this with windows 7 is fact the SDK is coded to only install on windows 10 and theres STILL no open source alternative and the fact you can't run windows 7 and 10 dual boot on a UEFI BIOS
also, wtf is a nexus?
I love these videos. Maybe the controllers next?
I wonder which chip has the bad language filter which penalizes the user for swearing at his or her own home.
That Would be built into the game
AwwC00L
Don't mind the stealth troll, he or she doesn't "get it".
You should get an achievement for swearing, not penalized.
Kyle sounds so sophisticated and nerdy. I need to get more like him :)
Kyle is just the typical nerd :D What you do want hear is a proper engineer, What i usually watch is the eevblog, They do proper taredowns.
***** Amen to that. Dave Jones is awesome :) Very interesting for both engineers and just curious people in general imo.
I was hoping that they would at least show a pic of the IR grid they were going on and on about.
Basically this: graphics.stanford.edu/~mdfisher/Images/KinectIR.png
Nick Schafer I see, thanks!
I really enjoy these breakdown videos. Would definitely like to see more.
i love this guy, all of these tear down videos are really interesting
Could the 3 IR blasters have something to do with X,Y, and Z coordinates? Just a thought.
I'd love to have some info on the PS4 camera. The PS3 camera, on a PC, can go up to ~167Hz. Though, in my experience, only half the frame updates at that speed. Might have been the bus I was using. I think the PS4 camera uses two WVGA or WXVGA cameras, taking alternating frames. I'm tempted to buy the camera, by itself. The PS3 camera can be bought for 8 USD and, for the price, is a decent high-speed camera. Decent mic too.
I thought the Xbox One Kinect was going to be Time-Of-Flight? When did Microsoft go back to Structured Light?
In fact, it uses ToF, probably the guy in the video didn't know that, these 3 IR emitters emit at different frequencies, which allows the IR sensor to calculate the difference between the signal being emitted and the signal being received, thus obtaining the distance.
With Microsoft forcing everyone to get a Kinect up until recently Im sure you can find the X1 Kinect on Craigslist fairly easily. Maybe post a wanted ad.
Well worth the extra cost, some pretty cool tech.
The fan is mounted in the center and pulls from both sides NOT from one side to the other.
Did you find an NSA representative in there somewhere?
Happy new year, Tested!!
I think he messed up the cameras. The first camera with the transparent lens is the regular camera and the second one with the dark (Gallium Arsenide) lens is the IR camera.
Don’t know why they bowed out so hard on it should’ve just kept it for what it was with a few specialize studios making Contant for it but it really should’ve been a component for this current generation and bringing Xbox with the VR. But apparently they’re not interested at all in VR with Xbox this generation for some reason… Strange
I like Kyle Wiens. He's pretty cool!
Can you break it down and tell us why the Kinect would just die? "Kinect is unplugged." issue.
how about a teardown of the WiiU & the control pad ?
At around 5:10 he mentions the name of the USB port, what is it called? "USB like port?" or "Light port?"what did he say? i want to buy this socket and make a cable for PC.. Thank you.
"USB like port" as in "similar to USB"
ah :) I didn't understand his American accent, i'm from Australia.. sometimes on American tv soaps someone says "Oh my God!" it sounds like "Oh my Guard!" as in security Guard. "God" and "Guard" sounds exactly the same with American accent.
I hope I'm not the only one who came here looking for a good way to disable the Kinect without having to use rubber contact cement and metal tape. The XBone still requires the Kinect to be connected in order to run, right?
Jordan Dickson Nope I'm not the only one who came here for that reason? Or nope, the XBone no longer needs to have the Kinect connected?
Jordan Dickson Hmm... I could have sworn that was still a necessary feature. My info must be out of date lol
.....
I, uh... I live under a rock.... Yeah that's it, I'm basically Patrick Star!
Untrue still even to this day you can't use your microphone for features like "record that" or "take a screen shot" unless the Kinect is hooked up also. You can use your controller for that but most names pause when you do this so to just get a picture or vIdeo of a paused screen. I have mine pLuged iN But I unplugged the mics flat strip cable. It unlocks features just by having it plugged in eveN though I'm oN a headset.
I really hope that we get kinect 2.0 for windows
Prepare yourselves people. All privacy debates aside, this stuff is the future. It's cool, for sure.
Have my kinect on rn and using ir camera and my hoodie is reflecting the ir grid back to the kinect letting me see it and it's reading the grid as a guest lol
Huh? Why the infrared if the new Kinect sensor is time-of-flight based? Or am I getting something wrong?
it uses ToF, probably the guy in the video didn't know that, these 3 IR emitters emit at different frequencies, which allows the IR sensor to calculate the difference between the signal being emitted and the signal being received, thus obtaining the distance.
that smile on the end .. lol
Have fun with Fighter Within, hehe.
Great video! Keep up the good work!
Not sure what could really go bad on a solid state device so long as it's not dropped or built faulty to begin with.
Flash relies on a floating gate. Basically electrons tunnel through an insulator to store the value for a decent amount of time. This tunneling behavior is what ultimately destroys the flash.
Flash uses a floating gate transistor that permanently stores a charge in a totally electrically insulated floating gate that isn't connected to anything. Hot carrier injection or tunneling is used to force electrons though the insulator and into the floating gate at very high voltages where they are essentially trapped forever (until reprogrammed again) and electrostatically cause the non floating gate to be on or off depending on the content of the charge trapped in the floating gate. Thus representing one or zero.
The high voltage and tunneling of electrons through the insulator breaks down the dielectric insulator with each erase/program cycle as electrons tunnel through the material and change the molecular state and electron composition. Basically the high voltage tunneling poisons the insulator with free electrons (?) until the dielectric starts becoming a conductor and progressively leaking so much that the floating gate can no longer hold a isolated charge. It just conducts and drains instantly through the insulator when you try to fill it and can't ever be a "1" again.
Gary Merchant
Regularly used Flash chips, and capacitors are the only components I can really see having a comparatively short life.
Capacitors can fail by a somewhat similar means where the dielectric gets pierced and creates a weak spot in the insulation (I don't think this is the same as tunneling, though, and only happens if the capacitor is overcharged, defective, or eventual dielectric creep allows a failure to occur at regular running voltages)
Parts like these should really be designed to be easily replaced.
@Tested
You got all the technology of Kinect 2.0 wrong. More details, look at the link to read about the actual tech used:
www.gamasutra.com/blogs/DanielLau/20131127/205820/The_Science_Behind_Kinects_or_Kinect_10_versus_20.php
And Microsoft bought 'Canesta' and '3DV' for the sensors and the entire ToI tech used in Kinect 2.0.
Any question if kinect don;t turn if possible have desolder any connections in the conector of power??
Where is the picture of the soft chip??
i thought kinect 2.0 uses Time of Flight principle instead of projected structured light as in kinect 1.0?
Same here wikipedia:"Xbox One consoles ship with an updated version of Kinect; the new Kinect uses a wide-angle time-of-flight camera), and processes 2 gigabits of data per second to read its environment. The new Kinect has greater accuracy with three times the fidelity over its predecessor and even the ability to see in the dark thanks to its new active IR sensor". I don't think iFixit knows much about how things work, it's all about selling tools.
Me too, so I am confused now.
Guy on left is the classic geek
Good video nonetheless
Did you find a NSA labeled chip in there ?
They didn't even take a art the part with all of the mics did they??
He picked up an Xbox1 because of the tech? He should have picked up a PS4 and then picked up a standalone camera from the xbox1 when they come out.
"What's Inside Xbox One's Kinect Sensor" - interesting video. Today they examine the hardware inside the new Kinect sensor bar. It's not a device that you're likely going to repair, but iFixit's Kyle Wiens explains how it's an improvement over the technology in the first-gen Kinect.
for those of u wondering if your being spied by Microsoft because of the kinect then go buy a privacy shield for the kinect like I did!
or just dont use it
Again, large cooling needs. We need to improve our cooling technology.
Graphene sounds like an excellent solution, no more copper.
Joel Laguna graphene is not about cooling its can just handle 1000's of degreas while silicon only 100
Wintutos DEATH TO THE APPLE INVADERS
Does anyone here know of any way to reuse the camera from this? I just took apart a kinect I found and I want to use it's RGB camera as a regular camera. Perhaps an Arduino or Raspberry Pi to make the camera work?
an arduino won't have enough speed for a 1080p camera, the raspberry pi probably does, but you'll have to find out which protocol the camera uses to communicate, which I think is quite difficult.
Please update videos that do not involve tearing things apart. I will go to ifixit for that, tested is not the best platform for all these videos.
the dude in the yellow shirt should take the job of the one in the blue. the other dude seems very lost. and always just sounds like he reading off a script and has no idea what he is talking about! the dude in the yellow is cool! hes a good speaker!
where is the picture 5:20 ???
On holiday.
Louis ur pic makes it better
Illuminati - "stay right where you are!".
Anyone know if they've made a what's inside Wii U. I can't find one.
They'll probably do a video on it soon
I hope so, I'd like to see that :)
Of course it is Jack... A relative of yours perhaps?
Very cool i like playstation best because of the games they make and the dev's they get on board but i must say the xboxone looks better built overall with more processors. I just hope they say gears of war is coming then might change ones mind of ps4.
why Kyle always wear the same shirt?
*****
Or all three of the videos where done one after another on the same day
Because it's possible to make multiple videos on the same subject on the same day in order to increase ad revenue.
Maybe he is a cartoon character
For the love of god i need my face biometrically scanned and put in a database. Jesus christ i need my heart rate, weight, height, and habits all watched, measured, and recorded. Please, please let me give you 500$ for this technology, i beg thee.
Answer: a lot of screws
Something!
i'm surprised the Kinect components aren't full of demonic lost souls & NSA agents XD
The dude might be right; this device makes the Xbone different from the PS4, but to ME, that is just a worthless gadget. It might be useful and advanced, but it's practically worthless for the traditional games i play (And the genres i enjoy as well).
Why didn't they show the NSA monitoring software part? lol
Question: on the internet said those camera is a x ray cam? is this true? conspiracy?....
Oh no! He called it a heat pad! We need to correct him,
Its cool to watch 'cause i'd never disassemble my own stuff.
subscribed I love you guys
IR diodes ? wear out ? this guy doesnt know what he's talking about.
If driven too hard, or getting too hot, sure.
With MTTF of about 100000 hours and huge-ass heatsinks, I highly doubt that they will die before the owner.
What's Inside Xbox One's Kinect Sensor? Pure Evil.
those are a lot of interesting potatoes
THE NSA IS INSIDE IT!!!
I just had to comment even though I know it's a waste of typing. Has anyone heard the phrase 'peeping tom'? Do you invite people to secretly look through your windows? How about paying big bucks to them to do so? Having this spy device is exactly both. MS is doing this AND making large amounts of money...and not just on the sales of the hardware.
@brokpowell ...
HALO NEEDLER!!
now that they have nokia they could stick the 41meg camera in it :)
Nerd has a stain on his collar.
CIA is makig the cameras XD
the kids will find it normal in the future to be watched as they grow up by cameras and mics on the net all the time this will evolve into a monster and the government will be in control of that monster
Xbox wasn't the first to do it PS2 Had Itoy (said :eye toy) and that was camera baced
Well, technically we had webcams before that.
Kinect is a completely different technology over the eye toy can't really compare them.
yes but is sort of the same concept with a camera controlling the game!
Edison wasn't the first to make a light bulb, though patented it. People had done it before him and it was sort of the same concept with a bulb producing light.
3D imaging technology wasn't used by anything before the Xbox my ass....
+Mildew Mildew It's used everywhere, Building, Transport & CGI.
FK that i even click away the camera on my Samsung tv...having a camera connected to the internet in your home is not a good idea.
norm bores the shit out of me ughgghth
OMG! You guys have a needler! I WANT IT :D :D
There's a long video, if not several videos, showing how its custom made for them. :)
the answer is "CRAP"
XBONE
I can't get over how awkward the asian dude is.
that host is annoying
Please Don't let Norm be an interviewer as he is so annoying
I prefer him, than Will, because he doesn't interrupt Kyle so much.
*****
agreed, will cuts people off alot
*****
norm is great
No, Norm is great for this type of content because he actually lets the guest talk instead of trying really hard to sound as smart or smarter than the guest by interrupting them or speaking over them.
lol
If you don't need your Kinect hit me up I want one
its just a fancy webcam
sorry to ruin the fun but it is!
Talk to much
FIRST
stfu.
To get a life?
THIRD!
To get a life?
No. I was the third comment.
Oh I thought you were the third to " GET A LIFE " my bad
