How to Live This Lent for Others

  • Lent is about transformation, but that transformation will be incomplete if we make it about ourselves. Instead of aiming for self-mastery alone this Lent, what is the key to living this Lent for others?
    In 2 Samuel 7, when King David says he will build a house for the Lord, the Lord says to David through Nathan that he will not be the one to build the temple-but his son will.
    Learning from this story, we see that we may want to do a good and noble thing for Lent, but that doesn’t mean it’s what God wants us to do. Ask God what he wants from you this Lent.
    Discipline is great, but there’s a step after that: being generous. Asking God what he is asking of you, instead of deciding on your own, is a step from discipline to generosity, from self-mastery to deeper relationship. Aim to do your prayer, fasting, and almsgiving out of generosity.

    “God, what do you want from me.” This sounds like the best message I have heard in modern times. Let the Lord be Lord, by asking his desire for your life.

    A big shout out to Fr. Mike from Karachi, Pakistan! Thank you for explaining it beautifully. ‘Spiritual maturity comes from when you make a switch from discipline to being generous’. One of our Parish priest often preached ‘Ask not for what God can do for you, but what you can do for God’. May we allow God to use us as a vessel for a purpose. Amen

    Father Mike,
    Thank you so much for your videos. May God continue to bless you and your endeavors to keep bringing us such fantastic and helpful content.
    My 9 year old son and I watch your videos and he quotes "Fr. Mike" throughout the day. He's a big fan and what you say really resonates with him. Just yesterday, he watched your videos on fasting and he decided to give up playing on his tablet this lent, chocolates and junk food...willingly and without prompting because you inspired him to want to think less of giving in to what we want in the now and replacing it with what God wants for us now and in the long run.
    Just one example of how you impact his life and feed his love for Jesus and the church. Who knows, maybe he will follow in your footsteps, God willing.🤗
    Thank you for your amicable and good humored personality, and for your intriguing and thought provoking discourse.
    You are a treasure! God bless you 🌟😁

    Lent is not only giving up things. Lent is part of giving, part of spreading kindness, maybe you could say you give up parts of your ego. You give without expectations, your time, your listening ear, your kind words, a smile, a helping hand. Lent for me is making room and get rid of the superficial stuff and fill the gap that's left with the deep stuff. It helps me to grow my roots deeply. It declutters my soul. And for me, it is making sure that parts of that and hopefully all of it will stay with me after lent. I hope that makes sense? Sending lots of love to everyone.

      @@kikitam6415 You don't get saved by following Jesus, you get saved by believing on his payment for your sins on the cross. You must believe the gospel, receive Christ as your savior by faith in his blood.
      Romans 3:25
      Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
      1 Corinthians 15:1-4 (THE GOSPEL)
      Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the GOSPEL which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
      2 By which also ye are SAVED, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have BELIEVED in vain.
      3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
      4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
      Are you saved? If you have not placed your faith on the shed blood of Jesus Christ you are not saved. Please search out this matter and get saved TODAY! All you have to do is TRUST in nothing else but Jesus Christ's finished payment for your sins on the cross.
      Look at the thief that went to heaven in the cross, he did not follow Jesus, did not obey any commands, did not take the sacraments, and he still got saved on that same day, he got saved by placing his faith in Christ.
      Acts chapter 10: Cornelius got saved by believing, he received the Holy Ghost before doing any work. The bible says that when we believe the Gospel we receive the Holy Spirit and we are SEALED by him.

      Henrique Lins Our Lord tells us in Matthew 7: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.”
      Our Lord also tells us in Matthew 16 that “if any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”
      You’re right that we have place our faith in the Lamb. But, as James tell us, “faith without works is dead”.

    This reminds me of a wise word I got from a young priest years ago when I was getting snagged up in trying to figure out whether certain sins were mortal or venial: “Remember that it’s not a personal perfection project. It’s about carrying Christ to the world. It’s about love.”

    I feel like with 3 kids ages 4 and under & being a full time teacher, I'm tapped out on generosity. Maybe I can just work on having a more generous spirit with my kids and students? I feel bad, but I'm struggling to do more than that at this point in my life. I want to give more of myself, but I honestly feel like i have nothing left to give.

      Discipline trains the will and mortified (subdues) the flesh. This teaches us humility and dependence on God and helps us resist the temptation to sin. Also, the sacrifice we make has redemptive value when offered in love to God for the sake of others. For example, offer up your fast so that another person will receive the grace of faith and conversion.

      Dear sibling , we all are lost from time to time, as we are lacking , not perfect , sinners but God loves us the way we are and rejoices when we confide in Him and admit our weakness. We draw our strength from Him and He is a jealous Father, He wants us to perpetually talks to Him, asks for His Blessings, His help, His Hand to lead us, His Holy Spirit to enlighten us:) so don't worry dear sibling, you are not alone struggling in this imperfect world and striving to do your best to please the One and Only God; the Holy Trinity :)
      Be sure God is so happy to see you admitting that you need Him always, everywhere and anytime :) He will provide what your soul is seeking for.
      We all love you here as your brothers and sisters and please do pray for me, so I can draw closer and closer to God, and fulfil all what He is waiting from me.
      Father Mike is a Blessing and a true Messenger of Love and Peace. So many souls are returning to the flock and this is Wonderful. Praised be the Lord. Amen! Allelujah !

    #AskFrmike Could you do a video on if you get raped abortion is not the answer? I work in an ER and abortion is a big topic at work. Many people do not understand why the Church does not allow abortion for rape victims. Thank you for all your work Father
