The Man with His Feet on the Ground. the True King to all of them..MUSICIANS.. Leon was Willie, Was Elton, Was Louie. Leon was EVERY MAN for Every Woman.
I could not believe it. I'd never heard this version by Leon. I enjoyed it immensely because it was not only great but it just demonstrates what a stylists he could be not only with this mastery of the piano but his voice back when it was still in good shape. Leon was in incredibly hard working musician for the first 20+ years of his career and when he hit it big he was no longer young man, he was Leon Russell, Master of Space and Time. As a songwriter Leon worked for years to learn to write songs and he devoted his energy in search of writing 'standards', songs that other musicians would want to perform and record, songs that would live beyond a single high point on the charts for a few weeks. A Song For You, was his masterpiece in that capacity and the statistics and covers by other artists, prove the provenance of that song. Jackson Browne, says it's his favorite song, truly. Thanks a heck of an endorsement. There are other artists who had more hits but there was one and only one Leon Russell. He made a mark a foot wide on music history.
Great comments, though I do kinda crack up when people say “this version” speaking of the original. But I agree that it’s so common that the songwriter doesn’t have as big of a hit of his/her song as another artist covering it. They do get paid, but many times they don’t get the credit cause so many people don’t know that they wrote the song. Leon was one of a kind for sure. ❤
Can you imagine being friends with Leon - he seems like such an amazing guy - he would have been a wonderful friend - just sitting around making beautiful music.
"And when my life is over, remember when we were together. We were alone and I was singing this song for you".... WE REMEMBER!! ❤❤❤ Love you Leon. Thanks for ALL the Music🕊 🎶🎵🎶
Saw him and was able to get a signed Autograph on his picture he came to Our small town back in the 80s….Loved him then and still love his music …He was Magic
Kinda makes me want to cry, and I never cry! I hate seeing him smoking as I think perhaps he’d still be here with us, if not for that damn tobacco, but Leon, forever in my heart!
His tobacco and everything else. Those were the times when drugs were mainstream , everyone was overindulging and it comes home to roost , we must pay the price. Beautiful song it touches the heart and soul.
Had the pleasure of growing up in Tulsa Oklahoma shop at the same grocery store as him and his lovely wife eventually became his paperboy and then when I was in a band when I was a teenager he would come and watch our band at these little house parties really gave us some street cred
Thank you for posting this amazing video! In my 60+ years of loving music, not many musicians seriously made my heart and soul smile and be happy the way Leon Russell always did. An amazing gift to us all! ❤RIP Leon!❤
This was GREAT footage, thanks for uploading! I saw Leon live at numerous Venus back in the day, but none were in the video. God Bless you, Leon may you RIP 🙏
And I've already given most all my LEON things on to my Grandchildren so the legacy lives on in this family because someday they'll have it all and are excited carrying his talents on into the future ❤❤
Love him ❤️ this was my wedding song in 1974 ❤ I saw him on Sept 7th 1973 and have many LEON items and records even studio albums he's one of a kind sooo glad i got to be apart of his legacy ❤️ I know he's singing and playing his piano in heaven 😊
This is such a beautiful song that I had to research who originally sung it . I often play it just to ponder over the lyrics, which I will often play over and over . Continued Rest Mr. Leon Russell and Mr. Donnie Hathaway.
🕯️ 🎩 Leon Russell is still my absolute favorite! A Song for You was my wedding song and it will be my funeral song, I was blessed to see him twice in my lifetime. PS My husband looks a lot like Leon, a coincidence? I think not 😉
Wait, what?? I had NO idea!! Played the piano and an excellent bass player! I love his voice! So glad I found this. Rest in peace, Leon. Your music us beautiful. Thanks for sharing it with us. 🥰
It's interesting how you can have no idea a person exist and yet know all the lyrics to a song he wrote. The Donny Hathaway version is the one I know and now I am glad to hear this original version as well.
There's not a single song that had that kind of impact.I believe EVERYTHINGhe recorded, or played live were ALLprecious GEMS!!!!ALL Zthe way back to his studio music with Frank Sinatra and I had the op.to see him back in the day,and one of his last performances.RIP LR. See ya on the other side brother......
Leon is among the all-time greats, not only of the Rock 'n Roll era, but in the history of music. I have seen him perform 3 times over the course of 40 years; the final time just before he passed away when he opened for Gregg Allman (who also passed away shortly thereafter)...
I've never heard this song before or at least I don't remember it. I'm a child of the 1970's and I love the classic music from then. Those songs were sung with such soul and emotion. Now I feel like I have "new" music to hear and love. In the end music goes on and on even when time and musicians fade away.
You gave me so much love my friend .no God intervention like some .but a beautiful teenagers life of music that said so much to to me and changed me . Always a freind to me .I miss you.
What a superb video montage to highlight this iconic piece from Leon. Thanks to (I'm guessing Spencer Ramsey) the one who edited and spliced the closeups of Leon from his career moments in such keen array and timing. Nice job!! It's a great tribute. I own the "Signature Songs" collection and it's one of my favorite listens- so pure and clear and Leon in it's structure and piano finesse.
OMG! I L❤VE LEON SO MUCH! Saw him in concert 5 times in the day! The first time, he was so "messed up" he got on the piano, and FELL OFF! The concert was canceled, though, and we got our money back HA! 😅
@@AMYBIERHAUS Oh I'll bet that was fun back then. My uncle was at the show they recorded for his Live album in Long Beach around that time. I didn't see him until like the 90s.
One of the greats. As a guitar player I gravitated to guitar players but one day I heard Leon singing the Ballad of Mad Dogs and Englishman and I knew I just heard pure genius and wished I had another lifetime to learn piano.
One of the best songs of all time. R.I.P. Leon.

Interesting the Trinity shirt and at end jumps on Grand piano and grabs a stars and stripes hat🎉😂❤ just another coincidence 🎉😂❤
I love him and I play🎉😂❤

He said he wrote that as song in 10 min. He said it just kind of came thru him.
A songwriter, a musician, a singer, AN ICON!!! Gone BUT NEVER FORGOTTEN...

I'm so glad I got to see him live several times.
