    The saddest part was with the elderly homeless man. Because he realized that he can’t control things. He can’t play God.
    So, instead of focusing on saving him, he instead made his last day comforting. He spent time with him. He fed him.

The time is estimated between 30 and 40 years.

      "It's A Wonderful Life" and "Groundhog Day" have very different plots. I would not even compare the 2 movies that way. God is one of the central character's in IAWL, even when we don't think about it. It's really a deeper movie than "Groundhog Day" on many levels. Also, Jimmy Stewart just was a flat-out better actor than Bill Murray ever was.

    A "groundhog" is a large ground squirrel, and is the largest of all squirrels. It burrows in the ground and hibernates in the winter.
    It is also called "marmot", "woodchuck", "whistlepig" (because it whistles) and many other names in North America.
    The celebration of "Groundhog Day" derives from the old German tradition of Dachstag (Badger Day). If a badger emerges from its burrow on this day and sees its shadow, it will retreat to its den and winter will go on longer. If it does not see its shadow, spring will arrive early.

    • @fidenemini111
      @fidenemini111 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yes, that's correct, Americans adopted this German tradition. In Lithuania we also have the similar one, also with the badger. But the day is not the second of Febuary, it is 25th of January - the middle of the winter in our geographic location . When the badger wakes up that day and goes out from his burrow and if the day is sunny he is scared of his own shadow, runs back and goes to sleep, which means the winter will be long. On the other hand if the day is cloudy and gloomy and he doesn't see his shadow, he goes for a walk. And if the people see that day the footprints of the badger all over the forest, well that means he's not sleeping any more, and the winter is close to its end. We have a saying tabout the middle of the winter - the badger turns over on the other side while sleeping😁.

      @@fidenemini111 Given that Lithuania converted to Christianity in 1387 but didn't adopt the Gregorian calendar until 1915, I'd be curious if maybe the date difference is actually due to the Julian calendar conversion. Early 15th century would have been 8 days of difference. Granted, the Gregorian calendar didn't exist until 1582, but it's not uncommon for cultures to backdate holidays.

      There were lots of German immigrants in Pennsylvania and there is even a Germantown, Pennsylvania. The importance of this tradition is centered around the planting season for farming. An early spring means a longer planting and harvesting period, increasing the chances of success.

    It's too bad you saw "Edge of Tomorrow" before this. This is the famous implementation of the concept, which has changed the way people use the term "Groundhog Day." It used to just refer to the quaint, obscure holiday, but now it means "being stuck in potentially endless repetition." This movie is a classic. It should be in everybody's list of "must watch" movies.

    I read how someone once did the maths about Groundhog Day, that it would take so many hours of work and study to become skilled in things like piano-playing, ice sculpture, etc.. Plus all the time spent getting to know everybody. And so on, and so on. What it amounted to is that Phil must have gone through that loop *THOUSANDS* of times. Thinking about it, small wonder that he went through a suicide phase.

    14:50 "Breathes There The Man" -- by Sir Walter Scott (Scottish poet)
    Breathes there the man, with soul so dead,
    Who never to himself hath said,
    This is my own, my native land!
    Whose heart hath ne’er within him burn’d,
    As home his footsteps he hath turn’d,
    From wandering on a foreign strand!
    If such there breathe, go, mark him well;
    For him no Minstrel raptures swell;
    High though his titles, proud his name,
    Boundless his wealth as wish can claim;
    Despite those titles, power, and pelf,
    The wretch, concentred all in self,
    Living, shall forfeit fair renown,
    And, doubly dying, shall go down
    To the vile dust, from whence he sprung,
    Unwept, unhonour’d, and unsung.

    For me, this is a five out of five star movie. My absolute favorite type of story is a tale of redemption. I love this movie because Phil changes his fate by improving himself for the sake of improvement, not to accomplish any goal. At first, when he first starts repeating Groundhog Day, he decides to improve himself specifically so that he can sleep with Rita. The improvement that he makes to himself is real, but the motivation isn't. So he keeps going. Over time, he loss the desire to nail Rita and starts working toward improving himself for the sake of his fellow humans. He saves the kid from falling, Buster from choking, the ladies from the flat tire, and others just because he can. He never saves the old man, and from that he learns that there are somethings he can't change; that's futility. That failure is as important as his successes. He finally breaks the cycle, and wins the affection of Rita, because he is a genuinely better person. She deserves the man he becomes, not the man he was. I watch this movie several times a year. Over all, I have seen it probably 200 times, and I don't expect that to change for the rest of my life.

      in that sense, if you're not trying to be a doctor or study something specifically useful (like business or something), you can study whatever you want
      i got my degree in linguistics, but i'm an artist
      i enjoyed it and learned a lot, i learned how to read academic articles and how to conduct studies, how to study and describe languages, how to understand language in a way most people generally don't
      i needed a degree (and my family paid for it with college funds from my dad and grandpas jobs, plus i got a partial scholarship so i had no loans), and i didn't have any specific job in mind (like doctor or lawyer) so i didn't have to study a specific field

      it's great if you want to study something on your own and learn just about that, but i think that's a fundamental misrepresentation of what college is for
      it's not JUST learning the subject, it's how you learn it, how to write papers and articles, how to think critically and logicaly
      if you just study linguistics on your own, even using the exact same textbooks as used in college, you'll learn linguistics - but if you get a degree in linguistics, you learn a lot more outside of linguistics itself that can be applied to so many other aspects of your life and so many other jobs

      @@burnout_2017 I don't know why they did that. I guess maybe they just thought it looked better on film? It is kind of cool to see my home town in a movie tho.

      @@joevoolo8532 i think it was because the town is not near the knob. The actual knob really doesnt have much other than the parking lot, the stump and stage, and then a souvenir tent and a refreshment stand....thats it. Would have looked bad on film i think. They do i nice job meshing them together in your town. I know how you feel though, the mall i grew up in was where they filmed Dawn of the Dead back in the late 70s..the sequel to Night of the Living Dead. It is weird seeing the ice rink and stores that we hung out in as kids. Some of my friends were extras in the overhead helicopter scenes playing zombies in the parking lot. But your town is nice and picturesque and did a good job mimicking punxsutawney....except its flat...😊

    Good reaction! Glad you liked the film.
    Groundhog Day is one of my favourite films of all time, and I've seen it lots of times. I enjoy it so much, I re-watch it every February 2nd! I've always liked Bill Murray anyway, and this film is a lot more complex than it at first appears. There are so many layers to this film exploring themes about time and eternity, death and destiny, choice, self-realisation and development, etc, yet there's also romance and humour in there and overall it's a wholesome, feelgood film.
    If you watch the extra commentary on the extended DVD, the director Harold Ramis (who also plays the neurologist in the scene at 13:48) says that Phil was probably stuck in that same day for many, many years, although as with much of this film (like why it happened in the first place), it's left to the imagination of the viewer. Sadly, Murray and Ramis fell out during the making of Groundhog Day and didn't talk for years (which is why Bill is not in the 'Making of' features), but fortunately Murray relented and they made up just before Ramis died in 2014. th-cam.com/video/2d7kkecft4w/w-d-xo.html

      Your comment about every day above ground being a good day reminds me of an expression I read a few years ago (after spending two years dealing with my late parents' estate), concerning bad weather: "Cemeteries are full of those who would love any kind of weather." After that, sometimes I would make a point of visiting the village cemetery when it was raining, because at least I was still able to.

    Phil started his journey as a very flawed man. "Groundhog Day" is about the perfection of the human soul.
    *FUN FACT:* We know from an early script draft - the idea stems from the Buddhist ideology that it takes 10,000 years to perfect the human soul. Once Phil perfected his soul, he was freed from the curse. This 10,000 years to betterment was confirmed by director Harold Ramis (RIP).

    I've heard it said Harold Ramis (Director) knew that Bill Murray gets grumpier and more difficult to work with over the course of a movie's shooting.. And so for this, he deliberately shot the ending scenes (Where Phil is at his absolute best) early on, and the opening bits where he's a self-centred unpleasant... individual.. towards the end of filming.

      All living species in the genus Marmota it commonly known as a Marmot, only Marmota monax is called a Groundhog plus many other names, even other members of North American Marmota are referred to as Marmots, like the Hoary marmot (Marmota caligata), the Yellow-bellied marmot (Marmota flaviventris), the Olympic marmot (Marmota olympus), the Vancouver Island marmot (Marmota vancouverensis). This is why personally i call "Groundhogs" Wuchak Marmot (Marmota monax), wuchak (woo-chak) being from native American language meaning digger, rather that the European name Groundhog aka Groundpig.

    I love that you had no idea what the movie was about when you started watching. That's rare for this movie because it's become an icon in the US and a metaphor for the same day repeating over and over again, so people who haven't seen it still know what it is about. It was great that as he wakes up the first time with the repeating day, you're discovering what's going on just as he does. This is the best reaction I've seen to this movie, even though you cut some of the iconic lines. 😊

    It's been calculated that Phil spent nearly 35 years reliving the same day. They say that because he would need roughly that long to master all of the things he mastered.
    Good news, no laundry foe 35 years, you will always have clean clothes. Also, the character Buster was played by Bill Murrays older brother. They've appeared in 4 or 5 films together.

    Very good and fun movie, but not a masterpiece. Masterpiece is something without flaws. For example, when Phil is running out of his room instead of slowly doing what he was doing the day before, there is no way he would reach the same people and the same destination at the same tine as yesterday. Events on the street would be radically different. And there are many flaws like that throughout the whole movie. Now, a masterpiece would be, if movie accounted for all those things, while staying equally fun. And no, other movies with the same plot are not rip off, because this movie was not the first. There is a short movie from 1990 called 12:01 PM (you can find it here on TH-cam), followed by the full movie 12:01 (without PM) from 1993
