Oh my gosh, I knit exactly the same way you do! People have told me it's weird, but it feels so organic and natural to me!
I've tried doing something similar to this for a cable, but didn't manage it well. I'm thinking I'll try again the way you're doing it and see if it works. I'm so clumsy with the cable needle I'd like to find something that works without it. Nice tutorial!

I taught myself to knit continental from a book over 20 years ago, so I didn't have that much guidance. My hands just eventually found their own way. I don't purl that way all the time. Sometimes I do a Norwegian purl, and I have another method I use sometimes too, but that's my most common one.

@@FiberLoveDiary I was teaching myself from a book at around the same time! I too found it difficult to get much guidance. I'd never seen the Norwegian purl, so I looked it up. It looks interesting enough to try out.

I tried to do this but I was terrified to drop a stitch on this already massive blanket I’m making so I went back to my cable needle. I like this technique though. I might do this on a smaller scale project in the future. Thanks for sharing this tip!

It can be a little scary at first. I would definitely try it with a smaller project you aren't nervous about, and starting with the 1x1 helps because it's just a little less to keep an eye on. Do try it though, because it will speed you up like crazy 💖

Still in the "resisting needle-less cables" camp. But my muscle memory with the cable needle feels fast enough. Doing another pair of mittens with cables & handspun. Just the thumbs left ... worst part!

I can relate. I was there. I thought I was fast, but now I can rip across a row that's all cabled in no time. But, I respect the resistance!

Oh I am going have try this. I spend more time looking for my cable needles.

I have lost so many, we have joked about it! And when we moved, several fell out of my favorite chair, and we've found them in the car under seats and stuff. It's just so nice.

I don't find using a cable needle takes much more time and I found not using one to be way too fiddly for me. You did a great job of demonstrating it.
I'm wondering if it is easier to do this technique when knitting continental. I have a sensory issue with yarn running through my left finger, so I don't knit continental.

I learned to knit English style and did that until I was about 20ish, so I have done both. I don't think it would be any different, since this is just rearranging the stitches without knitting anything until you're done.

I have a Daisy Mae that licks me like that. What would we do without fur children?

I hate to think what I'd do without them!
