RE: PAUSING, EXPRESSIONS & AIR-INSTRUMENTS:
Please be mindful that we will pause (we prefer to react in the moment & to avoid copyright strike), we will react with enthusiasm, smiles, tears, conversation, exchanged looks and air-instruments. We are expressive by nature and are truly very quirky in every sense of the word. This is who we are and this is what we’ve got to offer. We understand it may not be for everyone, but here's to hoping you all enjoy and we absolutely love positive comments and feedback.
RE: LIVE VERSIONS vs STUDIO:
Check out why we haven't uploaded any live versions... yet. They will be coming, we promise!

Moving Pictures is not a concept album but it still should be listened to from beginning to end. It is a masterpiece.
It's a concept album if the concept happens to be greatness. :D
Glad you guys did this one, yes YYZ are the call letters for their home airport in Toronto. The beginning riff is actually YYZ in morse code which is where the idea for the song came from.
I was working as an air traffic controller the first time I heard this and because of my line of work, I instantly knew those little facts. To add, navigational beacons tied to specific locations actually broadcast the 3-letter identifier in Morse code over the beacon's frequency. So, if you have a VHF radio and tune it to the Toronto vortac, you will year that opening riff in beeps.
Riff.*
@@nedrini1387 Thanks :)
a song from a simple....signal.
That's cool - I never knew that. Thanks.
You have to do the live in Rio yyz version! The crowd is together humming the” instrumental “! Amazing! Trust me!😉👍
You have just heard 3 master musicians smashing it! Now see it live from Rush live in Rio. Awesome!
I'm franco-american and I've always said YYZ, not Zed..lol. When you do get a chance to see the live version, make sure it's the one in Rio. The crowd is amazing!!
Yes, us non-Canadians have the freewill to pronounce it our way YYZ not YYZed 🤣🤣🤣
You would be surprised how many Canadians use the American "zee" and Canadian "zed" interchangeably because of influence from Seasame Street and also because of the natural rhyming pattern of the "abc" song. It's not a hard rule here as some think.
Alex commented once in an interview years ago, that Canada was moving towards “zee”, and even teaching it that way in schools, to which Geddy replied, “I’m moving.”
Vous avez raison, la version live est tellement meilleure!
Makes me think of when Pink Floyd used "company zee" instead of Zed for the rhyme scheme in "When the Tigers Broke Free"
This song is pure energy with these guys killing it!!!!
Three separate solo pieces put together under the idea derived from syncopated cadence of an airport YYZen call sign
The "Exit Stage Left" version of this song is the best.
The version I saw in person is the best. 😁
I definitely agree....I wish there were an actual video of it, as Neil's solo in it is spectacular.
Live in Rio would like a word :P
tragically no video for the ESL version - not sure - I have heard that something happened to the master tapes - lost or damaged?
That's the version I heard the song for the first time!
Glad you're reacting to the studio version first. It's usually best to hear the studio version and then check out some live performances.
There is one live performance though that you should check out and you don't need to listen to the studio version first, and that performance is GFR Inside Looking Out - Live from 1969. It's one of the best live performances on TH-cam that I've ever seen.
I assure you that you'll both love it.
Absolutely
Oh yeah, absolutely agree. I’d never seen that Grand Funk live clip until I watched Jamal aka Jamel react (he’s fun to watch too):

I was 15 years old when the Moving Pictures album came out. It was my first time hearing them and I was blown away. I have been a fan ever since. I seen them live twice on the Test for Echo and Snakes and Arrows tour. It was incredible. Greatest band of all time. 3 incredible musician's. RIP Neil. Greatest drummer and lyricist ever. Enjoy the ride. You will not be disappointed. Looking forward to your upcoming reactions of this incredible trio.
Seen Rush in concert 127 times. 2112 my first concert.
If you listen to this song & dont shake your ass, you don’t gotta an ass! This shizzzz is FONKY AF! That’s sum fonk up in hurrrr!!!!! Straight up!!! Bad asss!!! I’m obsessed !ma listen to this shiz at the gym yuh!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏👽👽👽👽🛸🛸🛸🛸🛸🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵
When Rush played for the first time here in Brazil, we all in the audience, accompanied YYZ singing all his variations. This can be seen and heard on the official album and DVD of the band "Rush in Rio". Thank you friends and keep showing songs from the great Rush. 🇧🇷
The thing about requesting the live in Rio version on video isn't what they play as much as it has one of the most enthusiastic crowd responses you'll ever see to an instrumental song.
Exactly.
I was there and sang YYZ with other 40.000 crazy brothers!
RUSH FOREVER! check Necromancer from Caress of Steel
YYZ started out as a playful rehearsal jam between Ged and Neil. It was up to Alex to hang some ornamentation on it. BRILLIANT PIECE OF MUSIC!
La Villa Strangiato is a symphonic piece of music for an instrumental. YYZ is when a hard rock prog band creates a more jam session of a song and just blister it.
More Rush please!!!! As you're loving the Moving Pictures Album how about the last track "Vital Signs"?
I think we would definitely be seeing air drumming 😃
Back in the 80's my friend and his 2 buddies played this song for our high school talent concert.
They won first prize.
Still legendary to this day..
Rush the band musicians listen to on their days off.
I listen to them every day...NO DAYS OFF.
I've heard that said about Steely Dan more than any other band
@@alrivers2297 "Steely Dan is your favorite band's favorite band."
This was the song that led me to Rush. I had the tab for this in one of my guitar magazines (pre-internet days, that’s how you got good sheet music). I was taking lessons from a guy who would record songs I was working on onto a cassette. I asked him if he had YYZ because I wanted to hear what it sounded like. When I listened to it and read along with the music, I said oh hell no - no way I’m playing that! I was blown away, but it was beyond my skills at the time. The instructor also had recorded the next track after YYZ, too, which was Limelight. Now that was a lot more accessible, and I started having him teach me to play that one. Been a huge fan ever since. My suggestion for a song is A Farewell to Kings. Alex does a nice classical intro, and Neil with a glockenspiel, lol. Cheers!
I believe the instrumental called Where's My Thing is played around the bass as the main focus Geddy goes off.
Great reaction, as usual! I wanted to tell you this for quite a while: I listen to a lot of reaction channel and the sound quality of your channel is top tier. Good job!
Love seeing the younger generation appreciating classic rock, pretty much how I was blown away first time listening to them. Yes & Rush my Favs. Thank you Lex & Nick
Agreed, but this is not classic rock, this is Rush. Often imitated, never replicated.
Love this song and your reaction! I used to be a pilot, and when flying close enough to Toronto, I’d tune the YYZ frequency and listen to the Morse code (it’s the same as the opening rhythm), and would start to “educate” the other pilot on how great of a band Rush is! That’s how I would introduce them to this band. True story! 😁
Great story!
Fantastic.
Check out the Rio performance when you get a chance - trust me
It's pronounced YYZed because Rush are a Canadian band, and the letter Z is pronounced "Zed" in Canada and in other English-speaking nations outside the USA.
I get the feeling that on TH-cam, it may be a shocking reminder for some that English is actually used as a first language outside the United States! In any case, it's a great instrumental from a truly great band.
It is my opinion that in the US it is OK to pronounce it YYZ. They are just letters and our pronunciation is just 'Z'. I have all the respect in the world for Rush, but it ends at pronouncing letters differently in the US just because the band is Canadian.
@@BalokLives I agree that you can pronounce it YYZee if you're American. I was only countering the argument made by Lex that it's pronounced YYZed because those are the call letters of the airport in Toronto. But that's not the fundamental reason ... the only reasonable argument for pronouncing it YYZed is because that's how it's pronounced in Canada. Has nothing to do with the official name of the airport.
@@BalokLives It's not a matter of letter pronunciation as it is a song title mispronunciation. The song is pronounced zed, and should be pronounced as such no matter where one lives.
It is also pronounced "zed", because in radio communication, particularly in the Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) world, or in the military, "zed" is the phonetic for the letter z, when AM/FM or Single Sideband is used. Oftentimes, either "zed" or "zulu" is used phonetically. RUSH probably played this up in pronouncing the title of this song, precisely because international morse code was used in the opening instruments to spell out "YYZ". Amazing, huh?
YYZ is really a secret code for THAT BASS!!!!
I think the vast majority of comments on your channel are positive because you are an authentic couple and your subscribers can feel it.
Hi Nick N Lex, I was in 10th grade when this album came out and was really blown away when I had my first listen. Great reaction and Keep up the good work. "KEEP MUSIC ALIVE".
Yes, Alex himself has stated in earlier interviews shortly after Moving Pictures’ release that he was a big fan of Holdsworth and that the solo in YYZ was influenced and an homage of sorts to and in the style of Allan Holdsworth.
Love watching you two! You should strongly consider reacting to ALL Rush songs in chronological order from start to finish to fully get and understand their masterful progression from bar rock band to progressive rock instrument-master overlords to songwriting geniuses.
Well said
I LOVE RUSH!!! RIP Neil Peart.
Mystic rhythms from power windows
YES!!!!! back to the awesomeness of Rush. This is YYZ our airport here in Toronto their hometown!!!!! The three masters!!!! The reason we keep talkin about the live version is you have to see it to believe it , your eyes can't keep up either. My Hubby has been talkin about your headphones you look pro now lolol.
Fun fact...the building on the cover of "Moving Pictures" is Toronto's former city hall...now a courthouse.
Great Stuff ! It’s like listening with friends, having two authentic reactors trading thoughts, especially with Nick a guitar player, reminds me of days past ! We would air play drums etc, discuss, have different opinions, immerse in the music for hours, we didn’t have so many distractions or obligations on our time 👍 I really enjoy you guys !
oh I love this song...so glad you loved it too...I only discovered this song myself last year...heard it on our classic rock station...
The live version of this song from 2002 SARS concert is awesome!! They performed in front of 500,000 fans in their hometown of Toronto!!
Love the songs you guys choose! Makes for a relaxing night after the work day.
YYZ is probably the most; "listened to" songs from RUSH, by myself! The "Rio live" version, the audience is phenomenal!!
Getty Lee on bass guitar, plays the background foot pedals of keyboard with his feet!! Wow!!
Thank you!
It's always good to see you react to great music.
Have a great weekend!
Watched this song live back in 1981 at The Fabulous Forum in Ingelwood Ca. Do you guys know that Neal Peart is the most air drummed drummer ever?😂 That is my favorite album!!
The guy already knew the song. I'll take the girl reaction.
Awesome. Nick you crack me up when you airband the bass... I so do the same. Its great that you both pick out the instruments and analyze.
They are amazing when Rush played this song live!
Love it, love it, love it! Great song. There's no doubt you will absolutely enjoy it. Get back to slapping the bass, Lex!
I'm glad you enjoyed this. I'm a huge Rush fan and think now you two are as well ;-) I'm a little sad you will never get the chance to see them perform live. I have seen a lot of great shows over the years and theirs were among the best! I'm hoping they do a tribute tour with Yoyoka Soma filling in for Neil. Are you familiar with this young lady? If not, you might want to check her out.
Power Windows full listen through on a weekend as a live stream!!! So fun watching you guys get further into Rush. You will notice and love the style change on Power Windows and how they changed their sound to match the times.
There are some who say the craziness of the beginning is the mad dash thru the airport, and the soaring bridge is the joy of flight until you land and have to navigate the airport again at the end. I like to imagine the last stanza as arriving to your house and closing the door after a long trip.
It fits to me!
Subdivisions .... You will LOVE it . It hits home . The music and lyrics are special to anyone as a teen.
Love your reactions! This song perfectly shows how integral each musician is to the performance. So, you know, a typical Rush song. My friends often ask me what my favorite Rush song is, and I just ask them "which one is playing now?"😁
Can’t wait till you get to the Live From Rio. As fun watching them play as hearing them and the crowd is HUGE!!
And when you listen to the live version, do the one in Rio....the crowd (90,000+) goes insane and SINGS the music!! Awesome!!
Another great Rush reaction. Keep them coming. They had knack for putting high quality songs at the end of their albums. I refer to them as "last ones". You've done a few already (Natural Science and La Villa), but please consider more such as Vital Signs, Between the Wheels, Available Light, and Countdown.
The official live version from Exit Stage Left is crazy and includes a mind-blowing drum solo.
YYZ was one of 7 Grammy Nominations Rush has received throughout their musical career.
La villa strangiato , YYZ 👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋 gracias amigos 🇦🇷
Awesome instrumental! The into being Morse code is cool but listen to the very end, the last several notes. It's a nod to one of their favorite shows, "Twilight Zone". It ends the way the show ends. Too damn cool! Keep Rocking amigos!!! ✌🏻🤘🏻
They each do their own little solo!
There are so many more great Rush songs for you to hear. "Spirit of Radio", "Xanadu", "Free Will", "Jacob's Ladder", ""Closer to the Heart", Analog Kid", "Anthem", ...
Troy here in Alaska! Love you All love this old school, classic rock! You all rock.
you 2 are great! I've been on the Rush journey for about 40 years now. Best band ever.
YYZ took me like 5 months to learn, it's the Rush's instrumental master piece with La Villa Strangiato and a fun fact about the song is that this was firstly thought for drums and bass, and the album version actually was recorded by Neil and Geddy, then Alex was recorded
Thank you for holding back on the songs; it is great to see your first impressions. I've watched almost all of your RUSH ones now and I'm keen to see how you react to the others. I don't really have a recommendation for a 'next RUSH song' - like you've already noted; pick any album, pick any song, and you'll be good to go.
I am enjoying your reaction videos. I subscribed a couple of days ago. Your choice of songs is great. YYZ - had it on vinyl in 1981!!!
After this, you’re going to enjoy the Live in Rio version! Especially the crowd.
Alan Holdsworth was one of the great joys of my life. Listening to his music, and seeing him live brought me so much happiness and contentment since I was 15. I'm 61 now. Alan Holdsworth was called back to the Gods. He never was truly human. He was an alien sent here to show us possibilities. Sonic possibilities. Now I'm choked up. Thank you guys for loving this music so much. You both have a passion and keen understanding of what you're experiencing. That's beautiful. 🎼🎵🎶🎸🖖
YYZ was on their luggage tags and they were happy to be home in Toronto.
LOL! Alex your love for Geddy's bass is well shared. AND YOU MENTIONED STEVE HARRIS! Another guy i greatly admire!
I love the reaction videos you guys make. God i feel young again everytime after watching and assured that with souls like you 2, this music will never die.
Rush es increíble gracias chicos desde Argentina
Not only is it crucial for you to get back to the bass but also I see that you have experienced some of the library of the band Yes. Chris Squire on bass was one of Rush Geddy Lee’s biggest influences. Know if you’ve done the song roundabout yet, but that is a must.
First heard Rush in 1979 with Hemispheres at a college party. Within 3 weeks I had every album and thus began the soundtrack to my life. I remember every new album that came out, where I bought it and my reaction to the first listen. My kids are Rush fans and even came with me to the 2015 show in Bristow Va. I saw them 23 times and I so miss Neil! His lyrics are thoughtful and are subjects as deep as religion, individualism, the Cold War, and the music industry. Love YYZ and Moving pictures. But my all time fav song by Rush is Xanadu and I recommend you both react to that song. You both do a great job, watching the joy reminds me of all my Rush experiences! I also loved your Yes and ELP reactions. Take care!
probably someone has mentioned this but YYZ is the airport code for Toronto their hometown. they said it always made them happy to see it as they were coming home. Great reaction and cool videos - love to see these live - as well as The Beatles rooftop 'Don't Let Me Down',,,,
The Rush rabbit hole is so deep. I can't wait for more. And I can't til the live videos
In one interview it was said that YYZ started out as a planned bass and drums thing. Then Alex started messing around with some guitar bits and Geddy and Niel loved what he was doing so the bass and drums idea went out the window.
So cool to watch someone hear this for the first time! Check out the YYZ drum cover by Yoyoka. She was 10 at the time.
You two are amazing. You're so appreciative of the music. As a lifelong Rush fan, I enjoy seeing your enthusiasm and wish I was hearing this music for the first time. But like a fine wine their music ages with complexity. May I recommend Cygnus X-1 Book II Hemispheres?
I was very lucky to see Yoyoka play at a small venue last February in Sunnyvale, CA. I was really hoping to hear YYZ and she did not disappoint! Jeff Beck had recently passed away, so she closed with Led Boots as a tribute. She also played Sparkling, an original prog rock instrumental that would make a very cool reaction. You might also enjoy her playing jazz fusion with the Ken Okada Group on their album Square One. Pretty amazing stuff when you consider she's the same age Neil was when he started taking lessons.
Please make reaction to Diana Ankudinova!
Diana’s a contralto gifted with naturally occurring polyphonic overtones.
Diana's voice is like a rainbow of colors now and there's a pot of gold that's the gift at the end of the rainbow, and the rainbows being the various tones that and qualities that she has to offer through the song. Diana's polyphonic overtone sounding is indescribable happiness, delight and goosebumps. To perform all this with a contralto chest register, combining with a mixed and head register, ending each phrase with his own unforgettable yodeling technique, no one is able to perform songs, as Diana does.

Yes! One of my faves, what a track! What a rhythm 🎵. Love that are you becoming fans 🤪
I saw Rush during this tour for M.P.
1981 Anaheim Convention Center

I was 16 when this was released, bought the vinyl at a grocery store near my high school. I must have listened side 1 of this album daily for several weeks before exploring side 2. YYZ was the 3rd track of 4 on side 1. This album seemed very mature to me and I felt very important listening to it, although I pretty much had no idea what any of the songs were about! Would have never figured 40 years later a cool couple half my age would be able to trigger all these musical memories! Really appreciate what y'all do. I hope to see another Jinjer reaction sometime!!!
Neil Peart said that the sharp "smash/crash" sounds during the guitar solo were from hitting a chair off the wall or door frame in the studio. Cool stuff. Thanks for the reaction!
Going back in their catalog a little bit, the next Rush songs I recommend are A Farewell to Kings, Bastille Day and Anthem.
Thank you, thank you for listening to the studio versions first! Some of the live versions of many bands are not a good indication of the original arrangement.
Love you guys, I really enjoy listening and watching, the music you react to is music from my younger days and it always takes me back to my younger better days, Thank you very much and keep reacting and i'll keep listening, God Bless you two 🙏🙏
You guys are great! You're going to love this!! Banger!!
This album started my Rush obsession in 1981. Playing drums, Neil inspired me beyond words. I have everything they did, saw them 20 times live, met Geddy and Alex, read all of Neil's incredible books, and spent decades waiting for what was next. I miss Rush...
Each member of this band are just wonderful musicians, Geddy is just a demon bassist, Alex is one of the all-time best guitarists out there & Neil (bless him & RIP) was one of the finest drummers. Rush simply are one of the best bands we have had. This is such a fabulous track & loving your reaction to it....so looking forward to you doing a reaction to the Rush in Rio live video, the crowd reaction (& the band obviously reacting to that) is sheer musical/visual pleasure.
Lol nik and alexia I struggled to learn yyz on my guitar ..but did it ...trouble was once I had I couldnt find anyone to play the bess lol !!!!!...big love from the uk guys
Love your sweet smile! And I have loved YYZ and the "Moving Pictures" album for 40-years (since college). Maybe the best RUSH album since A FAREWELL TO KINGS in 1977. Seen them in concert in 1978 for the Hemispheres tour, and in 1982, Madison Square Garden. Awesome is too mild a description of their in-concert performances. Only 3 dudes! RIP Neil Peart. Love the RUSH IN RIO DVD Box-set!
YYZ is the abbreviated version for the ICAO airport identifier CYYZ for Toronto airport. The city where Rush is from.
i love how u guys took nearly 3min explaining why u choose studio version which makes sense and doesnt even need explanation
Great reaction! I agree 100% with always hearing studio versions first. Live are not as good if you don't know the song. Once you do, the live will blow you away.
Sorry I already commented and I never write to anyone online. But seeing how you're delving into Rush a bit I'll make another quick one. You are both really entertaining to watch and listen to. It's like hearing something with a fresh set of ears. For me with Rush the music is just part of it.They're also all really awesome people on top of everything else!
Once I knew that this is inspired by the airport of their hometown, I had a total revelation about.....it was almost a vision!
I could see the 'rush' of the people, the movement of the planes, and the transferring of luggage.
The literal 'hive' of activity outside the terminal....the vehicles, the taxis, the cars, the car rental vans, the hotel shuttles.....just amazing!
😁 Nick with 🥁 air drums! Lex with the air 🎸 Bass! 😍 You guys rock and such a joy to watch! 🍿🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
Great to see your reaction to YYZ. As always Rush delivers! I love their instrumentals because you get to hear just how great Geddy is on the bass, which is sometimes lost due to his singing. In this instrumental, each band member is soloing at the same time and often in different rhythms. Let this inspire you lex to get back to the bass!
8:52 = Correct, he's using a B Phrygian Flat 4 scale in the solo, which is the 3rd mode of the G Harmonic Major Scale. The Harmonic Major scale is one of Allan's 'most useful scales'; a great example can be heard on the solo of his classic 'The Un-Merry-Go-Round' off his seminal 1985 album 'Metal Fatigue'. But the Phrygian flat 4 mode that Alex employs here in his solo has a definite Spanish/East Mediterranean sound, each mode of it has its distinctive flavour, this scale has a simultaneous dark + light sound, w/ the exception of modes I, III and IV, the other modes are minor (have a minor third above their tonic/root) but those are in a way a bit ambiguous in terms of their 'level of brightness', 'bitter sweet' because the other tensions above each mode's main triad make them sound somewhat 'brighter' than expected. A great scale to know and love!
Lex.......get going on that bass! Always so much fun anticipating you guys doing the next Rush reaction vid. Makes my day now!!👍👍
The live version from the Rush in Rio dvd is definitely must watch TV. Even though I have always enjoyed being a part of the crowd at Rush concerts I am pretty uncomfortable when in most crowds. That said I would have given my right arm to be a part of the crowd in the Rio dvd. The energy from that awesome audience hits you through the TV screen. I think they said in the documentary for this dvd a football (soccer) club in Brazil adopted part of YYZ as one of their chants during games. Would love to see that.
I would recommend that you guys check out the live version from the Rush in Rio concert. It's a great take!
Great decision, I feel that the live version can only be appreciated once are familiar with the studio one. This applies pretty much across the board for me.
I haven't played in over 20 years but I don't remember tapping in that solo. Some hammer ons and pull offs in out of it.
So happy you guys enjoyed YYZ awesome reaction. Please react The Song Marathon , Middletown Dreams, grand designs and Emotion Detector ,from power windows album you guys will be blown away. Geddys voice is incredible on that album
As well as his bass playing!...I would only add Big Money to that list...just for the bass alone. Those are some of my favorite Rush songs! POWER WINDOWS is stacked!
Power Windows is awesome!!
