It is the KISS theory. If you are young, and inexperienced, that theory works. With maturity, comes the possibility of more complexity. I liked TD. I hope for the best for him, and any other player or coach, who leaves. Joey was an assistant under a coach who knew what a good defense looks like. I trust him to find someone who shares his philosophy
To be fair, I imagine most media personnel in Lubbock would have to be. You can’t exactly rock the boat a tremendous amount in a small town where your trade really depends on access to information
Lots of respect to McGuire for doing this. It’s not easy to fire someone especially after a decent season. But he’s willing to do what it takes to improve!
This defense was not trending in a solid direction you can be confident in, unfortunately. DeRuyter is a good guy, but this is a performance business, and the metrics this year were abysmal against the pass. I wish things could have been different, but it is what it is.
With this... It makes me wonder if Joey or someone else was calling the defense last week. The playcalling was entirely different, substantially more aggressive than we had been the rest of the season. Blitzing 6, 7 over and over. If you're gonna die, do it glorious on the fury road.
Welp… there was the news we feared all year long. Hudson is transferring. That is without any doubt the biggest failure on the part of this coaching staff in their tenure. 😩
There weren’t many games where our DL outplayed the opponent. Their success was normally driven by sending LBs into the pocket. This exposes the secondary. I also don’t remember Tech consistently maintaining containment. I think it is a combination of discipline and talent. We did have some speed on hand to cover for other shortfalls but not enough to be a competitive defense.
It was the right move also it was the right move on Yates also Plus I'll amid I was wrong about kittley Kittley had one of the best offense in the nation
Somewhat sad with the DeRuyter departure, or at least wondering what could have been. Seemed like the D had an identity we hadn’t seen in a while those first two years. And Cowan/Level, I know yall read these, tell me I was wrong with the Hudson situation. Not happy to be right, but boy I sure was.
Respect for what DeRuyter has done for this team but tough decisions gotta be made if you want to move onto the next step of making the big 12 championship
We better have some rock star lined up. If we don’t I really don’t like this move sacrificing stability for a quick fix. Nobody’s been calling for his head. Nobody thinks he’s a bad DC or the problem. It’s much more likely the personnel.
@ didn’t say we weren’t horrible. I’m saying we had shit/young players. It wasn’t because he’s a bad DC. But sure let’s get some other swinging dick in there I’m sure he will magically fix everything.
Maybe we need to recruit some defensive lineman who can tackle. According to ESPN stats, the first defensive lineman for TT listed on tackles in the big 12 was Quincy. Ledet at 22 tackles. There are 40 defensive linemen in the Big 12 listed ahead of him. Sacks? Haha
I remember when Mike Leach had to fire a defensive coordinator and hired Ruffin McNeill. Ruffie had a very straight forward and simple defensive scheme. Maybe a defensive coordinator with that kind of philosophy would be effective.
Colorado held OSU to 0 points but we gave up 48 points to them. It was time for change at DC. Injuries happen to all teams so that's not an excuse for being statistically terrible.
The frustration is JV Joey selling the D as the “no name defense” going into the season with 22 players who will contribute. Unfortunately it was Rodriguez and nothing else! It’s year 3. Where is all this talent and speed Blanchard and Joey talk about?
Hate it for TD & his family, but I like that Joeys willing to make a tough decision to try and grow the program forward. I’ll be curious if he has his eye on a specific scheme he wants to go to. Teams have recently went to the 3 high safety look like Iowa state runs, & had some success. Sometimes change is just needed to ignite a new hope, doesn’t necessarily mean TD was doing a bad job. Best wishes for him and his family, no doubt he will land on his feet.
Good. Our defense needs a change. I’ve been critical of Kittley in the past but let’s face it the defense has not been good consistently since McGuire has been here. Hopefully we can snatch up a good coordinator to replace to DeRuyter.
I really don’t like this firing… the more I think about it I really like TD. Hope we make a great hire to replace. Would love to see us snag an NFL assistant.
Really liked him. Got the sense for Baylor that McGuire meddled a bit in the scheme before that game. So makes me wonder why the D could only have moments but not consistency. Hopefully new scheme for 2025 doesn’t set us back more instead of propel us forward with consistency.
I could see McGuire meddling in the sense of, "you've gotta do it better, what if..." Personally, I think McGuire meddled in a big way vs WVU. The playcalling seemed different. Much more aggressive bringing 6 or 7. We'll see who he picks. Joey wants turnovers and negative plays, so that's what he's gonna look for.
@@kayakyakyakr during the TCU game The TV announcers said something really interesting. They said Baskerville told McGuire after losing to Baylor to "let DuRyter call his plays" cause they can execute it. I find that interesting. Does that mean McGuire stepped in on Baylor and had them change the defense? Of course TV announcers can definitely say things different than the players actually said it. But I did notice it when it popped up. We put more pressure on QB vs TCU but gave up big plays again that precipitated the loss.
@@JasonBaumgardner I heard that differently. The way Joey told it in his press conference was that Baskerville told Joey to bring the blitz and let the secondary try to cover. Perhaps there's some truth to that: after the disaster to start the season, Joey was saying to simplify, which worked vs Arizona, but they took too far vs Baylor
The defense was never able to get home to the opposing QB. I don’t care how talented your secondary is, if you have no pressure on the QB, you will get scorched! And what I see is lack of DE talent. Stop trying to recruit big guys that are slow with no bend. Tech needs twitchy bendy guys to get sacks and pressure. I know Joey is all about Big guys but it’s not working.
I been telling yall all year. Dc this year. Offense position coaches next year. Joey not daddys boy the last. Unless we buy the used car for good and put up with the pitch every year on our way to the espn minor leagues called the mountain west. Cliff 2.0
@ look at kl iffs tenure. Honeymoon years. Followed by firing the best position coaches on offense. Next year morris the oc magically goes to incarnate wors( right). Then the last hear they finally fired kliff. We will follow that template with the exception of kittleys daddy protecting him from any harm.

I think Level may be too close to the forest at times.
Why's that?
Disagree. If you want to learn about the forest, you should be talking to a tree.
To be fair, I imagine most media personnel in Lubbock would have to be. You can’t exactly rock the boat a tremendous amount in a small town where your trade really depends on access to information
I like him as a person, so I won't say anything disparaging. That's the status quo, right? I'll follow suit.
@lanceowens962 Agree completely! Have never been a fan... He comes accross as a narcissist and a know it all.... "Ask Level" haahaa what a joke!
Lots of respect to McGuire for doing this. It’s not easy to fire someone especially after a decent season. But he’s willing to do what it takes to improve!
Bummer. I really liked Tim. I wish him the best.
“They’re back there starting a new life.” 😂😂 that one got me Casey. Lolol
This defense was not trending in a solid direction you can be confident in, unfortunately. DeRuyter is a good guy, but this is a performance business, and the metrics this year were abysmal against the pass. I wish things could have been different, but it is what it is.
Gosh dang it,
I know not everybody shared my sentiment but I really wanted to keep him
Me too
I wanted him to succeed, but I'm not surprised by this.
Coming from the “insider” guy that say “Hudson is happy at Tech and he wouldn’t be leaving”. He proceeds to get in the portal day one. SMH
Been saying this would happen since week one on here lol. I can’t wait for the spin zone on this one.
Loving that hoodie Mr. Level

ship out kittley too
It was the right move also it was the right move on Yates also

The problem for me was that we could bring pressure, or we could cover. We rarely did both.
Long time coming.

Breaking News! Wow!
Respect for what DeRuyter has done for this team but tough decisions gotta be made if you want to move onto the next step of making the big 12 championship
Yessss! Sorry, it had to be done. Who of us in the real world would have a job if we did it that poorly?
We better have some rock star lined up. If we don’t I really don’t like this move sacrificing stability for a quick fix. Nobody’s been calling for his head. Nobody thinks he’s a bad DC or the problem. It’s much more likely the personnel.
I disagree totally. Way too passive on defense. Horrible on pass defense and never any kind of pass rush.
@ didn’t say we weren’t horrible. I’m saying we had shit/young players. It wasn’t because he’s a bad DC. But sure let’s get some other swinging dick in there I’m sure he will magically fix everything.
Sadly the writing was on the wall. Best of luck to him and his family.
Lighter note, sharp hoodie Level. Adidas got the Tech red right. Under armour was off a couple of shades.

131 in passing d is a little more than just being inconsistent. lol love the show but yeah the d has been historicly bad
Indeed.
This^^^^^

Gary Patterson? 🤔👀
That would be cool but it would never happen
I would love this.
It seems to me that over the years, the more sophisticated the defense the worse it is.
Mac Brown just got fired it would be cool to see him as DC in Lubbock
Zach Arnett for DC
lol, he uses the 3-3-5. Tech will never have the talent for that.
Good. Our defense needs a change. I’ve been critical of Kittley in the past but let’s face it the defense has not been good consistently since McGuire has been here. Hopefully we can snatch up a good coordinator to replace to DeRuyter.
When has our defense been consistently good since Zack Thomas left? I'm not arguing, just curious.
What’s up Daileas? How’s life

16:14...Doesn't Tech have a recruiting COORDINATOR??:?
This has been on my mind a lot lately
Need someone with strong recruiting for D. Tim is an awesome guy but it just wasn’t happening.
Isn’t McGuire a defensive coach?
I hate the unknowns…
Colorado pro style offense destroyed all teams that runs a 3/3/5 ..how in the world do you get away with using 3 unathletic defensive tackles omg ..
Naw man he needed to go
You have to bring in some hogs like in the SEC. You can't be a "friend" to your guys. Defense wins games by stopping the other team from scoring.
Had to be done!

You may be the dumbest person on this app and that’s hard to accomplish.
