I love Barrett trail but we usually are wheeling it. The views are so pretty~Did you know that their is a plane crash up there about a mile from the campsite? That bear was a so big boy! Another fun video to watch!
PHARRAOH Well, I'm a side sleeper, so I've never been a hammock guy. For the desolation area, I think a tent is the way to go. There are plenty of nice lakes above the tree line.
Stari Night I was very briefly scared when I though he had seen me, but continued to move in my direction. But as soon as he really recognized me as something that wasn't just scenery, he turned and ran like a frightened kitten. It absolutely MADE the trip for me. He was a real beauty! Thanks for watching!
Stari Night Every bear I had ever seen ran for it's life when it saw me (except the time I had to scare one away from our food - that was just youthful immorality/stupidity), but if you saw the raw video of this bear encounter at full speed, you'd see that I held the camera very steady until the bear turned and ran - at that point my bloodstream was FULL of adrenaline and the camera shook like crazy - edited out, of course...
cool video man ! me and some buddys just did barret in toyotas haha , not so bad if ya know whats up ! we hiked up to lawrence ,then east up to lake #9 and top lake above barret ! some nice veiws from up there !
+Dan zoller Hey, glad you enjoyed it. Top Lake is one of my favorites, but I promise myself to not go off trail when I'm alone. Glad you and your toyota made it - I talked to a guy on the trail in Desolation recently that said that when he did it, it took 14 hours!
Doing a 4 day hike starting next Wed to Schmidel and wanted to try to see if Lawrence was doable on the way or way back. Camping at Schmidel and exploring the other lakes. Thanks for the response!
Thank you for sharing this fine video my friend. I really enjoyed it. Take care out there and be safe.

The Southwest Backpacker YAY! My first bit of feedback - and from one of the top hiking vid producers at that! Thanks for the kind words.
that's a nice area. If you were to return, would you tent camp or hammock camp? The bears always add magic to the trek. cheers
Huge bear..Scary *o_0*

+SacWildlife oh cool ! it only taks us 2 1/2 hrs to 3 ! not to bad ,yeah not to smart to leave the trail by ur self.
I hope all is good. I was wondering if you can get to Lake Schmidell from Lawrence Lake? Hike On!
Look at the map - you can go up to Lake #3 and hop over the ridge near upper Leland Lake - then down to Schmidell. I did that once a long time ago.

didnt know there were grizz in desolation...
There aren't - if there were still grizzlies in california, i would NOT have been whipping out my camera at the first glimpse of a bear.
