Like a 2 way war that slowly turns into just trying to survive the flood onslaught as they consume all of the fallen soldiers.
I think that other than the scalpel simile, there's also the fact that Spartans have a reputation of being out-and-out heroes akin to Captain America. Naturally, ONI wouldn't want to jeopardize this reputation by risking sending a spartan on a classified mission that would earn public ire and rebellion if they were to be made public, *doubly* so if the mission involves assassinating figures that ONI deems as "unsavory".

I know from “Shadows of Reach” that there were still ODSTs stationed on Infinity at the time. They’re likely still around because it’s cheaper and easier to train and equip them than it is to train and equip a Spartan.
Great video. I love ODST and always have. Theyre such a cool and iconic part of Halo. Honestly what I've always wanted to see is an ODST themed turn-based tactical like XCOM
Bruh, how could you not mention the man, the myth, the legend himself - Michael Baird? Dude singlehandedly took on a covenant strike force that commandeered his destroyer, and stopped them from discovering Earth. He's not just an ODST, he's the most badass non-augmented human in Halo. CCMM
my favorite helmet to wear in any of the halos that have them is the ODST helmet, its just cool to have that spartan/ODST hybrid and I think it would be cool to see a another story with spartan and ODSTs
Thing I love about the ODSTs is that IRL if we can develop the tech to make it possible and we ever get space warships, they’re a logical strategy, you got a ship in the sky, just fly above the enemy and drop down units. Paratroopers taken to an insane degree.
With the mass production of Spartans via the Spartan-IV program it seems that ODSTs became more of a support role for Spartan units or like becoming the Tier 2 SF units. Spartans became the Tier 1 unit like Delta, DEVGRU, SAS or Spetsnaz with doing dangerous jobs, while ODSTs became Tier 2 units like Force Recon, Airbone Pathfinders, Army Rangers and etc.
Personally I've always seen ODSTs as mini Spartans, and love their representation within the Spartan community. And I feel that that the Spartan IV program was a way to reintroduce the ODSTs in a new light, having dedicated Spartan IV ODST teams or even regiments. I've been running ODST armor since Halo 3. Easily my favorite chunk of Lore.
I've always been a huge fan of the ODST's and I've always loved the ODST's more than the Spartans. My very first Halo game was ODST as well!. Anytime we get more ODST action or content, I'm always excited to see it.
I believe in Halo First Strike that John once stated that take away augmentations and armour there wasn’t a great deal of difference between an ODST and a Spartan. And I think this is true. I think there’s some truth to the ODST view of Spartans as the ones who took all the glory while they contributed highly to the war effort which when compared to the Spartans is largely unrecognised. Which is why it frustrates me that when we were told that the best went to become SIVs this was completely brushed over and the SIVs at least in the beginning came off as highly underwhelming especially considering they’re supposed be ex ODSTs.
I wonder if the resentment between the 2 will ever disappear. Most of the hatred the ODSTs have toward Spartans was due to ONI, sending ODSTs to indirectly get them to fight John to test out his augmented body and overflooding the media with propaganda involving Spartans, greatly overshadowing the achievements and sacrifices of the ODSTs
@@joelmanning249 well yeah. It's hard to get it away when Spartans still take most of the spotlight from the ODST, undermining their contribution. But indeed it got lessened due to the Spartan IVs being usually experienced ODSTs who were likely worthy of being selected
@@granmastersword yeah, the oni lapdog ODSTS got bodied and whined about it. Sucks that that was a lot of ODSTs first impression of Spartans. A few of their own bad apples spoiled the relationship the two could’ve had. We see it happen anyway with Chief when he meets some rad ODSTs
Personaly I never felt that the Spartan 4s replaced the ODSTs. ODSTs are special ops troopers, dropped into hot zones to work sabotage, while Spartan 4s were shock troopers, flew in on Pelicans and made sure to draw in the fire. Honestly I thought they complement each other. Spartan 4s can draw the fire and attention of the enemy while ODSTs drop in from behind to do massive damage to the enemy from behind
As someone who has only recently got back into Halo after Halo 5 left me... Uninterested in the series for lack of a better term despite absolutely adoring every Halo prior to it(Yes even 4, hell part of me likes 4 more than Reach even if Reach has better multiplayer), finding this channel and playing thru the MCC with a good friend reignited my love for this series. Thank you for this
Is there room for ODSTs in Infinite? Certainly on the ring, but there aren't exactly anymore orbiting platforms from which to drop from anymore, right? lol.. Great breakdown as always! This isn't really the place, but I still don't understand why everyone wants an ODST battle royale mode. Yes, they drop out of the sky, but why would they be killing each other? And how would that be any different from any other BR mode? A COD Warzone with slightly future weapons? An Apex without all the abilities and movement? I will continue to push my fringe proposal of a grunt battle royale lol.. The first FPS where you waddle..
any military worth their salt would make sure have few if not several special forces in their military. Spartans & Odsts being the main faces of the unsc both having place in the military. Spartans are far more expensive so it would be easier to improve the equipment the odsts have in my opinion. Especailly post-war where they could incoperate more of spartan armor technology iunto teh odsts armor. Perhaps even getting their own shields at some point too and slightly more durable armor which help increase the survival rate.
I played Halo for the first time on MCC when it was released on pc and both Reach and ODST are my favorite games. I love ODST bc you are just a nameless human which is different than being the Master Chief or Noble 6 even
No matter how many super soldiers are needed or made, it always ends up coming down to just us, it will always come down to us, from start to finish, the grunts on the ground, the men and women with only the will to fight, we will always be the ones you will want when taking the fight headlong at the enemy, when either a world is taken or defended it's always on us!
whenever i played Halo:Reach i only ever used the ODST armor, i dont think i ever even tried to get high enough for the other armors, the ODST outfit always looked the best imo
I think another thing to consider about ODST's is that they are equal to Paratrooper divisions. The US roughly has about 200 divisions with 8 of them being paratroopers. It would make sense in equal context that in the UNSC, they would be very rare.
Very much based on the paratroopers of ww2. Those were the real force to be reckon with and very much the peak of military might. Knowing fully well that they are to be dropped into combat behind enemy lines surrounded and have to hold out before reinforcements they pretty much have to do all the roles of a grounded unit. Need to be specialised in engineering, infantry combat, sabotage, demolition etc except for piloting and other air force roles. The guts it takes to volunteer into such positions are nothing but respectable
My headcanon is that they are the direct descendants of the original paratroopers from ww2 which then gave birth to the Halo Jumpers in today's modern world where the jumpers "come down from the heavens to make sure the battle goes in the factions favour!" And then the Hell jumpers are the next group jumping "beyond the heavens and falling straight into Hell to take out whatever demons threaten the human civilization!" Has a bit of mythology to it if you ask me and I believe that is welcome when referring to all 3 eras of jumping from the "skies and beyond!"
god If I ever met Lt Mckay in real life I would give her 100 salute. Aside from Buck and Rookie she is one ODST that I respected the most. Without her earth definitely will not survive
If only our UN was actually this level headed and got its priorities straight of uniting humanity, instead of a parliament full of corrupt-crackhead individuals. We could've had a unified and single military faction for humanity.
@@danisrusski6297 "for conflicts between states" sounds like you don't even know why militaries are established and why they were created in the first place. If militaries are for "conflicts" in ur sense then you need to recheck urself lmao
There is always going to be such a thing as cost and numbers, and until spartans can be so mass produced they replace even marines there will always be a place for elite non augmented forces. Wish we saw more of them in recent media. Spartans may be the tip of the spear but that shaft to back it up is just as important.
I think that a ODST and Marines Battle Royale built from the ground up with the full Halo sandbox would be great. That, and a Flood horror story that stars that guy that first tried to retrieve the index while it also follows Sgt Johnson's ordeal with the Flood when Keys gets taken. It would be a great excuse to play as Johnson. I miss him...
I imagine for Americans at least it's easy to think of it like this. Say Super Soldiers became a real thing. You would still have the Rangers, SEALs, Green Berets, Delta Force etc. These organisations are massive and have useful everyday functions. You can also consider the $$$ factor. One Spartan probably costs more than a full squad or platoon of ODST's. Not every situation calls for the nuclear option.
The odst should be a thing in infinite, like call em in, and people in a queue can join in and drop on a match as odsts... these are the gameplay ideas they need....
The problem with ODST’s is the cost factor compared to the performance of Spartans. It doesn’t cost that much more to create 4th Gen Spartans. Considering the influx of Spartans now, the economy of scale factor drives the cost down so much you can get 10x the result for only 2x the cost of a ODST. They have a great history to them and hopefully that history is used in the Spartan training programs going forward in the lore
Quick correction: ODSTs first appear in "Halo: The Fall of Reach", making them as connected to the franchise as Spartans from day 1.

It's not hell it's "heck" we need to keep this family friendly guys. Heck jumpers.
LOL
Hope I'm alive to see ODST's become a reality. We got most of the technology needed we just need a way to make it more cost effective.
CCMM
Captain Cro-Magnon!
I need some of them rumble drugs he takes! 😂 Took on a whole army!
ODSTs are hardasses for being able to go toe to toe alongside Spartans while using slightly upgraded marine gear and having no genetic modifications
my favorite helmet to wear in any of the halos that have them is the ODST helmet, its just cool to have that spartan/ODST hybrid and I think it would be cool to see a another story with spartan and ODSTs
Loved learning more about the ODSTs!!
A feature film or series following an elite ODST unit in the covenant war or even counter insurrection operations would be freaking sick.
I love ODST
Hell jumpers
ODSTs when they drop are like bombs too and in mass numbers can probably do a lotta damage before physically engaging in battle
I think that the UNSC Infinity being the flagship replaced the ODSTs with Spartans but that would be too impractical for the rest of the fleet
5:03
Not to say it would be soft, but H2A failed to include the retro rockets that make the impact survivable.
I've always been a huge fan of the ODST's and I've always loved the ODST's more than the Spartans. My very first Halo game was ODST as well!. Anytime we get more ODST action or content, I'm always excited to see it.
that ODST ost hit different . The TH-cam page with the hours long upload of it has some of the most wholesome comments on that page
@@granmastersword Well its lessened cause of SPARTAN IV but hasn't gone away
@@joelmanning249 well yeah. It's hard to get it away when Spartans still take most of the spotlight from the ODST, undermining their contribution. But indeed it got lessened due to the Spartan IVs being usually experienced ODSTs who were likely worthy of being selected
@@granmastersword yeah, the oni lapdog ODSTS got bodied and whined about it. Sucks that that was a lot of ODSTs first impression of Spartans. A few of their own bad apples spoiled the relationship the two could’ve had. We see it happen anyway with Chief when he meets some rad ODSTs
Excellent history!! 👏 Now I wish 343 would give us some new ODST games!
Thank you for this
I always loved odst the game was a amazing switch up from the normal halo games
If you look at the shoulder patch of certain marines in CE you will see the ODST badge. They just don't have the armor.
I love this channel so much. Thank you halo cannon
I remember seeing ODST's in Forward Unto Dawn. I wish you would talk about that.
Dude, missing you and your content already. Best wishes
Grunt Battle Royale is the only acceptable Battle Royale for Halo.
Could make it like it's a training simulation that they do for bragging rights
Jus found your channel an subscribed today my man! Great videos, very well edited an put together. Thanks for the content!
Thank you! Glad you like what you see!
Man this video somehow made odsts even cooler than before
any military worth their salt would make sure have few if not several special forces in their military.
8:52 I just remembered an ODST named Seal who I gave a concussion rifle later in that level (he survived until the end)
The hype is REAL. cant wait!
I played Halo for the first time on MCC when it was released on pc and both Reach and ODST are my favorite games. I love ODST bc you are just a nameless human which is different than being the Master Chief or Noble 6 even
Absolutely loved this video ! Glad to see it came out ok in the end !
Save for that ONE LINE, lol
Swore into the Marine Corps this week. ODST's were a big part of making me want to enlist. I feel like it's just their mindset that I fuck heavy with
Have they made new versions of halo 3 ODST &Halo Reach the way they did with the original halo games?
I love odst aka hell jumper are so cool and having unique weapon like M7S and M6C SOCOM so special force
The fact is ya dont replace the entire army with the navy seals
Excellent work great video on the detail and explain
I think another thing to consider about ODST's is that they are equal to Paratrooper divisions. The US roughly has about 200 divisions with 8 of them being paratroopers. It would make sense in equal context that in the UNSC, they would be very rare.
Well now I need to go back and replay H3 ODST and complete HW2 so I can play the dlc
4:56 Well that's a bit of a terrifying thought. Cooked inside your own pod before you even hit the ground.
I wish I'd included this in there, but this actually does happen in "The Babysitter", on the short episode from "Halo: Legends".
@@HaloCanon Ahhh. That's right. I'd almost forgotten about that.
Then again it's been a while since I've watched Legends.
Was hoping for a Kilo-5 shoutout since they played a pretty significant part in the Covenant civil war.
The Black Daggers are my favorite, also being in my favorite halo book
why do I recognize the photo at 1:44?
ODST are my favorite characters in the halo universe that’s why I always pick the ODST armor in every halo game
Finally a lore video about hotdrop bois
They might be not the polearms of combat we all wanted like the spartans, but the trusty sword we all needed.
My headcanon is that they are the direct descendants of the original paratroopers from ww2 which then gave birth to the Halo Jumpers in today's modern world where the jumpers "come down from the heavens to make sure the battle goes in the factions favour!"
And then the Hell jumpers are the next group jumping "beyond the heavens and falling straight into Hell to take out whatever demons threaten the human civilization!"
Has a bit of mythology to it if you ask me and I believe that is welcome when referring to all 3 eras of jumping from the "skies and beyond!"
Odst: best humanity can offer
Spartan: best science can offer
god If I ever met Lt Mckay in real life I would give her 100 salute.
What do we need a unified military for? If humanity is united, there is no need for militaries as militaries are for conflicts between states
@@danisrusski6297 "for conflicts between states" sounds like you don't even know why militaries are established and why they were created in the first place. If militaries are for "conflicts" in ur sense then you need to recheck urself lmao
Kept closing my eyes on the Halo Legends part
Plus ODSTs had a deep hate for the Spartans but I like both
I imagine for Americans at least it's easy to think of it like this.
"Halo: New Blood" basically makes this exact argument.
Loved the use of infinite warfare I just accepted it as an unofficial halo prequel
Damn even though I have notifications on I didn't see this video until today.
we need more lore about the rainforest wars an event mentioned more than a few times in the books
Would love to see another odst only game but more again the Insurgents and not the covenant
Everybody keeps talking about the we are odst short, but landfall is also badass
The odst should be a thing in infinite, like call em in, and people in a queue can join in and drop on a match as odsts... these are the gameplay ideas they need....
This is the first time I'm hearing that Helljumpers were only 1 particular division of ODSTs...
Hey good work! What is the song you used for the chapter “Beginning of the Odst”? It just sounded really dope
ODSTs are like the Krillins of HALO. “Just” human, but can still keep up with the heavy hitters
Awsome a halo cannon vid....
Oooo a odst vid
It happoned!!!!!!
Funny how the infinity is supposed to have at least 750 ODST personal on board during the 1st battle of Requiem but we never saw them
Iconic elite soldiers of the UNSC without sparten augmentation.
