  • As a species, junipers are some of the most flexible and forgiving trees to begin a bonsai composition. In this breakdown of how to make a bonsai, we walk you through the fundamental steps of front selection, creation of deadwood, setting of structure, and wiring of your pads. This process can be applied to any piece of nursery stock or accessible piece of material to warrant the very best results and provide the backbone for juniper bonsai creation.

The timing of this video is perfect for me. I have a Sargent Juniper that I've been growing from nursery stock for four or five years, and I've been planning to start styling it this year. I had been unsure about what directions I would take with it, but since it looks very similar to the specimen in the video, I now have a lot more ideas and confidence to move ahead. Thank you!

Ryan, I love your videos (I'm a subscriber on Bonsai Mirai, which is awesome!). I still can't wrap my head around how you can do that much work on a juniper in one shot and have it live. I understand that this was an already healthy juniper, but seriously what's your secret?! (Wizard?) I've been sticking to one thing at a time either repot or pruning or wiring or deadwood, and yet I still have a few that still don't make it. Is there a special after care regimen?

Ryan, it'd be very useful to say in each video what date/month/season it is when you perform the work, since the video posting date may not match leaving us guessing when we should apply the concepts to our trees. Thank you for all your videos, I've learned a ton.

I really enjoy your videos they are so informative and you make them easy to understand no matter what level/experience you may have thank you for sharing. Being fairly new to the art of Bonsai, my question is when would you remove the wiring? I would think that those tertiary branches would defiinatley thicken/grow over the growing season, so do I need to keep an eye on them as not to let the wire cut into branch(s)?
