  • As a representation of nature in miniature, kusamono can take on many visual forms and a multitude of approaches to demonstrate the understory vegetation that completes the environmental story of the bonsai and kusamono pairing, aiding in the story telling of the tree.
Witness the microcosm of kusamono and bonsai accents through the eyes of Young Choe, a world renowned kusamono artist. Learning how to create, maintain, and refine these delicate plantings.

I never knew this was a real artform! When I was a teenager I'd go to a large park with woods and wonder why all house plants looked so contrived and unnatural. I used to dig up wild flowers and grass at the park and recreate what I sat and looked at for like 2 hours. I'd plant them in my grandmom's tea cups and basically anything I could smuggle from her kitchen. Seeing that this is a real art form reminded me of all that time I spent as a kid. Thank you much for reintroducing me to something I loved to do 30 years ago!

You can tell that Young was trying to focus on the art of what she was doing and would be sidetracked by constantly having to talk. I know that this is the basic premise of a live video but I would ABSOLUTELY love to see either an ASMR version of this without her being constantly interrupted, or allowing her to talk only when she feels compelled to. Her patience is incredible.

I completely agree. As much as the host probably wanted to learn and pull information from the guest this significantly breaks up her own way of expressing herself and get the job done. Ryan’s constant desire to be the center of attention detracts from what could have been a better video. I’m sorry if that is seen as a rude statement. Perhaps it’s the American vs Japanese cultural differences that are coming to play. I enjoyed the video quite a bit and also agree that the speakers deserves a shot at showing strutting her stuff without interruption.

@@matshagstrom9839 Ryan is a wealth of knowledge and teaches in such a way that is extremely entertaining and concise, but I have to agree with you in regards to Ryan stealing the spotlight. Nobody is perfect, so we have to take that into consideration. This video was an introduction to this art for me and I've since watched many other videos and viewed many sites related to it. It was quick work since this doesn't seem to be remotely as known as bonsai, but I can definitely see it growing in the future. I digress...
Of almost all of the material I've come across on kusamono, she she is probably my favorite. Figures the first person I see doing it ends up being the best in my eye. I greatly hope to see more video of her but without the interruptions. She is in a league of her own and did Ryan a great favor. Ryan may be a great bonsai practitioner, but she is the best in kusamono. She deserves the floor without interruption.

I'm glad to find that there is actually a name for this art. I've been doing terrariums, moss gardens and Kokedamas for years - my materials from the creek and woods behind my property. Never leave our National Arboretum - from your neighbor in Maryland. 🙂

Can you please share the info on The pots and how to reach the creator? Also the name of the plants and spelling? ( especially the first purple flowered plant mentioned.)

Should light, watering and fertilizing requirements also be considered for selecting plant groupings?
