I live in the UK and we have one older Japanese American living here. He was born in internment. He says this song was the first piece of Japanese popular culture to penetrate the States and hearing it requested on the radio regularly in the early/mid 1960s made him feel accepted for the first time. It is a beautiful song in the original, but English speakers will only get how beautiful if they find an English subtitled version (or learn Japanese).
These short commercials, compiled here, were the first shown after a week or so of only "PSA (Public Service Announcements) following the tragedies of 3/11/2011. This song means so much to the Japanese, it was bonding and heartfelt. All the more so as many of these beloved actors, writers, comedians, etc. are NOT known as singers. I can't speak any Japanese yet I feel sad. Not because I can't speak any language but English, but I feel like each language has a great respect and distinct definition of speech. There's passion in their words and I wish I knew what they feel when they sing.
