I agree that adult games are to guys what smutty romance novels are to women. I've been working in this industry for about 6 years now and it's been hands-down the favorite job I've ever had.
I get to work with wonderful artists, have an outlet for my creativity and earn a decent living wage.
The difference between a game like this and just going on the hub is that you get to know and connect to characters. Suddenly there's more emotional attachment to them making the time investment and payoff mean so much more.

In terms of the audience I feel that romance targeted for men is so scarce that the adult game space dominates and resonates with so many because of that scarcity. There's definitely something to be said of the allure of adult content but I find the reason these kinds of games are often heavily narrative focused is due to a desire for something more complex and emotionally driven than something you can find on orange youtube. That and barrier of entry is lower to not need to design levels, mechanics, and physics.

The thing about the lack of open acceptance of adult games is that people still can't see games as anything more than a holdover from a childhood that we refuse to let go of, rather than a legitimate form of media. Women and, many men read erotic novels, watch movies such as 50 Shades of Grey and other examples of media that are more widely accepted.
When we're younger, we watch cartoons, but as we age and our minds mature, we often prefer more mature content. But video games, no matter the age of the target player, will continue to be seen in two different categories. The first is that while games are enjoyed by people of many age groups, non players view it as a childish activity. The other is is an activity that is already stigmatized as a waste of time and a misuse of time for adults, (again by none players.) That being said, the same person who criticizes a gamer for playing an erotic visual novel, yet will turn around and read 50 Shades of Grey and never consider the level of hypocrisy.

Obsessively putting your life into a hobby at the cost of other things (family, job, civic duty) can be detrimental, but simply having a hobby isn't the boogeyman that that type of person makes it out to be. I think it's just bitterness of individuals who don't believe they have any time for any hobbies.

    Alright feckers, it's list time:
Out Of Touch - By far the game I got most emotionally invested into, one of the only times I've seen polyamory done right.
Once in a Lifetime and Eternum (both by same developer) - Hilarious and well written, can't go wrong with starting here
Black Souls 1 and 2 - Honestly I would call black souls 2 the best RPG I've ever played, and I've played a ton of them
Honorable mentions that are still good but are not quite to the level I invested heavily emotionally in them:
Harem Hotel, Lewd Town Adventures, Corrupted Kingdoms, School Of love: Clubs, Lucky paradox and Goddesses' whim are the ones that come to mind.
And lastly, one I don't think I can recommend unless you can ignore morality for the sake of a story, if you play this one for gratification, I don't think you can be saved, but I'll talk about it anyways since I do believe it should be mentioned.
Lessons in Love, is disgusting, obtuse, needlessly verbose, morally reprehensible, emotionally scarring, It locks progression behind obscure puzzles and is extremely disturbing at times.
But... It can be beautiful. Heartfelt, and moving. It helped me realize scars I have possessed since childhood and heal them, if only slightly.
I honestly wish there was a way to skip the adult scenes, for every time they come up I just wanted them to be over.
I only found Lessons in Love because it's at the top of some wiki list for longest video game scripts at 1.9 million words. This number is outdated and it's currently around 3.7 million words, making it almost 3x Homestuck, including the beyond canon books, or almost 4x as long as the whole bible. It is one of the longest works of fiction ever created, and it's only about halfway done.
It took me well over 100 hours to read it all, closer to 200 probably since it was so obtuse in game design.
It's very painful, but given how long it is, the sheer depth to the characterization of everyone in it is some of the most well written I've seen.
I can't recommend it, but I needed somewhere to talk about it, all this time I spent on it, I needed it to be understood.
So in case you do decide to play it anyways, remember, you chose to, you chose that pain. The pain, and the few sparse glimpses of beauty.

H games have genuinely been one of my most important discoveries in recent years. I'd obviously played a few of the big names here and there in the past, but about 2 years ago, I accidentally stumbled across a handful of games that really emotionally resonated with me, and in a lot of cases, has given me more emotionally affecting stories than nearly any other game I've played before.
They've made me think about important topics I'd never even considered in the past, they gave me characters who I've connected with on a really deep level, and because they're adult games, there's no real restrictions on the way they can handle these topics.
A game like Harem Hotel can go from haha, funny harem game with elf girls in the first hour, to 40+ hours later be dealing with topics like what would be required for humanity to accept a new species as sentient, is experimenting on sentient beings morally correct if it saves the majority of that species from being treated as slaves, and legal genocide. It's a game where a character can go from "oh not this stereotypical character trope again" to genuinely making me cry multiple times because of how much of an emotional gut punch their story is. And it can subtly weave an entire 300+ year history into its narrative and have payoffs for those things 20+ hours later.
Lucky Paradox had a mystery to it that was genuinely impossible to stop thinking about while I was playing through it the first time. It had breadcrumbs being laid that made me just lean back in my chair, looking up at the ceiling, and considering all the potential consequences of what that could be hinting at. To put it into context, the last times I had that happen was my first time experiencing Steins;Gate and Virtue's Last Reward.
Corrupted Kingdoms isn't afraid to absolutely demolish the status quo multiple times.
Goddess' Whim has some incredibly witty dialogue that has me constantly smiling every time a new update releases, and is continually widening the scope of the story in a way that feels natural and justified.
Superheroes Suck excellently deals with some topics I'd never considered properly before, and it might have some of the best writing and comedic sense I've ever seen in a visual novel.
And Phoenixes might be one of the most realistic depictions I've seen of how a world of superheroes would actually be, with a group of characters that I genuinely changed who my favourite one was from conversation to conversation.
Some of these aren't just on a list of my favourite H games of all time, they've broken onto my favourite GAMES of all time, period.

From time to time, I go poking around the 'adult' section of Steam to see if there might be something in that vein that is legitimately good. The only other good 'adult' game I've ever played, has been Monster Girl Quest: Paradox, and calling that game 'good,' is a massive disservice. It's better than most mainstream games ever made. I'm being dead serious, it's actually an emotionally gripping epic with the deepest RPG gameplay I've ever seen. I highly, highly recommend it. The only other RPG out there that I think has gameplay depth that is remotely comparable, is Path of Exile, and PoE is a shallow pool compared to the ocean that is MGQP, especially once you get into the Labyrinth of Chaos (think insane postgame super-content). The writing for MGQP is. . . it's something else. Whoever wrote that is just as studied in the occult as I am, maybe more so, and they also are just master storytellers, who know how to write compelling characters down to the fine details. I kind of find it hilarious that killing, gore, hatred, war is "ok" to depict in videogames, but anything sexually-related is "bad".
How come violence that brings misery and takes lives is more suitable to show than romance and sex, which actually is a way for human life to exist and for humans to multiply!
I do play adult games - on my main Steam account, no less. And there are some real gems, both gameplay-wise and story-wise. I really liked Robo Life 1-2, x-Angels - they've got story, gameplay, some replayability. I also enjoyed "Seed of the Dead: Sweet home" - a (rather simplistic) zombie shooter. Nice heroine stories, unlocks for characters, customizeable R18 system (like choosing to show or not to show gore, NTR, r*pe etc). "Peeping Dorm Manager" is also great - it's a quest with layers of secrets and mystery, of you uncovering the dirty secrets of your dorm's residents.
As for the "western" type - Subverse is an absolute champ - a "Mass effect" parody with tactical combat and waifus (still early access I believe, but full release is close), Orc Massage has fun character stories and "Masseuse" gameplay which involves relieving tensions in your (female) client's bodies. I also loved "She will punish them" - an ARPG with Diablo-style loot drops, customizable party of very attractive succubus fighters, but this game was abandoned before release, still in the "early access" limbo.
Of the upcoming games I have my eyes on "Freaked Fleapit" (demo available). A rythm roguelike exploration game with dating sim mechanics.

There was an ancient Japanese saying that you watch AV for the biological needs, and eroge for the emotional needs.
Back in the ancient times where there were no vtubers or OF models, people form parasocial relationships with fictional characters.
The eroge have player forming relationship with attractive characters. Usually, a mixture of empathy, kindness, communication skills, sensitivity, problem solving skills, determination, humor, even physical strengths and attractiveness to successfully form a romantic relationship with the waifu/husbando
The characters become surrogate romantic interests, surrogate friends, surrogate waifus and husbandos, even surrogate family. They offer a little bit of emotional support, a little bit of companionship, and maybe a little sense of belonging in this increasingly lonely and indifferent world.
Eroge are often made by outcasts. Like Nasu Kinoko and Urobochi Gen behind the fate series, many well known writer and artists were once eroge developers. Eroge are considered as fringe media, thus they are more likely to explore sensitive topics that traditional media and writers wouldn’t touch. The deep, dark and controversial eroge always hits hard on the post nut clarity.

thank you for including the rance series as it is a bit of an underground following,
especially since it has an incredible world building and deep character writing. this series tells a unique spin on rpg stories where you dont play as a typical honorable goody two shoes who want to save the world, the rance games will tell stories for adults, it will show you what happens when monsters attack a village and the hero doesnt show up its that kind of game.
so let me just give a quick rundown in case people are interested:
gameplaywise dont be afraid when you see this under visual novel genre cause while it has reading, the gameplay has complex systems with a new genre EACH game and the devs experiment within that genre so:
Rance VI: the collapse of zeth, is a classic rpg party 2D scroll world movement with a linear story
Rance VII: sengoku rance , is a grand strategy game so think civilization VI and rise of nation type game where you conquer nations with armies and a main story with multiple endings and a skirmish mode where you can start as other countries
Rance VIII: rance quest magnum, (play magnum version cause based vers is grindier and magnum vers has addl story) is a 3D RPG game where you go to areas to explore and a hub type story main story with missions using the orb system
Rance IX: the helmanian revolution is a tactics type of game so think fire emblem and xcom with a linear story using nodes so you can miss some scenes if you dont pay attention
Rance X: showdown. hoo boy cant even describe this one. multi routed, 100+ characters army and commander based combat. this game is the culmination of the entire series 30 in real life years journey where characters from the entire series show up type of deal (i recommend dont play this as your first rance game you will appreciate this more if you have played the others first)
now notice i started with 6th game in the series
cause the series is split from the old time line and the new time line and these newer games can legit stand on its own even against big well known games. however if you do want to start at the beginning just a reminder that rance 1 was made in 1989 and the gameplay shows it.
ALSO THESE OLD GAMES ARE OFFICIALLY FREEWARE
Rance 1: quest for hikari. is a point and click adventure style with a chip fight system
Rance II: Rebellious maidens. (one of the weakest entry gameplay wise) party but you can only control 1 character type of game
Rance III: the fall of leazes. is a traditional rpg think early final fantasy
Rance IV: Legacy of the sect, is a base type tower dungeon climbing rpg
Rance 4.1 & 4.2: have card game mechanics
kichikouo Rance, is grand strategy multi ending, with commander type battles and conquer nodes in countries (non canon story however really fun gameplay with great replay value)
if anyone is interested with the story i can give a quick summary of each game

Before anyone says it's for the kids that's bs becuase you can go on many streaming platforms in the US and get access to adult content through modern shows that kids aren't supposed to watch but it's right there available. Videogames get "shafted" instead becuase ignorant people associate videogames as a whole with children.

You're allowed to do the goriest death animation ever, think of Mortal Kombat, Dead Space and even Postal of all things, but showing a girls nip? Oh no no now that's pushing the limit, let alone showing the genital of either gender.

Harem Hotel was awesome until the dev went full SJW with the plot a few years ago. I dropped it when you save those elves and they still treat you like the enemy even though you're literally helping their resistance directly. It's almost an exact copy of IRL protester behavior.
I think the dev kind of ran out of ideas for events, but its making so much money that it is understandable he doesn't want to end it and try a new series that may flop. This is pretty much the problem with all of the popular games except for Carbdis since he actually did complete a popular game to move to a new series with Eternum. Frankly Eturnum is extremely overrated IMO, but I respect him not milking Once in a Lifetime, which had a fantastic ending for a harem game.

Tbh I appreciate the problematic themes in some of these games, because they're a clear-cut representation of what and what isn't the result of a moral failing.
For example, certain R18 JRPGs would cover the concept of obsession and abusing yourself, and of toxicity.
None could bear down the hammer as well as these do, because while they might have scenes that ostensibly illustrate the scenario for fetish value, narratively, they also cover the self-destruction of everyone involved, and how not only you are incredibly obsessed with this *one thing* in that game, but everyone is somehow *obsessed* over you too, like a self-destructive ouroboros.
And the beauty here? Freeing yourself from this cycle takes a LOT of effort, and rewards you very little beyond the fact that despite losing everything, you still escaped from your predicament when it could have gotten worse; a cool metaphor for going cold turkey, as you deny yourself the previous pleasures you had with obsessing over substances or actions and become a functional person.
Ending H will forever be my GOAT.
    ----
If this were a standard JRPG, the exploration would be surface level and have difficulties in making you relate.
I don't argue that everyone should play it; you already stated that the more questionable ones require more effort to find, and trigger warnings should be provided all the same, but art is art. Some adult games bypass the ghetto of making smut for smut's own purposes ala Witcher 3, where those scenes were optional and added little of value to the game, but they just get derided for being cheap without given a real chance.

i think the best adult video game is a game where the s3ks part is not the main goal but some kind of additional game mechanism that make the already good game even better.
Imagine a game like skyrim, the witcher 3, or gta but has really deep dating sims aspect in it and also a seks minigame not just cut scene, where every time you done the deed you got some kind of buff or item that can help you push the story, different partner different buff or item. the stronger your bond with your partner the stronger the buff or the better the item is.

Also, I really like the darker tones in games, like world of Bloodborne, so I really liked playing with Night of Revenge or Whisperer; not (just) for the H content, but for the gritty take on the dark fantasy (I know, it's edgy and that is considered cringe these days, but I like it).

Of course there’re bad low effort adult games, but that can be applied to pretty much every other games. And of course like you said, there’re also adult games will left you with an impact just as good as many normal games, but with the bonus of spicy material 😂. Many games I’ve played that just left me speechless and sitting in deep thought after finishing it, and many I played are just for gag and giggle when I don’t have enough time for games with some complex gameplay and engagement. I mostly speak about Japanese games, but a lot of times, genuinely extreme "fetishes" are meant to help convey the lengths the story is willing to go to make their point rather than feeling like they are just there for pleasure. A villian in a fantasy adventure RPG genuinely doing something that is horrid without the theatrical voice acting you'd expect in these scenes to make the scenario digestible and fun to watch for example, these do come up to make a point about the game's narrative direction.
I've seen people that think it's ok to skip over scenes that they don't find pleasurable, but that just feels like a very disingenuous way of reading these stories when they get serious and try to make you feel revolted on purpose. It's suppose to take something beautiful and twist it into something horror-esque, to get you to care and feel concerned about the character's in question or understand the weight of the world they live in.

So I’m an enjoyer of adult games, though I take pretty long breaks in between playing them since playing them a lot of course will get boring. Anyways, what makes me keep playing the games are the plot, and man the plot can be so good sometimes. While I don’t often think too much about about how a character looks, one really good VN (Once in a Lifetime) I played had such an ugly MC that u was so close to quitting it, luckily he got a haircut which made him go from a 0/10 to a spoiled 8/10. Another game I played (Agent 88 I think?) fairly recently had such a unlikable MC that I, of course, stopped playing it. No seriously he was so stupidly unlikeable that I cursed him for weeks on end even after I deleted it.
Though one gripe I have is that the MC the player is supposed to be is usually male, and I think it would be nice if there were more adult VN’s where the MC is a girl. I’m a girl.

Shoutout to the Japanese VN community for being the pioneer of adult gaming (or porn in general lol)
P/S: Also it's weird that you recommend the 9+ game of the Rance series

i mean, they're responsible for koikatsu and kisekae too. somehow, while making those things, they've made the best 2d and 3d character creators i know of, just by accident

Started playing these games on December last year while in limbo waiting for my internship. Started for the... "research", stayed for the story. Kinda helped me stay sane while nothing happened.
Nowadays as an aspiring creator of sorts, I couldn't stop thinking of adult scenarios and even dabbled in NSFW art now. Hoping to do something productive with those things in the future.

I like sex with layers nowadays, which I why I hate it when people are lazy with the idea of adult content being more than just the porn. I like Interspecies Reviewers because it explored the ideas of sex culture among fictional races, not just getting your nut and moving on. Sex as a theme can be entertaining, not just an easy way to get rid of your arousal.
