I believe they are tuning slide adjusters.

@@ado4224 I don't know. It could be difficulty in conventional placement on a small horn. I have, however, played a bass trombone with the tuning slide on the main slide.

it's a tis (tuning in slide) system which allows for the whole bell section to be made of one sheet of brass and also to be completely conical. some say it's a better sound. others may disapprove.
