    • @jemmpolitics4627
      @jemmpolitics4627 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Korean is mix bag of 'em cause early Korean started using a system of adding certain shapes to a symbol to denounce vocabulary, grammar, and sound. Nowadays its only vocabulary/grammar as greedy emperors kept changing how the alphabet was used or discarded it entirely until it was revived, but the vocal components of the language changed while the alphabet remained dormant. Still super easy to learn to read, speaking is another task all together.
      obv. Japanese and Chinese have differences in how they use the originally Chinese symbols, with Japan still using the mixture of traditional Chinese with hirigana and katakana, while East Asian and Southeast Asian countries using either Simplified or Traditional Chinese based on region. Hell China itself uses Simplified, with the exception, technically, of Hong Kong (but that's too geopolitical for this comment section).
      I may have gotten 1 or 2 details wrong, but I'm fairly assured overall in the correctness of my ramblings.

    • @lrom5445
      @lrom5445 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fist set is chinese, set 2 is korean, set 3 is Japanese. Japanese Kanji comes from chinese character (Hanzi) and can look identical. In fact, you'll notice set 1 (the chinese set) has the same symbol for flower as set 3 (the japanese set). The kana is a better giveaway for Japanese cards, as there is always kana on Japanese magic cards. Just based on the kanji/hanzi though you'd basically be guessing since many of the hanzi are in kanji as well.

I can't imagine trying to corner the market on them, especially if it's been reprinted. Hoarding them in the late 90's makes more sense though.

    I have huge stacks of stone rain and strip mine. All different sets and languages and re-prints. I do not really know why, and it makes no sense because both exist in crazy numbers. When i ordered something online on magiccardmarket and someone had stone rains for 2 cents per piece or some 80 cent strip mines i just added them all to my purchase. In reallife my trade binder started with 20 pages of stone rain.
    Now i think the alpha and beta stone rains and the antiquities and from the vault strip mines pay for it all.
    This was not a buyout, just fun, another guy did it with dark ritual. One time a guy i barely knew walked up to me and just gave me 40 stone rains.

    What I've learned about trying to corner the market is that it ALWAYS costs much more than you think it will. Whatever your expectations are, quadruple it at the lowest and don't be surprised if it ends up being ten times higher than your expectations. I bought out a TON of Sylvan Advocates on MTGO a year and some change ago.
    First of all, I heavily underestimated the liquidity of the market for reselling them. More importantly, I also underestimated the sheer amount of volume that were sitting in player's collections, despite it being MTGO. My initial assumption was that a higher percentage of cards on MTGO are actively traded and played and hence tried to estimate supply through deck popularity in tournament play. I've never been so wrong.
    Point is, if you're going to try and corner the market on ANY card, be prepared to spend much more than you are comfortable with.

    I'm assuming Lotus Petal was just his favorite card. Myself, as well as a few friends of mine did the same thing back in the day. We were on a team called "Team Legend" so, as lame as it was, we collected that awkward Stonehold rare called "Sword of the Chosen" due to it's association with Legends, and the fact that nobody would ever play it, so it was a rare we could trade for cheaply and easily. At one point, we ended up having over 200 of them.
    And for those old-schoolers out there, does anybody remember the deck called "Flagpole" that was first created and played by Andrew Pacifico? I believe he won the Junior Championship with it at one point. I'm assuming that's the reason for the signed Walls of Roots, as well as the playset of Tradewind Riders. The deck was really popular for a while back in that time frame, and was basically one of the first Type 2 four/five color control decks. It played things like those Gemstone Mines, Wall of Blossoms, Wall of Roots, Birds of Paradise, Spike Feeders, Firestorm, some counter magic, some burn, etc... and mainly relied on bounce control with Tradewind Rider. I only remember all of this because I had Pacifico sign almost my entire Flagpole deck, lol. He even drew little flag poles into the hands pictured on my Walls of Blossoms. It seems super mundane now, but when I was 14, I thought it was awesome!

    Chinese and Japanese can be pretty hard to differentiate if you aren't really familiar with the languages, especially because they use some of the same characters, but Korean is pretty easy. Korean is mainly circles and straight lines. Once you see it on a few cards, it's really easy to tell Korean from the other languages.

    • @jkw3010
      @jkw3010 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chinese characters are more complex (each character is a word) while Japanese are more simple (half the characters are just sounds) - also, the psuedo-period is a give-away on Magic cards - Chinese has a circle in the middle of the line, Japanese has a circle flush with the bottom of the character line. First cards were Chinese, 2nd set was Korean, and 3rd pile was Japanese.

    • @EadricRicmund
      @EadricRicmund 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rule of thumb is... if the characters look like Tic Tac Toe, its Korean. If the name have a mixture of symbols that are both complex and simple then it's Japanese. If all the characters are complex then its Chinese lol.

    This REALLY takes me back. The Lotus Petals...
    I don't know if this is from the same guy, but I can tell you a little story about a guy I knew in the 90s and his commitment to the Lotus Petal.
    Once upon a time in Arkansas there was this shop where a guy named Chris worked, I and my friends played in tourneys there, I was really into 1.5 and Extended myself. My friend Joey was all about Standard. Anyhow, this dude who worked at the place always asked for Lotus Petals anytime somebody got Tempest cards. I found out when I and my friends bought a few boxes, and he tells me "I'll give you a deal on any Lotus Petals you don't want".
    I kept four, but I had a load of them after opening 3 boxes of cards, so I brought the small stack to him along with a few other spares thinking he might be interested in some of those too, but he just wanted the petals. He was still salty that he'd never gotten an actual Lotus in the day. And resigned himself to the fact he'd never own one. But he figured he'd get all of the petals he could and hold onto them until they were worth something. Maybe he'd cash out one day and get a real Lotus.
    It was kinda sad and funny, me being a young prick I decided to have a little fun at his expense and started collecting Erg Raiders and telling a similar story about how I knew I'd never own a Bazaar of Baghdad and hoped to trade them in for one one day. I ended up buying four of them a month later for $15 each, because it was still the 90s and nobody knew how badass that card was yet. I don't think he ever get his Lotus.

    Mine is the original art prodigal sorcerer. It holds a fond memory of my early days playing magic and so I collect them. I've been known to spend hours in a shop getting every copy from the bulk bin and spending 5 or 10 bucks to buy them out. I have hundreds. Not as an investment but because I just want them all. There are shops I frequent that set them aside while sorting bulk and no longer charge me for them.

    Wall of roots was in at least one World Champion deck. It's a powerful card that doubles as both early game defense and mana acceleration. It was particularly powerful because you don't need to tap it for the mana and you could grab mana from it both on your turn and your opponent's. The one deck that comes to mind where I remember seeing it used was the reoccurring nightmare and survival of the fittest deck that took 1st place back in the day sometime in the mid 90s. It was particularly powerful in that deck because it could be sacced to reoccurring nightmare once it's counters were building up to high.

    I remember setting up my greatest combo deck out of so-called "useless" cards including Glacial Chasm. It all started with Storm Cauldron and my desire to find a use for it, not just a situational one-off use, but a center stage glorious STAR of the deck.
    Here's how it goes: Storm Cauldron, Fastbond, Glacial Chasm, any "do X damage" spell as the finisher. Storm Cauldron returns any tapped land to your hand, Fastbond lets you replay them for mana immediately at the cost of damage, Glacial Chasm reduces that damage to zero. *Infinite mana.* For extra fun, make the X damage card a Hurricane or Earthquake to bring ruin to an entire table's worth of players in a multiplayer game.
    This also brought one of my favorite "Did you even READ your card?" moments as I performed that combo and concluded "... and I cast hurricane with 10 billion mana, so everyone and everything takes 10 billion damage, except me who takes zero because of Glacial Chasm."
    One of the players thought he had a GOTCHA and replied "I FORK YOUR HURRICANE! SUCK IT, LOSER!!!"
    There was a moment of silence around the table as everyone stared at him silently. Clearly, he was the only one who did NOT understand the futility of what he had just done.
    "Okaaaaaay... now everybody takes *20 billion damage* except me. Because you know, Glacial Chasm? The card I just told you reduces all MY damage to zero? You just made everybody lose twice as hard, seriously man do you even understand how Fork works?!?"

    IDK about lotus petal, but... I used to buy up wastelands back in the late 90s wherever I went. I mostly picked through the uncommon bins at comic book stores and got them for 25 cents each. I made a dumb deck with 30 wasteland and then a bunch of random artifacts (stax with some stalking stones lol) just to troll on kids who paid $10-20 for each of their dual lands.
    I stopped playing MTG in college and med school, then came back to the game in 2013 when I found my box of mtg at my mom's house. I sold 100 wastelands to a dealer in Virginia for $8,000 and then paid off one of my school loans, haha.
    Basically all I'm trying to say is that back then a lot of stores had big cardboard boxes just sorted by rarity; a lot of the time commons were something like 10 cents and uncommons were 25 cents. So it was pretty easy to just buy a bunch of a certain card if you wanted to collect them for some crazy deck idea.

    I've had random urges to collect a random specific card before. After pulling 6 in a row in Kaladesh Drafts I started collecting Aetherworks Marvels, had about 15 before the Marvel Deck came out. Really annoyed me as I was collecting them because I believed it to be a garbage mythic. I still maintain that the only reason the deck did well in tourneys is because the judges didn't catch the players cheating.
    In other news, I'm pretty sure I bought the French Lions Eye Diamond in this video.
