How to Paint a Sunset | Acrylic Painting Tutorial | Bass Lake Sunset

- I hope you enjoy this tutorial! This is a step by step painting of a sunset on Bass Lake. Please grab your supplies and join me!
I grew up visiting my grandparent's waterfront home in Bass Lake, CA We spent every 4th of July, Thanksgiving and most other holidays visiting this adorable quaint little town as a kid. When my grandparents sold their home we were all devastated. But my Aunt and Uncle bought a house in Bass Lake about 20 years later which was awesome. And now my sister and brother-in-law recently moved there as well so we have been able to visit a lot! It's a very special place to my entire family so it felt appropriate to create my first official youtube tutorial of one of Bass Lake's amazing sunsets. Bass Lake is located in California about 30 minutes from Yosemite.

Such a BEAUTIFUL painting !!! And, you were wonderful with it being your first video. You gave us so much useful and detailed information. About painting horizontally when you paint the water reflections, I never knew that. I was wondering how to have the water part of my paintings actually LOOK like water. Hey Debbie...I'm dumbfounded that you can get all those beautiful colors from 4 colors...& always seem to get the same shade again on a remix...I wish I had come across you 2.5 yrs ago when I started my journey...I wouldn't have the amount of unused paints that I now own...I was taken back when I saw you paint that 1st stroke for your pine bc I didn't know it was there...I thought you were going to show us how to fix a mistake...& then I busted out laughing when you swiped your son's face w the brush....Very Kool Family🤙

I have a question regarding to the paper you use as a palett to mixing colors.. Which kind of paper is that? Is Just regular paper or another kind of paper? Beautiful sunset💖
It’s called a Palette Pad. It’s almost like wax paper. You can find them online at Michaels arts and Crafts or www.Jerrysartarama.com or any art supply store.

Hi Debbie, Your paintings are amazing !! Do You Prime Your Canvas Before You Begin ?
Thank you so much Joan! I actually never used to prime my canvases because I always purchased “pre-primed” canvases. What I’ve found is that they usually have such a thin coat of primer they need a bit ore. I paint an additional coat of gesso and sometimes I will tint it with a bit of paint to give it a colored base coat before I get started with the final painting.:)

I stumbled upon your channel and so glad I did. Painting clouds have been challenge for me. You make it look so easy and so realistic, that is something I cant seem to achieve. I know it takes practice, practice but is there anything else you can help with me achieving realistic clouds? Thanks for sharing your talent and skills. I love the limited palette and just a few brushes that you use to create such amazing paingtings. Please continue to make more tutorials. I love them. Thank you again.
artsygirll2010 You’re so welcome! My best suggestion for painting clouds is to have very little paint on your brush and just build the layers up gradually. Wait for them to dry in between layers otherwise you will start to lift off the previous layer. I have a quick video on painting clouds that may be helpful to you as well. 😊

Gorgeous! Do you varnish your paintings? If so, do you use a satin or gloss finish? How do you know which one will look best on which type of painting?
Karen Cutler Thanks so much Karen! I do paint a satin varnish on all of my final paintings that I plan to hang or sell. I prefer satin over gloss because I don’t like the extra shine that gloss has. So it’s just a personal preference. :)
Debbie you did a wonderful work, and i'm glad to see that we have many things in common. I recently use much more the magenta in my primaries then the red, i think magenta is more usable. Very nice artwork, Debbie :)

I have a question……all those layers on the clouds,,,,, because you didn’t like the looks of them, so you kept adding different colors? OR. That many different colors/layers (on top each other) was necessary to get the effect? I am fairly new to painting & trying to understand. The painting turned out beautiful & I want to try it.
