That was one of my absolute favorite ads ever. As a subscriber for more than two years it was so cool seeing the references to some characters from some time ago. Awesome job guys. ;)
The info in this episode is pay worthy! Awesome episode! To see and hear robs skills (who seems to be a highly respected audio guy) for free is invaluable! Thanks ryan for giving us such high quality learning! I come into the film game from always being around music and creating music... so to see this was great!
Best Film Riot I've seen in awhile! I'm a drama/comedy filmmaker, and although it's cool to see these actions sounds, I'd be great to see/hear every day sounds. Doors, Cars, Footsteps, Fridge, Room sounds, y'know?
Lots of that stuff you can record yourself very easily in your own house. We are Starting with the stuff like guns and melee that is a little more difficult/timeconsuming/expensive to do on your own.
***** I was just thinking the same thing, when he was talking about using the limiter to stop clipping, the audio was clipping in the video. funny stuff
I learned in high school that you have to smack stuff out of peoples hand strait down. Although smacking it up gives a better visual experience, it also gives the person time to catch whatever it is you just smacked out of their hand.
Awesome tipps in there, several. Thanks a lot, Rob! Also: My favourite character is back! No, I'm not talking about the robot, I just love the creepy Ryan. Dem eyebrows!
I love the incredible irony of him talking about a limiter for fixing audio clipping when his audio is clipping everywhere. Great job to whoever was doing sound at that moment.
Film Riot Okay that's good to know. You guys might want to state that in the description because I guarantee the first thing people are going to think (as I did) is "what crappy audio in a video talking about good audio". Otherwise, I did really enjoy the video and seeing you guys breaking down how you created your sounds!
I think Ryan might have a world record in how far he can move his eyebrows- I bet the skin is so loose on his skull he could do origami on the back of his neck.
I was thinking the other day, how it would sound to utter words that closely resemble a language, and how it would be funny to experience the brain desperately trying to assemble the information to intelligible form. You just exempted me from further investigation as you have just expounded the technique in the beginning of the video :D 0:27
Too cool of an Emery jacket Josh, love that band. And great video too, very informative. I've got a long ways to go with audio, keep up the mega awesome ultimate videos! :D
Thanks a lot for making this! I wish I had watched this before starting to make videos. Looking forward to a faster and more enjoyable process while working on my next project!
Hi Ryan! Thanks for all the stuff you do. Imagine you just finished film school and you have a 10k budget in your pocket for all the equipment. How would you distribute it on individual gear to get the most out of the money? What would you skip for the beginning, where would you invest the most? Many thanks!
Recording fruits and veggies crunching for those really gorey, painful impacts and shots, sounds like a lot of fun, I'm excited to try it! As someone who's very new to foley and SFX, how practical is it to go hard and record the actual literal sound of exactly what you want? Like if I want a punch in the chest sound, and I want it to be realistic, would it be more practical to actually take the L and have someone punch me in the chest [and hope I hit record beforehand], or to do what you guys did and record each individual noise of a punch in the chest, and then layer and mix it appropriately? Obviously some sounds would be easier to find and literally record than others- a fucked up squeaky elevator would be way easier to find and record than the sound of a chainsaw cutting through consecutive layers of metal, plastic, and flesh.
Definitely one of the most interesting episodes in a long time. Kudos. Really interested in hearing the final product, considering you guys were recording outside in the wind with other noisy noiseocity. Any reason (other than space, I suppose) you didn't record inside? Do you expect a lot of "clean up" before getting your final results?
There will be a lot of denoising for sure but it won't be too bad as it was relatively quiet when we recorded. Calm wind is fairly easy to remove. The reason for recording outside was get a more natural eco. We did record some stuff inside as well.
Yeah, I thought about the echo thing being an element. Sounds more natural than being just a dead *THUNK*, I suppose? Audio is one thing that really fascinates me. I got the opportunity to work with a former Hollywood pro sound guy on my last short (done for the Bloody Cuts "Who's There" competition). It was a trip watching him work. We shot everything MOS and he created the entire sound of the film from scratch.
Talking about using a limiter to avoid clipping, while the audio is clipping. ;o
That was in cam audio on a DSLR, not two system sound like we were talking about. :)
No big deal, I just found it ironic.
Yeah sadly the Canon 5D Mkl II that they were shooting on doesn't have a limiter. and we were using the H4N to record the sound as well as my gear.
@@tshddx except it wasnt actually ironic
And it sounds quite fixable too! Clip filter in adobe audition might have sorted it in a few clicks!
Even the word Krekel sounds like a sound effect, this guy was born for this...
You make commercials fun to watch and that's stupid. Stupid funny. Another classic. Almost woke the wife laughing;)
Made me cry while at work
so so classic =))
That was the best sponsor time EVER!!!!
Me too I loved it too it was awesome!
"Prevent your peaks from distorting" he said while the audio distorts all over the place :p
That was BTS, with an on camera mic that has no controls. All our audio gear was being used for recording the sounds at the time.
:) I understand that, your products are amazing, and the show as well, obvs. Was just pointing out that tiny spot of irony ;)
i like the video but cant listen to those distortions
yeah I thought the same thing lol. Still a fantastic video though

Film Riot You're welcome :)

4:45 haha that background action :D
Great episode! I'm really looking forward to the fight pack! I love a good fight scene, so it'll be nice to have some brutal hit sounds!
Possibly my favorite episode so far.
love that the audio for the video about good sound quality sounds like crap. Way to go guys.
***** I was just thinking the same thing, when he was talking about using the limiter to stop clipping, the audio was clipping in the video. funny stuff
Yeah I think that one got past the QA department. Still love these guys though. They're allowed to mess up sometimes ;)
+Jason Coleman noticed it instantly as well :D
see, they need to hire me and move me to Texas! Woo Hoo!!
this is actually really clever. in order to focus on sound effects and audio, they took out all the visuals to help us concentrate better.
Ryan in the background your too funny! 5:28 to to 5:55, also I thin this is the first time I saw Ryan's full body! Lol
Such a great episode!
Best sponsor ad so far!
Thanks!
This is so good guys this is exactly what I asked for yesterday on Facebook it's like they always know what i want to watch.

You guys rocks! Greetings from Mexico!
Thanks for the tip about setting the limiter on the H4N. Going to save me from a lot of headache!
Film Riot , All the acting out in the background was awesomely funny.
I learned in high school that you have to smack stuff out of peoples hand strait down. Although smacking it up gives a better visual experience, it also gives the person time to catch whatever it is you just smacked out of their hand.
Glad to see the "get a girlfriend" character back! Totally need to work him into a shirt design.

GAAAWD I NEED THE ROBOT SONG!
Best sponsor time ever!!!!!
I love the incredible irony of him talking about a limiter for fixing audio clipping when his audio is clipping everywhere. Great job to whoever was doing sound at that moment.
That was a BTS cam with no additional mic. All of our audio gear was busy at the moment, but still wanted to get some content for the show.
Film Riot Okay that's good to know. You guys might want to state that in the description because I guarantee the first thing people are going to think (as I did) is "what crappy audio in a video talking about good audio". Best ad they done this year
Great video! Cracking up at Ryan in the background :D
