“Did those people that have left the club over the last couple of years already know the club’s future? Governments don’t make these sorts of decisions overnight.”
ARR also quoted a trainer saying that “the sickening part of it is that we have been busy buying horses, and all the while they have been planning this. I think the anger is that there was no dialogue whatsoever … The history of the place, the livelihoods at stake … and there was zero dialogue.”

You can’t wrap an 181-year-old industry in 16 months,” encapsulating the prevailing sentiment among the horse racing fraternity.
Jason Ong, a young trainer, also shared his discontent over the abrupt closure, noting that the STC should have advised them not to buy more horses had they known about the impending closure.
Four-time Singapore champion jockey Vlad Duric empathised with the staff at the STC, expressing sympathy particularly for the owners who have recently invested in the industry. He also emphasised the bond and resilience within the community, stating they will stick together until the end.

Closure of Race Course brings to mind the closures of pig farmers at Punggol Rd. They were encouraged to invest in equipment for a more hygiene pig sty. But after they done so shortly afterwards the govt banned pig farming in SG. Many of the Pioneer & Medeka Generation families were so sore about it. They sunk money in compliance for more hygienic pig farming and before they could break even they were left in the very painful lurch! Some moved to Malaysia, while others switch to alternatives.

Yes, I remember that very well. I also remember a friend paid $200,000 for a piece of land to build a factory in an industrial estate only to have the government earmark it for redevelopment six months later, he lost everything. The fact of the matter is that the government can screw you up, and it's very disheartening for those affected. So you elites out there that ride on the tailcoat of the government to get where you are, remember, be humble, your success is not due to your hard work but by riding on the back of the pioneer generation. Some of those people paid a heavy price to enable you to be where you are. You should be thinking of how to pay back to society rather than be arrogant and scold everyone when things don't go your way.

Closing it will have no effect on gambling. Haven't you seen the queues at Singapore Pools on auspicious days?
Singapore needs a Rural Development Board!
Most tourists have never heard of the Turf Club and never stray far from a line drawn between Chinatown and Changi. ("no, no, we go to Sentosa and Orchard road also!" 🙄) The Singapore economy does depend on tourism (qv the COVID times) and the Turf Club is an ideal tourism money spinner. It's also attractive to rich people, e.g. those enclaves on Sentosa, Keppel..
You can build HDB anywhere. Once the Turf Club is gone, it's gone for good. There are enough lower grade half+ empty shopping malls that could be converted. Get off the Changi - Chinatown axis and you'll find them.

But I am sad and disappointed that our Govt is taking away such recreational sports, including golf courses citing the need for more land to build housing. Do you know horses are subject to abuse every time they race? They're beaten to run as fast as their bodies can take or cannot take, getting bleeding in lungs in exhaustion or painful injuries and once their "performance" is judged by humans as below par, they would be slaughtered. Metal bits are put inside their mouths to control them and these cause pain too just like for us.
