A Triumph Bonneville T120 and the NC500 - Moto Camp Day 1.

  • I'd been looking forward to riding my Triumph Bonneville T120 around Scotland on the NC500 route for a while; I finally got a chance to do it.
    Touring the NC500 on a motorcycle is a true classic ride, however over the past few years, the growing popularity of the route means that doing the ride in the height of summer means the roads are often choked with campervans and cars, spoiling tracks that seem as though they were designed to be ridden on two wheels.
    Going early in the year means that although it can still be a little cold, in April the roads are gloriously empty and the notorious midges haven't arrived en masse yet giving clear roads and clean visors, which in my opinion is how the NC500 was meant to be experienced.
    In this video, I've skipped the motorway ride up to my starting point in Inverness, where I stayed for the first night. From there I travelled along the coastal road up to John O'Groats and then on to my stay for the night at Durness. It's a great ride and quite easy to do in one day.
    I hope you enjoy the video and if you're planning on doing the NC500 yourself, I hope you find the place markers helpful.

      Thanks, I'll have to have a watch of your trip. We did it in summer in a car and roads were horrendous, especially the pass with people taking campers over it, which was a big part of the reason why I decided to go a bit earlier in the year on the bike, even then though I was surprised at how quiet it actually was.

    I think going up the east coast and down the west,as you did,is the better way to travel the NC500.I went with two mates ,four years ago,and we went the opposite route.Having ridden all around these routes in the past but never stringing them together,the east coast then central southward is slightly less interesting than returning via the west coast.That being said, Pitlochry and Perthshire is one of Scotland's most scenic areas and one of my favourite go to places on a bike.

    • @ClassicRides
      @ClassicRides  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think if you're doing the NC500 specifically, then east to west is way to go as the scenery gets more and more spectacular as you go. Having said that, there's nothing wrong with the east, it's just not as epic as the west 😁

    Wonderful video. I stayed at the same campsite just outside Inverness when I rode the NC500 last Sept. I took a different route North to Lairg in order to miss some of the A9. JOG was pretty busy and misty when I was there so I couldn't do the obligatory 'by the post' photo instead I got a few 'been there' pics and moved on to Dunnet Head. I camped at the hostel in Tounge, but there was no view the day I was there, nor the next as the weather was being very Scottish. Really looking forward to the rest of your ride.

    Would love to ride in a place with wide open spaces like that. Where I live, it is heavily wooded. While many people think that is a good thing, the downside is that you might not see animals coming until they dart out in front you on the road (especially deer). I've had more than a few close calls that way. In the terrain on this video, you should be able to see an animal coming a mile away.

      I can understand that, for the short while I lived near the New Forest in England, large animals appearing in the road, seemingly out of nowhere was always a risk. Open space is much more relaxing to ride in 😁

    Another brilliant film Mat, you capture the true essence of motorcycle pleasure ! What tent is that you are using ? I'm off for 2 weeks camping in Spain and Potrugal in the summer on my Guzzi V7. That looks like a nice compact tent.

    • @ClassicRides
      @ClassicRides  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you liked the video Richard. The tent is a Two Second Tent from Decathlon. There are tents that pack down smaller, I find this fills up a 35 litre duffle bag, but the ease of putting it up and packing away is a winner for me. Plus it’s a black-out tent so it stays cool inside when the sun’s out.

    Hello, I really liked your video. Nice editing and goofdfitting on the bike. Could u tell me something about the setup with the blinker in front and in back. I also see a shortened mudguard? Seems like motone? Wondering what u used. Well done, geat inpiration for my T120 as it is under constant modifiction

    • @ClassicRides
      @ClassicRides  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Maarten, yes you've identified them correctly, the front and rear mudguards are Motone, as are the indicators. The front indicators are mounted to a relocation bracket also by Motone. The rear indicators are a bit more complicated as I've used a pair of shock mount brackets from Motone, but I've mounted them to a screw hole in the bottom part of the grab rail. Because I removed the top part of the grab rail, on the bottom part you are left with two holes on each side where the top rail screws in. So in one hole I attached the indicator bracket, and in the other I put a luggage lug that helps with attaching bags to the seat.
