  • This G-Class is the most powerful and expensive model out there. There are a couple of reason why this model is so recognizable: first the shape of this SUV has hardly changed in decades, and second this has become the de facto mode of transportation for the famous. But a little history first; in 1972 the Shaw of Iran asked Mercedes to build a 4x4 vehicle. The G-Model was meant to be a no frills off-road vehicle. Over the next several years the G-Class became more of a status symbol with the amenities to match.
    Under the hood is a hand-built 6.0 liter bi-turbo V-12 engine that makes 621 horsepower and 738 lb-ft. of torque. The transmission is a 7-speed automatic dubbed the AMG Speed Shift transmission. Inside the interior is a very premium set-up with quilted leather seating with body-color matched stitching. The analog gauges feature carbon fiber trim.

    Definitely an icon. If $$$ was no object, would have one for sure

    It's a 4.0L V8 in the G550 or 5.5L V8 in the G63 AMG. I have an 09 G550 and I love they aren't complicated. They're very reliable and the fact that they don't have an air suspension makes the suspension very reliable as well.

    Looks like sport car performance tires on that thing. Needs some proper all terrains or mud terrains if it's going to do anything off road regardless of lockers, but then no one is going to wheel a quarter of a million dollar rig heck I get nervous of damaging my 17 Power Wagon off road and although not $220K it's still very expensive.

    Originally these iconic vehicles are developed by the Austrian Steyr-Puch, the same company that develops Pinzgauers and also the Steyr-Aug Bullpup Assault Rifles. The Steyr-Daimler-Puch G, is the real proper functional Gelande-Wagen. And then there is the Peugeot P4, which has Square headlights and Peugeot engines
    The only proper Gelande-Wagens are the G280 V6 CDI and the G300 V6 CDI, those are the only sensible engines for this vehicle, every other variant is just pointless and expensive. The V8 and V12 engine would make perfect sense only in the Guard-Series Mercedes-Benzes, where these are Armoured, because then there's a real purpose to it.
    AMGs are just expensive show pieces, they have no real purpose other than draining away someone's surplus wealth.
    Currently I am looking forward to buying a Land Rover Defender or a G300 CDI as my work vehicle. The one that got most of my interest is a 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300GD, in bone-stock form, for €6,200.

      @limeyhooligan2536 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good points, you know your G Wagons! I agree on the sensible engines part, I went with a used G550 and the basic 5.5L v8, good power but not overboard like the turbo'd AMGs. I will take mine offroad, in the process of slightly lifting it with new ORC springs and shocks as well. I prefer these over the Land/Range Rover, even though I'm British, there's just something about the G that's the "cool" factor. Kinda like comparing a Gold Wing to a Harley cruiser, the Honda is an all-around better bike, but the Harley has the cool factor and appeal.

      @caleb2242 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@limeyhooligan2536 v8 5.0 ‘02. Plenty of power but not really a highway car anyway. From what I’ve Read people have issues with the bi turbos leaking on the g63. Better to just stick with stock v8.

    • @caleb2242

      @Commentator541 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Look at how "tanky" it is once it crashes. Roof collapses and body crumbles, it is not a safe vehicle compared to modern alternatives.

    • @46rambo49

      800 hp, 650 ft#'s torque, hmmm and I know how the G wagon handles, like a truck. a recent owner of the AMG lost on I-70 just recently. hand tuned? look up Industrial Injection out of Salt Lake City and reconsider. Longer, heavier, faster, and much more potent in flat out acceleration. G-wagon better in tight circumstances offroad and that's about all, used to own one. Can't tell you top speed, speedometer pegs out before top end reached.

  • @maliceburgoyne495
    @maliceburgoyne495 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    2019 should get 800 lb weight loss, 8 speed transmission, inline 6 engine which will make it much faster, better handling and 20+ mpg. Far superior.

    Why is it so expensive? There is no reason.
    The brand strategy which makes a price range of Range Rover and Bentley agree commercially. Mercedes is extorting customer's money wastefully.

      And get a reliable all terrain vehicle! These are notorious for all sorts of problems and are a thief magnet!

    • @pedrofernandez3893
      @pedrofernandez3893 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So are the Toyotas favored by thieves, both Land Cruiser and Four Runners, they steal them and ship them out to central and South America where they are very popular and desirable.

    • @Commentator541
      @Commentator541 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know where you live, but I don't think anyone is gonna steel your LandCruiser in LA :D I could be wrong.

    • @pedrofernandez3893
      @pedrofernandez3893 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So Fla, the gateway to stolen cars sailing south of the border. They put them in shipping containers and off they go!

    • @Commentator541
      @Commentator541 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Makes sense for South America to be the market for these, given how the living standard is lower, and roads demand SUVs. I just never figured a Land Cruiser to be "desirable".

      In this case, it does. The Mercedes-AMG BiTurbo puts two turbochargers within the V of the cylinder banks.
