Robert Palmer - Addicted To Love (Never Heard Story BEHIND The Hot Video!)

- Robert Palmer hot "Addicted To Love" video, was more than just a video with a bunch of random girls holding instruments and dancing around in the background. This video may have been one of the most ingenious videos to ever come out on MTV...and Robert Palmer knew exactly what he was doing. The man known for being on the cover of GQ magazine was always as cool as a cucumber. But what's the real story behind this iconic video from 1986? In this short documentary we'll explore the girls behind the video of "Addicted To Love" and talk about what went into the video.
R.I.P. Robert Palmer. We will Never forget your voice, or your smiling face. To be 25 years old in 86 and on the dance floor with the love of your life. and our favorite song starts.
Palmer got publicly RIPPED by some other pop artists at award shows at the time, citing his lack of creativity in his videos. One guy told him to "get a new idea." But all these years later, whose songs and videos do we remember most?!?
That's funny. Every rock video from that time is just the band playing the song.
Peter Gabriel, Michael Jackson, A-Ha.
De Robert Palmer, je me souviens de certains titres
et que les musiciens étaient
doués.
I loved those videos. Even as a lad I knew those Lady's were hot
And Shania Twain did the same thing with guys years later.
The girls always made me smile and wish❤
I remember at the time all my female friends ripping on the video saying it is totally sexist and misogynist. I replied by saying you take a group of women about the same age and similar race/skin colour. You dress them up the same. Same hair and same makeup. Have them moving in similar ways. And no two look the same. This video and the following video where he did the same thing with rather more women were a celebration of how different women actually are. There is no confusion at all that any might be twins or played by the same person. A celebration of the woman is how I describe these videos. And lets be fair he wasn't the only famous person using beautiful women to sell a product. He gave us what we wanted. Great songs and great videos. No wasted attempts at story telling or other BS. RIP Mr Palmer... you are missed.
I remember hearing that PALMER who did NOT set up, that VIDEO style, kept running into the Girls and did not recognize them, until they would Hug or Kiss him on the cheek and Thank him for that opportunity
Robert Palmer was the epitome of cool in the 80's, taken too soon RIP 🙏
Cigarettes will do that
I saw him in the late 1970's. He had a beautiful shapely drummer dressed up as playboy bunny center stage!
ROBERT PALMER was referred to as THE JAMES BOND of Rock The 007 of Popular Music. He was NOT Limited to the 80's by ANY standards. he was 60's-70's 80's -90's up till 2003. At least! I saw him & other people I've with have talked about seeing him Live [All over the world] and How many Music Styles that he MASTERED Sang and Played. PLUS: Helped create Supergroup He Led, THE POWER STATION 2 Albums. ~I'm Lovin' That ROBERT PALMER
The models were very grateful for this viseo, because they added it to their CVs and got a lot more work.
Exactly right ! They are the Art-Work buddy
Back when MTV played music videos and virtually nothing else 24/7
What a great time that was...videos have been replaced with reality shows...time for music videos to come back...I still remember when a bands video was premiering for the 1st time...I thought that was so awesome seeing a video as it was just coming out..
Check out my channel, I do nothing but make reimagined music videos like I was a displaced 1980's MTV music video editor :)
The phrase “Back when MTV played music videos” has been uttered longer than the actual period of time that MTV played music videos! You could have said this in January of 1995 and gotten lots of nods from people.
@@jsizemo I wouldn't know, even though I was alive then, I was in high school and entering college, did not have cable TV, and did not have time to watch TV anyway like back in middle school. So I missed out on MTV, entirely, 100%. In fact, the only MTV video I have ever watched was on TH-cam... Weird Al's Money for Nothing parody video...

This is the best video about Robert Palmer I've seen.
I was pre teen in the 80’s. I was lucky that my parents never censored me or my siblings from media at the time. Of course, MTV was a big part of that.
I remember seeing “Addicted to Love” video and was awestruck by the beautiful girls (who I thought were just fashion models) playing instrument. Even as a kid I knew that there was something that Robert had going on that most men didn’t. At least when it came to music videos.
Duran Duran was the same type of way. Them and Robert Palmer was the epitome of the jet set 80’s guy who were fashionable, financially set and thriving. Beautiful women, fast cars and boats. It was the lifestyles of the rich and famous for the younger generation.
A young boys dreams…..
Robert Palmer and David Bowie appealed to all MTV genres (Pop, R&B, Rap and Rock). "Living rent free" in my head since 1986, for sure!! \m/
It's a time I'll never forget...watching videos being shown for the 1st time on MTV was a big deal...now we have auto tune for music and reality shows on MTV...things sure have changed...thanks for the comment!!
This was an iconic video. Brilliant!
I guess that he had 2 signature songs. “Doctor, doctor give me the news. I’ve got a bad case of loving you.. “ Ring any bells?
Most anything he did was awesome. His most unique song was "she decided to change his ways" 😅
39 yrs later and this video is still smokin hot
right on.... thanks for the comment!
Great, I had no idea about the fascinating story behind the iconic 'Addicted To Love' video! It's crazy to think how much thought and creativity went into making that legendary look, the combination of the music and those models created something timeless.
Great songs and great videos. I doubt anyone who has ever watched them will forget them anytime soon.
very true ... thanks for the comment!!
3:26 Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love is a timeless classic, and learning the behind-the-scenes details makes it even more fascinating.
I was 20, single and super happy ! what a beautiful time it was...the 80 's
Honestly, this is the first time I've heard the real reason behind that video. Thank you for clarifying things.
Robert Palmer is a genius, that's for sure, and the story you bring us here is quite surprising, something that was not known about this subject, it's great.
Il a su créer un style basé sur
la soul et les rythmes des
Caraïbes.
Abu Dhabi 1986 Center Hotel. Loved watching this! Great times!
My favorite Robert Palmer song was Every Kinda People from ‘78, which people might remember, but not associate with this later iteration of Palmer.
Ah yes... I'm familiar with that...and I've visited some of the stories of Palmer in the early days with Vinegar Joe...71' to 74' ... I've been a fan since the beginning... thanks for the comment!!
The models in the music vid "Addicted to Love" absolutely need to me represented!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the comment!!
Very informative. All this time I had thought that the five ladies were symbolic of the five Great Lakes between the U.S. and Canada. My personal favorite is, off course, the woman who depicts Lake Superior.
That is an interesting theory, I never thought of it that way! :) Thanks for the comment!!
Nearly 40 years and it's still a favorite. I may have to go watch it right now!
Mak Gilchrist stole my heart at the 2:28 point.
I saw Robert Palmer open for Heart at the Concord Pavilion in Concord, CA in 1980. Great show all around...
Wow ... I'll bet that was a great show...2 awesome acts!! Thanks for sharing!!
Very good video! I didn't know this information about Robert Palmer! It's really very interesting!
Thanks for watching! That's a classic song!
Iconic song and video! Fascinating to learn the story behind it-those models and the aesthetic defined an era. 🎶🔥
It was definitely a powerful and unforgettable video, right?
This video is informative, lots of details here on the subject. I remember this video well.
Very good content, high quality. Thank you for sharing such a valuab le topic!
Those women in the video are forever etched in our minds.
robert palmer is so amazing! Great video
Glad you liked the video!
this is gold bro i like your vid so much keep it going!
Well, his genius worked on me. That's always been one of my favorite videos because of the driving, catchy beat & the hot women. I really loved R.P. in The Power Station as well.
I hadn't heard about the story behind the video!
Grat! I was ver y impressed with your content, it is very well understoo d and you make it very interesting!
As I recall, he only did One Take of it.
Got on "stage", sang the song and then left.
@@MrRolandMichel that’s interesting because there are clearly different takes of him in the video.
Several years ago, more than I care to admit to, I read that they used very young, novice models for the video. Their lack of experience actually helped to create the look Robert was aiming for 🎸 🎶 🎵 🎶🎙!
sounds right...thanks for the comment!
it is interesting to see how before there were real musical shows and everything that this involves, Thank you for sharing such a valuab le topic!
Glad you found it interesting, thanks for the comment!
Wow, that brought back some intense nostalgia! I used to really enjoy this song, but I hadn’t heard those facts before-super interesting information!
It's crazy the things you learn about music videos sometimes.
This single along with Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer and It Bites Calling all the heroes was my first single purchase 😁
Great tunes!! Now was that on tape or record? I still have a handful of 45's.
@ All 45's m8, them was the days!
What sentimental and exciting content, it is interesting to see how before there were real musical shows and everything that this involves, regardless of everything, something that I do value is the naturalness that was handled on those stages.
I think it was one of the very BEST music videos. GOOD. GOOD. GOOD.
Too little Too late by Pat Benater as well? Barely a mini-dress?
@@e.a.corral4713 Thanks; I just found it and watched it. Also GOOD GOOD GOOD.
This video was worth watching just to finally find out the name Patti Kelly. From the first time I ever saw her in this video, I thought she was absolutely hypnotically beautiful.
Tina's was great as well? Saw her in concert. Awesome.
One thing is hysterical, is the women not even trying to fake playing their instruments. The fake lead guitarist is really cute. "Oh, it's time to stop now?" OUTSTANDING!
agreed...thanks for the comment!! I wish MTV still was like this :) but it's not anymore :(
Palmer was great with his videos. Died too young. Wondering what direction he would have gone next?
Hard to say ...he was such an innovator. It's funny how you can hear the songs and picture the videos at the same time...my guess is he would still keep reinventing himself but he wouldn't be able to do it with MTV since MTV is no longer what it was..it's really too bad..thanks for the comment!
This video states that the "other" video these models were in was "Simply Irresistible," but they also appeared in Palmer's amazing video for "I Didn't Mean To Turn You On."
It was 1989-90 and my good friend Bill W. took me to see Palmer for my birthday. Can't remember where, but somewhere in the Bay Area I lived then. We got there early and just outside the venue was a guy sitting on a second floor balcony smoking a cigarette. Bill said, that's RP! Sure enough it was and we talked with him like he was just another guy for quite a while. He was super cool with us. What a great memory!
That was good to have them following someone, that kept their eyes focused at a steady distance behind the camera and held steady there. Lifeless mannequin eyes. And they are just out of time enough to know they are in no way pretending to play.
1987, the Mannequin Movie comes out.
oh the Mannequin movie ...classic...would've been funny if Palmer had made a cameo somewhere in it...lol
Fabulous information that friend shares with us, allows a more exact knowledge of the subject
Thanks for this
The first time I heard thus song I immediately told my it would go #1. And then I saw the video, and it validated my ears lol iconic!
I took a walk down memory lane and revisited "I didn't mean to turn you on." I sat through the music video...such nostalgia... I seriously think he may be one of the most underrated artists of that time period.....period...thanks for the comment!!
Brilliant!!!
You had me at " Tony Thompson on drums ".
He rocked!! Thanks for the comment!! Do you have a favorite drummer? I met Jonathan Moffett years ago ...he was great..teaching a drum workshop!
Please do more Robert Palmer, hopefully covering his 90s music albuums, my fav decade of his music career
He is deceased..
@tezzrterry7485 yes everyone knows that
I'll definitely visit more Robert Palmer... I've got other videos on my channel related to Robert Palmer, but I'll cover a future video about the 90's.. thanks for the comment and taking the time to write!!
@@crossedoveryonder anytime , my fav Robert Palmer album is 1994 Honey which is criminally overlooked and his heaviest album of his career. He also The Power Station reunion in 1996
I'll have to visit that album as I'm not as familiar with it...any tracks I should check out 1st from the Honey album?
I was really disappointed when I went to his concert years ago and discovered there were no girls in his band! 😓
ha ha agreed...I feel your disappointment
Great character and ur way in displaying impressed me
wow you just hit me with some crazy nostalgia i used to love this song, never heard these facts before though pretty interesting stuff!
Any favorites of Robert Palmer you like? Besides this song :)
@@crossedoveryonder hmm "every kinda people" is another beautiful classic for me
Great stuff!!
That was a great video!!!
Great albums from this man
In my collection I have this album Rip Tide
Oh what a song, yes I was completely Addicted to one fine gal back then, wish I were now!!
Yes I remember this video - you cannot forget it. Also, I loved the one done by Shaina Twain in the same style with men. Those two artists to me will always be connected by these videos.
I guess her intention was to do the same thing but as a reversal...instead of women ..men.. Still ingenious...artists like that take chances and most of the time achieve success. The other super memorable video was "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel. There's no doubt that video was groundbreaking during that time. Love it!
I always liked this song/video but thought that Simply Irresistible was the better of the two. The line "She's so fine there's no tellin' where the money went!" I thought was one of the greatest lines in rock n roll. At least it was to this 75 YO's ears.
Interesting to know about the context of the video and artist!!!
Miss those videos and old MTV.
This video is such a classic! It's fascinating to learn the behind-the-scenes story of the iconic "Addicted to Love" video. The models in the video, the sleek vibe, and Robert Palmer’s cool performance really came together to create something unforgettable.
I know right! It really is a timeless classic.
I loved that video especially that bouncing of those units that were not tied down.
this video is very informative, I learned a lot about Robert Palmer and his hot "Addicted To Love" video
The girl on the far right with the guitar is ......she was so pretty and adorable, but here she is with the same makeup.
The first time I saw her was in ' music video for “All the Love in the World,” which was released after their classic “Your Love.”
no way.. I've gotta visit that video again...I'm a huge Outfield fan.. Play Deep was one of my favorite albums.. thanks for sharing!!
Great video....simple but very complete and fun. Good job!!!
Glad you liked it! The video is an iconic moment in music history!
thanks for share this relevant information about this artist
Palmer's wife demanded to be on set when those two videos with these models were shot.
Smart woman.
His two songs and Bananarama's "Venus" were to the three greatest plays at the Miramar O' club back in the mid-80's. A bunch of drunk Tomcat guys drooling and stumbling. You know, pretty much like any other Ladies Night at the club.
Thanks for sharing!! Great memories!!
Venus was done by Shocking Blue. Bananarama covered it later but they weren't the original singers. Robbie van Leeuwen was the one who wrote the song and Mariska Veres sang it, both Shocking Blue band members.
@@jolaharvel7852 Very true. I was talking about the MTV video. Both versions were very good.
Mak Ghilcrist, the blonde blue eyes first mentioned model, is the one that stands out in a 3 second clip from the video. Her eyes are searing right through you. Everyone I knew when the video came on knew about that clip.
It was an eye movement that was upstaged in the next year by Susanna Hoffa in “Egyptian”. Probably the most famous example of using eyes for attention
Mtv in the 80's was very good❤❤❤❤😂😂😂😂
it was the best ... do you have any favorite MTV videos? One of my favorites was "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits..that video rocked!
@crossedoveryonder duran duran rio is one of my very favourites.
ah yes rio is iconic!
And then along came Shaina Twain who performed her own song, Man, I Feel Like a Women at the Country Music Awards dressed in black, short, short skirt with black hose to draw attention to her dynamite legs and a black tuxedo inner jacket with a floor length black, silk coat and she topped the whole look with a black top hat. She was drop dead gorgeous. I think she performed it at the Country Music Awards. It was a pop rock song, not country which pissed off a lot of people in the country music industry beecause she was staying mainstream country. She was one of the first cross-over country music stars. In appearance, her song was an au verso version of the Robert Palmer Addicted to Love.Instead of female back up guitar players dressed in short black skirts, Shania's back players were hunky studs dressed in skin tight coral tops and tight fitting black pants playing guitars. Man, I Feel Like a Woman became a Number one hit all over the world. Women and men iiked the song but men fell in love with Shania on the video.
You Ain't So Tough by Dance Like a Mother was a similar video.
I saw Tina Turner live in the late Eighties and I absolutely agree, her version was an absolute barnstormer. She also performed It's Only Love with the late great John Miles playing Bryan Adams role.
No mention of Terence Donovan directing the video along with "I didn't mean to turn you on" and "Simply Irresistible"?
The man's input to the videos is part of the reason they're so memorable.
Right on... no Terence ...no video...great point!! Thanks for the comment!
Terence Donovan was a well established fashion photographer from the Sixties he brings that style to the video.A very talented guy
I just found out Donovan directed over 3,000 commercials too..what a talent! Thanks for the comment!!
She decided to change his ways. Great song from the Bossa Nova album.
Robert Palmer/ Bryan Ferry could have easily played OO7…both suave gentlemen 👍👍👌👌
couldn't agree more...they'd be great at it!!
The “video” that I remembered was him playing the song on David Letterman, without any models. It was as least as good as MTV’s video.
He was a super talent ... just watched his Letterman performance here...the guy was a legend.. thanks for the comment!
ROBERT PALMER was referred to as THE 'JAMES BOND' of Rock The 007 of Popular Music. BY OTHER ROCK Stars -- He was NEVER Limited to Just the 80's I saw him & other people have talked about seeing him Live and How many Music Styles that he MASTERED. ~Lovin' That ROBERT PALMER
Sadly Robert Palmer died too soon aged 54 from a heart-attack in September 2003 (He'd be 76 if he were still alive), unfortunately he was a smoker.
sad but true...thanks for the comment!
ya . . . and back then we only had mtv and radio - fm . . . oh, and the music store . . . amazon was still a jungle and there was no youtube, only the boob-tube . . . and if you missed your program . . . well, you missed it, same if you leave the room before a commercial . . . a much simpler and better time . . .
All of Robert's videos featuring the girls was the idea of Terrance Donovan, a British photographer.
the guy was a legend as well...kudos to such great videos with great memories.. thanks for sharing!
There is no way Tina Turner's performance of this tops Robert Palmer's. Robert is the epitome of taste and talent. His musical repertoire speaks for itself. He always did things his own way.
I always thought she did a great job of others' covers including this one...but I think what makes Palmer unique is the groove to his songs and that smoothness... no one had that type of sound or look in the 80's. Thanks for the comment!
@@crossedoveryonderI thought Boz Skaggs was similar with the groove and smoothness. And perhaps Joe Jackson too.
Not a big palmer fan but remember that one because,,,,well because it still living rent free in my mind and surfaces frequently,,,,btw 75 here…….
The single most important aspect of this video has been completely omitted. (Video, not song!) Who was the director of the video? None other that Terence Donovan, "Donovan", the well known British fashion photographer and friend of David Bailey. It explains why professional models were used for the video, and the stylised makeup they all wear.
the guy was a genius ....and you're right it should have been in the video...do you have any other favorite videos from the 80's...was just talking about Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" with a friend. It was truly groundbreaking at that time. I dug the stop motion animation.
@@crossedoveryonder The stop motion video was an interesting idea, but the song wasn't very 'musical' for me. A more sensitive treatment to B+W video and a more appealing song was Godley and Creme "Cry".
A way better, way, way better video and song, was/is Tears for Fears "Sowing the Seeds of Love". Absolute masterpiece. Their "Woman in Chains" video was/is aurally, musically and visually, about as perfect as a video can get.
Massive Attack with "Unfinished Symphony", a single shot masterpiece with a great tune and mesmerising beat. Taken even further more recently by adding dance and dancers with Keisza's "Hideaway".
'Story' videos, a theme to support the lyrics (a visual portrayal) Anastacia - "Sick and Tired (Video)". Depeche Mode and "It's no Good". Both songs will hang around in your head for hours.....
One other, that is almost pure cinematic art, New Order "True Faith (1987)".
For anyone interested in British fashion photographic history, Donovan and Bailey were both apprenticed to the Daily Express fashion photographer John French. Virtually unknown/ignored by the 1960's/1970's nouveau fashion movement which included the growth of colour fashion magazines, taken up by the recently monied working class, French produced iconic images of debutants (often stunningly attractive women) wearing post war clothing that emphasized shape and elegance. Had he been born in France and photographed for the Paris fashion houses, his name would be etched in stone within the industry, as Parkinson is in the UK. Much of the photographic work of John French, can be seen by visiting the Victoria and Albert Museum, online.
To put the images of John French into context to this video, imagine the models are wearing tight pencil skirts to their knees. Imagine the video in B+W, and what the girls might look like in monochrome. You wouldn't be far off from what you might see in a John French fashion photograph. Please, go look at the V+A archive.
thanks so much for taking the time to write and give a history of some of those iconic photographers! I agree "sowing the seeds of love" was a true masterpiece!! Still to this day one of my favorite bands as well....Tears for Fears :)
1/30/25 @ 66 can still hear it! 😅❤
no doubt...it will forever have a space in the mind.. :)
I think song was released and bombed and re-released with "that" video
I don't remember it before the video..so my association was always with the video...and of course that video in heavy rotation put Robert Palmer in the forefront. Did you like any of his other videos or have a favorite of his?
Robert Palmer my hero!
The women were sensational!!
thanks for the comment... agreed...now would you say "simply irresistible" was a better video or "addicted to love?" Some people tell me it's "simply irresistible" but I still have to go with "addicted to love" :)
@crossedoveryonder Bad case of loving you is my favorite, Second is simply irresistible. I love the opening with the gorgeous blue eyed brunette slowly opening her eyes very sexy!! Cheers..
Right on...thanks again for the comment!!
Classy 👌
This song got me addicted to tall long legged women. 😁
Funny how Chaka Khan was able to duet with Palmer on his next album, Heavy Nova. I guess the record company came around by then?
there's always contractual things with these big record companies...a lot of artists are no stranger to it...so whether you're Tom Petty or Prince they've all had wild experiences with them...thanks for the comment!
So funny when I went on a job interview in the early 90s for Bebe over half of the women there still had that plastered back Robert Palmer video chick hair! Haha! Did I bother to try to work there? Absolutely not! They didn't really know how to interview the position I was applying for and told me they would "try me out to see how I would work with the team!" Yeah! NO! I wasn't applying for a store sales position and was not going to quit a full time job for a risk like that!
Great story ...that look was so popular...I worked in a mall at that time where they had live models walking around the store to get people excited about a new clothes line...I don't even remember who it was..the clothes line...but the slick hair always stuck in my head ...and Palmers video was that very look.
you like to think that you’re immune to the stuff oh yeah!
Just like so many young dudes, I loved the transparency of the dresses. Sorry.
A long way from Vinegar Joe.
a totally different sound.. i covered his early days on this channel.... 2 totally different sounds that don't even sound similar..but i dig both..thanks for the comment!!
Dean Martin, in a video, did the same thing well before Palmer. Check out "Since I met you Baby!"
wow! I just checked it out... that's crazy...there are similarities. Gotta love Dean Martin.. my dad used to play his songs on the accordion...any other videos that really left an impression on you in the past. I'm exploring lots of videos here on TH-cam ...more lately and going down that rabbit hole... :)
