Yes I think South Korea will develop nukes. The opinion of UN won't make a difference and there will very likely be disruption in trade with China whatever they do. Not stopping Russia from invading Ukraine after they gave up their nuclear weapons is what killed nuclear proliferation so with what right would anyone criticize SK for getting nukes?

For Seoul and Tokyo, the threat of economic warfare from the PRC is a much bigger problem than a military one, and it even outweighs that of a possible hostile exchange from the Kim Dynasty. Japan and S.Korea are very much a developed economy with a very well-to-do society, risking that stability for a favourable militaristic gain is senile for both governments, espacially a democratic one whose citizen still have very fresh memory of war on their soil.
The best strategy is just to put up with whatever a possible Trump presidency is going to bring and continue to rely on American support for as much as possible, and maintaining close cooperation with each other. A nuclear weapon will not bring any benefit to Tokyo and Seoul, neither strategic nor geopolitical leverage; And no matter how hesistant to US is, I dont believe Washington will sit idly when some of their largest forward deployed bases are under Pyongyang or Beijing fire.

The combination of Chinese aggression and bullying of its neighbors and the increasing unreliability of the US as an ally makes "going nuclear" a pretty obvious choice for both Japan and S Korea. Both countries have the technical capability and, in the case of a Trump second term, it seems almost inevitable that both countries will choose to develop nuclear weapons to deter Chinese aggression. And both Japan and S Korea already have the missile technology needed to make nukes a credible deterrent.

Well, it looks to me as though they'd better act. When you're that afraid of your bully, it's time to get stronger.
Maybe all four Western-allied democracies should move simultaneously. Maybe South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Australia should all arm themselves with nuclear weapons, and do it now. Perhaps they should also sign a nuclear defence pact, even one that includes the US.

Given poor US performance in backing South Vietnam, Afghanistan, and abandoning the anti-communist forces in China, forcing them to flee to Taiwan…and US guarantees to defend Ukraine after the USSR fell but takes 6 months to pass aid and tries to micromanage the war….I think every US ally should ditch the US nuclear umbrella, which a country requires US permission to use to defend itself, and develop their own.
    Just like France did.

@@WhiteGirlHeaven so? What about it? Doesn’t mean anything unless there is a will to have your own cities nuked to defend another country. America has shown when it comes to the crunch, it will only fight until it’s inconvenient. Countries that bank their defence on the US are always vulnerable, given the US track record.
Trump is always saying America first, fair enough, but it means his odds of sacrificing to defend another country are very low.

@@WhiteGirlHeaven to repeat again: I don’t think any US president has the stones to risk getting nuked if there was already a nuclear strike on Tokyo.
Their first reaction would be to call the aggressor and ask them how to de-escalate, and warn them that attacking the US would invite a nuclear strike.
The only way nuclear deterrence works is true MAD, when the country has its own sovereign capacity and doesn’t need to ask others to use it to defend themselves.

Alternatively, if South Korea and Japan allow CHINESE nuclear weapons to be deployed in their own territories, they would never fear an attack from North Korea or even Russia ever again…
But for that to happen, China must also agree, too.
