    How did you perform the preamp test? Did you max out the gain on your Sm7b? If so, it would be a test of preamp and ambient noise. Or, did you do the test with a proper weighted dummy load or condenser mix not powered by phantom power.
    Still an impressive difference but would like to know because this may be. My next studio upgrade! Thank you for taking your time to review the device.

    • @MadSteex
      @MadSteex  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! In the video I've explained that I used a condenser Roswell Mini k47 microphone in the room and used the phantom power of the audio interface and used the the preamp of the audio interface at maximum level of lower level available from the compared audio interfaces (+57 db). Of course will not be the pure noise floor of only the audio interface but alo of the room and the mic itself, for this reason is not intended to be a test for only 1 interface but a comparison between tthe audio interfaces; alone for only 1 inerface does not make any sense, because will be only a number :) but compared it will make sense.

    Thank you! Useful information! I have a question for you, I have Focusrite 18i20 interface, now I want to connect my Scarlett 18i20 to Clarett+OctoPre because I want to use AD/DA converters from OctoPre, and Monitore control from 18i20. Can I add external analogue preamp to OctoPre? In that case I would use OctoPre AD/DA converters and 18i20 monitoring and headphones connections. I guess I don't need world clock for analogue preamp, because I didn't see that option on analogue device like Neve preamps. Thanks in advance! :)

    I just don't understand why they would put only one ADAT in on the interface since you can't get 8 channels of 96k audio over one cable. The Clarett+ has two ADAT outs, so it would only make sense to include that on the interface as well.

    Hey Max....I just maxed out on the channels of my older 8 channel version 1 Clarett 8 Pre thunderbolt. I need another 8 channels of inputs and can't decide if I should buy the same older model or or newer clarett 8 pre plus I use an AKG 214 as my main mic. Most of the inputs will be used for synthesizers, drum machines, guitars, etc. So knowing I am going direct for most inputs, do you think the 8 pre plus is worth the extra money than the first generation Clarett 8pre? Thanks for advice! And dig the music at the end. Very heavy bro🤟

    • @MadSteex
      @MadSteex  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bob, my nickname is Mad not Max :) anyway if you will use mainly line levels or Hi-z for guitars I think that the old 8pre could be enough for you, I'd look for the 8 Pre + only for several mic recording, so using the mic preamps.

      @@MadSteex Hey Mad...thanks for reply. So just to be clear, does a second clarett 8 pre go into it's own thunderbolt port or is it connected to the first clarett 8 pre through SPDIF? Also any thoughts on an used Clarett 8 pre versus s new 18i20 3rd generation? The new 18i20 is less money than a used Clarett 8 pre. So confusing to me so thanks for any advice,

    • @MadSteex
      @MadSteex  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@director2bob I've not tested the old version of the Clarett (without plus), but it is pretty similar. Anyway it's an higher level than the 18i20, different preamps, the 18i20 is more a last line of "consumer" while the clarett is the entry level of the "prosumer". Normally an expansion interface should be connected in serial, so with adat or other ports, anyway to the main interface

      @@MadSteex Hey Mad....I wound up buying a used Clarette 8 pre for $499 from Guitar Center and the two Claretts hook up using an ADAT connection. I almost bought an Apollo 6 because Sweetwater has a promotion going that throws in a free $1200 L22 mic which makes the cost of the Apollo 6 $1100. Very tempting but the $2000 I am saving is going to a pair of Focal Solo6 Be monitors. I think speakers will make the biggest difference in my studio as the Focustire Clarett is a great preamp but I am using a pair of low end $300 pair JBL speakers. Going from $300 monitors to $2500 monitors will make a HUGE difference in the sound. thanks again for advice. The older Clarett will be fine for my needs.

      Yes it is frustrating. Please don't confuse gain range with positive gain. Let me quote the official response of a focusrite rep.
      "I'm sorry to hear that Clarett isn't performing as you had hoped in that respect. We've published the gain range rather than the maximum gain in the User Guide. Apologies if that wasn't clear. We measure our specs as accurately as we can, it certainly isn't our intention to mislead anybody.
