- The Horrible Health Issues Of Louis XIV:
When you look into the diaries kept by Louis XIV’s physicians from 1647 to 1715, it quickly becomes clear during his lifetime, the sun king experienced some serious health problems. It is surprising Louis escaped death for so long, if you take into consideration the treatments he was subjected to. In this video, we’ll take a look at Louis XIV’s health problems, and the gruesome ways in which they were treated.

It is amazing he lived as long as he did
Agreed. Thanks for watching !
I love the irony of how all the buildings, arts, cultural norms and etiquette of a bygone era is usually romanticised and looked back as fabulous time to be an eyewitness to. But once you look at it from beyond these artificial features, and see it for what it truly was, you get the feeling that you should be greatful and cheerish the epoque in which you were born.
Indeed. Thank you for watching !
Yes, 100% agree with this statement.
Yes it definitely looks very appealing, but I will stay in my little home, disease and vermin free, with clean running water, freedom, warm in winter, cool in summer. Plethora of food in the house, and the means to go eat where ever I want any time. Comfortable clothes. And just being relaxed and myself with no one making judgment. Idk how they could stand getting up every day just to try to impress and belittle others. Actually a very sad time to be alive, especially for women
I’m Black. I’m constantly grateful I wasn’t alive in bygone eras.

Their epoch was better
Louis XIV was an absolute force of nature. He survived so much throughout his life and still managed to become the longest reigning monarch in history.
Just to survive the medical treatment of those days was a near superhuman feat!!!
Made my day seeing this. thnk you. The Sun King was a remarkable individual..
Glad you liked the video !!
It amazes me anyone survived ‘medical’ attention in those days - what a tribute to human will! Great video as always, my friend!
Even more remarkable considering a King would have got Royal treatment from the best known doctors etc. of that time.
So glad you enjoyed the video !
I have read a great deal about Louis XIV, but I didn't know much of this! As a former nurse, I find this fascinating! Thank you so much for this very informative video. Well done!
Glad you enjoyed the video
At university I attended a semester of "time and days of Louis XIV" (actually as a reenactor of 17th & 18th redcoat highlanders I rather studied military history as well as medical and battlefield, err "issues", which made me a rather irtitating fellow at the table (still the same today, when discussing some topics with fellow enthusiasts over dinner, but then I hail from a family of surgeons and sodgers, which might excuse me a wee bit... 😂) the delicacy of modern man to human frailty and mortality has ever been such a wonder to me... "morientes nascimur", all flesh is mortal and pain is a daily part of life.(Buddha)
Thank you for this video! I really appreciate reading diaries like this one where you get the human side vs the overabundant of romanticised memoires "She was like an angel that descended from heaven who the sweet Providence have blessed us with." 🙄
Lol agreed. History wasn’t quite that pleasant for sure…
Truly an age of agony! Merci as always 🌸♥️!
Thanks for watching Christine ! It’s good to see you ! ❤️
So glad to hear you voice on this excellent vid
So glad to see you again also. I hope you are well !
Amazing that he lived so long with so many health problems. I'm curious though . . laudanum was in use by the late 17th century. I wonder why it wasn't used to ease the pain of these surgeries for Louis.
Good to see you Bev, thanks for watching and commenting.
My pleasure! I'm always watching, just can't get up the energy to comment on every video.
Thanks for an interesting and informative presentation that is sufficiently gruesome for Halloween.
Glad you liked it David. Good to see you !
Wow!! I didn't know about these ailments. It's amazing how far we've come in modern medicine. As always, superb video where I am thoroughly fascinated and learning something new. In lieu of Halloween on Tuesday this coming week, it seems very much in line with the mood due to how gruesome some The Sun King's many ailments.
❤️
Hey there! New subscriber here! As someone who loves history and studies medicine, it’s very interesting to find out that, besides having an anal fistula and gangrene, Louis XIV had other health issues and kinda fatal ones. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much for subscribing ! So glad to see new people still find my channel !!!
I don't see how u can keep all the Louise's in any kind of order. Lol I'm super excited to see a new video. Your the best . Take care of yourself and looking forward to more videos. When it's fun for you. I appreciate your videos so very much. ❤
Thanks so much for watching again !! So glad to see you !
Apparently Louis XIV wore wigs because he also suffered from syphilis.
Well he was quite bald at an early age indeed !
Apart from the terrible ignorance of most doctors in that era, the awful lack of hygiene made things much worse. Versailles must have been a disgusting place inhabited by foul-smelling people.
You have written XVI instead of XIV in various places.
She might be tired.
I am a Historian and Classicist and believe me it's easy to flip Roman Numerals around. Dyslexia sometimes helps too. But we all get it. Love Nica's fabulous work with these videos.❤
It was a typo. It is now corrected, thank you for pointing it out.
@@TheKingsofFrance just found an amazing book on the Palace of Versailles with official photography by only 5 official photographers! It was out of print for a long time, now I have it on Hardback. I was curious, would you consider doing two historical videos, one about Mssr Vatel and Louis XIV and the mishap at the garden party event where Mssr Vatel committed suicide on his own sword due to disappointing the King as his shipment of fish didn't arrive on time... the actual story has Mssr Vatel getting in the way of Phillippe and his Brotherhood abusing youths from Vatel's kitchens, (one of whom was Louis de Bourbon). The second the most famous Italian babysitter to Louis XIV as a boy and the man who was madly in love with the handsome young prince, later King, and devoted himself to the Creation and implementation of music, dance, opera and the Creation of the Sun King persona. And his sad death because Louis didn't attend a concert he wrote and paid for it of pocket for the King's birthday. The King never showed up, and in a rage Jean Baptiste Lully rammed the tip of his conducting baton into his foot, causing infection and later gangrene, causing his death. It's heavily documented that Louis XIV hated homosexuality but he needed Lully to create his godlike aura and the heart of his Court entertainment. So he used Lully to that end. Lully, in my research also taught Louis de Bourbon the Renaissance Guitar and Viola da Gamba. Lully was a member of the Brotherhood of the Glorious Pederasts, of which the Prince of Conde, Chevalier de Lorraine and Phillippe Duke of Orleans were members, and they used the King's son for their pleasures. Which led to Louis de Bourbon Count of Vermandois being expelled from Court by the King and led to Louis' death at age 16.
I hope you're doing well my dear! Still a very huge fan of your historical videos! ❤️👑🤴👸🇫🇷
Great job.
Thanks so very much ! Glad to see you again !
Much respect to his majesty, to go thru all that, and the will and gumption to run a country! Wow!
Thank you for watching !
I got up early in anticipation of your new video of facts of Marie Antionette. And I started watching another video. After all these years it occurred to me their last name was Capet. I'm sure u have covered it. I hope I spelled it correctly. Hmm. Learn something everyday. Can't wait for your new video ❤
I certainly hope you’ll like it then. Quite nervous now haha.
And yes, you spelled ‘Capet’ correctly !
@TheKingsofFrance I'm sure it will be great. I have notification on. But I set my calendar too.
Hi, awesome live history video I enjoyed it. How are you and Rani your cat doing? I'm doing well. My cat Benjamin says hi to you and cute Rani your cat. He sends his hugs and purrs to you both. My cat sometimes spits up hairball. Does Rani your cat spit up hairball sometimes? The weather in Ontario Canada is warm. How is the weather where you are? Have a great day all your history videos are always wonderful and enjoyable. See you next video 😊 😊
Thank you for being here again. Rani has been unwell and she has had surgery last week. She’s recovering, but we do learn sadly enough that she has reoccurring issues which will keep posing issues. Please hug Benjamin for us !!!
Bravo! Great post, thanks!
Thanks so much ! I hope you’re okay !
I'm fine, thank you for asking! I hope that you are well too. You poured so much passion and research into your posts, week after week, that even this summer I began to ask myself whether this was taking a toll on you.The fact is you achieved a dedicated following in a very niche field and I congratulate you for that. You produced a splendid show, time after time!
OMG, respect to Louis XIV for surviving all this and ruling country at the same time.
Hey my dear. Your main title states Louis XVI (16th) easy mistake. Hope you are well, miss our little chats. I've done more research into Louis de Bourbon Count of Vermandois and discovered much more about him through his Aunt's journals and letters. Greetings from Berlin, Germany! Antonio.
I have altered the mistake. Thanks gor pointing it out !
Wow, he was bad ass to endure all that dreadful pain and discomfort.
Your misspelling of Louis XIV into "xvi" sort of reminds me of my recent problems with my clockmaker. Did you know that there was no (known) watch face in the whole wide world to show the correct Roman 'IV' for four o'clock ? Instead they all show "IIII" instead which is not correct. Relax: it only cost me another five hundred dollars to have the wrong face with "IIII" on it replaced with a freshly carved (?) IV instead. There are still things in this world that can make you happy, don't you think ?
A small typo, I corrected it. And you’re right. I’m curious to see your clock now !
YAYYY NIEKE IS BACK
Thanks for watching again !!
@@TheKingsofFrance YWWWW I MISSED U SO MUCH I HOPE U ARE DOING OKK
Molten iron!!! 😱😱😱
Yup.. ouch, right ?
If the disease will not kill, the doctors will... At a time when simply drinking water instead of wine or beer might finish you off, you'd DREAM of our daily dose of tap-water! So much for the good old days... 😂
ow... many times yet ow ......
Thanks for watching.
❤
❤️
Louis XIV was VERY lucky that he reach 76 he would have died you g France would have been very different right now
👑☀️
Thanks so much for watching and commenting again !
I wonder what he really looked like.
Not as good as he was portrayed. Good to see you Paul !
T
So he must have died young, right?
Nope… he lived a relatively long life !
He did not die until his 70’s. This is said fairly early in the video.
Please check the title of this video. Are you discussing Louis XIV (14) or Louis XVI (16)??
Louis xiv. Typo.
Merci!@@TheKingsofFrance
It was a great and very informative video!
