The most incredible sensation in their concerts is a full stadium singing “You can’t stop me loving myself” at the top of the lungs. It’s like a sense of empowerment
Definitely recommend reacting to the explanation video. For example, Suga is wearing a Snow White shirt because he was getting crap about being so pale, so he is embracing it here.
DKDKTV BTS - Idol Explained by a Korean is definitely a must see to truly understand the genius of this song and music video. Several of their songs and music videos require explanation videos to truly appreciate the depth and genius of their artistry, which is something I love about them 💜
Idol is basically BTS saying F off in a nice way. 😂 They included a lot of things they've been criticised for like very specific glasses, hairstyles, shirts, etc. and were like: You say we always use green screen (they rarely do, btw) - we'll show you green screen. We're too westernised? Let's use traditional Korean *and* African rythms, dancing, and imagery. You don't like Jin's knees? Let's put him in trousers with the knees cut out. RM shouldn't use funny filters during his lives? Filters coming right up... It's basically a huge, continuous FU wrapped in great music and a profound understanding of and belief in themselves. Pure *chef's kiss* 😂 💜
This whole song is a clap back against haters and critics, both in visuals and lyrically. There is so much crammed in, so many references, that I would have to write a book to mention it all. Basically, everything they are doing, and every prop, every clothing item, ever graphic, every set, every drawing, every sound, every dance move has meaning, as is often the case for them. In this case, some of their criticisms were for green screen use and big production - so they dial all that up to 11 here. Don't like it? Here have some more! RM criticized for using cute snap chat filters in livestreams? How do you like them in an MV? Suga called too pale? Wears shiny Snow White sweater. j-hope called too lanky and looks like Bugs Bunny? Wears Bug's sweater and dance with inflatable tube guy. Jimin called too feminine? Does a sexy dance with traditionally feminine Korean feather dance fan. V told he dresses like a grandpa because of his love of classic fashion? Wears goofy grandpa outfit and does a little grandpa suspenders dance. Too colorful you say?? Here - have ALL THE COLORS. And so on. The whole thing is both a celebration of self love and a big FU 🖕to haters.
This MV is in part to respond to BTS critics, some within Sourh Korea, who were saying that the group had become ‘too westernized’. Thats why there are many SK cultural references in this MV that need an explainer. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 th-cam.com/video/IL7PEjk1pys/w-d-xo.htmlsi=7aDFCoH2N4bTbLgt
BTS's roots are in rap. They originally started out as a kpop rap group. Which is why they started out with the first 3 members being rappers for the group. Along the way they decided that they didnt like having imposed barriers on their music and working in a box. They wanted more freedom than that, so they gave themselves permission to expand their sound to whatever their hearts desire at the time. This is a part of what makes BTS so unique and successful.
INFO: BTS have a tendancy to go with the public and media. If they are being criticized or attacked for not being rappers or quality musicians, their lyrics they next release will reflect that. If they are being told they wouldnt do well in the western market, then they have released songs suitable to the western market. I say suitable because to some or alot of army, they find better quality in their native language. Also like with idol, you also have the "you lost your native language now and lost your culture" ergo you have idol being released. For first timers or musicians not family with BTS, Idol can be a poor choice, not for the song itself but because it has alot of cultural sounds, musical instruments and dance moves etc and even the music video itself is full of self awareness and culture. There is BTS Idol explained video if you want to understand more of what I mean. BTS do tend to reflect through their songs the messages they want the public to know or comfort that army needs to hear.
Just feel a need to clarify here that “go with public and media” does not mean “with” - it really means respond to what they see in the public and media. I wasn’t sure that was completely clear here without knowing the actual meaning of this song - responding to people saying they’re too Western and not Korean with “well, let’s see how much Korean stuff I can jam into one song.” Also, in Korea, artists are called “idols” - so it’s not exactly the same meaning there as in the West. The explanation video by DKDKT. And a live performance of this are both must-sees.
I recommend BTS Hip Hop Lover live. And BTS Born Singer live. Both with subtitles. There are two versions of each/ original and updated. Watch the originals first.
To fully appreciate just how great this song is you really should react to DKDKTV EXPLANATION. It does a excellent job do just breaking down the lyrics, but also highlighting the Korean culture references
Please react to Jimin from BTS solo songs. I recommend Set me free pt2 and Lie! Suga already had a song called Set me free, so Jimin called his pt2. The BTS members are always connected with each other :)

Now that you've seen this, time to see a live performance version like the 2018 MMA.
Explanation video is must. The CGI in background has some meaning behind it.
