One of the (many) things that's so fascinating about them is how they could have gone in such a different direction... but if they had I don't think the world would ever have heard of them. From where they started, going the 'kpop boyband' route and playing that game is the only possible way they could've had even a remote chance of reaching the wider world. In many ways they have never fit that mould... but it means there's this huge huge contrast between how they appear to people who know their history and discography vs. the surface image people get from the outside.

BTS is not the usual boy band or even k-pop. Their roots are in hip hop and rap, even though they have widen to cover multiple musical genres now. Their massive 10 years discography is impressive! You'll hardly find any two similar songs or any song that is bad. They wrote most of their songs themselves, if you are wondering. They are real artists and very talented, unlike any out-of-the factory poppy pretty boys boybands. With all talented seven members on their own right, they are a powerhouse and their brotherhood is so lovely to watch. They are now serving in mandatory military enlistment, but will all be back by 2025. Before serving, each member did their solo project. And each project are vastly different from each other. If you don't know they are from the same group, you wouldn't have guessed.
And they are known for their great music, awesome dancing, jaw-dropping performances, beautiful vocals (they actually sound better live than recorded), and deep lyrics. Their songs covers positive and serious themes like mental health, loving yourself, striving against odds, societal expectations, psychological concepts, etc.
They are comprised of 3 rapper (among the best rappers in South Korea), and 4 vocalists. Two of them are actually trained as dancers. But they are also songwriters and producers. Even for other artists. They have amassed around a thousand awards over their 10 years career, if not more.

Plus 12 Billboard Awards, 31Guinness World Records and 5 Grammy nominations, they even smashed the Beatles Record as the only artist to have 3 number 1 Album in less than a year and they did it a wee bit quicker than the Beatles achieved it. This in a time when people don't tend to buy physical album anymore.

Don't be put off by the crazies. As you can see from the comments, 99.9% of ARMY love it when channels find and enjoy BTS music. When you have a fanbase in the millions worldwide, just by the law of averages you will attract the oddballs too! There are some that listen to a BTS track for views but just looking at your channel history you guys really love music and lyrics.
BTS announced their hiatus roughly a year before enlistment so that gave them time to go off an explore and release official solo work (The 3 rappers had already released full albums but as they were not official they are called 'mixtapes'). I honestly can't wait for you to get into their solo work. You will really see how diverse they are.
ARMY loves to experience discovering BTS all over again with new reactors - we are jealous!💜

This song is inspired by a quote from Martha Graham: "...a dancer dies twice---once when they stop dancing...and this death is the more painful."
Their lyrics is about how they are scared of one day loosing their passion as artists for music and since music is such a big part of who they are it would feel as if they are dying which if you take the quote into consideration would feel much more painful than actual death to them.
They have an orchestral version of this song with a performance video of a professional contemporary dance crew.

BTS always said they would served when called upon as every other abled man in South Korea. Jin was the first to go in in Dec 2022 and is due to be discharged next month! J hope went in April 2023 and will get out this October. The rest went in at the end if 2023 and will be discharged June if 2025. They are supposed to get back together as a group then, so we look forward to more music and hopefully a tour after that!!!💜

The seemingly discordant instrumentation in the beginning is a traditional Korean instrument, a 12 stringed gayageum which resembles a Japanese koto. BTS occasionally incorporates traditional Korean instruments in their production of their songs just as they incorporate traditional Korean clothes into their on stage clothing.

BTS debuted as a HIP HOP IDOL group, not a typical boy band. It was uncommon in the South Korean Idol system (K-POP Industry) for the IDOLs to write and produce their own music, and do it with HIP HOP, and not just HIP HOP, it was USA Western Classic HIp Hop styles. They got a lot of push back and hate because of it, especially because RM and SUGA came from underground hip hop before signing with their label (Big Hit Entertainment) in 2010. BTS debuted on June 13, 2013, and they didn't get their first music show win until their second year, where they won their first #1 award. (How Korean IDOLS measure their success is to win #1 on a music show). Then they started succeeding more at the award shows and were starting to get international recognition. They were with a small independent label that almost went bankrupt, and that win in 2015 saved them from having to disband. I won't go into their story because that is a book of information, but just know that they dealt with many obstacles, hate, racism, xenophobia, rumors and lies from the media and the K-Pop system. BTS and ARMY survived it together and came out stronger. Because of that, the relationship between BTS and ARMY is very strong and special. And ARMY's can be very protective of BTS because of it. Thanks for reacting to Black Swan, it's the song that made me ARMY. I resonated with the lyrics.
    Martha Graham Quote:
*"A Dancer dies Twice, once when they stop dancing. And the first death is the more painful."*
BTS's black swan was inspired by this quote and the movie Black Swan. RM wrote is and he said he cried when he was writing it. It's about the fear of losing your passion for your art, if someday you no longer can write the lyrics, or dance, or create music. It's also about learning about how to accept the darker sides of yourself (shadows) and knowing that in order to be whole, you need to accept the dark, undesireable sides of yourself, because they are a part of you also. You can learn to accept that and not let it control you. I think that is the symbolism in the last scene. Jungkook waited for his shadow to be under control, and then he walked away.
BTS are known for crossing and fusing many different genre's into their discography, but they will always stay true to their roots, which are Hip Hop and RnB.

  • @reneezemlock7880
    @reneezemlock7880 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +39

It's not that they aren't technically a "boy band"... they are. The problem lies in the connotation that phrase has in the Western mind-set. We hear "boy band" and automatically assign an esthetic and sound; we place them into a known contextual box before ever listening to them and when we do, it's with a biased ear. This idea of what a boy-band is/should be actually prevents people from even listening at all or colors their opinion while listening and it can take awhile for them to admit BTS is NOT what they considered a bb to be. It also makes reactors assume the most surface level meaning of songs instead of looking into the lyrics and considering the deeper meanings of their songs.
Thank you for realizing this sooner rather than later. :)

I came from decades of boy bands.. starting with New kids on the block, take that, boyzone etc... I skipped the 1d phenomenon as I was in my 20s? ( I don't know their active years) And focusing on my job and adult life.
I found BTS in my mid 30s mentioned as a boy band. My first thought, the very first one when I clicked on the Fake Love MV was " this doesn't sound like a boy band, the production is too detailed for a boy band... " And "the MV looks too elaborate for a boy band (the attention to details) and definitely they don't dance like a boy band"
I was really confused. So I put them on the BTS box (nothing or no one like them) .
      So refreshing and unique.
      💜

Thanks for your wonderful reaction. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
This song explores the profound and deeply personal fears that artists face regarding the loss of their passion for their craft. The song serves as a raw and introspective reflection on the struggles and vulnerabilities that come with the pursuit of artistic expression.
One of the most striking lines, "If this can no longer resonate, no longer make my heart vibrate, then like this may be how I die my first death," speaks to the fear of emotional and artistic death-the moment when an artist feels disconnected from their work and can no longer draw meaning or fulfillment from it.
BTS uses "Black Swan" to share a universal message with their listeners: that the fear of losing one's passion is a natural part of the creative process, but it’s also an experience that can lead to deeper understanding and renewed inspiration. Through their introspective lyrics, haunting music, and expressive choreography, BTS captures the essence of the artist's journey, making "Black Swan" a deeply resonant and powerful piece.
The choreography for "Black Swan" is equally significant in conveying the song's message. The contemporary dance movements are fluid and expressive, symbolizing the ebb and flow of an artist's emotions. The performance often includes movements that depict struggle, surrender, and the quest for liberation, visually representing the inner turmoil of an artist grappling with their fears.

The only thing that changed in 2015 was their image, their sound did begin to include more electronic influences, but the mix of melodic and hiphop was not something new in 2015.

Hi 👋 With "Black Swan," BTS divulge their most harrowing shadow yet, one that any person who lives for making art faces: losing the passion for creating.
"A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful." Martha Graham. This quote is at the root of the sentiments inlaid in "Black Swan." Much like a dancer feels purposeless when they can no longer express themselves through dance, BTS contends that the day that music no longer fills them with the same passionate fire as before, or even if there came a day when they stopped creating music - what they feel is their life's purpose - it would feel like death.
RM sings, "If this can no longer resonate / No longer make my heart vibrate / Then this may be how I die my first death."
Once again, BTS affirm that despite their countless record-breaking accolades, the wealth they've amassed, and their ever-increasing fame, they are artists. What means most to them is the art - music, visuals, dances - that they create.
    💜
    Have a great day.

Hi guys, thanks for reacting to BTS. In my humble opinion, I think everyone involved with music should at least once in their life take a look at the work of this historic group, regardless of their musical tastes. Skipping a little about their music, take a look at the video of the boys' military enlistment, there are three videos. The first by Jin, the second by J.Hope and the third by RM, V, Jimin and Jungkook. What I mean by that, it's a little shortcut for you who are entering this rabbit hole to know the friendship and affection of these seven boys who learned to respect, admire and love each other unconditionally through work, believe me, they are real and examples of human beings.

BTS started as a hip-hop group!!!!!
Listen to their first 2 songs.
The music is meant to sound like classic Korean instruments, like an erhu and gayageum. I love that BTS incorporates traditional instruments.
Both the movie Black Swan and this mv are based on the famous ballet Swan Lake. It's about 2 swans, one evil/black and one good/white. In most modern productions, both roles are danced by one dancer. It symbolizes the struggle within between light and dark. BTS has a whole series of songs based on the shadowself.

BTS’ albums are thematic. Black Swan is in the Map of the Soul series. This series encompasses the psychological concepts of Carl Jung. Jung believed that there are three parts to our personalities: the persona, shadow, and ego. Black Swan is in the shadow realm. Our shadow selves are where our doubts and fears lie. Here, BTS is singing about their fear of losing their passion for music.

Indeed, BTS started off as a Hiphop group in 2013. You’re right, this song is about struggle: what happens when artists lose their passion/vision. The dancer dies a first painful death when he stops dancing (quote from Martha Graham). And yes, interpretative dance is part of their repertoire, although their usual choreo is more Hiphop. Do check out Born Singer (mash LIVE From 2015/2017) to understand their drive to make music. See link below. They performed it LIVE again for their 9th anniversary in 2022, with a chill mature vibe.

When it comes to dance four of them are in the dance line with J-Hope who is a street dancer and Jimin who studied contemporary dance as the only two with previous dance training. J-Hope just did a documentary showing his roots in dance from his days with Neuron back home in Gwangju up to his present position as dance captain in BTS.

Jin who is the oldest will be returning soon from the military with the remaining guys coming back over the next year. We are living for 2025. In the meantime we are reminiscing, enjoying people still finding them, and enjoying the new stuff they have left for us. RM ‘s album is the latest.

BTS initially started as a hiphop group, and their core is really hiphop. They explored diff genres and grow their craft with their hard work and willingness to adapt to change. Their first 2 members come from the underground hiphop, RM (the leader) and SUGA. And their 3rd member came from street dancing background. so their hiphop influence is really solid.
Black Swan is from their Map of the Soul: 7 album which dive into Carl Jung’s Psychological theory of the Persona, Shadow & Ego. so this is part of the shadow aspect, their fear of losing their passion for music which they love the most. Another great song in this album is ON, pls check out the Kinetic Manifesto Film video (which is more like their performance vid coz there is also another vid, the official MV which is story line based). thank you for your reaction 💜

Felt the need to come in and correct this, they never had the opportunity to NOT serve, rather that after a while of politicians using BTS' name to just try to get a push on their political agendas on exemptions and as it got closer and closer to Jins (the oldest members) 28th birthday (which you have to enlist by) it was eventually decided by the Korean Government that artists who receive the honours of getting the Order of Cultural Merit (which BTS had) or an achievement of equal value would be able postpone their enlistment by two years. Jin used that extra time for the company to plan more for them being gone, as (this part is speculation but I fully believe they were hoping for exemption even if it was never said) the government HAD been waiving around talks of exemption for a while but it never went anywhere, only eventually resulting in that two year postponement amendment. But Jin also cancelled and enlisted before the two years had completed leaving for the military on his own terms, the other members following soon after.

This song was prereleased as a MV before this. Watch the Black Swan Art Film. It was accompanied with classical instruments and it was daned by a ballet/ contemporary dance troupe. They danced it with bare feet.
There is a behind the scenes reaction video of BTS watching this art film. They commented how Jimin should dance the lead like in the art film. They knew that Jimin's training in contemporary dance was why he should do all the interpretive dancing.
BTS debut THEIR version of this song along with their dance choreography on the Late Late show with James Corden. This MV was then larer made in this theater and them dancing bare feet as the official music MV.

I love this! So this entire Album is based off of Jungian Psychology. You can see the motifs of the Jungian archetypes throughout. (Archetypes like Shadow, Ego, Self, Amina and Animus etc) In this music video there's a lot of the Shadow archetype. The album is Called "Map of the Soul" Which is based of the book by Murray Stein who wrote about Carl Jung's Psychology. The Map of the Soul album expounds upon how we have multiple layers to our human Psyche. And at time our different selves can be at odd against each other but it's all apart of who we are and how we must balance those different parts out Psyche. Each BTS album is connected to each other to tell a bigger story. Many time in the stories of their video they play individuals but at tie they are playing the same person if that make sense. But yeah there is so much symbolism in just about every music video that connects it all to a bigger story.

Also, they didn't start as a boy band. They started as a hip hop group. You will find a lot of hip hop influence in their music.

New here, I'd love to see you reacting to more BTS. I fell into this awesome rabbit hole four years ago and have zero regrets!
They are all excellent and complete artists. Their solos are all masterpiece! Most BTS lyrics are messages of empowerment, self-confidence, and resilience given in different genres, rhythms, structures... One thing I can assure you: in their huge production (400+ songs), there is not even a single bad song. Of course, some can not be your cup of tea, but the quality is undeniable.
Their MVs are other must. Most are shorts movies because they are storytellers, good ones!

BTS was originally intended to be a Hip Hop group. The first 2 members, RM and Suga started out in underground rappers.the third member added, JHope started as an underground dancer, and he learned rapping from RM and Suga, so a lot of their songs have deep hip hop roots. The four vocal line singers, Jin, Jimin, V, And Jungkook were added. Jin never sang or dances, he stared out wanting to be an actor. Jimin started out as a contemporary dancer. bTS always maintained that they would serve their mandatory military service, but other K-pop companies tired to use BTS as a rallying point to have K-pop starts exempt. I think you would like Mic Drop the Steve Aoki remix. If you want to see what the rap line is like, Outro Tear, Cyphers 1-4, Ugh, and Ddaeng are great starting points. The vocal line you can’t go wrong with The Truth Untold, House of Cards, and Zero O’Clock. BTS will have sub units within their discography, were maybe some songs are only rap line songs, others only vocal line, and a combination of both. Plus they each have their own solo work, which is amazing. RM I would suggest Joke, Do You, Wild Flower. Suga ( who goes by August D - Suga spelled backwards with DT representing Daegu Town where he is from) you can’t go wrong with his self titled track August D, Snooze, and his trilogy- Daechwita, Haegeum, and Amygdala JHope Daydream, Arson, What If, and More. Vocal line: Jin- Moon, The Astronaut, Epiphany, and Abyss. Jimin - Set Me Free, Lie, Serendipity, and Filter. V (Taehyung) - Slow Dancing, Love Me Again, Singularity, and Stigma Jungkook- Standing Next to You, Begin, My Time, 7, and Stay Alive. Honestly this is just the tip of the rabbit hole you go down in with BTS, as they have a lot to see. I would also recommend watching 2021 Festa.

The production by PDogg (amazing producer who has been with them from the start) uses the autotune to make it sound like their voices are coming from deep under the ocean, which they reference in the lyrics. We also classify this song as a classical piece as there is a classical instrumental version with it's own MV featuring a dance trope only. It's stunning. The members also reacted to that which is adorable.
This song is from the album Map of the Soul: 7 which is inspired by Carl Jung's philosophy of the persona, the shadow and the ego. This is one of the "shadow" songs onthe album hence the shadow disappearing at the end. The album preceding this one is Map of the Soul: Persona. MOTS7 features all those Persona songs and then new ones reflecting the shadow and the ego.
They are barefoot because it is inspired by the Martha Graham quote. She is considered the "creator" of modern or contemporary dance and they traditionally are all danced using bare feet as opposed to the ballet shoes.

After that maybe a live performance of Butterfly (because it shows off the vocal line more). For a more ‘boy band’ type feel I definetly suggest the 2021 Festa Room Live, where they mashup several of their songs and you can see them interacting a little more. You guys caught an important aspect - this piece is performed barefoot!
Many Western audience members would associate barefoot dancing with modern or contemporary dance. That alludes to:
    * Martha Graham’s quote about the dancer’s “first death” that other ARMY have mentioned here in the comments. That quote appeared at the beginning of this song's debut on TH-cam within an art film. (This music video was released later.)
    * Graham is considered at least one of the foremost contemporary dancers, if not one of the founders of contemporary dance.
The introduction of “Black Swan” in the aforementioned art film in the contemporary style by MN Dance Company (Art Film eabove) was performed barefoot.
    * Vulnerability, entrenched in this song’s message.
Further; this barefoot dancing was often performed live by BTS in stage sets representing nature, so Koreans would read a deeper context.
TH-camr 바이스톰, in interpreting another barefoot dance performance by BTS member j-hope, believed that it pointed to the Korean characteristic of Pung-Ryu (풍류).
Pung-Ryu, which can literally be translated as “wind-waterflow”, has a variety of meanings where life, art, and nature intertwine:
    *Religious rituals
    *Closeness with nature
*Freedom and the expression of interior freedom
*Artistic expression such as writing poetry, creating or enjoying music, visual arts, and dancing.
Pung-Ryu is fundamental to not only the Korean artistic tradition, but to the identity of Korea and Koreans themselves.
Thus, merely by the choice to dance barefoot amid their Black Swan stage set, BTS provides a rich context for this story; essentially embodying the vulnerable artist.
Thanks for letting me share a bit. I'm a former dancer, so this song really speaks to me. When we lose our art, it is truly our first death.

The South Korean government was trying to find a way to pardon BTS from the enlistment, since BTS themselves are a measurable part of the South Korean GDP, but they were kind of dangling it, since they weren't sure how it would be received by Korean citizens that have to enlist (I believe). However, BTS had said for years that they would proudly serve, and they all enlisted without giving the government the chance to pardon them. All the members are in physical service, except Suga (real name Yoongi) who is doing more office-focused work because of a long time shoulder injury that he didn't get surgery for until 2020, around 8 years after he sustained it

The decision to serve in the military was made by BTS themselves. The previous government was pro-BTS but that party lost the last elections. When the new party won I knew that the 50-50 chance to get a military exemption was lost because the new government was anti-BTS and was voting against their exemption (hence the stalemate 50-50 thing). The new government pretended to support BTS but was just toying the idea of an exemption. They were milking that for votes and better public opinion, also exploiting BTS - such as the Busan concert which was a national outreach project and BTS has agreed to perform for free, but at the last minute the government said that BTS must pay the cost of staging the concert, everything from rental of venue to staging and whatever. They also keep delaying the exemption decision and it was hard for BTS to plan for anything. So BTS probably said screw it, we gonna serve, good luck with your votes. And they smartly turned the Busan concert into their farewell concert, BTS fans pay nothing to attend, tickets were assigned via a global raffle. At the end of the concert they dropped the bombshell - "we gonna enlist in military". BTS - 1, politicians - 0. LMAO.

6:46 they started as a hip hop group and expanded.
Black Swan is a ballet. This song addresses the fear that artists have of losing either their drive or ability to produce art. It’s based on a quote by a legendary choreographer Martha Graham; “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the more painful.”
BTS writes most of their own songs and they’re ALWAYS deep and multidimensional.

    • @ruthfischer7615

Swan Lake is the ballett but the movie Black Swan also turns around this piece.
The most interesting thing is that the ballerina playing the princess also traditonally dances the daughter of the (evil) sorcerer who is disguised as the princess and the expression of both characters is exact opposit which makes it a tricky role to dance.
The movie is about a ballerina who is challenged to dance the "black swan" better by exploring her darker side. It drives her crazy.
We are also in the "shadow" part of self like defined by the psycholgist Carl Jung. The part of ourself that we even hide from ourself, that can keep us up at night and holds everything we try to get rid og by pushing it deeper into our unconscious.
But to "know ourself" we need to accept this part of us, too.
Since the "shadow part" was considered too dark it was put on the full album - otherwise Black Swan would have been the main drop of a "shadow" album.
Without "knowing ourself" how can we "love ourself" after all?
On is the song that solves the conflict and is the full acceptance of self with both sides: the conscious - specifically the Persona - and the unconscious - the shadow to get as close as we can to our "true self". since this is never quiet archieved we are naming that state Ego.
      💜

[4:36] It was the original Big Hit motto : Music & Artist for Healing
[5:25] The shadow play starts. Shadows have diffrent meaning with different members. Suga (rapper, and second member), who starts, has a full song named Shadow where shadow is his (mainly?) professional and private (less?) greed.
[5:28] "Very hiphoppy" We continue next to RM (BTS's leader, first member, around who the whole group was formed originally as a rap agroup, rapper)
    - shadow play continues with RM.
[8:22] Their lyric "Film it now" is not a typo, but do you hearhow they pronoune it it sounds more like "feeling it now" I'm kinda betting it is double meaning if how they live camera to their face often 20/7/360 we see everything they feel, often live.
[10 :20] Youngest JK ends the shadow play. He is BTS's main vocal and also part of the dance-line.
Song is about artist losing their passion or skill to do their art. Classical string instumental version of the song starts with the quote from Martha Graham : “A dancer dies twice - once when they stop dancing, and this first death is more painful.” The lyrics also refer to this quote in the beginning.
    *
There is also pairing song to this song about (musician) losing ones art, the other-side-of-the-coin -song: Dionysus, where the artist is drunkenly in love with their art when everything goes perfectly..

Black Swan is about the fear of losing passion for music, and the relationship between artists and their craft. Notice how the production on the vocals, especially at the beginning, are somewhat muffled and compressed, as though underwater. Their production often has clever hidden meanings and synergy with lyrics. This idea is echoed in lyrics where they reference being stuck on the ocean floor, so, in the dark and under pressure. At the start they are on the stage under a spotlight with a large balance of dark space above them and around them, again as though stuck with the weight of the dark ocean pressing down on them. Choreography also echoes this feeling of being stuck, feet dragging, despair and struggle, as well as swan moves. Two of the members wear corsets, further echoing this idea of being under pressure. Notice also the driving beat like a heartbeat pounding in their eras as with fear, as they also mention in the lyrics.
The shadows represent their fears. In the beginning they are large, overwhelming, oppressive and moving on their own. Throughout the video, the shadows become more manageable, smaller and more integrated back into the guys. At the end the final shadow folds into itself and Jungkook walk out confidently. Also, their outfits go from white under a harsh spotlight in the beginning, to black silhouettes at the end, as they become the black swans and their shadows reintegrate. Similarly, Jin's reflections in the mirrors do not move with him, are not under his control. A black swan as a concept means a sudden, detrimentally life changing event, and the film Black Swan is about a dancer driven mad by the pressures of her work. Both meanings apply in this song.

It's a song about an artist's fear of loosing his love for his art

You need to watch BTS - 'On' official mv, not to be confused with their kinetic manifesto

Thanks for your reaction , you guys are fun .
    Some BTS recommendation :
*Run bulletproof live or dance practice
    *Bulletproof the eternal
    *ON kinetic manifesto film
    *Louder than bombs
By the way your song (in my head)is good 👍

BTS is their own genre so don’t even bother to compare them with othe K-pop groups❤❤😂😂😂Love and appreciate all 7. Each is unique and super talented
