CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When an alien probe explores the basement, Ray (Tom Cruise) uses a mirror to confuse it.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
An ordinary man has to protect his children against alien invaders in this science fiction thriller, freely adapted from the classic story by H.G. Wells. Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is a dockworker living in New Jersey, divorced from his first wife Mary Ann (Miranda Otto) and estranged from his two children Rachel and Robbie (Dakota Fanning and Justin Chatwin), of whom he has custody on weekends. On one such visitation, looking after the kids becomes a little more difficult when, after a series of strange lighting storms hit his neighborhood, Ray discovers that a fleet of death-ray robotic spaceships have emerged nearby, part of the first wave of an all-out alien invasion of the Earth. Transporting his children from New York to Boston in an attempt to find safety at Mary Ann's parents' house, Ray must learn to become the protector and provider he never was in marriage. Also starring Tim Robbins, War of the Worlds was directed by Steven Spielberg, who had been planning the project for years, but set it aside until a wave of "alien invasion" films (led by Independence Day) had run its course.

God the sound effects from the probe, the tripods, and everything else is just amazing. Weird thinking this was 11 years ago
tbh the probe sounds eerily similar to a sentinel in no mans sky (Sean Murray is liar)
And the animation is pretty damn good for 2005.
Bat-tastic Success Spielberg was the first to use CGI. So he's always a step ahead .Not to mention he prefers 70 mm lenses for his films which looks fantastic.

It’s so freaking underrated, and this is probably the best scene in the movie imo

This is one of the most intense scenes in the movie. It's like you're being dehumanized and can't feel comfortable in your own skin. The movie should've got a MUCH better rating than a 6.5/10 on IMDB. I'd give it an 8.0 minimum. I like the simple retelling of the story; a man visits with his children and he has to be the ultimate Dad and do whatever it takes to protect them. There aren't that many family-based Sci-Fi movies.
+Jonathan's Piano dude who cares about the rating when it made more than 500 million dollars
Pierzing.glint1sh7 Agree!
The Greek Pianist i would say its a high 7 out of ten but i still really enjoyed it
It got that rating because of the ending critics did not like the ending
David Ruelas Why not? I thought it had a happy ending and it was very triumphing
I swear, my heart did not beat this whole scene
Then you are dead by now, rest in piEce.
I feel too
How are you alive?

1:15 i noticed a little mistake from Tom Cruise in the movie. His fingers were still on the mirror when the probe came. The probe could have seen that before it left. They would have been busted.
Nick A07 Maybe the Martians are not so observant. They did neglect to look directly behind the mirror, after all.
Good point. But i thought in books and the movies, they were supposed to be smarter than us humans..
Nick A07 Well, it is a very unfamiliar atmosphere.
It would explain why they could not noticed what really can kill them.
Nick A07 Indeed.
My god that kid...
she scared you would be to!
It's just a prank bro
I wanted her to die so bad
Guys, you know that shows just how good of an actor she is?
@@eternalnjem She had a better action than Tom Cruise, lol.
She's a kid, come on!
God this scene was so intense for me when I was a kid, it got to a point where I had to skip over it to avoid the sheer stress of the scene. well done Spielberg
In any apocalypse, kids always will be a hinderance.
Mienboi821510 No, they are the only future for mankind.
So? Take the kids away. In a apocalypse, kids will be a hinderance. The world won't be the same again anyway. I'm pretty sure you guys watched The Walking Dead series as well as played the games. Nothing good comes from having kids during an apocalypse or raising one. Every human being will kill to survive, as well as keep themselves alive as long as possible. Newborns/really young kids won't benefit anything during survival of the fittest. This is my opinion, so don't get butt-hurt.
Mienboi821510
The killing between humans in an apocalypse is unrealistic. In the walking dead or many other apocalypse like movies the opposite is shown to have tension, but in reality they would tend to work together. The smaller the groups the easier it is to survive.
+OpenGL4ever, you just contradicted yourself. Smaller the group, the better. But, what will benefit you when you're running out of resources while trying to produce/raise a baby/kid in the process? "Future of mankind" is the logical way, but that will be another several years ahead. We are overpopulated as it already is. What will happen when food production suddenly stopped?
And man-childs.
Brilliant direction, writing, and performance demonstrated here. That mirror shot that then pans to a 50/50 with the actors on one half of the screen and the snake on the other = chef's kiss.
Love how Ray is just holding Rachel in his arms the whole time so she feels safe. The acting is great in this scene even though there's no dialogue.
The whole scene in the basement was most horrifying breath defying scene ever. I can only imagine how people watched it in theatres ❤️
When i was a kid iwas always scared that an alien probe is going to stare at me when i wake up after seeing this scene in the movie
It did to me, now i'm their slave in their ship
If it did that would be sleep paralysis
One time a probe was sleeping and it woke up to me looking at him
Honestly the probe would be my best friend or a pet.
Just be sure you didn't watch "Fire in the Sky"
I want a video game JUST like that, playing hide and seek in a horror theme inside a basement. Are there any games like that?
Alien isolation
+ZX outlast although set in an insane asylum should give you the hide and seek feel and a good story

This film has some of the best visual effects I've ever seen.
Its cause of the expert lighting. They chose places to film where lighting would allow to conceal the bad parts of the effect. This highlights only the good parts of the effects, making the effects just seem good in general.
I love when the aliens are just checking human stuff, like photos, and even bicycle. They were a bit shocked when the bicycle fell off 😂
There’s actually a theory that the aliens never invented wheels in the civilization, therefore when they saw the bike wheel they were perplexed by it and spooning it causing it to fall down
@@socomgaming1014 It's hard to believe that they had ultra modern weapons but not wheels...
@Gokul Raj it’s written I think in the book. The planet the aliens supposedly came from had a surface that wasn’t suitable for wheels, therefore they never found the need to invent them, but rather mechanical structures like the legs on the tripods were more suited to them
@@socomgaming1014 in the book someone describes their machinery as sliding rods and frictionless things, bc they never invented the wheel
@@socomgaming1014 I think it's because wheels need roads and they were probably too lazy to make roads, also legs are perfect because they don't need a smooth terrain.
The way the tripod and those worm things are moving is just amazing! They're machines though they move like living creatures.
I like how the probe's look is a callback to the "cobra" heat rays from the '53 movie. Even the kind of hissing droning it makes sounds a bit like the noise the heat ray would make before firing. Nice touch.

I have had this scene in my memory since I first saw this movie (I was around 5). I couldn't remember what the movie was called, all I could remember was this scene. It's been 17-18 years and I've finally found it.
Imagine having a whole world to dominate but you gotta stop and look at yourself in the mirror first

This film is an underrated masterpiece
Probe: daymm I lookin good tonight
Steven Spielberg sure knows how to bring tension in his movies, no matter if they are horror or not.
Considering how sensitive to sounds the probe was, you'd think the splashing of the water at 0:54 would draw its attention.

Yeah, I was terrified watching this scene… not a good time
I was a teenager watching this film in the cinema and it was one of the first times I felt true suspense like this.
People say this is always the weakest section in the film. How??? This is one of the most nerve wracking scenes since the raptors in the kitchen!
1:24 yeah i'm perfect I know
I absolutely adore this movie.
This scene literally sent me out of the theater crying in fear when I was like 9
Literally one of the best "hide and seek" scenes in a long time

NOT MY BLOOD!!!
The aliens have lasers and optics on their tripods, yet they don't know what a reflection is lol
I think the idea was that the mirror would give the probe a reminder of its situational awareness, since it (heard?) something being knocked over. It's possible Cruise thought that the probe seeing its reflection would make it think IT knocked the thing over, since it likely doesn't have sensors along the... tentacle (shudder), otherwise it would've likely detected Axe-Man's proximity to it. It's also conceivable that the probe was trying to run various analyses on the mirror, because it didn't remember it being there before and was curious how it appeared, or detected heat signatures on it, but was failing to run those analyses due to the reflective nature of the mirror. You can be sure something with its capabilities has seen reflections before (it has a perfect lens, after-all). Could also just be checking itself for damage or other anomalies. Just some educated guesses.
Besides, more to the point, how does it not see Cruise's fingers moving at the top of the mirror's frame at 1:14 when the probe literally looks at them while they're moving? Maybe you're right, and it is just dumb after-all. I mean they get defeated by bacteria, of all things. Clearly they didn't do enough planning!
What is more surprising. They dont have infrared camera to see. Lol
@@algladyou can travel between planets, can build powerful weapons, can use long flexible floating probes to find survivors to eliminate them, restricts sensors to audio and visual spectrum.
It's a larger version of the one they have waiting for you on the mothership!
When your on your ds at 2 in the morning and your parents are in your room to see if your sleeping
I almost died when her shoe slid across the floor!!
1:24 I like how the alien is interested with its own reflection lol
Well to be fair, maybe they didnt have mirrors in their society, it could be a moment of curiosity, or perhaps investigating the illusion it creates
Yeah, a species so advanced that they have conquered inter-galactic travel getting fooled by a mirror!
How's it possible for your leg to magically full extend outward in that situation. The girl literally was in best fiddle position but still made it look like she had to do some stretching
I think this robot came from space
Imagine a actual Tripod invasion and being in a Basement and this happening
Spielberg's 70 millimeter lenses always makes his film look good.
I’ve seen this movie a thousand times and this scene still makes me think their gonna get caught😂🤧
Love how the probe looks like the heat Ray from the 1956 War of the Worlds movie
Tripod’s drone scanner: *sees a mirror*
Tripod’s drone scanner: what in the magic is this
1:25 the probe got distracted at how beautiful it looked in the mirror! XD
This is a homage to the original War of the Worlds where Dr. Forrester hides in a farmhouse while a martian probes the wreckage and hits the camera with a wooden plank.
It is true almost all the farm scenes are the same
It happens in the book, and ends with the death of the curate.
This a Sci-Fi movie I definitely watch more than once. There are some scenes in this movie that leave me at the edge of my seat.
I have seen enough hentai to know where this is going.

Can’t believe he escaped Shawshank only to have to deal with aliens 👽😆
I had a similar dream again about the tripods. I was at home until I heard them blaring in the distance. Me and my mum hid behind my den (that was taken down a long time ago), but unfortunately, my mum was slow so I had no choice but to leave her and run to hide in our shed down the bottom of the garden and tried to lock the door. However, I was soon caught by an alien probe that came through the gap between the doors. So I literally had to run for my life until I met my doom: it was a tripod with heat rays, not tentacles, standing behind our archway opposite our house that disintegrated me into dust! It only hurt for a brief moment, until I saw whiteness in my eyes as I floated away freely into the air...
Dude I would have dreams about this all the time when I was younger
