This car does cause one problem for Porsche: They're promoting the hell out of the Carrera T, calling it the "driver's car", while that car is 200 lbs heavier, has slightly less power, has the engine cantilevered out the back, and is, what, $30k more than this?
Luckily, 99% of people are moronic and think a Cayman isn't a real Porsche. They'd happily pay twice as much for a bloated 911 that is an inferior sports-car.
@@Chainwhips Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond always used to say during the early CHM Top Gear days that people who buy Boxsters or Caymans are those who can't afford to buy 911s.

I got in my GTS last week and what a wonderful thing it is, I loved driving it and everything about it, sadly salt on UK roads means it’s sitting in the garage till spring.
The 718 Cayman has all the elements of the European cars we all grew up with and loved. From the gauges, the light switch, and all the controls to the gearbox, the engine, the brakes and the road feel. It’s the real deal.
I own a 2021 Spyder and just picked up my ‘25 Boxster GTS 4.0. Both have manuals. I’ve owned several 911s including a 2018 GT3 Touring. I sold all the 911s because for street driving I enjoy the 718s much more. I also own an Emira which is the car that will leave before the Porsches. Chris is correct…..get one while you can!! YMMV

Best Cayman GTS 4.0 review on TH-cam. You hit all the nuances that most reviewers don’t catch like how the GTS allows you to dance. I test drove GT4 and it had too much grip I ended up buying the GTS manual. They actually made less GTS’s compared to the GT4 so I guess you can say it’s more rare!
Owned the 718 GTS, certainly didn’t hate it, it was amazing. The car is labelled as a 718 in reference to a 4 pot they built way back when. You are right, it wasn’t as raspy or pure as the flat 6 but it had a ton of torque which was nice. Now own the 718 GT4 and love it.
Long gearing issue isn't that big of an issue. You can get demans Motorsports or Sharkwerke if you really wanted shorter gearing. I'm never disappointed with the 4.0
If you need to pay that much to get it fixed…. On top of how much it already costs… that’s a big issue. A slow infotainment system is not that big of an issue.
Everybody seems to know better than Porsche engineers 🧑💻 Porsche flat six has higher top speed even the base Cayman hits 165-8 mph and the gearing makes perfect sense on the autobahn!
Great review. My 2022 Spyder manual is by far the best car I’ve ever owned, will never sell it. I’ve owned 3 911s including a 991.2 GT3 and again, the Spyder (with a Kline inconnel exhaust) is my favorite of them all. Every drive up in the Smokey Mountains early in the morning with the top down confirms it for me. Great review, you “get it.”
Picked up mine last year after a 2 year wait and could not be happier. I'm sick of the gearing complaints - It's not a problem to me because you don't need to floor it to redline every second you drive it. Shifting up to 5 or 6K is still just as fun since there is gobs of torque, and if it's really a problem for people, that's what DeMans Motorsport is for. You can get it regeared for like ~$12K . The infotainment screen does not bother me at all because look at all the new cars coping each other with the dual screens that got rid of the analog tach and the hvac controls and other buttons for that matter. The trendy tacked on ipad sucks in newer cars too. All of the buttons/switches/knobs have a nice tactile click and excellent feedback just like the clutch and gearbox. All my previous cars were older so to me it's still nice and new and works very well. LOVE this car!!!! A future classic and long term keeper for sure
Agree 100% on the gearing. Yes it’s long ratios but you don’t need to floor it all of the time. Maybe if you track it all the time it would not be ideal but for the road it’s perfect, which is what this car is for
I have a Boxster 25 year anniversary, with a manual transmission, which is a 4.0 gts with some extra options. It is the best car i have ever owned. It puts a smile on my face every time i drive it. NO EV, no matter how fast it is, will give you that feeling when you rev out the engine till 7800and drop it in the next gear. There is nothing like it and yes the interior is a bit old fashion, but who cares when you hear that engine sing 😊
Chris, you captured in such a full way the brilliance this car in manual offers. The 22 Cayman GTS 4.0 6MT I had remains one of my faves of all time. You were bang on with some interesting points that I have never seen come up in the ENDLESS 4.0 reviews I have watched. You know your shit! Subscribed!

Hahaha the skitzo-sketch in the beginning was fun! Great video and fair assessment! I really get you, it is the perfect mix between driving fun and usability, I think you are so on the nose with that, while I love the GTR 3 and 4, but we do not go drive the track every day, if you are made of money, sure have both but else I think the GTS is where it is at in a lot of ways!
I went to my local Porsche dealership one day and drove both the Cayman and 911 back to back. The Cayman is superior. The weight in a 911 is biased too far rearward. The weight balance in the Cayman is optimal, much like a mid-engined Ferrari. At some point I want to test drive an older air-cooled 911 or 912 with a smaller engine, because I have a hunch that those are lighter and more nimble with less rear weight bias. That is when Porsche first earned its reputation. If you love a Cayman, you would really love a modern mid-engined Ferrari. Having a smaller engine right behind your kidneys is perfect. I bet the Lotus Emira handles great as well.
I own a 2024 GTS 4.0. I like driving the car. I do not go fast yet drive casually & carefully. It handles real well with both performance and all weather tires.
Do people really say nine-eighty seven or nine-eighty one? It sounds very unusual, I always thought it was 9-8-1, 9-8-7, although exception is seven-eighteen which has been relatively interchangeable with 7-1-8
I'm not so much into Cayman, but Porsche got things right with the Boxster GTS 4.0. You have that glorious 911 engine but still have the same convertible roof mechanism as any other Boxster below it. The 718 Spyder's roof is an absolute crap!
Absolutely agree, a flat six Boxster is Porsche's sweet spot. Hopefully the electric or hybrid next gen car learns this lesson and goes with a small flat six next to the batteries.
Really excellent video, just right. I would, however, warn against looking down on the McPherson struct, suspension architecture, because you only have to drive a 991.2 GT3/GT3 RS to realise the limits of that approach are higher than any street car could ever need.
The 718 GTS 4.0 Cayman was my first Porsche and my favorite to daily drive. Beautiful car, exciting to drive, smile on my face no matter where I’m going. Plenty of power and grip, but you can still get it to go sideways.
I have a 987.2 Cayman S, and I love it. Upgrading is not in the cards, but if it were, it would pretty much come down to this or the Evora. I'm old enough that the super hard edge of the GT4s is something I know will get old in a way a slightly more comfortable car won't. And I like to keep my cars for years and years, not swap every few months.
They didn’t kill this vehicle, the platform lives on in EV form with a recent announcement that they’d continue creating vehicles with gas powered engines. You’ll see another Cayman/Box with a 6 in the coming years.
Well I was thinking of selling my GT4, but now I am keeping it and enjoying it, sell it down the road for a huge profit because everyone will want it instead of the terrible EV replacement.
If you think the Cayman is fun.... wait til you try a Boxster. Top down motoring in good weather really is special, and delivers a totally different sense of speed.
I needed this review - thank you. I’ve been torn between a G87 M2 and this, I’ve driven both and think the M2 is incredible, but there’s something about the 718 GTS 4.0. Not sure they can still be built, but I’ll be getting this next year and, if not new, as a CPO.
It’s the GT4 and spyder motor just detuned slightly. So essentially I didn’t want a GT4 because that level of sound deadening etc isn’t what I’m after.
Porsche as a brand if they don't stand up to Germany and the ridiculous EV mandates will be just another car maker!!! Dropping all the popular gas models for EV's is a recipe for disaster !!!
Def not the first time Porsche admitted they were wrong. The 991.1 GT3 did not have a manual option. The 991.2 did because Porsche admitted not everyone wanted a PDK. The issue with the 718 GTS 4.0 is the long gearing.
As a 718 GT4 owner my concerns dont lie with the latest touch screen or amenities, it's the cars driving dynamics and engine performance. I think Porsche may end up rethinking the all EV lineup for the Boxster as the flat 6 is synonymous with Porsche and that platform. 50% or more its owners buy theses cars for that very reasons.
Some misinformation in this video. You equate strut suspension to a Chevy equinox. The 992 Carrera has strut suspension in front. The internet wildly overstates the advantages of double wishbone. Lots of cars out there with double wishbone (eg emira) do not handle as well as the 718 on road or track. Also, this engine has appeared in other cars. Not exclusive to the 718 GTS. It is mechanically identical to the engine in the 718 GT4 and Spyder, with a slightly different software tune that closes the throttle body slightly above 7k RPMs to limit peak HP. The engine is also very similar to the turbo 3.0 in the 992. It just lacks turbos, has more displacement, and certain upgraded components to handle the higher revs (eg wider bearings).
The moaning about long gears is getting so old. If you think it's that big of an issue, spend the couple grand on Deman, Sharkwerks, etc gears and STILL be 50k cheaper than the equivalent 911... And almost as fast on the street.
@@Yakman18 Exactly how I am. Intake filter, headers and tune make the power band a lot smoother. I find myself shifting around 6000rpm, or so, and have an absolute blast on the street.
Agree. Didn't really understand what he was complaining about. If you want to drive, drive. If you want to surf the internet, do it at home with your iPad.
Great! My 991.1 will keep going up in value. Never cared for the boxer styling of the 718's anyway. I've seen donkey's with better looking rear ends than the Cayman. 911's RULE and always will.
Porsche will be forced to abandon the EV Caymen....i believe that because just look at the poor sales of the Tycan EV....and besides that....the consumer wants to hear that flat 6 motor....you cant replicate that***
A Cayman with one or two lightweight a/c motors providing instant torque, a smaller lighter battery at the very bottom of the floor, 50/50 balance..., could make an electric cayman the king of autocross.
Any Cayman is a great way to get many smiles per the gallon of Dino fluid burned. If you want a really analog experience go for a 987 and use the money you save to make it exactly what you want. No EPS will give you the "feel" of the old hydraulic rack and pinion.
Oh another thing, Porsche has backpedaled big time with crashing EV sales, and announced it will continue ice engines in its cars slated for EV only next year, so GOOD news for those of you who buy new and break the car in, for poors like me 😀
78mph redline at 2nd gear? no thanks. I’d just be stuck on 2nd gear 90% of the time in the canyons or freeways! What’s the point of a manual at that point? The sweet spot is 2nd gear redline around 60-65mph… thus why the GT3 is the more enjoyable manual road car than the cayman 4.0.
EVs are a trash heap waiting to happen, look at whats sitting around at Tesla car lots - think Hertz and look at depreciation of panamera and taycan. I’d begrudgingly accept hybrid but never full EV
I am 1 year out from my next car...was hoping it would be this, oh well. Hoping what is to come isn't a pure EV, maybe a hybrid. Wishful thinking, I'm sure.
Government EV mandates would be the short answer I guess. They killed it brought it back and more or less doubled the price in the process. At least they finally put the big/good/top NA engines (don't forget the RS) in before they pulled the plug...kudos to Porsche for that.
Believe it or not Porsche is one of the biggest pushers of electric cars. They just came out a couple weeks ago saying how all electric cars UNFORTUNATELY want happen until 2035 instead of 2030. I live the cars but wish these jerks go bankrupt
2L turbo lag from hell. Good riddance. It is a great loss that the last internal combustion Cayman ever produced is an entire generation lost to us enthusiasts. We will not desire it like 987.2 is coveted and desired. They should've given it a less laggy engine, it truly deserved it.
If you think it’s sound is not as rowdy that’s on Porsche and it’s bending the knee to EU story telling and emission standards. EVs are less environmentally friendly for the life of the vehicle including the toxic battery
Porsche management hates cayman exactly because it’s too good. Cayman is what the 911 used to be. But Porsche is no longer what it used to be. I’m hoping Lotus steps up with its new acquisition money to become Posche true spiritual successor. What I loved about Porsche is dead… it’s no longer about sporting.
I'm with you 100% however what if I can't justify the cost?! What should I go for a 718 Cayman 2.0T PDK or GR86 Premium manual? I currently have an S2000 AP-1
I chose a 2017 718 Cayman S a couple of months ago. Very happy. With an ECU tune, it makes the same HP and +100 lb-ft of torque over the GTS 4.0. The tq band is way wider as well. Find them in the $50-60 range.
I’m a huge Porsche fan but I’ll tell you right now, if Porsche doesn’t change their ways, GM and Ford are going to eat their lunch with the ZR1 and Mustang GTD. Porsche is going all-in on hybrid/electrifications while GM is letting it rip with massive displacement ICE engines. Huge props to GM and Ford.

12k
I like the gear ratios just fine. Though I don’t feel the need to hit redline in every gear all the time.
@@Yakman18 Exactly how I am. Intake filter, headers and tune make the power band a lot smoother. I find myself shifting around 6000rpm, or so, and have an absolute blast on the street.
@@Viporghini I found deleting the particulate filters with some over axle pipes definitely increases low end torque.
14:09 - I think that it might be too late to configure for any tangible result! 😞
All allocation gone before May 2024. You can only get used for the gas 4.0 now😢
please dont complain about the interior. interiors arent getting better.
I have one and think the interior is perfect. Not too much tech and real gauges and controls.
This car has one of the best interiors. Interiors are rapidly getting worse.
True Anso I like it any way
Agree. Didn't really understand what he was complaining about. If you want to drive, drive. If you want to surf the internet, do it at home with your iPad.
Absolutely perfect interior.
I am craving for a 718 Spyder,,,,, one of the best looking and sounding sports car around a hundred K
My boat was/is 2009 997.2 911C4S manual x97 shifter with high spec interior.
Smaller, lightweight battery pack? Dream on. EVs are weight pigs.
@ They don’t have to be, it’s a design choice. A 200mi range cayman could have a smaller high discharge pack if they choose to go that way.
@@aussie2uGAA 200 mile range? Not acceptable. Adding hundreds of pounds of battery weight? Also not acceptable.
4:26 are you really reviewing the GTS 4.0 as they get dual exhausts but the video at times show it with a single one….
I wondered that, too.
Your GOOD!
agree with you 100%
Comparing Cayman suspension to the Chevy Equinox is moronic!
agreed
Any Cayman is a great way to get many smiles per the gallon of Dino fluid burned. If you want a really analog experience go for a 987 and use the money you save to make it exactly what you want. No EPS will give you the "feel" of the old hydraulic rack and pinion.
Absolute nonsense. I had a 997 911 and then a 991S with EPS. I cannot tell the difference and 99 percent of drivers won't either.
Oh another thing,
Porsche has backpedaled big time with crashing EV sales, and announced it will continue ice engines in its cars slated for EV only next year, so GOOD news for those of you who buy new and break the car in, for poors like me 😀
78mph redline at 2nd gear?
Wishful thinking, I'm sure.
yes, yes they have/did!
Government EV mandates would be the short answer I guess. They killed it brought it back and more or less doubled the price in the process. At least they finally put the big/good/top NA engines (don't forget the RS) in before they pulled the plug...kudos to Porsche for that.
Amen!
Those are super low profile tyres.
What year is this GTS? 😒 🤔
Believe it or not Porsche is one of the biggest pushers of electric cars. They just came out a couple weeks ago saying how all electric cars UNFORTUNATELY want happen until 2035 instead of 2030. I live the cars but wish these jerks go bankrupt
porsche's always sounded like a loud sewing machine to me.. It's all about the toyota v6 3.5L 2gr
Wheel looks cracked. Be careful.
Chevy equinox?? Common dude. If you are going to mention a GM vehicle, at least say Corvette, not equinox.
F... goodbye. Nothing wrong
Go for a 981!
The Cayman is so damn good
People just dont get how boring and souless ev cars are. Gas cars dont hurt the planet but they do save our souls.
Don't understand why hes so hung up on the screen. Its a Porsche, not an S Class. Rubbish review.
