I'm a 47 year old African living in the United States. When I waa growing up, Self defence was what you did to protect yourself when attacked. Generally it involved any measures you took to discourage an attack, to avoid getting hit when attacked, or to retaliate after being attacked.
It was very well understood in society. Hiting the other person first duting an altercation wasn't considered self defense, it was considered being the aggressor. An altercation could go on for as long as the altercators liked, and it could get as loud as they liked, and it was fine as long as neither one put his hands on the other. It was simply an arguement and it was tolerated in society. The moment one of them put his hands on the other, it became aggression with the one who put his hands on the other being the aggressor. Anything the other person did afterwards was consideref self defence and it was acceptable as long as he did it with his hands and not a weapon.
I come here to the US, and everything is upside down. A person can hit you first, and claim self defence.
In Africa where I come from, what this video shows is cowardice; period! For us, if you're going to attack someone be honourable enough to let them know you plan to attack them, so they can be prepared. To pretend to be speaking with someone and then attack them is dishonourable and frowned upon.

All warfare is based on deception. If there is high likelihood that the encounter could escalate to severe injury or bodily harm, you are within your rights to PREVENT that. If the bigger guy here decided to take the first strike, it could be devastating to the smaller guy here. Would you consider him immoral to try and prevent that threat?

@@AW-rs1hp my point stands. The moment you take the first swing, you become the aggressor regardless of the size of the other person. Its not only an African perspective, its the moral perspective. The big problem with Americans is thar you've prescribed for yourselves rules that sometimes run contrary to natural law/morals, and you've exalted them for so long, that you've now forgotten that they're artificial, and you've now substituted them in your minds for moral law.
Think about it, who judges ",likelihood of escalation"? Two people could be having nothing more than a heated argument, and one judges that it could potentially escalate and decides to strike first, while in the mind of the other guy, they were simply having an altercation.
This is why you have some situations in this country that almost arent seen anywhere else in the world. For example, the man who unloaded his AR15 into a car which was using his driveway to make a U-turn, killing the female driver and injuring the other female passengers, completely confident he was acting in "self defence".
Or, the youngman who took out his handgun and shot an unarmed youtube content creator for following him around with a camera, to his displeasure. Again in the name of "self defence"
Anywhere else in the world, not only would none of those cases qualify as self defence but the agressors in those cases would know without equivocation that they couldn't possibly claim self defence under those circumstances.

That same punch to the liver is even better. NO ONE has an Iron Liver, but you never know who has an Iron Jaw. Once they double over and the groaning starts you can do what you need to do. Flee, or get the ropes and duct tape.

When he pointed to direct the opponent's attention elsewhere, and then hit him (I'm assuming that he's demonstrating the person looking away), that is a sucker punch. A sucker punch is just when you hit someone while they are preoccupied elsewhere, you could also call it a cheap shot if that makes you feel better. Either way, he took it from an opportunity to walk away, into a fight.
The greatest skill a true martial artist learns is how to not fight.
