      I bought a manual Roush Edition Ecoboost Mustang after only watching several TH-cam videos on how to drive a manual. The dealership was over an hour away from my house. I went to the nearest quiet neighborhood, and practiced starting and stopping for about 90 minutes. I think that the point of that was to get to know where the pressure point is. You can start virtually any car rolling like that if you are very, very easy when engaging the clutch and letting it slip a bit. My '86 Escort GT could do it and that wasn't a big HP car.

    • @jrock9195

      @@johnandrus3901 yea I know that's what he was getting at but someone new to a manual might get on a hill by accident and stall out roll into someone just thought I'd give a little more into what he already said in his video and yes I agree the grab point of a clutch makes everything easier once u learn it

    • @johnandrus3901

      @@jrock9195 Very true about hills. It takes some practice not to roll back. The hill start assist seems to be a safety feature, but it can become a crutch. I can't see someone that is used to it trying to start on a hill in a car without it.

    I am self taught and want to buy a 20' civic sport hatchback 6 speed over the summer. Problem is I learned to "clutch out and give it gas" all at once, thinking I needed to match the engine speed to the road speed. Thanks to this I had a lot of very jerky 1st to 2nd to 3rd shifts. Downshifting on the other hand? No idea. Break assisting on the civic is nice because it will hold the car in place until you press the throttle. This video really helped me better understand what I was doing wrong during test drives

    I learned how to drive standard on my dad and stepmom's old Subaru Impreza. Loved driving that car once I knew how to drive it. They had that and a Subaru WRX which was fun to drive as well (that car was standard too). They sold both vehicles though and got automatics after that and I got my own car just a couple of months after the Impreza was sold which was an older Honda Civic. That car was automatic as well so I was stuck driving automatic for awhile. I made it my goal to get my own car that's a standard afterwards. I kept having dreams I was driving standard again. Lol. I truly missed driving one. I accomplished that goal last month and got myself a 2018 Honda Civic LX Coupe that's a 6 speed standard. I will never go back to driving an automatic if I can help it. I'm loving my new car and I'm loving driving standard again (and the dreams of me driving one are gone now, how ironic). I find it way more fun than driving an automatic. So happy I actually took the time to learn this and not give up on it. Gonna have my car for a long time.

    Very informative, although most 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder cars will require some throttle easing out the clutch from 1st gear as the engine is not so big. Also ideal shifting would be at 3000-3500 rpm. If the distance to stopping to a traffic light or stop sign is short , brakes no clutch then clutch in and neutral (optional) when you reach 1200-1500 rpm. If you have a long stopping distance and say your in 4th gear you can down shift to 3rd and optional to continue downshifting to 2nd (downshifting at 2000rpm) before waiting for 1200-1500rpm clutch in.

    • @C4TLEADER
      @C4TLEADER 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Qays Shashaa Even with a V8 it definitely makes getting going much more smooth with a little throttle. Takes too long without throttle as well in my opinion. Ideal shifting also depends on the car and how high the engine revs.

    Thank God they fixed it up in 2019. I was really worried that Standard had been broken.

    It also depends on the car. I used to have a late 80s Datsun 210 and whenever I placed the car into first and released my clutch if I didn’t give it a little gas at the same time it would stall. Not all cars will start moving smoothly without giving it gas.

    • @rjay1394

      Same with my 09 mustang gt. This dude would keep stalling my car if he drove it like that.

  • @johnandrus3901
    @johnandrus3901 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Once you are rolling along, there is no need to push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor. It is a bit of wasted motion. Actually, it is only necessary when you start the car. Also, leave your car in neutral when stopped and keep your foot off of the clutch pedal. Never ride the clutch once you are in the top gear for what you are doing. Some here are saying that you can't ease out on a clutch in a low hp car without giving it some gas, but you can. My old '86 Escort GT could start moving that way. It is the easiest way to learn the pressure point of the clutch and is a good way to begin learning how to drive a stick. I taught a young female friend how to drive a stick in my '03 Cobra. It is a pretty heavy clutch, but she got the hang of it fairly quickly. My '12 V6 has the MT82 and the clutch is very light. I'm not a fan of the transmission, but the action is light and easy. My comments here are are basically for clutch newbies. Nice video.

    • @hamsterama
      @hamsterama 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have the money, get a brand new Toyota Corolla. The clutch is super light and and is as easy to push as the gas pedal. About 15 years ago, when I was learning to drive, I gave up on learning to drive manuals because they required too much physical effort. New cars have come a long way. That's why, if you can swing the cost, I recommend buying a brand new car if you want to learn to drive stick (that's what I recently did). Don't buy an old beater, you'll get frustrated and give up.

We live in a very hilly area so to practice hills all I have to do is literally drive out of my driveway and I’m on a very steep hill and practice.

    It's very important to wiggle that shifter in neutral as much as you can while stopped, and as you do it, sing the "wiggle wiggle wiggle" song by Jason Derulo in your head. Sometimes it's critical to grab the shifter in an 'air bender' type way while shifting gears as if you are about to karate chop someone to feeeEEEeeel the shift as smoothly as possibru.
