    What are the differences between harai and suriague?

    Harai as you made the opening yourself bij slapping the shinai out of the centre. Suriage would be used to nulify the opponent's attack while making your own..

      Yep 👍🏽 can’t argue with that logic

  • @huihshen

    Not sure if I have this correct, but the way I had been doing both Harai and Suriage kote with the exact same movement. the difference depends on what the opponent is doing, if opponent is holding kamae and not moving, then it becomes harai kote, if the opponent is coming in to strike by lifting the shinai, then it becames suriage.

    Harai. It's been told to me that successful kendo strikes happen on the odd actions... So that being said - Harai would be on action 1. You harai and then strike. 1 action. Suriage is on action 3. 1. You seme in some way 2. Opponent reacts to that seme and attacks. 3. You suriage. If the opponent is not striking, I'd argue harai. If they are, suriage.

    I say Harai even though it looks like a suriage. Harai because it's more commonly used as a Shikake-waza. Suriage more often for Oji-waza.

      Soooo what is the difference? (For discussion purposes and for me to hear different wordings thank you )

      @@Kendotips Aite was just standing in kamai. You "parried" his shinai from the center and struck. That's harai. If the aite is already cutting, a harai motion is not going to be able to deflect his cut. You will need a bigger motion to do so. So suriage in this case.

      @@Kendotips Harai is an "aggressive" knock in whichever direction to get the Shinai out of the way as where Suriage is more of a flick, (usually upward in a small "J" shape) to also get the shinai out of the way. I hope this clarifies your question? :)

  • @perialis2970

    I think Harai is
    Opening the opponent's Chushin (i think the centre of the opponent's kesen) for an attack.
    Suri-Age is
    Simply, Pushing upwards, so it is used more as a counter. (can probably be in different directions just that Suri-Age's "Age" means up so i think it wont be called the same)
    So simply, suri age is pushing and harai is flicking
    More understandably, Suri age in boxing is like counter punch
    A harai is like slip punch or parry

    Definitely harai in this example, suriage being used in counterattacking. Suriage waza is letting your opponent(partner) shinai slide down on your own shinai ,in order to take the center.

    This is harai since you are deflecting the opponents shinai before they begin their attack. From my understanding of suriague you also shouldn’t be moving your shinai side to side, only keeping a strong center when you lift to knock the opponents shinai away.

    • @Kendotips
      @Kendotips  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Something to add here, Harai is shikake waza, so it initiates the attack rather than deflecting the attack like suriague. The motion depending on the case can be similar in both though.

      @@tankasty it is kinda hard to tell without seeing it. It sounds to me that maybe you are throwing your hands to reach and maybe not using your body, but I think there’s more than that. You'll not want to do that with a real sword. Just slapping it out of the opponent's center ain't enough.

    • @Kendotips
      @Kendotips  ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree it also doesn't work in kendo if you just slap the shinai. You need to have correct mechanics and take advantage of the weakness of your opponent's Kamae, If you can't get the sword out of the way most likely it was the wrong time to do it or your technique is weak.
