      Hi Yulia, just got back from Lisbon for tourism, loved it there but I’ve been considering studying in Canada for a while now and although people speak the same language as I do in Portugal and college is cheaper there, I don’t think I’ll let go of the opportunity to gain better salary and better universities in Canada
      Love your videos X

    I'm moving from Lisbon to Canada soon, so I cannot speak about Canada.
    But about Lisbon:
    - Housing
    Make sure you earn a decent wage here, otherwise it will be hard to enjoy what the city has to offer. Housing is very expensive for portuguese wages. Takes a VERY big chunck of your salary away. If you want to live alone, in a studio, just to give you some perspective, you pay more than a whole minimum wage. And too many people make minimum wage.
    - Culture
    You have a lot of options in Lisbon. It's not the center of Europe culture wise, but the vatiety of offer is outstanding to the size of the city. Well known artists always stop here, and you also have a lot of choice when it comes to more underground stuff (wether it's in small music venues, clubs or festivals). Interesting museums like Gulbenkian will have great programms throughout the year for art in general.
    - Food
    Well...I'm not sure what to add. Great restaurants, great food, beer is cheap (still 1 euro in some spots, but I can't tell you where ahah, otherwise it can change). Country also known for its wine, so have fun exploring that. Yes, vegetables and fruit are mostly seasonal in the supermarket but you can still find specific fruits if you go to the right places.
    Note: Enjoy the fish here! It's the right place.
    - Nature
    We're not really a mountains/lakes destination. But we do have the beach. A lot of it. You can find the beach just 20 minutes away from you. Paradise, 40 min by crossing the bridge. If you go before summer, better for you. Way less crowdy.
    The city doesn't have as many parks as other well known cities. I'd say this is a downside. We have a few nice ones, but they're not than many, so you might find yourself going to the same ones over and over. You can drink alcohol outside though. Parks included.
    - Sports
    Surfing is big in Portugal (and one of the best surf spots in Europe is just 30min away from the capital). But nothing beats football. If you're lucky (or unlucky) to be here during the uefa euro or the world cup, it's worth going for a stroll when the national team plays.
    - Size
    Lisbon can feel like a small town after a while. It's not a super small city, but it's small enough to feel like you know too many people and the same places here so you might eventually look for a change. If you like very big cities, maybe this is not for you. On the other side, it feels more familiar which can also be nice.
    - People
    Generally people are very welcoming of foreigners and they want you to feel welcome and to experience our culture. You'll maybe discover that the portuguese are more reserved and less expressive than the rest of the southern european countries.
    We're nice but also straightforward. We don't beat around the bush. Usually, when we ask someone to hang out it's because we mean it. So the "are we still on for today?" is not that common. Because people assume you are, if nothing came up. Instead, you'l probably receive a text saying they're late.
    You'll find the people to be more relaxed here than in many european countries. Lunchtime is to eat, sitting down. People will talk to the cashier, while there's a line. It is what it is.
    If people tell you to meet at 19:00, you can add 15 minutes to that. Maybe 30, maybe an hour. It depends on the person, but it's generally acceptable to be late here.
    - Services
    Bureaucracy can be hell here. Yikes, I can never get used to it. Living here really does test your patience, but you have to adapt otherwise "when you worry you make it double". This one is hard. Hopefully you won't have to deal with this part too much.
    I've personally had great experiences with healthcare here. But I use the private system.
    Public transport is not perfect, depends on the service you use. I used mostly the metro and train inside the city. Trains had too many problems. The metro was generally okay but it's super noisy. Actually the city is generally noisy, but there are quiet areas which are very central.
    Extras
    - Speak english if you don't know portuguese. You can forget about spanish. Unlike in Spain, people do know how to speak english here (hehe sorry nuestros hermanos).
    - Talking shit about the country with natives will not look good on you. Only we can talk shit about it, and we do lol. But seriously, people get easily offended (of course not everyone), so be sensible when it comes to pointing out what's wrong with this country.
    - I've talked about Lisbon with people who have lived here or visited, and eventually the "It is so special, the vibe, idk, there's something to it" talk always comes up. I do think there is a very special feeling in this city, I cannot explain it either. Maybe the beautiful light helps. Sometimes it's also how a place makes us feel, rather than all the infrastructure it offers.

    Canada is EXPENSIVE, we have some of the highest housing costs in the world, taxes are high and getting higher with Trudeau's "carbon tax". Our ability to live without constant surveillance is slowly being eroded. I grew up here and Canada is not the country it used to be...I actually clicked this link because I'm thinking about moving to Portugal.

    • @Carolinapetroska
      @Carolinapetroska 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      True Canada is one of the most expensive countries in the world especially now so you better have or make tons of money to be able to just survive and buy the daily basic products. Also make sure you can find a place to live as it's extremely difficult in big cities, unless you move to a small town in the northern part of the country. And the worst part of all is that the gov. taxes foreigners like hell with all kinds of discrimination taxes such as 20% more if you buy a house in Ontario or BC. Well, they have this kind of mentality that if you are a foreigner, you should have to pay much more and be taxed much more right off the bat !

    • @angopi98
      @angopi98 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm here for the same reason, but I'm from Portugal trying to learn about Canada 😅
      If you think taxes are high in Canada, go learn about portuguese IVA and IRS...
      This is the country that taxes your boss for giving you a job, and taxes you for working!
      A 900€ salary (average portuguese, btw) will cost your boss almost 1200€ and you will only receive 750€, now calculate what the government gets with this...
      Then, IRS, is like a Robin Hood tax. If you earn a lot and don't spend too much, you will pay to IRS. If you earn almost not enough for main spendings, you will receive from IRS. I advise you to study this hard and figure at which grade of the IRS scale you might fit, if you're still thinking about moving here, because it's really a pretty complex matter, even to portuguese born people.

    Nice video. I know Portugal well and Canada only from a shorter stay, but, I am considering taking a couple of years in Canada and happened upon this channel. I find the Portuguese and Canadians to be among the friendliest and kindest people I know by far, and that both embrace foreigners with open hearts (: Hope you are enjoying it there, and that you experience the same as I have throughout the years. Oh, and make sure to try francesinha if your haven't already (: (though they say it's better up in Porto!)

  • @KayaAbe
    @KayaAbe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I had some diferent perceptions in my inverted path from Porto to Calgary since 6 months ago, which might be related to these particular places opposed to Lisbon and Montreal.
    I felt safer in Porto than in Calgary, but probably because of the "bigger city" environment which makes you find more "weird people" in the streets than the majority of old people you see in Portugal. I also find fresh food a lot more expensive in Canada, especially meat in general. In Portugal I could live very well with less than 200€/month in groceries (and liquor from the grocery store) while in Canada I easily spend 500 CAD/month for similar eating/drinking standards. I don't see much variety of fruits and vegetables here, but I can't say it's because of the pandemic scenario or if it has always been like that. Living farther from the coast probably doesn't help either.
    I agree with the travelling opportunities, but Europe looks all the same to me. It's always church, castle, bridge, old town. One thing or another is different in each place from my perspective, so having more options of cheaper places to visit was not a very strong reason to keep me there. Also, if you're a worker and have limited vacation days or little mobility for remote work, very often people prefer travelling farther away for a longer period of time than short visits to nearby places. Or we just leave them to be visited later because it's "right there" and end up never actually going... 😆
    I'm glad you're liking the life in Lisbon so far and letting yourself getting used to the new environment. My perception of life in Canada is that it also looks promising but "we'll see how it goes". Too soon for a conclusion yet. And we may always change our minds after a variety of random reasons, right?

    The bad thing about stores being opened until midnight (and talking as someone who worked in a shopping store) is that the people that work there 1- do a loooooot of hours on their feet and get paid the minimum wage; 2- from 8/9pm on there is no one on the street so you're doing a lot of hours for nothing and even risk getting out of work in the middle of the night and get robbed, depending on where you are working

    A very important aspect for me is the proximity to the US high paying jobs in companies like Facebook, Google, Amazon, etc. Since Canada is closer, it gets more of these jobs than Europe. I feel like working in one of these companies, making 200k cad+ and living in Toronto is a better option that doing a SWE job in Portugal but getting paid considerably less. Other big hubs in Europe are London, Amsterdam, and Berlin. London is pretty similar to Toronto for best jobs, maybe even a bit better, but other cities and countries fare worse.

    • @ThisisYulia
      @ThisisYulia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree that 200k in Toronto sounds good but your expenses will be also high. many tech companies like Meta are hiring remotely in Europe, so you can get a decent European salary while saving money on living in smaller cities in Europe

    I would go by Europe, I don't know Portugal but I lived in Germany and I kinda relate to some facts you mentioned, specially on how easy is to travel there and the richness of cultures, I remember that even within Germany, for instance, you could drive 30km and ppl would speak slightly different.
    As for Canada, I have been in Montreal, Toronto and now I am living in Vancouver, great cities, each one has its beauty, (well probably Toronto doesn't have any haha) but the thing immediately can notice is that Canadian cities are extremely quiet and at some extent boring, except for Montreal, where in summer there are plenty of festivals; I remember this circus festival, the juste pour rire, francofolies and so on.
    However, nothing compared to Europe, even though festivals might not be as common, I remember there was always something going on, like socially, life is more active in Europe and the food and getting drunk "wie zehn Russen" is cheaper BTW ☝️

    • @MafaldaM17

      @@mesopotamialover905 nothing to do with our native personality. Teachers in Portugal have been struggling for years, they constantly face many challenges and the government doesn’t help them nor appreciate them. Plus the parents nowadays are very strange, many of them don’t actually give the proper education to their children and put that pressure on the already very tired and struggling teachers. It is a HUGE problem in Portugal.
      Plus, we really don’t like rude people. Portuguese like humble and respectful people who values them, and some people just don’t do it, and then you can expect some rudeness then…
      It’s a very tricky situation to move to Portugal nowadays…

    Let me clarify about universities in Canada/US as a Portuguese born but raised in the US I can tell you that in here you go to school/university to build a career, in Portugal you go to your second parents house, in Portugal you learn how to be ready for life and in America you might learn how to do an open heart surgery but can't change a light bulb. US schools are in the worst rates ever recorded which would direct translate to crimes and bad habits.
