      Kyle you guys missing the point. It’s not about tone, that older piano needs to be tuned. It sounds cool sure, tone wise. The pitch of the notes is off and dissonant. If you can notice it, it’s not pleasing. The tone of the piano maybe pleasing, but the dissonance from it being out of tune is not. Not easy to pick up small differences like that unless you have trained ears.

      The second piano is out of tune but is still tuned. It's common to tune old pianos slightly flat to reduce tension on string.
      Interesting note. The tuning of all pianos are offset because the frequencies between octaves don't double. If a piano was perfectly tuned the lowest A and highest A would sound out of tune

      Most people have relative pitch which is what you are referring to. Some people have perfect pitch and can recall the sound of a note or the "feeling" of a note from memory or are able to tell the exact letter pitch (c,d,b,g,f#, etc) of a note they just heard, even if it is in between letter pitches (between f# and G for example). The difference in the notes makes it sound fine, but you can IMMEDIATELY tell the its out of tune if someone has perfect pitch even if they havent heard the song before.

    • @Milen983

      Tree yes, very few have “absolute” musical ear, most, including me, have “relative” pitch appreciation. The untuned piano's notes will have a slight frequency offset which will produce the "phasing" effect commonly used in synthesizers. This is why it sounds different (and in some cases "better") than the tuned piano.

    • @deathsheir2035
      @deathsheir2035 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Being in tune, means all musical notes are at the correct intervals.
      A-440hz is the standard we use today.
      A-420hz was the standard at one point in musical history.
      A-432hz is just as acceptable.
      What matters, is that all the other notes are tuned to match the different frequencies. Which is where 12-tone equal temperament comes in. So long as 12-TET is used, the piano is, in tune, just tuned to a different frequency.
      Break the 12-TET, THEN we will have ourselves a piano that isn't tuned.

    • @waveplasma1369
      @waveplasma1369 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      @@deathsheir2035 The very obvious phasing effect, caused by interference between the wavelengths, means that the individual strings are not tuned to each other. (There are 2-3 strings per note in a piano). Although the piano itself is in tune enough for the notes to fit within the 12-TET standard, the individual note strings are not perfectly in tune with each other. This also means the whole "438HZ" thing doesn't really make a difference.

I think Hollywood has also used poorly tuned instruments in the horror genre. Because we are sensitized to these sounds, we may not consider them poor so much as different.

      Well done ! In facts, that's exactly what's appenning in an untuned piano : each note on the piano is composed of multiples strings, and with time each string change tune in a different manner. That's why there is a difference between a piano that is artificially out of tune, where the notes are off, but each string of a note has the same tune as the others, and an untuned piano in which individual strings are out of tune.

    Even the in-tune one sounds a little out of tune because it's tuning is well-tempered. You can hear this better in high-quality pianos that have crisper resonance chambers. Sometimes lower-quality pianos are harder to hear out of tune because their resonance is "fatter" and less-defined as far as pitch. That is to say that higher-quality pianos have better harmonic resonance where the well-tempered tuning is more evident. You don't hear the conflicts in the harmonics as well in a cheaper piano.

    • @soilmanted
      @soilmanted 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @Jim Pemberton. Huh? Pianos are usually tuned to 12-tone equal temperament these days. shakahara.com/pianopitch2.php/ Well temperament generally refers to one of several historically earlier systems of tuning that is intended to sound good in any key, but is not necessarily 12-tone equal temperment, which is more precise, and which sound the SAME (or theoretically the same) in every key, as well as "well" in every key. That is, they are the same percentage out of tune in one key as in any other key. I am not aware of any part of a piano that is called a "resonance chamber." Nor do I know what "fatter" resonance is. There is something called "definite pitch" but it refers to pitch and not resonance. A bigger, better piano has partials that are closer to precise harmonics.

      Yeah, I was surprised when the 2nd piano was obviously, massively out of tune. The first one also doesn’t sound right to me. I have only found one technician that can tune my Steinway A “properly” - I can tell as soon as I play and sustain an E major chord, the harmonics “dance” across the soundboard, after he gets finished with it. Other tuners can make it “correct”, but not as musical, just dull, like that first piano.
