  • Mer is an extraterrestrial world plagued by evil. The only thing that can stop the encroaching darkness and the ruthless pirate lord who seeks to control it is a motley crew of unlikely heroes - an orphan prince of a formerly powerful kingdom, the last of his line of ancestors; a seasoned pirate whose obsession with treasure hid a heart of gold; a mysterious eco-mancer with ties to a realm beyond mortal men's reach; and a strange creature called a monkey bird is. These were The Pirates of Dark Water, introduced by the famous cartoon company Hanna-Barbera and developed in 1991.

The Pirates of Dark Water was Hanna-Barbera's best work, and yet SOOOOOO underappreciated. i only wish the creator had finished the script so that it could've been made by fans today, like Dungeons and Dragons finale was.

This would make a great movie today...if it stayed true to the show

There was no broadcast finale episode of D&D only an audio broadcast with a simplified animated cartoon style from a unproduced script. After watching it on TH-cam, oh how growing up in the 80s I would've loved to seen it in the animation of its predecessor show episodes.

A true gem of the golden era of American animated television; along with “Exosquad” and “Gargoyles”, I consider these 3 shows to be THE hidden treasures of the 90’s. For some reason there was just a tremendous up swelling of talented writers and producers putting out original and creative content - and I cannot stress that enough! With people yearning for fresh and new stories instead of reboots and retreads, these shows came up with unique worlds and exciting new characters that paid tremendous respect to their audiences. These shows were supposedly written with kids in mind but the content is engrossing and salient to me as an adult.
“Peter Pan and the Pirates” is another excellent show that has been buried in time and by the studio.

I watched this as a little kid in the 90's and loved it. I viewed it again recently and was shocked at just how awesome it was even from an adult perspective. A pure adventure with interesting characters that doesn't pull any punches with the plotlines. Even the characters you'd expect to be one-note have depth; The antagonists are competent and a genuine threat to the heroes.

Was one of my favorite Saturday morning cartoons, before it just ended all of a sudden.

Easily one of my top favorite shows. Bought it and watch it with my kids. Run a DND Homebrewed game based on PODW. And yes I know there is a pirates of dark water table top game haha

This was one of my favorite cartoons of all time. It needs to be made into a movie

Great breakdown! Love the video! I to agree that this series was far a head of its time. I always hated how it just sort of ended. I remember watching it as a young teenager thinking how different it was than anything else that was on television and how much better it was. This went down as a show similar to EXO squad that I thought was really interesting and the characters face real consequences. In any event, most of the voice talent is still available they could totally do a reboot on Netflix or something with Kevin Smith maybe kind of like the he-man reboot… I would love to see a modern maybe not reboot but continuation of the story a conclusion if you will. One small correction The Voice town that you named is actually Frank Welker with a K. He is one of the voices of the 80s if you will. Everyone remembers and knows Peter Cullen because of Optimus prime but Frank Welker Spand show many shows and the voice of the dark helper or whatever his name was with a tentacle was actually another voice from transformers/G.I. Joe/everything else Hasbro made a show of! :-)

There was a character that said "I'm a pirate! Not a pilot!" and I still remember it.

When I was a kid, this series actually scared me. But looking back on it as an adult, it looks rather compelling. I have nothing but respect for creatives that actually build their own world. World building seems to be a lost art these days, as now they would rather use shows to spout their opinions on the real world than actually make something original.
