    that's actually the best part and the most fun when i build anything, after all the sweat, the noise and the dust, you get to sit here, play some relaxing music, and enjoy seeing the wood getting back to life.

    Good tip about raising the grain first. That's what went wrong with my first batch of stained picks. Next batch will have Christopher's method of bursting the edges.

    Really enjoyed that. Now what you could do is make a patchwork jigsaw top like the Ibanez RG2006-4.

    Your staid/dyes look amazing. I'm inspired from watching your blends and burst. I wouldn't be surprised if the next color combos to take off come from Crimson Guitars Stunning Stains.🎸🤘🏻

    it is interesting to watch christopher do the more traditional stain work, whereas ben does strange things. watching ben try strange stuff is thought provoking; i think i am going to use that straw technique on my next guitar to draw natural looking designs onto it.

    Nice little demo! I like the effects especially the "trippy" ones! Don't be a stain snob Ben,
    they're nice enough for rock! And of course don't do drugs, kids!

    Good info, Thanks! Any idea when you might get around to building a guitar with hand tools? I have a few more shop projects in the pipeline, then I have a lovely slab of walnut that I plan to turn into a guitar, something Les Paulish, and since I work with hand tools I'd love to see how you would approach it.

    This was great guys. I’m doing something similar to Christopher on the Cherry red/Pthalo burst. I’m going for a crimson/water base, lightly sand it back & then the Pthalo blue/alcohol on top. I’ll finish it with 4 coats of Crimson guitar finishing lacquer. Hopefully, I’ll get a lightblue top with some pink hints shimering through.
    It’ll be a tele thinline Baritone, with a vintage Jazzmaster neck pick up, vintage Alnico 5 bridge pickup & modern 6-saddle ash tray saddle, master tone, master volume, treeway switcht. I’m contemplating using a white pearloid thinline pickguard, Cabronita pickguard, or no pickguard, depending on how I like the finish.
    Question, my preordered guitar body has a white plastic binding. How would you ensure no stain will get to that binding?

  • @mandersen45
    @mandersen45 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    What's the best way to do a charcoal burst? Just start with thinned black and work it darker as you go out, or would you mix in a bit of blue to the first hit to neutralize the wood's natural yellow/brown tint? Planning on using a figured maple veneer of some sort.

    Great vid about stains ! I am addicted to your channel for a long time already now; I guess I saw all of them, especially the ones about the various builds. Unique craftmanship & approach ! I learned a lot already. But: I have a question about staining.
    I am planning to build a copy of the George Harrison Fender Rosewood Telecaster. I especially like the looks; I’m not going to copy all of it. For example, I really like the sound of Fender Custom Shop ‘51 Nocaster pickups, so I won’t try to find the original Abby Ybarra (700 dollar) pickups.
    As I found out, brazilian rosewood is on the CITES list, and therefore is very hard to find, and if, it’s extremely expensive. So I said farewell to that plans. That’s why I started looking for alternative ways to achieve what I want.
    I recently got some nice pieces of walnut wood. It doesn’t match the colour of real rosewood a big lot; it’s kinda dark and has a nice grain pattern in it though. I wonder if there’s stains (or oils, or other finishes) that will make the walnut colour like brazil rosewood. As you are real masters in using stains, I am hoping you can give some advice here.

    On the bit that you blew on, what colour did you use over the top? I’m thinking amber or brown? That’s almost exactly what I had in mind for my new bass kit.
    I already have the phthalo blue and black, and getting the purple and green.

    I have the stains and the shots, but am struggling to get an absolute black fading into a colour. It is a case of using the shot nearly neat, or using something like an India ink?

    I thinking of attempting a sort of FluoriteGlo (green and purple) finish on the guitar I'm building (The Chimpenbacker, a Chimp shaped guitar made from White Ash with Rickenbacker-esque pickups). I'm just wondering if these stains would do the job. It looks like they'd be perfect. Hopefully you ship to Australia (this is the reason why I'm using Rickenbacker-esque pickups and not the real thing as Rickenbacker don't ship outside the US and are very picky about where their authorized dealers can send stuff).

    • @theneonchimpchannel9095
      @theneonchimpchannel9095 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      After looking at all the different stains available, I ended up getting the purple and phthalo blue as that looks closer to the shades of green found in fluorite and based on what we see here seems to blend really well with the purple. Interestingly, when I clicked add to cart it sound each was 5.54 pounds but when it got to check out they went down to 4.54 pounds. Shipping to Australia was actually more expensive than the stains themselves lol, but I'm used to that. Looking forward to when they arrive. We're cutting out the wood this week.

    Ok newbie question. Would you spray lacquer over the top of stain to give it the shinny gloss finish?

  • @JeffGillis1
    @JeffGillis1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    So the next big question that I've not seen you guys address is -- you have your burst or fade completed -- what must be done to lock it in? If you were to let it dry and then rub in finishing oil it would likely further blend or blur the color fade -- which could be a real bummer? What do you guys recommend to go from stain, blend and/or burst to an oil hand rubbed finish over your stains?

  • @budandbean1

    Is Black the best dark stain to stain it and sand it back to get the grain to pop the best? ...or is something like a purple or red better?

    • @toblexson5020
      @toblexson5020 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have no experience with stains, but I have some art knowledge. Black can often muddy colours when used to darken/shade it. Browns work well generally I think, but some colours have better darkening shades. For red I believe blue/purple can work (I also have a book that says dark green works). I think blue can be shaded with darker blue, or purple/red (or green if you want that blue-green shade). Yellows are best shaded with browns/oranges/reds because black can make them olive (that is paint, not layering up stains though). Green can apparently be shaded with red.
      This is mixing paints though, not stains, so experimenting is probably the best bet. I just wanted to suggest that if stains mix similarly to paints, you can get good effects by using unexpected colours. (Black and white are harsh, so can have strong impacts on bright colours, not as much on an already dark/pastel colour.)

    Hi, quick question, please answer.......if I mask off a stripe and do one colour (blue) then cover that and do a stripe (red) will they bleed into each other being water based? Can I get a sharp distinct strip? ..........
    Cheers guys great vids, I’ve an order sitting in my basket awaiting a reply 🎸😉

    • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
      @CrimsonCustomGuitars  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Masking tape tends to actually wick the stain underneath and promote bleeding imo. You can get a sharp line but it takes practice. I would suggest doing one colour as water based and one as spirit based to reduce the risk of them mixing too.. B

    Any suggestions for dilution ratios for the shots?

    • @CrimsonCustomGuitars
      @CrimsonCustomGuitars  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1 or 2 to 18 gives a nice dilute colour and you can add more from there to gain intensity etc. B

    Ben should be banned from ever touching stains again. Keep it simple and a little goes a long way. If you just keep putting stains over the top of each other you just get a shitty looking mess.

      Grum Dev old comment BUT: look at his newest (steampunk) guitar build...
      I think he is really good with stains, in this vid here he just tries out a lot, while Christopher goes with more traditional colours. Quite a good combination.
