- Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

"The Goat who thought he was a Horse" needs to be a children's picture book
I have my ram lamb in with one of my horse at the moment. Penny and Frank are quite the pair.
Yes! This!!!
Agree!!
I am so glad you found the footage and thank you so much for sharing it with us. We don’t wanna miss out on these important moments of your Family’s life❣️🌻
700k subs this summer ☀️ let's go
Building community connections is priceless - love that you all are doing the farmer's market
You leave me speechless girl. Your warmth, honesty, openness is everything. You warm my heart and make me smile. I feel the love you radiate out. God bless you Jess🙏🏻♥️
Congratulations Jackson!!
Wit is hilarious 😂😂😂 but it's so cute.
You look so very happy.
Your family is just so amazing, all of them. Miah too, ha ha! Jackson reminds me in his mannerisms of Miah, even though I know he is not his biological son, he seems to have so much of his 'vibe', and dryness, so sweet. And I'm SO glad to see your Farmer's Market. The concept of it as not only a market but a social event is so true here in Montpelier, and the vibe of yours seems so similar, open and welcoming. So wonderful that you pushed for that to happen, I bet it will live on for decades. Both our Farmer's Market and the Food Co-op started in the 1970's, and are going very strong here over 50 years later in wee little old Montpelier, VT.
Jess, I hear on Gold Shaw Farm that you will be coming to VERMONT!!! So excited to hear that, it's soooo beautiful here right now! We will welcome you with open arms!❤💛💚💙💜💖
Glad to see your Mom. Wish we could go visit her garden. I'm sure it is as amazing as ever.
I so love seeing your horses. I got back into horseback riding lessons about a year ago thanks to you encouraging us to follow our dreams. Thank you ❤️
I loveeeee your mug!!!! And those elephant ears are amazing!!!
Congrats to Jackson🎉🎉🎉. Jess it was nice to see your Mum again. She is so nice. Hope to see her in the garden with you soon. It is Saturday morning here and I was planning to go to the vegie market but as you are not a night person (as I am🦉) I am not a morning person so I skipp it today but tomorrow definetely going to the monthly market where is vegies but has other things to see. Need some clove and cinnamon oil😊. Special 🫂 to your Mum and Jackson the rest if you just a normal🫂.❤
Jess great video once again but I have to comment on your hair- I love your hair like you have it in this video as it takes me back 10yrs ago with you & your curls. Love Denise- Australia
Yes, the scrunched curls are beautiful!
I never realized how much your boys look alike until Ezra was slouched in the chair with the cat behind him. If you hadn't been talking to him already, I could have sworn he was Ben!!
Your mom is literally the CUTEST thing!! 💚
Awe love it love the farmers market
Sweet Jess, Thank you for sharing this footage of the farmers market. Farmers markets are the cat's meow for me. All the home grown, and hand made items you you can't resist.
You are so lucky! Our farmers market has some produce and one homemade soap stall, but the rest is from companies and brands.
I am very excited to meet you in a few weeks!!!
Lovely video, but you must kill those horseflies on the poor horse who just ate a biscuit. Yay for your mom visiting and graduating time !
I managed a local farmers market for four years. I was the best job ever. Whenever I travel I love finding a farmers market and walking around and finding unique treasures! Thank you so much for sharing yours!
I do the same! Every time we go on vacation I search for a local farmers market to go to. I love it!
I’ve been so busy making videos and have gotten so behind on yours…I’m so glad this popped up in my YT feed this morning. Have missed it and didn’t realize it! ❤️🐐 I do evening milking out of necessity. As life changes, so the chores must shift with it.
great video love the milking and your helper
You should try making Halloumi cheese with the goats milk! A fairly easy cheese that doesnt require maturing. Its just a 2 hour process. I would love to teach you! I do workshops
Enjoyed the video 😊
Fun video!!
Roots and Refuge Farm, awesome video keep it up dude
Seeing this video pop up just gave me so much joy.
You really need to write a children’s book called “The Goat that thinks he’s a horse, and other long tails” 😂
I really miss ‘little Ben’ in the garden with you in a regular basis!
Loved seeing your farmer’s market. Such a great place to meet friends and make friends. Love you all and Happy Graduation to your son. Here’s to a better life in the future that he will be able to handle by himself. 👏🎉🥳❤️
Thanks for sharing 😊Congratulations on your son’s graduation and the farmers market!
Oh I wish I could go to your farmers market!!! 😭😭 so so happy for you guys ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I just saw Rick Bayless on TH-cam make cajeta de Leche with fresh goats’ milk. It is absolutely delicious❣️
Prayers for health and safety.🙏❤️🙏
So precious... thank you! Blessings on your family and your growing season Kiddo! 🌻🐛Carolyn in Ohio 🌿💚🙏💕
Always brightens my day to have a video from you!
Both, my rooster and your roosters were makin' so much squawk I had to turn up my volume just so I could only hear you and your rooster 🤣 lol
Your haircut is so cute!! Also, I’ve been craving a devotional with Jess!
Very good footage! Always scary to think recorded moments in time are lost. Glad it was found 🌸
I love everything about this video; but my favorite is the cat taking the chair and Ezra choosing not to move the cat but just claiming the part of the chair he could fit on! I do that all. the. time. It feels wrong to move a cat that seems so happy in "my" chair. 😁😁
There are bored small-town teens all over I found it interesting how joining the farmers market MADE something to do rather than looking for something to do. When looking for something one of many directions is to look for a market by what can I do that is ridiculously overpriced or unavailable.
I love your channel. Really, I love your family.
Is it possible to freeze dry milk? How would you use it?
You made my slow work so much better. I'm over here harvesting calendula petals for making homemade skin care enjoying that you take us with you.
Keep being that inspiration and light. We appreciate you.
Your momma is so pretty and sweet! It's nice to see her again. And the boys in the barn - just precious. Great video Jessica. It's nice that Jeremiah will be manning the booth while you're gone. I wish I was close to enough to come and visit the market, but Tucson is a long way from Batesburg! 😊
I would think take the extra goat milk and turn it into cheese to sell at the farmers market and cremer as n option at the coffe place. Ezra or one of the boys could do milking and get some profits as well
Dang. Jackson being all like a grown man! 😂🥹🙌🏽
You can separate your goat cream, and make Ice Cream from the goat milk. Congratulations Jackson. Jess this was a very nice video.
Is this your first child to graduate? Its so bittersweet.
Congratulations graduate 😊
I live in southern va. I appreciate what you guys do. I would love to have some animals, just don’t have the space. That being said, we have 3 dogs that are all rescue. They are great. Non aggressive and loving. Roxy, the oldest is… old. Lucy has a bum leg and a lump near her heart. Leo is a German Shepherd/Husky mix and wonderful. I’d like to raise some goats. We have enough room for those.
When I can get some time, I’d like to see your market. The people here don’t put their heart into it the way you do.
That is great that it is on Thursday evenings. I wish I could find an active farmer’s market here in WNW Arkansas that wasn’t on Saturdays. (If anyone knows of one, let me know!) it’s such a beautiful way to support growers and makers in your community.
💚 Beautiful life! Thanks for sharing.
Hello from North Florida! Another GREAT video! Quick question - what type of camera did you use to shoot this video? The pictures are so clear on it! Thanks in advance for the information & have a GREAT weekend! 😁
I would love coming to your farmers market! I'd like to be Samantha and wiggle my nose ( Bewitched). From Washington state to South Carolina. 😉 Thanks for sharing. 🐸💚😎
Love watching you grow your family & community, as well as your farm.
Glad to hear about your auditing. Such a good reminder.❤
Your mom is so cute. Thought your dad was planning on building a house on your property?
Congrats to Jackson! I'm so glad your dear mother could come for a visit, I'm sure you all had a good time of it.
Great vlog; thanks for sharing! Such a great family! Blessings to all 🤗🇨🇦
Hey Jess! ❤ when will you guys have your merch back in stock? The t shirts and hoodies specifically.
Jess this looks like it got so much bigger ! We are gonna have to make the trip again with lily and Micah
And looove the family atmosphere !
I’m so happy you decided to still share this 💙 I would love to be able to visit the market. tell Meliah she has great taste in music, I saw she saw Niall Horan in concert 😅
So wonderful to see you doing such a great thing for your community guys!! Well done xx
Thank you for sharing with us.
I think i've said this before, but some of those "elephant ears" are actually a type of taro, and therefore edible. You can tell by the wavy edge of the leaf and how the top indent doesn't go all the way to the center.
Well, i have been watching you all day and here you are again! Have a blessed weekend Jess.
Okay everything is wonderful as usual with your videos but I have to say I LOVE YOUR HAT!! Where did you get it? I need a link!!
OK when is the market? I'm sorry, I know you've already said when. I'm roughly an hour away and would love to come one evening!
I love your hair with the natural curl shining through ❤️
Hey mom 👋🏼
I feel better about how my son felt about graduation last year hearing yours talk about his. Idk I wish they thought it was a bigger deal.
For the child, it’s not that big of a deal honestly. I remember graduating high school. It’s whatever. It’s not like it used to be in the past where you were now an adult after graduating high school. There’s so much more to go through in modern life before you feel like an adult. We have extended adolescence past 18 years old.
I didn’t even really care about graduating college or getting my masters either. What mattered more to me was getting married and having my first child.
Your child isn’t going to have the same emotions you are about what’s happening. And that’s totally fine. They don’t have to. They don’t have to feel the same thing you do.
Thank you so much. Also your hair looks so great!
I am so glad to see the farmer's market and how it is doing. I had wondered.
That is so great, what fun to go to the market.
Wait, what did I miss? I knew there were a couple of horses but not more??
Watching in "missing the Homestead Festival solidarity"
I will miss you at the market in June!
We do once a day milking and it's a great way to still have the farm but have evenings free.
I’ve been really glad I made the switch. I still have more than enough milk and though I thought I’d miss those evening milking terribly, being in my bed at 8:30 has more than made up for it 😂
What a precious community you have there. God sent your family there for purpose. ❤
What a blessing 😊
Awesomeness! God Bless you too♥️
I so want to come shop at your market!
I had to laugh! Of course he will be playing through the summer! We are all blue with Lexington Longhorns! Love your goat horse by the way 😊
I was just doing my duties 😆
Goat yogurt is amazing!
Wish I lived Closer!
Could you sell your extra goats milk at the market!
OMG, YOUR HAIR!!! It should be illegal to wear it any other way than this beautiful curly hairstyle! It's your natural hair, right?! I just LOVE it!
❤❤❤
I buy fresh goat milk from a friend and she also makes feta, Jogurt, Caramel and chèvre out of it. Oh and she makes soap with it too. Would be something to sell at the market. 🤷♀️ It’s all so amazing! And I make mozzarella out of the left over milk… I know you have cow milk, too but just an idea for maybe selling some of the extra in a different way. 🙏❤️
Funny little goat/horse!! So sweet!! I have a cat that thinks he's a dog...comes when they're called, lays down with them, 'helps' me in the garden, by digging holes, stays when he's told, etc. Very special part of our farm menagerie! 🥰
❤❤❤ No more kids at home for summer here and everyone’s too busy to eat out of the garden. They prefer Mom picking, cleaning and bring harvests inside to eat. Smart auditing your routine! I do this regularly and people sometimes don’t understand why I change choices of ways to live thinking I’m super mom. I’m reality mom! 😂
"You're so weird, but I don't hate it." That's exactly what the nicest cats think of us. We're better off not knowing what the crabbier cats would say.
I am so glad you found this footage! We were at the farmers market that night and had the best time! Spent some lovely time with your beautiful mom, Daniel taught us about coffee and helped us pick out the perfect blend. And meeting you was such a blessing! The next day we spent in the stores downtown and had lunch at Groucho’s. We LOVED it! You can feel the energy that you are all creating. Thank you for welcoming us in!
I was traveling through that market day, it was an awesome market! I need to come back again with my girlfriend instead of my husband, lol!
Well, honestly, you were going to be making more cheese and you’re not. You have the Harvest Right Freezer drier do use it for the goat’s milk!
@11:10 That's goat 🐐 milk rich ✊🏾 I would love to be goat or cow milk rich!
I talked my husband into leaving for our trip a day early to be able to visit the market 6/13. I know this video is from last month but does that mean Jess won't be at the 6/13 market? 😢
Are you able to sell some goat milk at the Farmers Market?
